O If you had your choice of destinations to celebrate
the start of the New Year, where would you choose?
There are a few factors that I’d have to consider;
weather is always a bonus, given that, weather-wise,
living in the UK can be challenging at times; friendly
locals would be another list topper and clearly my
destination would have to have a reputation for its
ability to party. No brainer then, it has to be Brazil!
Coincidentally, tilllate makes its first foray into South
America, with a five-gig tour in conjunction with
Brazilian events agency GreatFinds (www.greatfinds.
com.br), what’s that you say? “If a well-known Danish
beer did New Year trips?”
Having spent my formative years being amazed by the talent of the Brazilian
football team and latterly of some of the talent watching them from the stands;
memories of beautiful girls, bright colours, the samba rhythm and amazing
atmosphere has my expectation level soaring as I land in Brazil. Having
visited Brazil briefly last year and sampled the unique atmosphere, I can only
guess at how much it will multiply at the turn of the decade!
Party Calendar
Aluisio and Conrado Ribeiro are the guys behind GreatFinds and between
them have put together a five-date tour that sees the tilllate bandwagon
travelling throughout Brazil during the curse of our two week trip. First up is
the popular holiday destination of Buzios, a three-hour car journey from Rio
de Janeiro, situated on the coast and bursting with personality. Privilege is
the stand out venue in the area and no stranger to international visitors. NYE
will see tilllate on the famous beach of Praia do Rosa welcoming the new
decade in the company of 40,000 close friends! Next up is Confraria Das Artes
on the island of Florionapolis before a short flight down to Porto Alegre and
Café De La Musique. Cinco Club in Belo Horizonte hosts the final party of the
tour before we fly back to Sao Paolo for the connection home.

MONDAY 28 DECEMBER ‘09 @ PRIVILEGE, BUZIOS, BRAZIL
First stop on the Tilllate tour is Buzios and the
Privilege club (www.privilegebuzios.com.br).
Buzios is a few hours drive from Rio, a popular
holiday resort whose population quadruples
during the summer months. Privilege sits in
the idle of a waterfront Mecca of bars and
restaurants. The street is packed as people spill
out of every establishment, this is December
Brazilian style; soaring temperatures, scantliy
clad clubbers, each sporting beaming smiles, all
seemingly en route to Privilege!

huge speakers with an open-mindedness
of clubbers falling in love with house
music for the very first time! Is this
clubbing heaven?”
Privilege is no stranger to international visitors, having
previously played host to the likes of Carl Cox and Steve
Angello. Glass walls surround a packed dancefloor as
Felipe Assad warms the crowd up. Above him and in front
of a huge video screen, the Privilege dancers go through
one of their carefully rehearsed routines, dressed in
corsets and feathers, the sense of theatre is dramatic and
adds to the atmosphere inside the now full main room. The
balcony is now almost completely filled as VIPs look over
the mayhem down below.
It’s A Privilege
The mighty sound-system growls and fires out thumping
beats and throbbing bass, much to the delight of the
dancefloor, and as Marquinhus SP takes it up a notch, they
cheer in anticipation. A gymnast is lowered from the
ceiling on a huge hoop at the end of a metal chain and
proceeds to spin high above the dancefloor; another
balances on the beams high above and proceeds to go
through her routine in time to the music, add to that the
burlesque show above the DJ and this is clubbing theatre
at its finest.
The crowd is amazing, as you would expect from a country
that is famed for producing some of the world’s finest
looking beings! But it’s more than that; they lap everything
thrown at them from the huge speakers with an openmindedness of clubbers falling in love with house music
for the very first time! Is this clubbing heaven? I’m not sure
if this is a typical reaction or if it’s fuelled by the time of
year and the fact that it is Brazilian summer time and
everyone is on vacation but the atmosphere inside
Privilege is as good as I’ve experienced in my long
clubbing life.
The Sun Rising
As the sun begins to rise, there can be no better place to
enjoy it than the centre of the dancefloor where, through
the clubs glass walls, we bask in the warmth of another
beautiful day in this Brazilian paradise. Time to say
goodbye to our new friends and prepare for the next stage
of our trip, the famous Praia Do Rosa in Santa Catarina.

THURSDAY 31 DECEMBER ‘09 @ REVEILLON 2010,
PRAIA DO ROSA, SANTA CATARINA
After a three-hour drive back to Rio and a 50
minute delay on the tarmac while a heavy rain
storm passes, we’re off to Floripa, a couple of
hours flight south and our base for the next few
days. It still doesn’t feel like New Year, Christmas
trees and sweltering heat is not easy for my brain
to process! NYE sees tilllate at Praia Do Rosa,
Santa Catarina for Reveillon 2010.
Praia Do Rosa is one of Santa Catarina’s most famous
beaches and given the multitude of breathtaking
beaches in the area, it’s a tag it wears with pride.
Parador Swell is the location on the beachfront and the
view is nothing short of spectacular!
Croation Sasha Agram is the host of tonight’s party, and
a prominent member of the Brazilian club scene since
he moved to the country over a decade ago. He is first
on deck duty and proceeds to deliver a smooth warm up
filled with chunky beats, cool vocals and hypnotic
chords as the beach below the bar fills up. 40,000 are
expected to fill the long stretch of sand and celebrate the
passing of another year.
On The Beach
As the clock ticks towards midnight numerous fireworks
start going off up and down the beach, lighting up the
sky and reflecting on the sea, each being met with a
huge roar from the masses. GreatFinds/tilllate tour
manager Conrado Ribeiro takes to the stage and starts
the countdown. Fireworks and champagne corks
explode in unison as 2010 makes a grand entrance.

Back on the dancefloor and Brazilian DJ Willian Celuppi
has taken over and proceeds to deliver a chunky,
tech-driven set that is lapped up by all and sundry.
Percussion is provided by Jonnie, whose unique take on
the art is as good as I’ve witnessed anywhere!
Combining unusual objects such as oil drums and steel
poles, he delivers a wicked percussive accompaniment
to the driving beats.

1 January 2010, the sun rises over a stunning beach and
it’s time to head back to our beach cabin and chill out on
the hammock - there are definitely worse ways to kick
start the year!

MONDAY 10 JANUARY ‘10 @ CONFRARIA DAS ARTES, FLORIPA
The tilllate party rolls into Floripa, Brazil’s
answer to Ibiza, on the Monday that most
of the country head back to work after their
Christmas vacation and a day that has seen
torrential rain fall constantly for the past five
hours or so. I have some doubts that even party
hardened Brazilians will make the effort, brave
the elements and come out to play on a school
night. How wrong was I?
The façade of Confraria Das Artes gives more than a nod
to the country’s colonial cousins with stunning
Portuguese architecture and colour. Inside has been
converted into two different areas; the main room, which
is sparse with some seating up either side and VIP areas
either side of the DJ booth, provides the perfect platform
for a night of house driven mayhem. Room two is more of
a chilled lounge area, where food can be eaten, groups of
friends catch up and the atmosphere is of a much more
laid back nature. The two rooms compliment each other
perfectly and this stunning venue plays hosts to guests
from all over the world.
The Face
Tonight’s party has captured the imagination of the
locals, the tilllate magazine party provides ample
temptation to party but, as if that wasn’t enough, Monica
Monteiro (Ribeiro) is also in town, checking out models,
looking for ‘The Face’ of 2010. And, given that she was
Gisele’s manager for over a decade, not to mention
numerous other highflying Brazilian models, the ladies
have turned out in force.
Monday Madness
The Beckers are first up and have the main room floor
packed early on, it doesn’t hurt that the venue has hit
capacity, with over a thousand party animals refusing to
acknowledge the start of another working year. Chunky
beats with a gentle sprinkle of commercial house keeps
the floor happy before tilllate’s Iain Thomson takes over.
Taking things up a notch, the main room reacts
accordingly and by the time resident DJ Kleo Kinetic hits
the decks, the atmosphere is electric. The more than
capable Canadian proceeds to drop some crowd
favourites rounding off a wicked party. Is Monday the
new Saturday?
