It is visible from many places in Warsaw because of its location and size (over 230m). Note that it can be a good landmark during your trip. Please calibrate your GPS compasses. It is very important especially if you want to find your places in quick and accurate way. Task (20 points): Turn your GPS devices into the north-west direction. Do you recognize a symbol placed on the roof of the building? What kind of historical event does it represent? If you know then please write it below. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………………………………………………… The building at which you are looking now is a residence of PAST (Polish Telephone Jointstock Company. During the Warsaw Uprising it was a place of severe battles. On August 20, 1944 the building was captured by Polish insurgents of AK battalion „Kiliński” after 20 days of bloody fighting. The building was severely damaged. It was rebuilt in a simplified architectural form after the World War II. Nowadays it is one of the main objects which symbolize the Warsaw Uprising. Project implemented with a support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area and Norwegian Financial Mechanism under Scholarship and Training Fund Project partners: UNEP United Nations Environment Programme Program Narodów Zjednoczonych ds. Task 1 (10 points) Who was Stefan Starzyński? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Please calibrate your GPS compasses. It is very important especially if you want to find your places in quick and accurate way. Behind the monument you will see a building called “the blue skyscraper”. Although the project of it was ready in 50’s the building was completed in 1992. Some people says that it was caused by the rabbis who put a course on the place where the skyscraper was built. It is believed that the reason of putting a course was that before the World War II this place was occupied by the largest synagogue in Warsaw which was blown up by the Germans in 1943 Project implemented with a support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area and Norwegian Financial Mechanism under Scholarship and Training Fund Project partners: UNEP United Nations Environment Programme Program Narodów Zjednoczonych ds. Środowiska Centrum UNEP/GRID-Warszawa Picture illustrating great Synagogue and the blue skyscraper Task 2 (50 points): Compare aerial and satellite photos showing Bank Square. Then find the places where buildings have been changed or modified after World War II. Mark those changes on the carbon paper. Use legend given below: - new objects built after 1945 - destroyed objects that weren’t rebuilt after 1945 WHAT NEXT? Środowiska Centrum UNEP/GRID-Warszawa 1 Plac Krasińskich – droga po kanałach (pierwszy właz) 1 Krasiński Square – along the sewers (first manhole) Maximum number of points: 50 (1 task) The Krasinski Square has changed a lot throughout the centuries. At the beginning it was a vast courtyard which belonged to the palace. During World War II the square bordered the ghetto and there was a tram line running in the centre of the square in 1939-1945. During the Warsaw Uprising more than 5000 people escaped from the Old Town using sewers. They spent about 7 hours underground before they could reach the surface in Zoliborz district again. There are two plaques (on the wall of one of the buildings at Krasinski Square), which give you the information about the location of the manhole cover. Also there is a specially colored stretch of pavement that leads to the entrance. Take a look around the Krasinski Square. Note the contrast between historical buildings (the church, Krasinski Palace) and modern, green building of the Supreme Court. Task (50 points) Materials: present satellite image (Enclosure nr.1) Please look at the picture enclosed below. It describes the way along which Insurgents were translocating from one place in the city to another. Try to sketch on the map a route from the manhole at Krasiński Square to the manhole at New World street. Then, after coming back to school try to draw this route in Google Earth. What is the length of this route? Calculate it using measuring tool. Note that both manholes are marked on the map. It might be helpful for you. Środowiska Centrum UNEP/GRID-Warszawa 2 Plac Krasińskich – pomnik Powstania Warszawskiego oraz kościół garnizonowy 2 Krasiński Square – Warsaw Uprising monument and the Garrison church Maximum number of points: 50 (2 tasks) The Krasinski Square has been changed a lot throughout the centuries. At the beginning it was a vast courtyard which belonged to the palace. During World War II the square bordered the ghetto and there was a tram line running in the centre of the square in 19391945. Take a look around the Krasinski Square. Note the contrast between historical buildings (the church, Krasinski Palace) and modern, green building of Supreme Court. In the north corner of the square you can see the Warsaw Uprising Monument. It was erected in 1989. It commemorates those who were fighting for free Warsaw in 1944 in Warsaw Uprising. About 45000 insurgents took part in the uprising. Only 2500 of them had weapon on the first day, 1st August 1944. You can see that figures from the monument have different guns and clothes. About 200 000-300 000 Poles and about 25 000 Germans were killed during Warsaw Uprising. The location of the Warsaw Uprising Monument was chosen because of the presence of a manhole cover leading to sewers. (introduction by Małgorzata Rembiszewska) Task 1 (20 points) Can you recognize in the monument any other figure except from soldiers? Who is this man? ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………… On the opposite side of the square you can see the church. Nowadays it is a Field Cathedral of the Polish Army. Środowiska Centrum UNEP/GRID-Warszawa The original church which was replaced by the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army Before World War II Poland was a multicultural country. During that time over 30% of a population in our country belonged to national minorities. That is the reason why there were so many other religious churches in Warsaw.
