Our Faithful+Gould 20th Anniversary Celebration
Staying Positive. Staying Focused on You. FALL 2012 Our Faithful+Gould 20th Anniversary Celebration PRESIDENT & MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE: REFLECTING ON 20 YEARS 1995 Celebrating our 20th anniversary has provided me with the opportunity to reflect on where we have been … and where we are going. 1 We expanded our client base in 1995 and had early success with Roche in South Carolina, ProGold in North Dakota and Exxon Mobil in Texas. The ProGold Corn Wet Milling facility was a particularly memorable project with a number of us spending two to three nights stranded in a hotel due to a severe winter storm, which was not a great experience as the hotel soon ran short on supplies! 1996 In 1996, we were acquired by WS Atkins, which was a private company, and in June of the same year it became a publicly listed company on the London Stock Exchange. There was little impact for us in the U.S., as we were the only representative company here, but we were expected to grow and we did by expanding our client base and service offerings. We opened up offices in Houston, Phoenix, Long Beach, Portland and Princeton. 1992 2002 In 1992, we entered the U.S. market with one client, Pillsbury, in Minneapolis. This vote of confidence was based on our work in the UK with Haagen Dazs. We had no idea how long any of us would stay in the U.S. because there was no long-term commitment, and we weren’t sure we had the U.S. expertise to penetrate other client organizations. However, we were determined to establish a presence here, and our staff made a commitment to relocate despite the worry of it coming to an abrupt end. I believe this commitment was the foundation for our success as most of our UK competitors, who were also interested in the U.S., were only able to work here on a temporary basis. A huge leap in our expansion occurred in 2002 when we purchased Hanscomb. We wanted to accelerate growth and looked for a company with a great reputation and a broader geographical footprint. We also wanted a company that worked in different markets. Hanscomb brought all of this to the table with minimal client overlaps and complimentary skill sets for our expanded client base. With the purchase, we changed our name to Hanscomb Faithful+Gould. Fall 2012 2005/2006 We continued to grow in 2005/2006, and we made the decision to rebrand Faithful+Gould by dropping the Hanscomb name. We designed a completely different look with modern colors and we came up with our tag line of ‘constructive expertise’. We undertook regional conferences to roll this out worldwide. Our brand launch event in Orlando was particularly enjoyable and motivating. It brought about a real excitement with the new brand and a new strategic plan. In the past five years, we have continued to develop our major client base with the help of our Client Engagement Program (CEP), and we continue to improve our opportunities with initiatives like Bid to Win and enhancements in our commercial processes. We have opened up operations in Brazil and Canada and repositioned our services to lead with project management, and we now have an extended Atkins family in North America. Pillsbury Dinner Jonathan Marshall and Sue Anderson (Yoplait) As I reflect on the last 20 years, I can confidently say that we have achieved a great deal. I have watched us progress from a handful of staff in 1992 to almost 550 today, but as president of the company, the thing I am most proud of is seeing how much Faithful+Gould staff have developed in that period and how diverse we have become without losing our brand or our culture. Lastly, we owe a great deal to our clients, not the least of which is Pillsbury, who gave us our first opportunity. We marked our 20th anniversary with a commemorative dinner in Minneapolis in September. We were particularly delighted that many of the original Pillsbury team joined us to celebrate. Some of them had since retired, and some had moved on to General Mills following the Pillsbury merger. They have remained our clients and trusted friends. It was wonderful to see the team reassembled and to have a chance to express our heartfelt gratitude. Pillsbury Plant, Indiana Our company remains strong with a tremendous client list and a broad range of services across many sectors. We are continuing to grow, so there is a lot to be proud of and to look forward to as a member of Faithful+Gould. We welcomed more than 100 guests including clients, Minneapolis office staff and management from across Faithful+Gould North America. Clients in attendance included BioAmber, Cargill, Laura Okell Dow Chemical, Fairview Health Services, Marketing Coordinator General Mills, Hennepin County and Lifetime Fitness, as well as professionals from many of the Twin Cities’ top architecture and engineering firms. The annual Bowling on the Green Event held at Brit’s Pub doubled this year as a 20th anniversary celebration for Faithful+Gould in North America. Displays with pictures of Faithful+Gould personnel over the past 20 years and a timeline infographic were created especially for the event. Guests were also asked trivia questions from the year 1992 for a chance to win tickets to a Minnesota Vikings game. “Bowling on the Green” Lawn Bowling, or Bowls, is a game where players roll biased balls so that they will stop closest to a smaller ball called the Jack. Its typically played on a large rectangular “green” of neatly manicured grass. The Brit’s Pub 10,000-square-foot Bowling Green opened in 1998 and has hosted our Faithful+Gould Bowling on the Green event for the last eight years. 5 Fall 2012 We welcomed many staff who began their careers with Faithful+Gould North America in Minneapolis, including Paul Wood, Tim Horner, Phil Kirby and Trevor Green. A common theme of the migration of staff in North America over the last 20 years has been moving from Minnesota to warmer climates, so it seemed only fitting that the chilly weather forced the event indoors. The fun ensued despite the cold weather and a few brave souls still endured the cool evening air for some lawn bowling. It was an enjoyable evening to celebrate the growth of our business in North America, and specifically Minneapolis, over the past 20 years. Senior Vice President and Food and Beverage/Agribusiness Sector Lead Jonathan Marshall shared this about the occasion, “I feel extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity by Faithful+Gould and our clients over the past 20 years to work in the United States on many challenging, yet rewarding, projects. Many familiar faces have moved on, but always a great team seems to remain in place here in Minneapolis. We take immense satisfaction and enjoyment from the projects we work on and the friendships within our offices and project teams.” Kevin continued, “The event was outstanding for catching up with many individuals I haven’t seen for years, as well as meeting new clients and colleagues from across the country. Overall, I’d say the event was more than a success … plus, we all got to relive the wonderful hair Jonathan Marshall sported in the late nineties!” All involved felt the event was a great celebration. Regional Vice President Tim Horner said, “The Brit’s annual event is something that I, and I am sure many others, look forward to. This year’s celebration continued the tradition of bringing together clients and staff to have a great time. I was also pleased that we were able to host our regional and national leadership teams and allow them to witness such a dynamic team of employees and clients - past, present and hopefully some new - which is very refreshing considering the economic times we’re in. The diversity of the client base and the broadening of our service offering are major positives for Minneapolis. The future is looking bright.” An annual celebration, like the Bowling on the Green event, is a great way to build our brand in the Minnesota marketplace and stay connected with our local client network, business partners and colleagues. It offers opportunities to introduce our project management clients to our cost estimating clients, which helps demonstrate our depth and diversity of professional services. We are already looking forward to the 2013 9th Annual Bowling on the Green! Kevin Wiese & Ian Greenwood of Fairview Health Services RVP Tim Horner, Eric Soukoup & Jesse Lovejoy Paul Lakin with former F+G employee Phil Malcom of Carlson Hotels & long time F+G friend Shane Higgins of Brit’s Pub The ‘clubhouse’ event space was packed Emphasizing Jonathan’s comment, Minneapolis Managing Director Kevin Wiese said, “One highlight of the evening was a discussion with Derik Ward of Cargill. I’ve had several conversations with Derik over the phone, but it’s always nice to put a face to the name. He was very complementary of the team Faithful+Gould has working on Cargill projects, both in his division and across its other business units.” Derik is the project manager for Cargill – Horizon Milling, the recently completed $30-million integrated bakery resources project in Portland, OR. Staff from our Minneapolis and Portland offices have been working on this project since October 2011. Fall 2012 6 Name: Amir Setayesh Project Site: Multiple HAL clients; ON - SITE STAFF Our Roles Name: Ryan Brady Lender’s Technical Advisor (LTA) Project Site: Royal Canadian Mounted Police; Vancouver, British Columbia Job Title: Technical Director Years with F+G: 11 years Since June 2009, Faithful+Gould has provided various consulting services for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) “E” Division Headquarters Building outside Vancouver, BC. The RCMP Project is a Public Private Partnership (PPP), procured under a contract between the Canadian government and a development partner to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the new facility. The prime contract is in effect for a period of 28 years, including three years of construction and 25 years of facility management. The project has a total value of $966 million, including $263 million for construction of the facility. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Public Works & Government Services (PWGS) Project Sponsors (Equity) Project Agreement Credit / Shareholder Agreements Green Timbers Accommodation Partners (GTAP) Lender (Debt) FAITHFUL+GOULD Independent Certifier (IC) Facilities Management Major Subcontracts FAITHFUL+GOULD Lender’s Technical Advisor (LTA) 7 Fall 2012 Design-Build Joint Venture As LTA, we are responsible for producing Technical Due Diligence reports during the initial programming and design stages. This requires extensive analysis of the accuracy and robustness of the capital cost estimates, construction schedule, life cycle cost program, project management approach, facilities management approach, commercial arrangement and design. For the past 2.5 years we have maintained monthly site visits to monitor construction progress, receive construction and design briefings, review and authorize any changes, authorize payments to the design-builder and produce reports outlining general project progress and health. At the end of the year, we will assume an operations monitoring role, requiring periodic site visits to ensure that the facility is being maintained and operated properly, and assess whether there has been any change to the risk profile of the project. Independent Certifier (IC) The IC role is specific to PPPs, particularly those outside of the U.S. Canadian provincial procurement policy requires that both the public and private partners in a PPP jointly engage an IC for the purposes of certifying that construction has been completed in accordance with the output specifications. This certification is required for the public entity to occupy the facility and that the flow of service payments may begin. For this role, we worked closely with our client and streamlined processes for the tracking of progress against project agreement obligations and created efficient, useful reporting tools. The Amarillo location is one of three locations at which Faithful+Gould will be working. The project kicked off the week of September 17, 2012, and will last until approximately April 2013. Sean’s role on the project in Amarillo is to help in facilitating implementation and training assistance of the new cloud system within the Xcel workforce. These practices, combined with the client’s standard procedures, help in saving time and costs and eliminating errors. Faithful+Gould’s contribution to the project is bringing our diversification and understanding of how to reach the client using multi-cloud based management systems, which are very important in modernizing corporations. Sean is looking forward to seeing what Amarillo is all about and “helping the client achieve its goals and implementing best practice in change management.” He says that he is enjoying the beautiful night skies and that he has never seen so many stars. Fall 2012 8 LONDON 2012 I had the privilege of taking one of our clients to the London Olympic Games in August. It was a first for the client and myself, and one that we will both remember fondly for a long time. The whole experience was fantastic with top notch organization and hospitality the whole day from leaving the hotel in Kensington to arriving for a pre-event buffet inside Olympic Park, and then being in the stadium itself. The atmosphere inside the stadium was amazing and everyone seemed to be amazed by the whole experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the seven different athletic events we watched, which included the women’s heptathlon, men’s long jump and women’s 100 meters. The following day I went to Hyde Park and watched some of the women’s triathlon and then ventured inside the Park to watch some more events on the big screens. Being able to watch the events on the big screens and share that experience with the thousands of spectators who couldn’t get tickets to the live events was incredible. More big screens were strategically located throughout the city to extend that experience to even more people. It made for a fabulous two days and a memorable Olympics. There was such a buzz around the city that I’ve never witnessed before. Now I’m looking forward to Rio in 2016! Paul Wood President & Managing Director
