Mission “Committed to Providing Premier Services and Facilities to our Members and Guests for the Enjoyment of the Ultimate Country Club Experience.” Clubhouse notes Generally Speaking By Mark Stahlman On Friday, June 17th, we had a major storm go through the center of Highland Springs, and with it came high winds and large amounts of lightning. We lost multiple trees to this storm and had our air conditioning unit struck by lightning. I would like to commend a few Staff members for their support in the aftermath of the storm: thanks to Derek and his crew, for the quick clean-up efforts; to Damon, for maintenance and clean-up around the Clubhouse and the pool; and to JoeLee, Anna, and Mikayla, for coming in early and getting the pool and deck cleaned up in time to open on a muggy 100-degree day. The 4th of July will be here before we know it! This holiday is one of the largest member attended events that we have. Members are welcome to bring guests, and if you plan on attending we just need to know the number of people you expect in your party. The fireworks will begin at dark on Monday, July 4th. There will be DJ music from 6:00 to 9:00pm. A buffet-style dinner will be served outside from 6:30 to 8:00pm. There will be airbrushed body art and a moon bounce for the kids. And a very important reminder, DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR LAWN CHAIRS! Turf Talk By Derek Wilkerson The HEAT is on!!! Summer is upon us quicker than normal this year and the rain events have been few and far between. So far, June has been 10-15 degrees above normal and the long range outlook is the same through early July. One of the side effects of hot, humid days is the typical afternoon thunderstorm. Although we have not experienced many of these so far in 2016, most of us have witnessed the powerful winds and the lightning that these storms can bring. While beautiful to watch from afar, we all know lightning’s deadly potential. Since I moved back in January 2015, we have encountered 5 direct lightning strikes on hole 13, leading to the implementation of new safety protocol by the Grounds and Greens Department to NO LONGER seek shelter in the bathrooms on hole 14. A survey by the National Weather Service determined that the intense June storm that rolled through Highland Springs was a microburst with 59 mile per hour wind gusts. In total, we lost 14 trees and had damage to the tops of 23 others. The damaged path could be seen on holes 18, 9, 8, and 1, on the practice facility, and on holes 10, 11, and 12 respectively. REMINDER: Fishing Rodeo times for July 4th are as follows: 6 years old and under at 8:00pm, and 7 years and older at 8:30pm. On July 4th, a Guest Pass will be required in order for ALL members’ and residents’ guests to enter through the front security gate. Members will need their membership vehicle sticker to enter on July 4th. Members and residents can pick up Guest Passes from the Highland Springs office. These passes will include the guest’s name and the respective member or resident host. YOU WILL ONLY NEED ONE GUEST PASS PER VEHICLE. I would like to thank all of the members and committee members that participated in the Tartan Classic and The Highlander. Your continued support of these events is what ensures that they will continue to be the area’s premier mens and womens golfing events. The most effective way to gain new members is through you, our members. It’s very important for the success of Highland Springs Country Club that we continue to grow, and with your help, we will. Call Jessica, or myself, in the office with your prospective member names, and we will follow up with them. Thank you for your continued support of the Club! 2 With the installation of the new weather station, we are fortunate to have lightning detection and advanced warnings. The warning alerts are sent to key Club personnel via text message, with notifications of danger at 30, 20, and 10 miles out. When we receive the lightning alert for any lightning within 10 miles, we remove all employees from the golf course until the danger has cleared. This benefit has been provided to Highland Springs Country Club from the PGA Tour for hosting the Price Cutter Charity Championship Golf Tournament. I would like to encourage everyone to follow our agronomic processes on social media. Our goal is to establish a social media presence so members can become more aware of the status of the course throughout the season. Tweets are updated on a regular basis—simply request permission to follow the closed group on Twitter: @HSCCAgronomy. Golf Updates By Brian Maloney Last month I announced our pending new scorecard and additional tee options on the golf course. I am happy to report that the scorecard is now in use, and the new tee options are being used by some Highland Springs members. In the future, we will play some event golf from the new tee options, which should add a new twist to our fun. The Maui Jim event was a huge success. There were 25 members who took advantage of the generous 25% discount that was offered on that day. Now I am happy to announce that we have become an authorized Maui Jim dealer. We will keep several styles in stock, and we will be able to special order great Maui Jim Polarized eyewear for you. In July, we will have two Couples Nine & Dine events—on July 5th and 19th. These casual 4-person scramble events continue to be a big hit with those who are participating. We invite you to join in on the fun. These events are always on Tuesday evenings, with a start at 5:45pm. The 9 holes of scramble golf is followed up with a nice meal in the Clubhouse. The cost to participate in Nine & Dine is $10 per couple, plus the 9-hole golf cart rental fee. And as an added bonus, every couple is guaranteed to win something! For the 4th of July weekend, the Board of Directors has once again voted to waive the “No Guest Play Before 12 Noon on Saturday” rule. So on July 2nd, should you have visiting house guests, you will now be able to make Saturday morning tee times! The 2016 Men’s Stroke Play Championship will take place on Saturday & Sunday, July 9-10. As always, the Championship flight will be played scratch, or without handicaps. All other flights will be scored Net Only, using 100% handicaps. Besides the prize purse associated with this event, the 36 holes—18 Saturday morning and 18 Sunday morning—will qualify 8 players from each flight to play in the Match Play Club Championship. Please mark your calendars and sign up for the Stroke Play Championship. On Sunday, July 17th, we will hold the 2016 Women’s Club Championship. This will be both a Gross and Net event, crowning champions in several categories. Ladies…we need you to participate! Please watch for more information in the Highland Springs Golfer Newsletter, and through the Golf Shop emails. Finally, the weather is hotter and the grass will be stressed in July, August, and September. It is even more important during this time of year that you follow golf cart usage rules, repair all of your ball marks, and sand and/or replace your divots. You have a responsibility to be a good golfer, and that doesn’t mean just shooting low scores. What it does mean is that you should follow proper etiquette and care for the course like it was your own... because it is! It was incredible tennis on the most grueling of surfaces. And now all of the Pros will turn their attention to the upcoming grass surface for the most prestigious event of all tennis—Wimbledon. Be sure to tune in and watch as American, Serena Williams will be vying for her next major title along with Roger Federer, who is looking for one more major to add to his incredible list of wins. And following that we will have the special treat of watching all of the Pros compete for their countries at the Olympics. It just doesn’t get any better than that. The good news is that you can get inspired to come out to our courts and play some exciting tennis of your own. We have many events scheduled in July for all members of the family, so come out and enjoy the exercise and fun!
