“Cortex Innovation Community: Positioning St. Louis for the Future”
I
f you live in the St.
Louis area, chances
are you’ve not only
heard of, but have
seen the impacts of the
Cortex Innovation Community. Founded in 2002, Cortex was
created by Washington University, Saint Louis University,
University of Missouri – St. Louis, BJC Healthcare and
Missouri Botanical Garden to serve the region as a hub for
bioscience and research. Over the past decade, Cortex has
grown into just that – a booming epicenter for innovation, a
home for promising startups and a centralized location for
advanced research.
The Cortex mission reaches far beyond St. Louis. On a
global level, Cortex is working to position St. Louis as a
nationally and internationally recognized innovation and
technology hub. Through the transformation of 200 acres in the heart of St. Louis’ central
corridor, Cortex is rehabbing this industrial neighborhood and transforming it into a
vibrant, 24-7, live-work-play-learn community.
In 2012, Cortex introduced its mixed-use master plan to guide the development of
the district over time. As of today, Cortex has made great headway in implementing
this vision. The first phase of the development, completed prior to 2010, included
the Center for Emerging Technologies, the Cortex I office and lab building as
well as DuPont and West End Lofts. Cortex is now completing the second phase
of development, which includes a new, three-acre park space known as Cortex
Commons, Shriners Hospital, the @4240 building, the BJC @ The Commons
office building, and CoFactor Genomics laboratories, among a long list of other
exciting additions. With the completion of these projects, the community will see
Washington University’s Office of Technology and Management, CIC-St. Louis, Boeing Ventures, Manifest Digital and AB
Mauri all up and running in the district.
Also under construction in Cortex today is the region’s first IKEA store, which will open in fall 2015. IKEA promises to
bring some 300 full-time jobs to the community.
Combined, the development projects completed and underway will
achieve some $500 million in investment, 1.6 million square feet of new

and rehabbed facilities, 4,000 construction jobs and 2,850 permanent

jobs with an annual payroll of $170 million. In addition, we’ll soon see

construction start on a new MetroLink station, which recently received
competitive federal TIGER Grant funding.
The Chamber is proud to announce the AwardLooking ahead, Cortex is now planning the next phase of
ees for the Annual Business Awards:
development, including attraction of new companies and creation of
MARK SCHNUCK – NAI DESCO
a space for TechShop. TechShop is a national maker space, providing
2014 Business Person of the Year
incredible tools to entrepreneurs. The addition of TechShop adds to the
growing list of innovation centers located within Cortex, including the
WOLKEN FAMILY DENTISTRY
2014 Excellence in Retail/Service
Center for Emerging Technologies, BioGenerator, and CIC-St. Louis.
The future is bright. With the work completed and the many exciting

initiatives underway, the Cortex Innovation Community is positioning
2014 Cornerstone
St. Louis as an entrepreneurial powerhouse that will attract talent and
companies to the region for years to come.

he 2014 season of Parties in the Park may
have been shortened due to rainouts
but the resort like weather in June, July and
August brought out record-breaking crowds
to the streets of downtown Clayton.
Parties in the Park would not be possible
without the tremendous support of our
sponsors. We are extremely grateful to them and ask that you support their businesses throughout
the year.
Thank You to Our Sponsors!
