Giant Ugly
Floating Machines
Giant ugly floating
machines coming to
your shoreline? You can
intervene and stop this
environmental horror!
Please help us here
in Mendocino County! If
they can put monstrous
ugly wave generators
here, what’s to stop them
from ruining YOUR local
shoreline?
The coastline of
Mendocino county is
under threat. Green Wave,
a Southern California
development corporation
wants to put up to 100
Pelamis wave generators
with from 1/2 to 2-1/2
mile off the headlands
between Little River & Pt.
Cabrillo. Right along the
Gray Whale migration
path and some of our
most scenic coastline.
These generators are
gigantic: 450 feet long
& 15 feet tall, weighing
750 tons. They have to
be highly visible to avoid
collisions with boats so
they are painted bright
orange & are lighted
at night. Their moving
parts are very noisy.
445 Summit Rd. Watsonville CA, 95076
408-847-0406 www.mountmadonna.org
Their mooring systems
require huge concrete
installations on the ocean
floor & the mooring lines
can entangle whales.
A huge area of prime
fishing ground would be
off limits.
The California
Current upwells north
of Mendocino and Fort
Bragg, to its wide spread
of nutrients to the south.
It’s one of the five most
important upwelling
currents on the planet.
These recharge areas,
which comprise less than
2 percent of the surface
of the ocean, have
historically supplied half
of the world’s fish catch!
Electrician Richard
Marino expressed worries
that basic electrical issues
had not been discussed.
“All generators produce
heat,” Marino said. “What
is the impact of dumping
this many heaters into
the ocean? How are
the magnetic lines of
force coming out of the
generators and onto the
shore going to effect the
ocean?”

WAVE ENERGY OFF MENDOCINO
– HOW TO INTERVENE
Deadline Feb 6, 2009
An application for a wave energy project
in the ocean off Mendocino has been filed
by Green Wave Energy Solutions, LLC.
The developer wants to put 10 to 100
wave energy devices in 17 square miles of
ocean, between 0.5 and 2.6 miles offshore,
running roughly north and south between the
Navarro River and Point Cabrillo.
On December 9, 2008, the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
began the permit process for the project
by issuing a “Notice of Preliminary Permit
Applications Accepted for Filing and
Soliciting Comment, Motions to Intervene,
and Competing Applications.”
The law provides that interested
individuals and organizations may become
parties to the permit process. In order
to become a party, you and/or your
organization(s) must file a “Motion to
Intervene.” The deadline for intervening
in the Green Wave Project is February 6,
2009.
You may intervene no matter what your
current views are on the merits of wave
energy. Intervention gives you a place at
the table as a full party to the permit process.
It also enables you to appeal future FERC
rulings with respect to the permit.
Intervening is not difficult, and you do
not have to be a lawyer to do it. It is best to
do it on a computer, since FERC maintains
a Web site that allows you to file documents
electronically. Here’s how to do it.
How to Intervene
First, prepare a document on your
computer’s word processor (Microsoft Word
is the most common file format, and can
be directly uploaded to FERC’s Web site).
The file name that you give your document
must have less than 60 characters with no
spaces.
Title your document “Motion to Intervene
in FERC Docket No. P-13053, GreenWave
Mendocino Wave Park Project.” Under the
title, put the date, and the name, address,
telephone number, and e-mail of the
individual(s) and/ororganization(s) filing the
motion.
In the body of the document, you must
state two things:
1) your position(to the extent you know
it) on wave energy, and the basis for it;
and
2) your interest in wave energy, in
sufficient factual detail to demonstrate that
you have, or represent, an interest that
may be directly affected by the outcome of
the proceeding (including your interest as a
consumer, customer, competitor, or security
holder of a party), or that your participation
is in the public interest.
If you feel that you do not currently have
enough information to state your position on
wave energy, you may simply say so, and
say that you are awaiting development of
further information before formulating your
position. You will still need to state what your
interest is (see (2) above).
After completing your motion, go to
FERC’s Web site at www.ferc.gov Click
the “Documents & Filings” link, then click
“e-Registration.” Follow the instructions to
sign on as a new user.
When you have completed this process,
FERC will send you a “New User Validation
E-mail.”
Now you are ready to file your motion
to intervene. Again go to
w w w. f e r c . g o v a n d c l i c k o n t h e
“Documents & Filings” link. Then click on
“eFiling,” and follow the instructions on the
screen to file your motion to intervene.
For paper filing, send the original and
eight copies of your motion to Kimberly D.
Bose, Secretary, Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission, 888 First Street NE, Washington
D.C. 20426.

Fluoride Action
Editor’s Note:
I have put this current information about fluoride in our
‘Sustainable Business’ column for
two reasons: It is so, so important
that I want it to be the first article to
read in this month’s magazine. And,
because the people that keep urging
and trying to mandate fluoridation in
our drinking water are influenced by
enticements of promised monies for
the city or the state, they have not
done their due-diligence on fluoride
research and/or are totally ignorant.
These ‘fluoridistas’ want fluoride to
be a ubiquitous element/chemical in
our drinking waters; they want it to
be sustained and be there forever.
There are a number of possible reasons why. Beware that these folks
can be found in each city’s governments. You can do your research via
the websites cited below. Please do
it. Thank you!

Dear Signer of the Professionals’

The current number of signers

Fluoride’s effect on the brain
There have now been 23 published human studies reporting an association between exposure to high natural levels of fluoride and reduced IQ in
children. The fluoride levels in water
in these studies range from 0.88 - 9.4
ppm. See the studies at www.
fluoridealert.org/iq.studies.html
PRESIDENT
of
the
International Society of Doctors
for the Environment (ISDE), Dr.
Vyvyan Howard, gave a public presentation reviewing 18 of the fluorideIQ studies in Toronto last August.
This resulted in a swarm of media
interviews. In late July, FAN
released a 4 minute video interview
with Vyvyan, available on YouTube,
where he discusses his concern of
fluoride’s adverse effect on the brain.
MD’s Against Fluoridation
In September, the Canadian
Association of Physicians for the
Environment (CAPE) released a statement opposing fluoridation that concluded:
On the basis of this “weight of

The ShoulderForward Posture
by Sylvia Skefich, D.C.
o many people are aware of the constant
effort to “stand up straight,” and pull the
shoulders back. The thing is that as soon
as the conscious effort drifts away, so does the
good posture. There is another way. Through
strengthening certain muscle groups a person
can train the muscles to hold the bones in a better posture. Muscles are like braces are to teeth.
They will change the position of the bones over
time. Rebalancing the posture muscles takes a
small active daily investment of time in exercise,
but the effort pays off all day, every day.
There is a series of exercises for this purpose. Not each one need be done daily, however
the more often each one is done, the better the
results. It usually takes about two weeks of daily
exercise therapy to start showing noticeable
results in posture.
Today we will cover two of the simple-todescribe posture rebalancing exercises. The concept is to tone the muscles that pull the shoulder
blades down and back. Each impulse of these
muscles (the mid and low trapezius, latissimus,
and serratus anterior) gives a neurological signal
to relax the up-and-forward muscles (the upper
trap, levator scapula and pectoralis).
The first one is so simple, that you can do
it anywhere, anytime, in any position (stand-
S
Are the Foods
You’re Eating
Making You Sick?
by Dr. Tonya Fleck
o you suffer from asthma, allergies,
eczema, acne, fatigue, inability to lose
weight, constipation or loose stool, brain
fog, stiff or achy joints, migraines or a lowered
immune system? Does your child have chronic
ear infections, complain of headaches, is hyperactive or has ADD? If so, you or your child may be
suffering from Food Sensitivities, and all of these
symptoms are likely tied together.
We’ve all heard the saying, “You are what
you eat”. And living in Santa Cruz County, we
have lots of opportunities to eat healthy. However, did you know that you could possibly be
eating “good” foods that are causing inflammation in your GI tract and triggering immune
responses?
It’s first important to distinguish the difference between a food sensitivity and a food
allergy. A food allergy is an IgE mediated Type 1
immune response. These reactions usually occur
within a few hours of exposure to the offending
food. Food sensitivities cause a different immune
reaction. They cause an IgG mediated Type 2
immune response and these reactions can vary
from a few minutes to a few days. Many of my
patients tell me that their doctor “tested” them for
allergies but things they know that they react to
didn’t show up. This is because they were testing
for IgG antibodies, not IgEs.
Here’s what happens. When we consume a
food that our gastrointestinal (GI) tract is ‘sensitive’ to, the same thing happens that happens on
our skin when we rub up against something — the
cells become red and inflamed which causes
“leaky gut”. In a healthy gut, our cells (enterocytes) are tightly packed together to protect us
from invading toxins (this is also where about
75% of our immune system lives and also where

do is reverse-shrug. Imagine that
you are attempting to get your
elbows down closer to your feet.
You should feel a clenching in the
rear armpit region. Stay loose, not

clenched, in the neck as you do so.
Hold each pulse for 2 seconds. Do this as many
times per day as you can.
The second one should be done with your
back against a wall. Once you get the hang
of it, however, you can do it with no wall for
resistance... just by clenching the right muscles.
Stand close to the wall. Move both arms out about
a foot from your body. Your thumbs will point
forward, and the pinkie side of your hand will be
against the wall. Then, one at a time, press each
arm back into the wall for 3-4 seconds. Again,
you should feel the rear armpit clench simultaneously when doing it properly. Feel your elbows
reaching away from your body, stretching from
your body as you simultaneously press back into
the wall. There should be absolutely no raising of
the shoulder, or forward rocking of the shoulder
joint to do this exercise effectively.
Keep in mind that it was the up-and-forward
pulling muscle groups being overused in relation to the down-and-back muscle groups that
created the forward shoulders in the first place.
Retrain your muscles to be like good braces for
your shoulders.

those good probiotics call home).
So when the integrity of the lining
of our GI tract is compromised,
toxins and other particles begin
to “leak” into our bloodstream
where our immune system recognizes them as foreigners and develops antibodies.
These antibody levels will continue to increase
from repeated exposure. Most of this happens on
a daily basis and we don’t have any symptoms.
However, when our immune system is continually
compromised, over time we eventually become
sensitive to just about everything. Ever wonder
why you get seasonal allergies and your partner
doesn’t? This is often the reason.
So, how do I know if I have food sensitivities, and what can I do about it? Since antibiotics
attach themselves to red blood cells, a simple
blood test can determine your sensitivities. It is
important to work with a knowledgeable practitioner to be sure that the proper testing is being
done. Once your sensitivities are determined, it
is recommended that you remove those offending
foods from your diet for 3 months (remove the
obstacles to cure) and supplement with glutamine,
high quality probiotics and mucilaginous herbs to
heal the lining of the gut. After 3 months, your
symptoms will have cleared and you should be
able to re-introduce those foods that you were
sensitive to, a little at a time, and have no reaction. Bon appetite!

Ignorant Undisciplined Depressed Motor
Moron Contracts Caries & Periodontal Disease
by David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A.
think about teeth probably too
much. Why? I don’t know why….
yes… yes, I do…. I do know why.
It’s just my nature to think things
through, over and over again… compulsively. Again, and again. Teeth.
Smiles. TMJ. Mercury. Fluoride.
Metals. Composite. Root Canals.
Galvanism. Systemic Dental Effects.
Dental education and politics. ADA.
CDA. Manufacturers, Big Pharma,
and marketing in dentistry. How boring!!! And not.
The dental profession has provided me with the most unbelievable
array of information accessible only to
the discerning eye of men and women
trained and licensed to practice the art
and science of dentistry, a very limited
number of humans. And… I am one
of them, lucky me. Plus, I am grateful
for the training and lifetime exposure
to medicine, research, teaching, and
hospitals I had prior to becoming
a dentist. It has been invaluable in
sorting out what I encounter and have
encountered in this profession.
Oh well, there could be worse
things to think about, but here in my
creative opportunity, I can articulate
to you, the reader, in multiple writing styles, the gems and epiphanies
that those pondering moments have
birthed. So, in no particular order, but
ultimately germane to the title….
I
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
~World Health Organization, 1948
Ignorant undisciplined depressed
motor moron contracts Caries and
Periodontal Disease. What is that
all about? What? What? What? The
Connection… like this magazine.
The Connection. It’s all connected.
Caries…. is dental decay, rotting
teeth. Periodontal disease is just a
logical extension into the bone through
related factors, but ultimately, on a
gross anatomical level, the supporting
bone rots away. Caries is a disease we
contract initially from our mothers in
the transfer of a bacteria known as
streptococcus mutans. Periodontal
disease is more complicated, but it is
also contagious and is passed between
partners. Thus… contracts.
Ignorant? Why? Why do teeth
and bone rot? Very simple: Through
ignorance, depression, lack of discipline, and/or poor motor skills. All
connected. All related. Mind/body.
Body/mind. All related. All connected.
Why care about teeth anyway?
No big deal, right? Wrong, absolutely
wrong. Teeth play a vital role in your
health that has either been overlooked,
unknown, or under-reported and down
played. So, why do teeth matter?
Besides being responsible for breaking down large food particles into the
smallest physical unit possible so more
surface area per unit volume of food
matter can be exposed to the digestive
enzymes the body provides (which
maximizes efficiency), tooth position
and posture determine the position
and posture of the tongue. Position
and posture of the tongue determines
overall body oxygenation, and hence,
function and health.
A high performance automobile
does not function as well when the air
intake is limited. What were 4 barrel
Holley carburetors about, anyway?
Does anyone really think it is any
different for us humans? Ever notice
how many of the great singers have
very broad dental arches that allow
them to expose many teeth? Is there a
Page 6 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.theConnect.com ▲ Jan. 15 — Feb. 4, 2009
connection? Think of Nat King Cole,
Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, Whitney Houston, Harry Belafonte, Dean
Martin, Joni Mitchell, and on and on.
Teeth must be, indeed, very important,
and not just for attracting attention.
Teeth must also play a crucial
role in providing neural input to the
brain, input that has yet to be fully understood. Research shows anatomical
and neurophysiological connections
between the brain and dental nervous
tissue, indicating some level of communication and likely, function. In
addition, the distribution of mechanical sensors is unequal throughout the
mouth with a greater density occurring
at the anterior regions of the mouth.
This is where proprioceptive teeth
guide safe closure of the most anatomically superior and only dual motion
double joint that must ultimately close
on the uneven surfaces of as many as
32 hard surfaced units, we have collectively labeled as teeth.
Repairing or removing teeth then,
has tremendous impact on the body,
which we have discussed in previous
columns. So, when one can value
teeth and maintain them properly by
overcoming ignorance, depression,
laziness, and poor oral hygiene skills,
then one is on a pathway of becoming healthier. Healthy teeth, healthy
mouth, healthy mouth, healthy body,
healthy body, healthy mind, healthy
mind, healthy human, healthy human,
healthy society. It’s all connected.

ur daughter, Sophie, and her
Auntie Shauna were enjoying
a long overdue visit. Shauna,
an anthropologist working with a
pastoral tribe in Ethiopia, was back
in Canada for a visit, sharing with
Sophie pictures and stories of how the
children there sometimes use garbage
from dumps to create toys.
Sophie (four years old at the
time) left the room and quickly returned with a bag full of her teddy
bears, dolls and puzzles. She asked her
aunt to take them back to Ethiopia so
the children could have ‘real’ toys,
Witnessing this was a touching
reminder of how kids intuitively ‘get
it’. Because of their innate compassion, grace, and human respect, giving
is something kids eagerly do when
provided the opportunity. And a
child’s idea of generosity isn’t a once
a year thing either. It’s a natural state
— that is, until they are socialized to
view it like much of society does; as
an annual event.
So as parents, if we’re looking
for new ways to approach the Christmas season, we’re fortunate to have
wonderful little ‘Conscience Coaches’
living right in our homes. Why not
follow their lead? Introduce them to
some new ideas and work together as
a family to decide how to spend some
holiday money, and discover as a family what the season is truly about. What
it should be about.
Just as those pictures and stories
moved Sophie to an act of spontaneous
selflessness, there is a new organization that understands the power of
gratitude, heartfelt word and image.
ChristmasFuture is an organization that helps families align with the
United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals of eliminating extreme

card system, which helps people refocus a portion of their holiday spending
towards ending poverty.
This online tool empowers you,
me and anyone with a credit card to
contribute to help end the needless
suffering of those in the developing
world. With ChristmasFuture, we get
to choose from a list of projects we
want our funds to go to. All projects
are helping communities climb out of
poverty in a lasting and sustainable
way. We can even send a gift to a
friend, so they can direct the funds! In
return, not only do we get a tax receipt,
but we also get proof of impact. The
organization provides its donors with
web video, blog and/or email updates
on exactly how a specific donation
helped to change the world.
North Americans spend over
$500 billion dollars on retail each
year at Christmas and doing the math,
ChristmasFuture realized that if they
help people refocus even one percent
of that sum, then the organization
would have a massive, long-term effect on ending poverty. One percent in
ChristmasFuture terms means every
household in Canada and the United
States forgoes one gift of 25 dollars
and directs it to where it’s really
needed. This also means we can still
have a traditional Christmas, it’s just
no longer entirely about us.
Introducing ChristmasFuture to our children is not only a
phenomenal opportunity to engage
our children in something that truly
matters, it’s an opportunity to create
a new family tradition. Imagine you
and your children choosing to forego
a latte here, or a movie rental there, so
you could stash away that money towards a ChristmasFuture donation at
the end of each year. Sophie and I are
aiming to surpass our donation every
single year until ChristmasFuture’s
goal is reached.
As much as it sounds like reinventing Christmas, it’s not. This is
about allowing our children to guide
us back to our natural, un-conditioned
state of generosity and discovering
how that might help us view Christmas anew. ChristmasFuture is about
taking the societal concept of what
Christmas currently represents (our
invention of it) and uninventing
it. Doing so, we can strip it of its
commercialism and allow our own
humanity in on the holiday. What a
concept!
After all, didn’t Christmas begin with the promise ‘a little child shall
lead them”?
Let’s allow our
own kids to
help fulfill that
promise. Let’s
start uninventing Christmas.

sat seeking other-worldly experiences
for several hours to no avail. I did
become more peaceful, something
today I would consider a huge success.
I finally gave in to fatigue and took a
nap in the warm sunshine.
By late afternoon it was time
to leave my ledge. I sadly considered
my time on the mountain a failure. I
picked my way down the steep slope
to Panther Meadow, with its little
stream gurgling down the center. As
I descended along the trail, I noticed
a man lying on the grass close to the
stream. I was passing him perhaps
thirty feet to the side, and had a peculiar feeling something was wrong.
I paused for a moment to make sure
he was breathing, which he was, then
continued walking but was stopped
again by a strange impulse to go over
to him. Immediately my mind judged
this as foolish. The man was probably
taking a nap, probably seeking solitude, maybe even on the mountain for
the same reason I was there, seeking
spiritual growth.
I started to pass him when again
I felt stopped by a stronger prompting to
sit next to him. Again my mind kicked
in with all the reasons I shouldn’t do
From New Year’s
Resolutions to Results
by Karin Leonard
id you make New Year’s
resolutions for 2009? If you
didn’t, it is not too late – at
least if you do want some real goals.
Resolutions have a bad reputation:
we tend to make them every year, yet
hardly anyone keeps them. There is
no question that clear goals and intentions put you in the “driver’s seat”
of your life. What will it take to turn
“resolutions” into tangible results?
A little scheming up front can go a
long way.
Making Resolutions Work
If you did set new resolutions,
how are you doing with your intentions for the New Year? Knowing
what you want is a good start. Yet,
often, when good intentions meet the
pressures of everyday reality – and
the well-oiled machinery of familiar
habits – it takes more than just hoping
to change. Knowing how to motivate
yourself, and setting up effective
support structures for maintaining
life-balance, will keep you on the road
to success.
Magic of Motivation
Motivation is the why of goals.
It is the fuel that actually gets you
to your destination. Let’s say you
decided 2009 is the year when you
will really exercise, and continue to
do so. What would make you want to
leave your safe cozy cave on a rainy
evening? When it would be so nice
to just stay home and read, or watch
D
TV…. To overcome inertia, you need
positive momentum. Why should it
matter to exercise? Would you venture
out because doing so would increase
health and energy, or might prepare
you for an upcoming athletic event?
The more powerful your reason, the
greater the magic possible.
Make Change Work
Making resolutions – and keeping them – often involves some form
of change. And change happens on
several levels: through shifting your 1.
Environment, 2. Behavior, 3. Beliefs,
and maybe even 4. Identity.
1. You can increase the chance of
success for your resolutions by altering your surroundings. If you want
to lose weight, for example, eliminate
tempting foods from your house. Or,
don’t go to places that may induce
old behaviors. And if you want to
increase exercise, don’t retreat to
your cave after work, but head right
for the spa.
2. Changing your behavior is the
most direct approach to create results.
When wanting to quit, for example,
it doesn’t matter whether you think
about smoking, or dream of chocolate
chip cookies when on a diet. What
counts in terms of your results, is what
you do. Following through with a different choice often enough eventually
forms a new habit. By then, the new
behavior has become so ingrained, it
will seem automatic.
3. Self-expectation predicts your

hite Eagle urges us to
always be prepared in our
hearts for the call to service, for we never know when we will
be needed to help another. Currently, it
is one of my most important prayers to
ask that I be used to help others. But it
wasn’t always my prayer.
In 1977, Joyce and I spent the
summer close to Mt. Shasta with oneyear-old daughter Rami. At the time,
we were enamored with mystical
teachings and paranormal phenomena.
Our plan was to take turns each day,
one of us seeking enlightenment on the
slopes of the fabled mountain, while
the other took on the “worldly, nonspiritual task” of caring for our toddler.
Of course now we realize our folly,
and relish any opportunity to spend
time with a baby or child as one of the
highest paths to the divine.
It was my turn this particular
day to go forth seeking enlightenment
upon the sacred mountain. Kissing
my family goodbye, I ventured high
up the alpine terrain and finally found
my “power spot” on a ledge with a
magnificent view of the mountains on
the western side of the valley. There I
this. He’ll probably think you’re some
weirdo, and ask you to leave him
alone. I wouldn’t blame him. If I was
meditating or relaxing beside a stream
in the wilderness and someone sat down
right next to me, I probably would be
upset too.
The sensible thing to do was
to leave him alone, but I just couldn’t
ignore the urge I was feeling. Perhaps it
was all the meditation on the mountain
that enhanced my sensitivity to this
seemingly inappropriate prompting, but
I hesitated no longer. I turned, walked
up to this man, and sat one foot away
from his head. I felt like a complete
idiot.
The man opened his eyes and
looked at me with an expression that
registered no surprise whatsoever. I had
the eerie sensation that he seemed to be
expecting me. He sat up and, without
small talk or any form of greeting,
proceeded to tell me he was lying there
planning his suicide, but prayed one last
time in desperation: “If there is a God,
please send someone to help me.” A few
minutes later I sat down beside him.
I spent perhaps thirty minutes
speaking with this man. In that time it
became crystal clear to both of us that
there indeed was a higher power in the
universe, and this power sent me to him
in his time of deepest need. He looked
directly into my eyes and proclaimed,
“Now I don’t need to kill myself. I have
proof of God’s existence. How can I
ever thank you?”
Page 9
outcome. If you are convinced that
change is hard, it probably will be.
What would you need to believe in
order to succeed?
4. Change at the identity level
tends to be the longest lasting. When
an old habit no longer fits your selfimage, you outgrow it more quickly.
Calling yourself a “non-smoker”, or
an ex-anything, still defines you in
terms of the behavior you are trying to
avoid. To make change stick, choose
a new identity: one that spells out
what you want – like being a “healthy
person.”
Healthy Harmony
Last but not least, how do your
resolutions fit in with the rest of your
life, and the people you share it with?
Is what you are intending in conflict
with other aspects of your life? Your
life has a delicate ecology of interdependence. When you change any
part of the whole picture, everything
else gets impacted – for better or for
worse. It is wise to spend a moment
reflecting on the intricate web of connections in your life: you with you,

he sales counter was obscure
gray in color. There were no
wares hanging from the walls
around it, as in a typical store. No
last minute check-out items displayed
on top of the counter vying for my
attention. All was basically blank
except for the counter itself. Big,
loving hands then spread open as
the words clearly spoke “May I help
you?” Then the hands gently gestured
towards a pad and pencil on the table,
suitable for my placing an order. As
I came fully awake, the vision slowly
dissipated, however the meaning was
crystal clear.
In It’s infinite love for us, Source
Energy was describing how the basic Law of Attraction works. Each
thought, every vibration, each opportunity for focus which we emanate
is in fact our “order” to universal
Source saying, this is what I desire
to experience more of. We can focus
our energy, into placing our “order”
in a much more clear and powerful
manner as well. This is the essence
of my teachings.
As I have said before, your mind
is an extremely powerful tool. Coupled with emotion, thought becomes
a vibratory emanation so strong that
it is literally measurable in physical
terms. You are known by your vibration. It enters the room before you do
and remains long after you have gone.
T
When people think of you, the thing
that identifies you is your vibration.
And, your vibration changes according to your thoughts, which echo your
beliefs.
Your mood is an indicator of your
alignment with the truth of your being.
When your thoughts and beliefs are
out of alignment with the truth of who
you really are, your mood becomes a
strong indicator of that disconnection.
You know it, and so does everyone
around you. In those moments, you
seem to be “off center.”
Indeed, it is like an airplane going from point a to point b, which is
actually off course more than on. The
pilot’s job is to make sure constant
correction occurs keeping the “plane
on course.” So too, our job is in keeping our thoughts focused in service of
our desires for our life’s experience,
rather than on that which we fear,
detest, are annoyed by, frustrated with
or angry at.
As Julia Roberts said in Pretty
Woman, “Ever notice how the bad
stuff’s easier to believe?” That is simply because we are first and foremost
spiritual beings. The incidents of our
physical experience which are out of
alignment with what we know to be
our capability and core truth grab our
attention simply because they are so
foreign to what we know. The truth
(which we retained much of as we
came forth initially) was and remains

thanked me. I needed the same divine
proof you did. You’ve probably helped
me just as much as I’ve helped you.”
We stood up together and
hugged, then he gave his farewell and
started walking down the path. He
stopped after about fifty feet, turned
and waved, and I saw a radiant smile
light up his face. Then he turned away
and was gone.
I continued to sit in that holy
spot, mesmerized by what had just
happened. I didn’t even know his name,
but I did know that I was used as an
instrument of love. I also knew without
a doubt that this fellow would never kill
himself. And it wasn’t my psychiatric
training and experience that convinced
me of this. It was a deeper knowing that
comes from true spiritual realization.
That afternoon on Mt. Shasta
changed the course of my spiritual
quest. Previously, spirituality was
something to acquire, something just
for me. Now spirituality was becoming
more than just for me. I realized that the
highest mystical experience was the joy
and fulfillment of truly helping another.
I realized that immature spirituality
is selfish. It’s about acquiring more
power or fame. Mature spirituality is not
selfish. It’s about helping and sharing,
creating a larger good than self.
Since that day on the mountain, I
try to listen more carefully to that sometimes irrational intuition. I really want to
be of service here on earth, and I can’t
do the highest job by just listening to
my mind. I need to listen to that deeper
prompting, the voice of my heart, and
then I know I am really helping.
So, yes, do all you can to help
others. But, above all else, listen to
those often subtle promptings to do
something you wouldn’t ordinarily do.
Your mind may rebel, like mine did on
the mountain, but your heart and soul
will guide you best. You may make
mistakes, thinking you are following
intuition. I have made many. But this is
how we all learn. Sometimes you just
have to take the risk. Learn the joy of
divine service.

is that we are whole, complete, free,
powerful, capable, love and loving,

connected to the Source Energy which
creates worlds.
I have my clients go through a
process of identifying the few incidents or situations which occurred
early on in their life’s experience
(some in utero) which began changing their beliefs of who they were and
what they were capable of achieving.
It’s surprising how only a few situations, spoken words, thoughtless or
misplaced behaviors delivered to a
child can form their beliefs about
themselves, their worth, what they
can expect to experience in life and
certain types of relationships from that
moment forward.
Such as the potter who made
beautiful vases, only to break them and
reconstruct them with gold filament,
ultimately creating incredibly beautiful and powerful works of art— So
too, is our work in creating a new self
concept born of a strong adult understanding of the truth of who we are as
spiritual beings with all the power and
privileges of such, rather than from a
childhood perspective of those who
had power over our experience.
Since this input could also have
been positive, we would do well to
only incorporate those incidents, however the part of our brain responsible
for our human survival constantly
records, especially in the case of
extreme emotion. The good news is
we can put that to work for us, as we

The Spray for the Light Brown Apple Moth
Isn’t it over? The Answer is: “ Not by a long shot…”
by Sylvia Skefich
P
LANES FLEW OVER the
populated regions of Monterey
and Santa Cruz in late 2007
releasing a chemical spray of 17%
synthetic moth pheromone plus 83%
“inert” ingredients with known toxicities, (including carcinogens and
endocrine disruptors) in an
attempt to eradicate the Light
Brown Apple Moth.
Grass roots mobilization
quickly led to the formation of
organizations
including
Californians Alliance to Stop
the Spray (CASS), and the Stop
the Spray groups of SF, Marin,
East Bay and others. Hundreds of concerned citizens and professionals
joined with these groups contributing
to an ongoing outcry. Among the concerns include the human “right to safety.” (Over 650 people lodged health
complaints that they believed were
spray-caused). Other concerns revolve
around the issue of “fraud” by the State
of California; Funds earmarked for
Homeland Security for “states of emer-
gency” were and are being used to
usher in huge amounts of money
toward the agro-chemical industry. The
necessity of eradicating the moth however, has been under question, as is the
moth’s classification as a Class A pest.
A wealthy California produce
grower named Stewart Resnick has
democrat, donated $144,600 to
Governor Schwartzenegger’s 2006
reelection campaign. The Light Brown
Apple Moth was also discovered in the
bay area in 2006. In 2007 Sutera was
assigned the contract to supply the state
with “Check Mate” for the LBAM
eradication program. Resnick benefits
doubly from the sale to the state,
because his
company
profits from
the sale, and
he protects
his vast central valley
almond
orchards
from potential embargo by other countries.
The superior courts of both
Monterey and Santa Cruz deemed
that the spray program was premature and illegal. Santa Cruz superior
court Judge Paul Burdick stated that
the potential of monetary loss from
agricultural embargo does not constitute a “state of emergency.” Proof of
crop damage was required and not
presented.
Since that time, the treatment zone
for the LBAM eradication program has
been expanded to include almost all of
California (excepting the great deserts).
The aerial spray, although no longer to
be applied over densely populated areas,
is proposed in “rural” areas—a term that
is not defined. The range of potential
treatments include rural aerial spray,
spray by trucks along neighborhood
streets, splat treatment of pheromone
concoction to telephone poles, twist tie
pheromone bags, release of sterile
wasps, and manual spray on private
property for up to ten years continuously.

of being.

A wave of unfathomable light is
upon us, and the darkness that we have
buried is coming to consciousness to
be embraced and released forever. The
new paradigm of humanity is unlike
anything in recorded history. There are
no maps or guidelines, and the potential for fear and confusion is unprecedented. Our only reference is this pres-
ent moment where we find peace, clarity, and the teacher within.
The speed and intensity of this
occurrence is beyond the capacity of
mind. There is nowhere to run and
nothing to fight. The war outside is a
remnant of the darkness deeply buried
within and hidden from our own
awareness. The only escape is surrendering to the now where we are gently
and joyously carried, through mind
and time, into the
light of our own
perfection.

ease of management of the pest in
other countries), greatly minimizing
competitive citrus imports quarantined
from New Zealand and Australia. In
2003 Resnick purchased Sutera, maker
of the synthetic moth pheromone pesticide, “Check Mate.” Then, Resnick, a

Help Food Democracy Now!
I
N JUST THREE weeks, more
than 60,000 Americans have
joined Michael Pollan, Wendell
Berry, Wes Jackson, Alice Waters,
Marion Nestle, Frances Moore
Lappé, and Eric Schlosser calling
for a sustainable USDA. Now, that
the Secretary of Agriculture has
been selected, it’s more important
than ever that we send our message
to Washington. Today’s farmers
need a serious voice for sustainable
change at the USDA. Therefore,
Food Democracy Now! has created
a list of 12 candidates for the crucial
Under Secretary positions that will
stand up for family farms, safe
food, clear air and water, animal
welfare and soil preservation.
We need your help to continue
to spread the word to your friends
and colleagues to reach our goal of
100,000 signatures in the next few
days before the Inauguration! These
12 candidates have spent their lives
fighting for family farmers and
we’re calling them the Sustainable

OW MANY DAYS are
there until January 20th?
That is a predominant
question/statement that we are
hearing these days. Hallelujah! It
is almost here! Our Theme for
January, over these past 16 years,
has been ‘A New You in the New
Year’. We are following that
Theme with a bit of a change: ‘A
New Us, A New Country, A New
World in This New Year’. Get the
jest of it? I am sure you do. We
are officially calling this Theme:
CHANGE!!
We are thrilled to present
some information regarding
Barack Obama, our new and real
President; our elected President
(not a pResident Select).
At the end of this Theme,
you’ll find the Chaldean
Numerological Blueprint (done by
renowned Numerologist Joanne
Justis) of the new Secretary of
State, Hillary Clinton. Each month
we will present Numerological
Blueprints for the rest of President
Obama’s Cabinet Members until
we have featured each of them.
January 20, 2009 will be a
most auspicious, historical time.
Let us enjoy it, feel it and be so
empowered that we each and all
commit to being ‘ever-present’,
focused and ‘up’ with what is happening in our country and the
world. It is time for all ‘good people to come to the aid of their
country’ by being committed to
action, participation, justice, freedom and true democracy for all—
we must pay attention to all that is
happening in the local, state &
federal governments! Yes?! Let us
all take back truth and integrity.
Now is the time . . . !
For Change . . . with peace
and love,
Pattie & Thom
P.S. Go to: www.change.gov
to the website of President Obama
which asks us to each participate
and tell Barack and his team what
we want, think, desire, question,
etc., etc. Please participate!
Remember, January 19th is
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!
Thanks to MLK, we are in this new
paradigm time with Barack Obama
as our President. Join a celebration of MLK at the Vets Hall on
Jan. 19th @1pm. See Billboard Ad
on page 2 for details.
O
N JANUARY 20TH,
our journey to bring
change will officially
begin.
We’re organizing the most
open and accessible inauguration
in our nation’s history. And
we’re doing it without contributions from Washington lobbyists
or big corporations.
Just like we did on the campaign, we’re relying entirely on
supporters like you—ordinary
people giving whatever they can
afford to make this an event for
all Americans.
I know we’ve asked a lot of
you. But, changing the way business is done in Washington will
take a commitment from all of
us. Right now, you can help give
this administration a strong start.
Make a donation of $5 or
more and be part of the historic
moment you made possible.
We have a long road ahead
of us, and we’re going to face
some major challenges as soon
as we start. But, I know I can
count on you every step of the
way.
Thank you for everything
you’ve done and Happy New
Year,
Barack

The Barack Obama Presidency
by Sue Heinz
H
OW WILL THE Obama
presidency unfold?
Astrologers know that the
universe channels itself through
individuals. By looking at their birth
charts and the chart of present time,
we can see that certain individuals
resonate with the planetary patterns
of the time. As the great astrologer,
Dane Rudhyar said, “We are born in
answer to the needs of the universe”. Certain individuals more
fully embody the needs of the time.
Barck Obama is one of them.
Those needs, right now, are a
strong emphasis on the earth element (in this case Virgo and
Capricorn), and the energy of
Aquarius, with emphasis on the
planet of Aquarius, Uranus. Barack
Obama has Mars in Virgo, Saturn in
Capricorn, Aquarius rising sign and
the planet Uranus next to his Sun in
Leo. He is a practical visionary who
embodies a symbology to take us
into the new paradigm, beyond
polarization, into oneness and unity.
Time magazine heralds Obama as
the person of the year, and sums up
what the universe is calling for. “His
genome is global, his mind is innovative, his world is networked and
his spirit is democratic.”
The inauguration chart of 2009
has a large gathering of planets in
Aquarius, the sign of creative innovation, group participation, equality
and the power of the people. These
planets sit at the top of the chart
making them very strong forces for
the 4-year term. This chart, because
of Jupiter, shows help and good fortune to the executive coming into
power on that day. This supports
growth of creative and futurist
ideas. The chart
shows an overwhelming determination to work
in service for
healing, to bring
forth greater
meaning for
humanity, and
transparent interaction. With
Mars in
Capricorn there
is tremendous,
disciplined energy present in this administration to
persevere toward goals. The chart
shows that relationships are exciting
and stimulating; yet also challenged.
Perhaps this illustrates that Barack is
working with both conservatives and
liberals to initiate change. The chart
also shows a very grounded and
practical approach to life.
The inauguration chart maps
out the challenge of this time. Pluto
has just moved into Capricorn,
doing its work of destroying, transforming, rebirthing governing systems and structures. Last time Pluto
was in Capricorn was that very significant time for our country, 17621778. Uranus opposes the planet
Saturn since 2008, and through
2010. The last time we had this line
up was 1965-1967. Uranus breaks
up the forms that Saturn has built up
over time allowing radical change.
Uranus is crisis, awakening us from
apathy, denial and what has grown
extreme.
Amazingly, these Aquarian
planets sit right on Obama’s Jupiter
in Aquarius. We experience his
Jupiter, when we hear him speak in
inspirational terms. This aspect of his
character will be strengthened during
these 4 years and he will continue to
inspire the world and us. The inauguration chart also highlights Barack’s
Saturn in Capricorn. With Jupiter in
Aquarius and Saturn in Capricorn,
Obama’s chart shows him as a
charismatic visionary and a persevering pragmatist, someone who takes
responsibility for getting things done.
This Jupiter transit indicates a perfect
time for decisiveness, and judgments
that are practical and appropriate.
Foreign diplomacy goes well.
Barack’s most positive features are
highlighted during his presidency.
He will be helped most of 2009
with Jupiter crossing his Ascendant,
bringing beneficent energy to him
and yet he will also have to be very
patient with Saturn sitting on his
Mars, making progress slow and
blocked at times. It calls for incredible discipline, which he has, and
being very deliberate to work with
the energy of this time. With his
Mars alignment to Saturn in Virgo,
there is a drive to deal with society’s
problems by
reintroducing
standards of
quality and
purity into the
culture. He
will work hard
to improve
conditions,
bringing attention to details.
As Uranus
now opposes
his Mars he
will weave the
innovative and
new with the
more pragmatic approach.
Barack’s Venus in Cancer is
now opposite Pluto in Capricorn. His
relationships will go through many
changes. It shows that he is keenly
tuned into the great transformative
needs of the time. Indicative of this
is his grandmother’s death right
before he won the election. This
primed him on a deep and personal
level to feel sacrifice and the overwhelming power of love and connection between people and events.
There are two other indicators
of incredibly unique and synchronistic timing with Barack’s presidency.
We are entering the year 2009 which
in numerology is an “11” year.
Eleven is known as a master number.
Master numbers give you the opportunity to achieve something more
unique, more intense, and on a higher level of consciousness.
Interestingly, Barack is also an “11”,
totally resonating with the energy
and need of the times. He is a 29/11,
just like this year. People with this
number bring together creative energy with higher principles and integri-
ty, applying creativity in service to
others and to higher wisdom. As
Time magazine observed Barack, “
He possesses a rare ability to read
the imperatives and possibilities of
each new moment and organize himself and others to anticipate change
and translate it into opportunity.”
29/11 people bring in balance
and love. They are mentally, rather
than emotionally, creative, having a
large and powerful energy field,
possessing extraordinary potential to
support humanity. They face issues
with awareness and commitment,
uplifting, and inspiring, to support
and heal.
In Chinese astrology, 2009 is
the year of the Ox. Barack Obama
was born in the year of the Ox. In
times of turmoil, those born under
the Ox have presence of mind, and
innate self-confidence to restore
order. One can rely on his promises.
He is a natural leader and disciplinarian with an excellent character of
high morals and ethics.
The heavenly body known as
Chiron, the wounded healer, aligns
with Barack’s Aquarius Ascendant,
making the wounded healer a primary theme over the next the four
years. How fitting that our first
black president brings in the energy
of the wounded healer. This attunement to the collective wound and
the power to heal us where we are
split is so desperately needed in our
leadership today. Barack is a man of
the people, an Aquarius man for the
Aquarian Age, inviting us all to continue to participate in the making of
this new vision.

Nine Steps to Peace for Obama in the New Year
How the Incoming President Build a Peace-Based Economy
by Deepak Chopra
The following is a memo to
Barack Obama from Deepak
Chopra.
Y
OU HAVE BEEN elected
by the first anti-war constituency since 1952, when
Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected
after promising to end the Korean
War. But ending a war isn’t the same
as bringing peace. America has been
on a war footing since the day after
Pearl Harbor, 67 years ago. We
spend more on our military than the
next 16 countries combined. If you
have a vision of change that goes to
the heart of this country’s deep problems, ending our dependence on war
is far more important than ending
our dependency on foreign oil.
The most immediate changes
are economic. Unless it can make as
much money as war, peace doesn’t
stand a chance. Since aerospace and
military technologies remain the
United States’ most destructive
export, fostering wars around the
world, what steps can we take to
reverse that trend and build a peacebased economy?
1. Scale out arms dealing and
make it illegal by the year 2020.
2.
Write into every defense contract a requirement for a peacetime
project.
3. Subsidize conversion of mili-
tary companies to peaceful uses with
tax incentives and direct funding.
4. Convert military bases to housing for the poor.
5. Phase out all foreign military
bases.
6. Require military personnel to
devote part of their time to rebuilding infrastructure.
7. Call a moratorium on future
weapons technologies.
8. Reduce armaments like destroyers and submarines that have no use
against terrorism and were intended
to defend against a superpower
enemy that no longer exists.
9. Fully fund social services and
take the balance out of the defense
and homeland security budgets.
These are just the beginning.
We don’t lack creativity in coping
with change. Without a conversion
of our present war economy to a
peace economy, the high profits of
the military-industrial complex
ensures that it will never end.
Do these nine steps seem unrealistic or fanciful? In various ways,
other countries have adopted similar
measures. The former Soviet army is
occupied with farming and other
peaceful work, for example. But
comparisons are rather pointless,
since only the United States is burdened with such a massive reliance
on defense spending. Ultimately,
empire follows the dollar. As a society, we want peace, and we want to
be seen as a nation that promotes
peace. For either ideal to come true,
you as president must back up your
vision of change with economic
reality. So far, that hasn’t happened
under any of your predecessors. All
hopes are pinned on you.

Obama: Urgent Action Needed for Economic Recovery
Remarks of President-Elect Barack
Obama
T
DC. For years, too many Wall Street
executives made imprudent and dangerous decisions, seeking profits with
too little regard for risk, too little regulatory scrutiny, and too little
accountability. Banks made loans
without concern for whether borrowers could repay them, and some borrowers took advantage of cheap credit
to take on debt they couldn’t afford.
Politicians spent taxpayer money
without wisdom or discipline, and too
often focused on scoring political
neurs, and the most advanced technology and innovation that history
has ever known. And we are still the
nation that has overcome great fears
and improbable odds. If we act with
the urgency and seriousness that this
moment requires, I know that we can
do it again.
That is why I have moved
quickly to work with my economic
team and leaders of both parties on
an American Recovery and
Reinvestment Plan that will immedi-
and confidence in our economy. It is
true that we cannot depend on government alone to create jobs or longterm growth, but at this particular
moment, only government can provide the short-term boost necessary to
lift us from a recession this deep and
severe. Only government can break
the vicious cycles that are crippling
our economy - where a lack of spending leads to lost jobs which leads to
even less spending; where an inability
to lend and borrow stops growth and
leads to even less credit.
That is why we need to
act boldly and act now to
reverse these cycles. That’s
why we need to put money in
the pockets of the American
people, create new jobs, and
invest in our future. That’s why
we need to re-start the flow of
credit and restore the rules of the road
that will ensure a crisis like this never
happens again.
That work begins with this plan
- a plan I am confident will save or
create at least three million jobs over
the next few years. It is not just
another public works program. It’s a
plan that recognizes both the paradox and the promise of this moment
- the fact that there are millions of
Americans trying to find work, even
as, all around the country, there is so
much work to be done. That’s why
we’ll invest in priorities like energy
and education; health care and a new
infrastructure that are necessary to
keep us strong and competitive in
the 21st century. That’s why the
overwhelming majority of the jobs
We arrived at this point due to an era of
profound irresponsibility that stretched from corporate
boardrooms to the halls of power in Washington, DC.
points instead of the problems they
were sent here to solve. The result has
been a devastating loss of trust and
confidence in our economy, our
financial markets, and our government.
Now, the very fact that this crisis is largely of our own making
means that it is not beyond our ability to solve. Our problems are rooted
in past mistakes, not our capacity for
future greatness. It will take time,
perhaps many years, but we can
rebuild that lost trust and confidence.
We can restore opportunity and prosperity. We should never forget that
our workers are still more productive
than any on Earth. Our universities
are still the envy of the world. We
are still home to the most brilliant
minds, the most creative entrepre-
ately jumpstart job creation and
long-term growth.
It’s a plan that represents not just
new policy, but a whole new approach
to meeting our most urgent challenges.
For if we hope to end this crisis, we
must end the culture of anything goes
that helped create it - and this change
must begin in Washington. It is time to
trade old habits for a new spirit of
responsibility. It is time to finally
change the ways of Washington so that
we can set a new and better course for
America.
There is no doubt that the cost of
this plan will be considerable. It will
certainly add to the budget deficit in
the short-term. But equally certain are
the consequences of doing too little or
nothing at all, for that will lead to an
even greater deficit of jobs, incomes,

HROUGHOUT
AMERICA’S HISTORY,
there have been some years
that simply rolled into the next without much notice or fanfare. Then
there are the years that come along
once in a generation - the kind that
mark a clean break from a troubled
past, and set a new course for our
nation.
This is one of those years.
We start 2009 in the midst of a
crisis unlike any we have seen in our
lifetime - a crisis that has only deepened over the last few weeks. Nearly
two million jobs have now been lost,
and on Friday we are likely to learn
that we lost more jobs last year than
at any time since World War II. Just
in the past year, another 2.8 million
Americans who want and need fulltime work have had to settle for part-
time jobs. Manufacturing has hit a
twenty-eight year low. Many businesses cannot borrow or make payroll. Many families cannot pay their
bills or their mortgage. Many workers are watching their life savings
disappear. And many, many
Americans are both anxious and
uncertain of what the future will
hold.
I don’t believe it’s too late to
change course, but it will be if we
don’t take dramatic action as soon as
possible. If nothing is done,
this recession could linger
for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits. Our economy
could fall $1 trillion short
of its full capacity, which
translates into more than
$12,000 in lost income for a
family of four. We could lose a generation of potential and promise, as
more young Americans are forced to
forgo dreams of college or the chance
to train for the jobs of the future. And
our nation could lose the competitive
edge that has served as a foundation
for our strength and standing in the
world.
In short, a bad situation could
become dramatically worse.
This crisis did not happen solely
by some accident of history or normal
turn of the business cycle, and we
won’t get out of it by simply waiting
for a better day to come, or relying on
the worn-out dogmas of the past. We
arrived at this point due to an era of
profound irresponsibility that
stretched from corporate boardrooms
to the halls of power in Washington,

created will be in the private sector, while our
plan will save the public sector jobs of teachers, cops, firefighters and others who provide
vital services.
To finally spark the creation of a clean
energy economy, we will double the production
of alternative energy in the next three years. We
will modernize more than 75% of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of two
million American homes, saving consumers and
taxpayers billions on our energy bills. In the
process, we will put Americans to work in new
jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced - jobs
building solar panels and wind turbines; constructing fuel-efficient cars and buildings; and
developing the new energy technologies that
will lead to even more jobs, more savings, and a
cleaner, safer planet in the bargain.
To improve the quality of our health care
while lowering its cost, we will make the
immediate investments necessary to ensure that
within five years, all of America’s medical
records are computerized. This will cut waste,
eliminate red tape, and reduce the need to
repeat expensive medical tests. But it just
won’t save billions of dollars and thousands of
jobs - it will save lives by reducing the deadly
but preventable medical errors that pervade our
health care system.
To give our children the chance to live out
their dreams in a world that’s never been more
competitive, we will equip tens of thousands of
schools, community colleges, and public universities with 21st century classrooms, labs,
and libraries. We’ll provide new computers,
new technology, and new training for teachers
so that students in Chicago and Boston can
compete with kids in Beijing for the high-tech,
high-wage jobs of the future.
To build an economy that can lead this
future, we will begin to rebuild America. Yes,
we’ll put people to work repairing crumbling
roads, bridges, and schools by eliminating the
backlog of well-planned,
worthy and needed infrastructure projects. But
we’ll also do more to
retrofit America for a
global economy. That
means updating the way
we get our electricity by
starting to build a new
smart grid that will save
us money, protect our
power sources from
blackout or attack, and
deliver clean, alternative
forms of energy to every
corner of our nation. It means expanding broadband lines across America, so that a small business in a rural town can connect and compete
with their counterparts anywhere in the world.
And it means investing in the science, research,
and technology that will lead to new medical
breakthroughs, new discoveries, and entire new
industries.
Finally, this recovery and reinvestment plan
will provide immediate relief to states, workers,
and families who are bearing the brunt of this
recession. To get people spending again, 95% of
working families will receive a $1,000 tax cut the first stage of a middle-class tax cut that I
promised during the campaign and will include
in our next budget. To help Americans who have
lost their jobs and can’t find new ones, we’ll
continue the bipartisan extensions of unemployment insurance and health care coverage to help
them through this crisis. Government at every
level will have to tighten its belt, but we’ll help
struggling states
avoid harmful
budget cuts, as
long as they
take responsibility and use the
money to maintain essential
services like
police, fire, education, and
health care.
I understand that some
might be skeptical of this plan. Our government has already
spent a good deal of money, but we haven’t yet
seen that translate into more jobs or higher
incomes or renewed confidence in our economy. That’s why the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Plan won’t just throw money at
our problems - we’ll invest in what works. The
true test of the policies we’ll pursue won’t be
whether they’re Democratic or Republican
ideas, but whether they create jobs, grow our
economy, and put the American Dream within
reach of the American people.
Instead of politicians doling out money
behind a veil of secrecy, decisions about where
we invest will be made transparently, and
informed by independent experts wherever
possible. Every American will be able to hold
Washington accountable for these decisions by
going online to see how and where their tax
dollars are being spent. And as I announced
yesterday, we will launch an unprecedented
effort to eliminate unwise and unnecessary
spending that has never been more unaffordable for our nation and our children’s future
than it is right now.
We have to make tough choices and smart
investments today so that as the economy
recovers, the deficit starts to come down. We
cannot have a solid recovery if our people and
our businesses don’t have confidence that
we’re getting our fiscal house in order. That’s
why our goal is not to create a slew of new
government programs, but a foundation for
long-term economic growth.
That also means an economic recovery
plan that is free from earmarks and pet projects. I understand that every member of
Congress has ideas on how to spend money.
Many of these projects are worthy, and benefit
local communities. But this emergency legislation must not be the vehicle for those aspirations. This must be a time when leaders in both
parties put the urgent needs of our nation
above our own narrow interests.
Now, this recovery plan alone will not
solve all the problems that led us into this crisis. We must also work with the same sense of
urgency to stabilize and repair the financial
system we all depend on. That means using our
full arsenal of tools to get credit flowing again
to families and business, while restoring confidence in our markets. It means launching a
sweeping effort to address the foreclosure cri-

of a clean energy economy,

sis so that we can keep responsible families in
their homes. It means preventing the catastrophic failure of financial institutions whose
collapse could endanger the entire economy,
but only with maximum protections for taxpayers and a clear understanding that government
support for any company is an extraordinary
action that must come with significant restrictions on the firms that receive support. And it
means reforming a weak and outdated regulatory system so that we can better withstand
financial shocks and better protect consumers,
investors, and businesses from the reckless
greed and risk-taking that must never endanger
our prosperity again.
No longer can we allow Wall Street
wrongdoers to slip through regulatory cracks.
No longer can we allow special interests to put
their thumbs on the economic scales. No
longer can we allow the unscrupulous lending
and borrowing that leads only to destructive
cycles of bubble and bust.
It is time to set a new course for this
economy, and that change must begin now. We
should have an open and honest discussion
about this recovery plan in the days ahead, but
I urge Congress to move as quickly as possible
on behalf of the American people. For every
day we wait or point fingers or drag our feet,
more Americans will lose their jobs. More
families will lose their savings. More dreams
will be deferred and denied. And our nation
will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some
point, we may not be able to reverse.
That is not the country I know, and it is
not a future I will accept as President of the
United States. A world that depends on the
strength of our economy is now watching and
waiting for America to lead once more. And
that is what we will do.
It will not come easy or happen overnight,
and it is altogether likely that things may get
worse before they get better. But that is all the
more reason for Congress to act without delay.
I know the scale of this plan is unprecedented,
but so is the severity of our situation. We have
already tried the wait-and-see approach to our
problems, and it is the same approach that
helped lead us to this day of reckoning.
That is why the time has come to build a
21st century economy in which hard work and
responsibility are once again rewarded. That’s
why I’m asking Congress to work with me and
my team day and night, on weekends if necessary, to get the plan passed in the next few
weeks. That’s why I’m calling on all
Americans - Democrats and Republicans - to
put good ideas ahead of the old ideological
battles; a sense of common purpose above the
same narrow partisanship; and insist that the
first question each of us asks isn’t “What’s
good for me?” but “What’s good for the country my children will inherit?”
More than any program or policy, it is this
spirit that will enable us to confront this challenge with the same spirit that has led previous
generations to face down war, depression, and
fear itself. And if we do - if we are able to summon that spirit again; if are able to look out for
one another, and listen to one another, and do
our part for our nation and for posterity, then I
have no doubt that years from now, we will
look back on 2009 as one of those years that
marked another new and hopeful beginning for
the United States of America. Thank you, God
Bless You, and may God Bless America.

Labor Leaders See Chance for Rebirth
the labor movement and who is best suited to
bring a fresh image to it.
Among their goals is to use the election to
reunite the AFL-CIO with a set of unions that
broke away from the federation after a dispute
with Sweeney’s team and created an organization called Change to Win.
Reconciliation would consolidate labor’s
resources and ensure that the movement
speaks with one voice during this critical period.
Recent interviews with
four labor leaders - Sweeney;
American Federation of State,
County and Municipal
Employees President Gerald
McIntee; Change to Win cofounder and Service Employees
International Union President
Andy Stern; and International
Association of Fire Fighters General President
Harold Schaitberger - show a movement eager
to secure a foothold in the wholesale economic changes that could come as Obama implements his aggressive recovery program.
“For American labor, 2009 will be a big
year,” McIntee said. “We have a new administration. We have governors all across the
country who are looking toward being able to
organize more workers in red states that have
become blue.”
A huge stimulus package rooted in massive spending on public infrastructure
improvements would create ripe opportunities
for union construction jobs, from laying
asphalt to painting new school buildings to
rebuilding firehouses.
Obama’s vision to stimulate a new green
jobs sector of the economy offers a chance to
attach labor-friendly strings to any grants or
research projects and a prospective place to
transfer the skills of imperiled, unionized
steelworkers and autoworkers.
But several labor leaders noted that passage of the legislation in the Senate remains an
uphill fight because Republicans have enough
votes to block it. As a consequence, labor leaders may win legislation that toughens scrutiny
of management but doesn’t guarantee the card
check program they have sought.
The way Sweeney, McIntee, Stern and
Schaitberger see it, the Democratic victories of
2008 are nothing less than a chance to usher in
a new age for the nation’s once-enviable middle
class - working-class families who could pay
for homes and college tuitions on one or two
household salaries, rather than being forced to
take on multiple jobs or debilitating debt.
“Give us a government that will be fair
and allow that middle class of America that
built this country to grab a little piece of the
dream again,” Schaitberger said.
Settled at the end of a conference table at
the AFL-CIO headquarters near the White
House the other day, Sweeney recalled a cold,
drizzly day in 1944 that reminds him of the
Barack Obama has the ability to turn this
country around,” Sweeney said. “We won’t be
shy about expressing ourselves and speaking
out, loud and clear, about our core positions.”
Renovation of the nation’s health care
system also could open up opportunities to
unionize new workers, make homes for old
ones and ease one of the biggest financial
burdens for union workers and all families.
“We can’t get our economy back on track
without changing how we do health care. Each
moment we wait, the worse
it gets,” Stern said.
“Solving America’s health
care crisis now will bring
down costs, help stimulate
the economy, create new
jobs and make businesses
more competitive.”
The new Congress provides other labor
opportunities as well. Priority -No. 1 is passage of labor’s long-sought ability to organize
more easily by collecting signatures on cards
rather than organizing an elaborate election,
which can be monitored and checked by management.
Reconciliation would consolidate labor’s
resources and ensure that the movement speaks
with one voice during this critical period.

C
OULD THE INAUGURATION of
Barack Obama launch a renewal of the
labor movement?
That’s the hope of labor leaders who have
been monitoring cabinet appointments and
delivering legislative and regulatory wish lists
to the Obama transition teams.
Beyond the new president and his vice
president, Joe Biden, they can count at least
three new Cabinet secretaries - Hillary
Rodham Clinton at State, Hilda L. Solis at
Labor and Tom Vilsack at Agriculture - as
longtime allies who have sought their support
in presidential, congressional and gubernatorial races.
The condensed summary of AFL-CIO
requests and recommendations fills nearly 16
full pages, including such targeted calls for
action as ending a policy that allows Mexican
trucks on U.S. highways and creating a friendlier National Labor Relations Board.
Labor’s ambitions, however, are much
bigger than those specific requests. And to
achieve them, it may need to put its own
house in order before it can exert maximum
influence on the new Democratic White
House.
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney’s term
expires this year and he’s not seeking reelection, clearing the way for new leadership of the
movement’s most recognizable brand name.
A dozen or so presidents of the federation’s biggest unions are scheduled to meet in
Washington this week - without the AFL-CIO
leadership - to deliberate on what new mission
and set of priorities should be established for
juncture that labor finds itself at today.
Sweeney was 10 years old, and President
Franklin D. Roosevelt was winding up his
reelection campaign with an October swing in
his Bronx, N.Y., neighborhood. The crowd
cheered wildly for the president who is largely
credited with using government’s deep pockets
and reach to push the nation toward economic
recovery.

3 Facts About Obama & Education
B
ARACK OBAMA WILL reform No
Child Left Behind: Obama and Biden
believe teachers should not be forced to
spend the academic year preparing students to
fill in bubbles on standardized tests and he will
improve the assessments used to track student
progress to measure readiness for college.
Invest in early childhood education:
The Obama-Biden comprehensive “Zero
to Five” plan will provide critical support to
young children and their parents. And, they
will help states move toward voluntary, universal pre-school.
Make college affordable to all Americans
Obama and Biden will create a new
American Opportunity Tax Credit worth
$4,000 in exchange for community service. It
will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the
average public college or university and make
community college tuition completely free for
most students.

Obama Will Face Bush Legacy on Environment

BUSH could be forcing
President-elect Barack Obama
to act almost immediately to curb
global warming, after years of the
Bush administration fighting
attempts to crack down on greenhouse gas emissions.
Or, depending on which interpretation prevails, Bush could be
giving his successor much-needed
breathing room on a volatile issue.
In its final weeks, the Bush
administration has moved to close
what it calls “back doors” to regulating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. It barred the
Environmental Protection Agency
from considering the effects of global warming on protected species.
And it excluded carbon dioxide
from a list of pollutants the EPA regulates under the Clean Air Act.
Environmentalists call the

top concern. But they say it could

would need to resolve quickly.
Obama “now has to clean up a
mess,” said David Bookbinder,
chief climate counsel for the Sierra

forcing him to act sooner than he
otherwise might have.”
Yet energy-industry lobbyists

They say the Bush administration’s
actions give Obama time and political cover to take a more deliberative
approach to emissions regulation
and avoid overly broad, overly swift
rules that could slow construction
projects for schools and businesses,
not just power plants.

represents energy industry clients at
the lobbying firm Bracewell and
Giuliani in Washington.
Underlying the debate is the
issue of how the federal government
should reduce America’s emissions
of the gases scientists blame for
global warming, including carbon
dioxide. Congress has long debated,
but never approved, a so-called capand-trade system to limit carbon
emissions.
Frustrated, environmental
groups have looked for other ways
to fight global warming. They have
pressed to list the polar bear, which
has seen its habitat dwindle as arctic
ice melts, as a threatened species.
The Interior Department consented
this summer, but later declared that
any protection for the bears under
the Endangered Species Act didn’t
extend to regulating greenhouse
gases.
Environmental groups also
sued to force the EPA to regulate
carbon dioxide as a pollutant under
the Clean Air Act. The Supreme
Court ruled the EPA had the power
to do that, but administration officials have declined to exercise it.
EPA Administrator Steven
Johnson issued a memo in late
December - as part of a review for a
proposed coal-fired power plant
expansion in Utah - that excludes
carbon dioxide from the list of pollutants the government must regulate under the Clean Air Act when
approving construction projects.
Environmentalists called the
memo a gift to the coal industry and
utilities.
“This is a desperate attempt to
interfere with the Obama administration’s ability to deal with greenhouse gases from power plants,”
said John Walke, a former EPA
attorney who is now clean air director for the Natural Resources
Defense Council.
Industry lobbyists say the
memo leaves the door open for
Obama to regulate carbon dioxide
eventually through the EPA - and
that it gives him time to solve a
wider problem. A broad rule, they
say, risks lumping school expansions, office construction and even
some home building into the same
regulatory process a power plant
would face.
The memo allows Obama’s
team time to solve those issues,
mstead maintains, so “they don’t
sweep in hundreds of thousands of
small building projects around the
country.”
Obama vows to push aggressively for a cap-and-trade bill as
president. Under this method of
trading, overall air quality goals are
set by the government, and individual facilities such as power plants
are given allowances for what they
can emit. Facilities that pollute less
than they are permitted can trade a
share of their allowance to others
that pollute more.
And the president-elect’s top
energy adviser promised during the
campaign that Obama would move to
regulate carbon under the Clean Air
Act within 18 months of taking office.
Now, environmentalists say,
Bush has put pressure on Obama to
act sooner - or risk watching states
approve new power plants without
regard to carbon emissions. Energy
companies have taken quick notice
of the EPA memo: Duke Energy
recently cited it in a court filing
supporting its bid to build a new
coal-fired plant in Indiana.

ASC serves 80-100 adult students and
nearly as many children each month.
Aikido is a joyful, non-competitive practice based on the concept of

Obama Pledges Schools
Upgrade in Stimulus
School infrastructure needs
estimated $225 billion
investment.
W
ashington — Barack
Obama probably cannot
fix every leaky roof and
busted boiler in the nation’s schools.
But educators say his sweeping school
modernization program — if he spends
enough — could jump-start student
achievement.
More kids than ever are
crammed into aging, run-down schools
that need an estimated $255 billion in
repairs, renovations or construction.
While the president-elect is likely to
ask Congress for only a fraction of
that, education experts say it still could
make a big difference.
“The need is definitely out
there,” said Robert Canavan, chairman
of the Rebuild America’s Schools coalition, which includes both teachers’
unions and large education groups.
“A federal investment of that magnitude would really have a significant
impact.”
Educators argue that spiffy
classrooms help children learn and
also remove health risks. But they
warn that Obama’s school spending
plan won’t stimulate the economy if it
requires matching funds from state and
local governments whose tax revenues
have been slashed by the recession.
And they caution that throwing huge sums of money at programs
that haven’t proven effective, such
as the federal “E-Rate” program that
gives technology discounts to schools,
won’t help student achievement or the
economy.
Obama is promising to give every student access to the Internet — the
federal “E-Rate” program. Outgoing
Education Secretary Margaret Spellings pointed out that billions already
has been spent through the “E-Rate”
program.
“It’s made very little difference
in enhancing student achievement,”
she said.
“We should never spend money
in the public sector, especially in education, unless we’re getting something
for it, unless it’s to
some good end,” Spellings said. “I commend
him (Obama) for taking
that on. That’s another
very ripe area. But not
unless it’s moving the
needle for kids.”
There’s widespread agreement,
however, that improving classrooms helps
student performance.
Studies in Houston,
New York City and
North Dakota have
made a link between
classroom conditions
and performance; in
the New York study, researchers found
kids in crowded classrooms scored
lower in math and reading.
Nearly half the principals in
primary and secondary schools said
deteriorating conditions are interfering
with learning, according to the Education Department.
Judi Caddick, a middle school
math teacher in blue-collar Lansing,
Ill., just south of Chicago, said in
the older part of her World War IIera school, classrooms had just two
power outlets, forcing teachers to
string multiple extension cords into
the rafters or to unplug a TV power
point presentation in order to plug a
computer in for a child.
“It looked like a spaghetti
bowl,” Caddick said.
Special education classrooms
flooded when plumbing backed up,
leaving an unmistakable smell on hot
days, not to mention allergy and asthma problems, despite efforts to clean
the carpet, she said. And hallways
were so dark and crowded, teachers
often couldn’t see shoving and bumping in time to stop fights.
A new building to replace that
old school is now almost complete.
The last group of students, the eighth
graders, moved in earlier this year.
“It’s a huge difference,” Caddick said. “We don’t have to have
necessarily state-of-the-art and fluffy
stuff. But at least when you don’t have
mold problems, and you don’t have
things that are broken, and you don’t
have an inability to use the technology,
it’s an investment.”
Upgrades can also make kids
healthier; measures to prevent mold
can decrease asthma, which is the
No. 1 chronic illness making kids
miss school.
Obama has given few specifics
about his economic recovery plan,
which could cost as much as $850 billion over two years. There is no word
on how much of that would go
to schools, or on how much
would go toward repairs versus
new construction.
The only dollar figure
from Obama so far is that
schools would share with roads
in an immediate infusion of
$25 billion for repairs and
rebuilding.
It would take 10 times
that amount or more to fully
modernize schools, according
to an analysis last month by
the American Federation of
Teachers. In all, schools need about
$255 billion in maintenance, new
construction, renovation and retrofitting for computer technology, among
other things, the union said.
An earlier estimate from the
National Education Association placed
the cost even higher, in the range of
$360 billion.
However, it might not take
nearly that much money to make a
dent. Federal dollars usually account
for only a portion of construction and
other school needs; state and local
governments also kick in a share.
But with state and local tax
revenues plummeting because of the
recession, where would states get the
money to match school upgrade dollars
from the feds? Already, 19 states have
lowered their tax revenue forecasts for
2009, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
“If there is any kind of matching requirement, it’s going to be more
problematic for state and local governments to match,” said David Shreve,
education policy analyst for NCSL.
“Because everybody is hurting badly
and cutting everything else.”
Obama aides working on the
stimulus package say they want projects that can start immediately, putting
people back to work. A study by the
Economic Policy Institute estimates
that spending $20 billion on deferred
maintenance in school districts across
the country would create nearly
250,000 skilled maintenance jobs.

The Perfect Kitty?
by Anne Singer
very cat owner wants a perfect cat, but perfection takes
work.
Anyone who allows their kitten to playfully attack their feet soon
learns that it is not so cute when their
full-grown cat is doing it. The same
goes for scratching. Establishing the
dos and don’ts is important.
Cats need to exercise their
born-with predatory instincts. If you
hardly ever pay attention to your cat,
then, by the time play time arrives,
your cat is a time bomb of energy
that’s just waiting to go off. You must
set aside some time to play with your
cat. Purchase some toys for different
levels of interactivity. Some owners
can play up close with their cat, others may need the distance of a fishing
pole-type toy.

Whether dealing with urine
problems or behavioral problems, the
most important aspect of the humanpet relationship is trust. Cats need to
trust their owners and expect to be

know of any please email me the info on the
band, establishment, and the day and time

many themes into one bold statement,
worthy of the vastness and beauty of Australia. The result is a passionate, moving epic,
gorgeously filmed; a powerful love story and
superb acting with the mysterious touch of
the Australian Aborigines. Kidman and Jackman deliver great performances with plenty
of chemistry, while young Brandon Walters
as Nullah will steal your heart as well as the

short story about a man who ages
backward, the premise of this creative,
epic fantasy/drama could have led to a corny
movie. With a stellar cast, great storytelling
and beautiful cinematography however, we
are presented with a grand fable about mortality, time and human destiny – as well as
a moving love story across a deep expanse
of time. Remarkably well constructed, this
tale hinges on every detail, so no wonder
it requires nearly 3 hours! You can decide
if you agree with Mark Twain’s quote “Life

Concerts in Retro:
My reviews of some of the shows I
saw last month. Remember this is only
my opinion.
At The Catalyst: According to a friend,
Derek, who saw both shows, Hell’s Belles
put on a far more energetic show than AC/DC
did just days before in Oakland. Could it be
the age difference, or do great tribute bands
freeze who they tribute in time? In this case,
it’s probably both. I really loved it when lead
singer Jamie Nova told fans to stop moshing
or they would stop playing. It worked. Plus
Turbonegra was an absolute wall of sound.
I talked briefly to lead singer Laura, who
said they copy Turbonegro, a Norwegian
punk rock band, exactly. I will definitely start
listening to this music.
Charismatic Snoop Dogg was joined
by Daz Dillinger and Kurupt and others to
round out Tha Dogg Pound. Snoop played
hits from all eras to satisfy all his fans young
and old and in between, including me.
At Coaster’s Lounge: Who’s Holdin’
did a better than the original cover of Dead
Or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round”. And The
Devil Himself played their last gig with their
old line up. Their new bass player, Shane,
will be joining them Sat. Feb. 7th at Coaster’s
Lounge. If you like heavy, pounding, but
musically complex alternative rock, you must

Rosario Dawson also does a brilliant job and is ready for even larger roles.
The film takes quite a few risks and takes a
man’s search for redemption to an extreme
– does it succeed? Some will find it life affirming, and others will say it goes too far and
gets too dark to be worth watching. If you find

brilliantly crafted, contrasts the lives of
two orphaned brothers who grow up

children are often exploited amid extreme

we witness his unbelievable journey to that

his year the Chinese New Year will welcome in the Earth Ox, on January 26th. In
Chinese Astrology, the year of the Earth
Ox represents the overall energetic pattern for the
year. In 2009 the Earth Ox symbolizes prosperity
through fortitude and hard work. Our new President Elect Barack Obama is an Ox; we should
benefit as a nation with his natural fortitude.
As in many traditions, the New Year
marks a symbolic start of a new beginning.
Generally filled with the notion of resolutions;
T
W
things one needs to give up as
a sacrifice for our indulgence
of the previous year. What is
this notion of “giving up” and
how does it integrate into our
modern lifestyle? Resolutions
do not have to be difficult
when expressed as an intention. Perhaps by
understanding this we can take a new perspective
on our New Years Resolutions. Symbolically the
New Year is a rebirth or new start and is the most
colorful, joyous festival of all Chinese festivals.
&RQVXOWDQW0HGLXP
hen we connect with our spirit, all things become possible. As a
psychic I have helped others unlock their potential to create greater
prosperity through new found opportunities. I also connect people to loved
ones who have passed away. I have worked with individuals, business, corporations and even law
enforcement around the world to help them to resolve their deepest issues. I can help you, too...
During a session decision making becomes clear, choosing relationships more rewarding
& fulfilling, work becomes more satisfying. Or perhaps a needed change in direction will
become clear. This is real living, fully grounded, fully authentic... fully yours!

The celebration last for two weeks and starts on
the first new moon of the year, ending on the
full moon with a Dragon Parade. Chinese New
Year is a multi-layered festival with much local
variation, but like ours it celebrates the common idea of a new beginning. It provides an
opportunity to sweep away all the misfortunes
accumulated from the past and to prepare for a
fresh new start. The Chinese say this is the time
the positive yang forces become dominant and
“inauspicious breath” Huiqi, is swept away. In
2009, what would you like to give birth to, and
what old ways need to be swept out the door in
order to manifest your intentions?
In feng shui and ancient traditions it is
common sense to protect what is gestating,
whether it be our families well being, or the
roots of fruit trees, each needs to be guarded until
spring arrives, when good health and vitality can
generally be attained. This protection is demonstrated by performing a ritual to ward off any
negative influences, i.e. karma, insects, illness,
evil spirits, or troublemakers. Traditionally some
sort of loud and colorful ceremony is performed
to stir up and shake out these influences from
their hiding places. Whether these influences are
found within us by holding self-doubt or mistrust,
or whether they hide amongst the clutter in our
lives, what
counts is
our willingness to hold
a “clear
heart felt intention”. All
the rest is
distraction
from our
purpose.
The preparation of the home or office for
the New Year is part of the “intention” to invite
in all the beneficial tidings. A deep cleaning to
fluff out the old and clear a path for new is recommended. Colorful prints and charms can be hung,
pictures of respected teachers, and splashes of red
can be used to adorn the home with auspicious
imagery. Offerings can be made to your hearth
(kitchen stove — the place of nourishment and
fuel for your body); sacred items are cleansed and
special dishes are prepared and eaten to nourish the
body and to attract beneficial chi for 2009.
Whatever your beliefs are for this New
Year, take a moment to review last year, the positive changes or lessons that came easily and the
ones that were more difficult. Look at what can
be swept away and what needs honoring, and like
the Ox, be strong and methodical to your unfolding
in this upcoming New Year.

shui, contact Pamela Ticoulat at Shelter for the

Nine Things to Prepare For the New
Year
by Pamela Ticoulat
1. Clear your Clutter
Sweep out the old to
make room for the new. If
you want more abundance,
then this is the time to make
room for it to come. For the
New Year, clean out the entire
house, removing anything that
you have not used during the
year; give it away or sell it
on Craig’s list. The area surrounding your front door is the
area that must absolutely be
clear of clutter, both inside and
outside to allow a free flow of
new energy into your home.
2. Clean your Windows
Clear vision is essential
for clear intentions and seeing
all new opportunities.
3. Give Your Home an Incense Bath
To capture the precious
sheng chi, burn incense in your living room near
your front door. Make sure your front door stays
open when you do this.
4. Perform Good Deeds
Help one another, be kind to your neighbor, visit a friend in need, and lend a helping
hand. On New Years day, visit family (especially
those older than yourself) and friends to pass on
your wishes on good fortune for the New Year.
Give red envelopes with money to children. This
is your way of passing good luck to the next
generation. Business owners can do the same
for their employees and associates. This shows
gratitude for all their support for the year.
5. Empower Your Kitchen Stove
The kitchen stove is your hearth and
represents your wealth and health because it is
a place from which your body receives nourish-
ment. Whole and balanced food
is essential for your lively hood,
and ultimately your wealth. Clean
your stove and make an altar
above it, as a representation of
nourishment for the year.
6. Share Wishful Intentions
Wish everyone you meet
a happy New Year by saying
“Happy New Year”, and “gong
xi fa cai” or “gung hai fat choi”,
which means, “wish you a prosperous new year.”
7. Create Gold Under your
Feet
Place a red packet of eight
coins under a mat just outside the
front door. This will attract good
fortune to enter the home.
8. Adopt A Pet
Adding a pet to your family can add vitality to your household. Dogs bring yang energy
into the home associated with
abundance, especially golden colored dogs. Cats,
especially white ones are the mythical guardian
of the west and autumn. Rabbits create romantic
chi in the home and are said to be suitable for
newly weds and young couples.
9. Celebrate the New Year
Invite friends and family over for the
New Years Eve, prepare your favorite dishes,
wear something red, light candles on any altars
and kitchen stove, honor the Earth Ox, place
your intentions, sing, dance and at 11pm, light
fire crackers to ward off any unwanted energy
for 2009.

n 2009, we have the unique opportunity to create a new foundation for our society, our economy,
and the consciousness of our planet.
With Pluto in Capricorn, situations are
intensifying. Capricorn is the master
builder, initiator and bringer of the light.
It’s action is transforming all society’s
structures; governmental, agricultural,
building and manufacturing industries,
while the line-up of Uranus opposing
Saturn brings crisis into the ways that
have been established. Uranus uses
crisis to awaken us.
The economy is going through a
natural breakdown, with chaos and uncertainty, as we relearn our connection
with our environment and community.
The contraction of economy is the labor
process of this new birth. 2009 will be
the year for creating a practical vision
for new systems that are respectful of
our interrelatedness with each other
and the earth. 2009 is an “11” year,
a time of tremendous creativity, and
with the need for confidence in the
task before us.
In the Mayan calendar, this is
a year entitled “Flowering”. 2008 was
a year of pruning; in 2009, the bud
begins to form, and by 2012, we see
the fruit.
Jupiter moves into Aquarius,
bringing the innovative creative mind
and group participation. It is the year
of the Ox, keeping us grounded and
practical while adding perseverance to
accomplish goals. Mercury retrogrades
through Earth. We examine all facets
of worth; money, self esteem, working
conditions. It’s a practical year, with the
opportunity for much accomplishment
and return.
I
Twelve opportunities for the
year 2009:
Aries (Mar 20-Apr 19): 2009
is preparing you for excitement and
new beginnings in 2010. To better
prepare yourself, take care of your
body, strengthen your feelings of self
worth. In your habits, find where you
resist your life. Your career is changing.
New people enter your life. This is one
of your best years for communicating
with groups. Later this year, you find
yourself making commitments in relationship. You have opportunities to find
the balance between independence
and responsibility in relationship.
Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): This
year, you are breaking free of restrictions in your self expression. Your
creativity finds a balance between radically new and traditional expression.
Relationship with your children will
change in unexpected and expected
ways. This year confront old belief systems, and let situations unfold without
too much planning. Communication
and learning open up tremendously. In
the winter, you meet new people, but
it isn’t until the fall that relationships
truly deepen.
Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): This
year brings changes in your domestic
life. Let your family reconstitute and
your home change. Open up a dialogue
with your partner about intimacy— if
not with your partner, then with yourself. What is true intimacy for you?
How do you share yourself, mentally,
emotionally, spiritually and/or physically, financially? This is the year to
gain practical results in the areas of
emotional expression and understanding, to review deeper feelings that can
support or distract from what you create in your life and in relationships.
Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 21): New
perspectives come into your life this
year. Study NVC (Nonviolent Communication) to create a deeper understanding of yourself and others, while
increasing your natural gift of communication. You learn how you block
your communications. Someone you
look up to helps you to untie the knots
in your relationships with your siblings.
Positive growth and well being result,
as you become conscious of the nature
of your relationships.
Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 22): This year
you open yourself up to other peoples’
values and perspectives. It becomes
the precursor to a very creative time
in your life, a time of expanding your
mind. Through doing something new
and different, you experience a reorientation. You benefit from confronting any
issues around habitual behavior. You
begin a transformative journey. Give
yourself space to allow the deepest
feelings to arise.
Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): You
identify yourself as a server and a
helper. Your humbleness can veil insecurities. In 2009, this system which
held your identity in place is changing. People in your life become more
exciting. Relationships benefit from
flexibility, seeing possibilities, rather
than what is difficult. This allows a new
space in your relationships. Greater
love and spiritual awareness motivates
your expression. As you let go of issues
around family members, you receive
an incredible gift.
Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Have
you been having anxious dreams
lately? Have you been caught up in
taking the back seat too often? 2009
promises to break apart unconscious
patterns, fears and need to control.
During the next two years, your life will
change. You go to another level with
how you choose to create your life.
Significant intuitive people support you
to take up your creative life. As your
family transforms, you access inner
resources of love and wisdom which
guide you through the year.
Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21):
You are undergoing a very dramatic
mental shift. You see yourself in a new
way because of the changes that you
have gone through in the last several
years. If you are carrying obsessive
thoughts or inner resentments, write
about them. A profound change can
now take place in your self perception.
This brings about the leaving of one
group and going into another group.
Creative expression becomes a larger
part of your life.
Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 20):
In 2009, changes in your home and
family free you. Change occurs in your
sense of responsibility. Now you have
an opportunity to see and understand
the situation from a much broader
perspective which allows a deep peace
and acceptance. Create a space in
your home for inspiration. Meditation
will bring tremendous benefits this
year. Review what you truly value and
why, your financial situation and how to
best use your talents. Creative expres-
(Dec 21- Jan 19): You
are being reformed.
Watch your resistance
to situations in order
to understand your deeper needs.
Reach out in 2009 for what will make
your life more fulfilling and enjoyable.
Let go of self judgment, so your full
creative potential can emerge. Retreat
often to listen to your inner voice and
strengthen your ability to trust it; then
go out, involve yourself with others,
and what you love. Familiar obstacles
will dissolve as you feel your excitement about new endeavors. Toward
the end of the year others experience
the positive accomplishments of your
hard work.
Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 17):
2009 is a year of doors opening.
People are attracted to you, and what
you teach. They feel inspired by you.
This year you create breakthroughs
with others. Relationships hold the
potential of renewal and overcoming
difficulties. You are inspired this year
to participate in the arts and literature.
You become recognized for your work.
Keep a dream journal and expect
powerful transformative dreams. Underlying systems that have organized
your life change.
Pisces (Feb 18-Mar 19): Relationships may feel blocked, challenged
or just a great responsibility. All that is
changing in 2009. One of the greatest
things you can do for yourself this year
is to go on silent retreat for at least a
week. Your inner connection with spirit
will be rich and rewarding. You may find
yourself writing or painting and loving
it. Some relationships end, and
some are renewed.
As the year comes
to an end, you can
sense new vistas
opening in your
life.
