UNCOVERING OKLAHOMA'S DATE GUIDE BY DENNIS SPIELMAN Uncovering Oklahoma's Date Guide ~ Foreword~ "You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation." – Plato (429-347 B.C.) The concept of creating a date guide book was on my mind for many months, but the practically of printing an actual book or magazine ruined that notion. Then, behold! Apple released the iBooks Author app that allowed people to create digital books for the iPad (and in a PDF). When I had read the announcement, the date guide came to mind. Huzzah for modern technology! The dinner and a movie date night is simply becoming extinct and in many cases unacceptable - especially when there are so many fantastic, creative, and local places for amazing, fun, and unique dates. When I had first pitched around the idea of Uncovering Oklahoma to friends and co-workers, I shared with them a list of places I thought would be great to feature on the show. I was amazed as to how many places they've never even heard about before. It inspired me to do the show and the fact there are still so many interesting places that people don't know about drives me to this day. This book was written with all types of couples and dates in mind to show that there is something for everyone. There are pictures of every place, quotes from people as to why they personally think a particular place makes for a great date spot, and even links to watch YouTube videos (something I could have never done with a printed guide). This book is by all means not a complete edition. There's so much do that I haven't checked out for myself. With each new edition, I'll include more ideas and will expand to other cities throughout Oklahoma. I hope you find this guide to be inspiring, informative, and helpful with your relationships. Over the years, I noticed in a trend in search engine terms people were using to find the site. One of the most common keywords was "date ideas." I would capitalized on it by running articles with events that would make for a fun date and by having an archive of date ideas for various cities. Every now and then I would google date ideas myself to see what other sites suggested. I would find a few good gems here and there, but generally there weren't many suggestions, so I would keep writing and adding more and more ideas for people. ~ Dennis Spielman Producer of Uncovering Oklahoma [email protected] i OKLAHOMA CITY Oklahoma City is growing in so many ways - especially in the form of entertainment. May Ave. #117, Oklahoma City Nhinja Sushi & Wok The details in a restaurant are dead give away about what kind of experience you will have. I found that to be true recently when I visited Samurai, a small sushi place in the OKC Asian District. It's one of these places when you go when everything else is closed or too crowded or even worst - overpriced. Fear not, Samurai turned out to be an excellent choice. In the era where even sushi restaurants have drive throughs while blasting "G6" on the stereo – it is not easy to find a place that carries an authentic Japanese vibe...that is until you visit Samurai. In addition to 50 sushi rolls, the small restaurant seats about 25 people, offers appetizers, soups, meal combos, and the list goes on and on. Whatever choice you make at Samurai, it will be a five star treat! I have to say, Cafe 7 is a great place to bring a date. They have an amazing section of food that's customizable so both people, even vegetarians, should be able to find something that he or she will enjoy. When you first walk in, there's a counter with various menu cards. Simply select what you want and present it to the cashier. Then in about 7 minutes your food will be delivered. 13905 N. May Ave., Oklahoma City Web Site: www.nhinja.com It's not too expensive either, with each meal priced under $7, so if one person is paying for the date, it won't break the bank. However, when it gets busy it can be a challenge to find a seat, but there are patio seats for warmer days. Cafe 7 also offers wines and deserts. Plus, there's a cupcake shop in the same shopping plaza within walking distance. Highly recommended for a date, especially for first dates. 10 If you're curious to try sushi, consider Nhinja for their bite-size portions and low prices. It's a great place to eat at if either party of the date is "unsure" about sushi. You can easily get a wide variety of sushi to discover your favorites, including vegetarian options, in a fun, colorful, modern environment. Nhinja is enjoyable and it's across the street from Quail Springs Mall and the AMC Theater, so give it a taste and hit up the mall. They have starters such as spring rolls, gyoza, and lettuce wraps along with soups and salads, and as the name implies some good wok. Reduxion Theatre Lyric Theatre Reduxion Theatre 1613 N. "Whether it is your special someone or a date with your kids, you will always find a show fit for you. "Reduxion Theatre believes in boundary-pushing classical theatre, accessible, understandable and enjoyable to our patrons," said Managing Director, Erin Woods. "Our audiences don't passively watch a play, they experience it. At our intimate venue, the Broadway Theater near downtown Oklahoma City, we at Reduxion wish to engage attendees in the art of live storytelling - to reach out to them human-to-human. We want to bring them into our world and change it, so that each performance is different. We want audiences viscerally involved, as they are the key component of our art." Lyric Theatre has completed the renovation of the historic Plaza Theatre on NW 16th Street, bringing life back to this beloved neighborhood landmark. The renovated Plaza is now home to yearround productions of rarely-performed musicals, plays, and new works, all in an intimate 270-seat setting theatre. 11 Urban Art 1218 North Western Ave., Oklahoma City Urban Art Urban Art is a place where people are Video welcome to experience all aspects of the artistic process. Just simply walking around Oklahoma City's Bricktown district is a great way to get to know each other. "I think romance is anything honest. As long as it's honest, it's so disarming." ~ Kristen Stewart Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse 7 Mickey Mantle Dr., Oklahoma City Bricktown Candy Co. 100 E. California, Oklahoma City Web Site: www.bricktowncandy.com "The reason why you should come to Bricktown Candy on a date is because it's a safe bet. It gives you an opportunity to relieve your childhood, loosen up the date, and get the opportunity to be in a safe, public place that gives you the opportunity to learn about the other person face to face as oppose to a movie where's it's like, "Shhhhh! This final chapter includes general ideas that can be done just about anywhere as a date or even with friends. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain General Date Ideas Create A Movie/Play Have your date bring some unusual props and costumes from home. You may even do this as a group date. Then meet up somewhere and act out a scenario – comedies are best. To get the show rolling, start off by parodying your favorite films. You can even throw a spontaneous play at a park’s stage. Another idea: perform a show on someone’s apartment patio while others below watch. Ice Blocking Buy or create a large block of ice and use it to slide down a hill. To create your own ice block, find a cardboard box, line the box with a trash bag, fill with water (about 3″ or 4″ of water is all you’ll need for a nice, thick block of ice), put some rope in and out of the water to make a handle, and finally freeze the water. Be sure to take some towels to sit on the ice block. Light Painting Painting with light is a fun photography technique. It's called Light Painting because this is what you are actually doing while taking the shot - painting with light. You'll need the following items: a camera capable of long exposures, a tripod, a light source that you can move around, and a dark location. Set the camera's exposure to a relatively long value, set the focus to manual, and then take the shot. Once the shutter is open use your light to light the area that you want to "paint." You can use the light as a brash or as a pen to do precise work. Areas where you go slowly will be more lit then others. Once the shutter closes, inspect your work and keep playing until you get it right. A good web site for more information and examples is lightpainting.org Paint Use brushes or your fingers to create a masterpiece together. One can be the brush while the other is the painter to make it intimate. Thrift Store Challenge Set a price amount, like $5 or $10. Enter a thrift store, split up, and find either the funniest, coolest, neatest, ugliest, or whatever item for under the set price and buy it. Variations include finding a clothing item and have the loser wear it the rest of the day. Paint War Buy several large sponges, a tarp, some cheap rain ponchos, and a one color of paint for each person. Dip the sponges in the paint and throw them at each other in a field. Dark Dining Either one cooks or both cook an item and dine in total darkness. This European tend was designed to remove a person’s sense of sight to heighten their senses of taste and smell, giving them a better appreciation of the meal. 30 General Date Ideas Scavenger Hunt Picture Collection Ideas: On stage at a bar/nightclub In the dark with flashlights/phones at their faces Sitting with an unknown family at a restaurant Coping a pose from a movie poster With someone famous Reflection in something other than a mirror Standing in front of or sitting on a statue Holding an animal Group photo with someone wearing fishnets Hugging a stranger Jumping off of a swing Standing next to a Harley Davidson Playing with a pinball machine On a tree On a slide with one in front of the other Everyone fitting into a really tight space Bathroom graffiti Get a shot of someone kissing on the horse carriages Sharing one soda Behind or in front a retail store display Getting blasted with water A funny sticker placed outside Wear someone else's glasses Jumping in a fountain Dancing with a street performer Petting a buffalo Handcuffed by a police officer or in back of a police car Scavenger hunts work best with groups of people in a competition manner, but you could easily create a treasure hunt of clues and gifts for your partner to follow. Scavenger hunts can easily be done anywhere, from malls, graveyards, and even in Bricktown. You can involve video and pictures for more fun. They do require some preparation, but with the help of Google, ideas are easy to find. Another twist to the scavenger hunt game is to kidnap your partner’s favorite item and hold it for ransom until they meet your demands, which include items to complete the date such as popcorn for a movie or candles for a romantic dinner. Included to the right are series items to find for a picture taking based scavenger hunt. This set was written with Oklahoma City's Bricktown district in mind, but can be applied anywhere. 31 CREDITS DATE GUIDE EDITION 2.0 Just giving credit where credit is due in order of appearance! - Author photo taken by Stf Bidelspach - Oklahoma City Zoo elephants photo provided by the OKC Zoo - Oklahoma City Zoo and Samurai articles written by Sasha Spielman - Oklahoma River Cruises photo provided by Oklahoma River Cruises - Adventure Saturday's photo provided by OKC Riversport - Reduxion Theatre images provided by Reduxion Theatre - OKC Museum of Art photos taken by by Sasha Spielman - Mickey Mantle's photos provided by Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse - Nonna's photo provided by Nonna's - Armstrong Auditorium information provided by Armstrong Auditorium's John McLaughlin, with photos by Keith Rinearson and Aubrey Mercado - POPS photo provided by POPS Media Kit - Riverwind Casino photos and press release provided by Shaundra North Blundell of Koch Communications for Riverwind - Shall We Dance? photo provided by Shall We Dance? - Light Painting photographs taken by Stf Bidelspach All other photographs and passages by Dennis Spielman.
