Since 1997, he has led the Bill Charlap Trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, now recognized as one of the leading groups in jazz. Charlap is the artistic director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at the 92nd Street Y, and he has produced concerts for Jazz at Lincoln Center, the JVC Jazz Festival and the Hollywood Bowl. A two-time Grammy nominee, Charlap is married to renowned jazz pianist Renee Rosnes, and the two often collaborate in a duo piano setting. In the spring of 2010, Charlap and Rosnes released “Double Portrait”, their acclaimed duo piano recording on the Blue Note label. “Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved… when he sits down to play, the result is an embrace, an act of possession. The tune rises, falls, disappears and resurfaces in new forms as Charlap ranges over the keyboard with nimble, crisply swinging lines, subtly layered textures, dense chords and spiky interjections.” ~ TIME Magazine Tickets Tickets available available at: at: Bushwakker Bach & Beyond, Brew Pub, PayPal Bach && Conexus & Beyond Box &www.jazzfestregina.com www.jazzfestregina.com Office, jazzregina.ca Tickets Tickets available available at: at: Applause Regina Theatre, Inn, Bach Bach & Beyond Beyond & www.jazzfestregina.com & BlueKevin MoonKasha Marquee Thursday, June 16, 2016 Bushwakker Brew Pub 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm $12 Advance • $15 At the Door A.W. Cardinal: Vocals/Guitar Jasmine Colette: Vocals, Bass, Drums Blue Moon Marquee is a Screamin’ and Hollerin’ Gypsy blues band that stems from the Alta. Dusty Hoodoos and the Rocky Mountains. A.W. Cardinal and Jasmine Colette primarily write and perform original compositions. Influenced by anything that swings, jumps or grooves. Artists such as Lonnie Johnson, Blind Willie Jonson, Charley Patton, Howlin’ Wolf, Bill Jennings, Big Bill Broonzy, Django Riendhart to name a few. After living and performing in Montreal and New York City, and being immersed in the jazz and blues scene cutting his teeth, A.W. Cardinal decided it was time to head home the Rocky Mountains and bought a Greyhound ticket as long as he is tall; back to the great Canadian west to record the Album “Stainless Steel Heart.” There, In the winter of 2012, A.W. met with Jasmine Colette, a Hoodoo Lady who has toured the bulk of North America over the last six years as a bassist, singer and a hoop dancer, performing with the likes of Paul Pigat, Bill Bourne, Andrew Loog Oldham, Tanya Tagaq, David Gogo, Simon Kendall, Madagascar Slim and Wyckam Porteous. Within two weeks they had recorded an album and ever since then Blue Moon Marquee was formed. BMM tours regularly all around Canada. Check the tour schedule for their up and coming performances. Blue Moon Marquee have perfected a live style of playing, a duo that sounds like a full band. Jasmine Colette (the rhythm section) not only masters the stand up bass but also keeps the swing with her feet by playing a kick drum with one foot, a snare and high hat with the other. “A.W. is a large man, with sharp eyes often hidden under the shadow of a faded black hat and Guitar, with a singing voice as “thick and as black as coal smoke that barrels out like a Raging bull.” Blue Moon Marquee’s chemistry transcends the music itself and the way Colette’s angelic tones lift Wesley’s beaten down “Bukowski-esque mystique” is something that will surely stay in your head for a while and make a lasting impression. To date Blue Moon Marquee have released two full length albums of their original compositions - “Stainless steel heart” (2013) - “Lonesome Ghosts” (2014) - An online E.P. “Last Dollar” was released in 2015. They are set to record their next album during the Winter months, set for a Spring 2016 release. Building on the strong foundation of their last release, the critically acclaimed, and iTunes Canada championed, Breaking Hearts, this new ten song effort effectively captures a band at the peak of their abilities doing what they do best. The Poet’s Dead, recorded in late 2011 under the production guidance of indie-rock recording geniuses Gus Van Go and Werner F (The Stills, Hollerado, Priestess), clearly displays that Rah Rah has truly fine-tuned the essence of the band and refined the maturity of their sound. “Recording with Gus and Werner was one of the most rewarding challenges I’ve ever been a part of,” says band member Erin Passmore. “They understood how and when exactly to push us and I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to create with their help and guidance.” Lyrically, The Poet’s Dead showcases some of their finest, most direct song writing yet and is their strongest collective step forward. From the self-reflections of “20s”, “Prairie Girl” and the album’s title track to the wistful hope of “First Kiss” and the twisted anything-for-love paean “I’m A Killer”, the songs discuss maturity, growing up and life in a rock and roll band from a group that have spent much of the past few years doing exactly that. These are songs handcrafted to make you think, to create dreams and to break your heart. Rah Rah formed as a trio in 2007, originally created by Erin Passmore (vocals, drums, keys, guitar) and Marshall Burns (vocals, guitar). By 2008 they had been joined by Kristina Hedlund (violin, keys, accordion, vocals) and Erin’s brother Joel Passmore (formerly of Despistado and Sylvie) on bass. Later that year another former Despistado member Leif Thorseth (guitar) also joined the band. The band is rounded out by its newest member, Jeff Romanyk (drums, keys, guitar). The members of Rah Rah share a collective mentality, taking turns taking the lead, both in song writing and while on stage. The melodic male/female vocals and shared instrumentation traded off seamlessly (Erin Passmore and Jeff Romanyk both play drums, keyboards and guitar, while Kristina Hedlund plays violin, keyboards and accordion), plus a true level of fun throughout ensures that a Rah Rah show will not disappoint. “The members did a lot of instrument switching and almost everyone in the band sang lead on at least one song,” writes Andrew Sacher of Brooklyn Vegan in a recent live review. “And just in case their catchy songs weren’t enough, their stage antics are sure to be remembered, which included throwing “R” “A” & “H” balloon letters into the audience, shooting out confetti, and breaking open a piñata at the end of their last song.” Rah Rah was crowned “Best New Canadian Band” and “Best New Alternative Band” by iTunes Canada in 2009. The band’s songs have also been featured as iTunes Single of the Week and Starbucks Pick of the Week in Canada. The band has toured incessantly behind their previous two albums, sharing tours with the likes of Minus The Bear in Canada and USA, Wintersleep in Europe and Canada, and labelmates Said The Whale. Expect the band to continue touring heavily in support of The Poet’s Dead. Their inaugural concert was March 20th, 2013 at the Exchange. This band started by the want and need of the musicians of the city that wanted to have the opportunity to play concert jazz repertoire. The band is a standard instrumentation big band. 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, bass, piano, and drums. Featured vocalist Pat Steele. This follows in the tradition of the Bob Moyer Big Band. Bob’s band was the ‘training ground’ where many people in RJO got their start in the playing scene in Regina. Bob’s band, although it is a society big band, was primarily a dance band in the 80’s and performed regular Saturday shows at the old Landmark Inn in the night club Bernsteins. The Bob Moyer Big Band is still performing shows but directed by Brent Ghiglione, with the guidance of Bob’s wife and singer Pat Steel. The musical director of the RJO is Brent Ghiglione. Brent was a member of the Moyer band since 1979 and leads that band today. Brent started his musical career as director of the Regina Police Jr. Bands, then Campbell Collegiate Music program from 1989 to 2006. Brent is currently director of bands at the University of Regina. The band plays a wide variety of music from several different big bands, as well as some original music written from members of the band… and of course Bob Moyer.
