HISTORY
The modern Winchester Repeating Arms Co. can trace its roots back to the Volcanic Repeating
Arms Company, which produced the Volcanic rifles and pistols during the early part of the 1850's.
When this firm was failing, Oliver F. Winchester, as an investor, helped form the New Haven Arms
Company. They were to continue the manufacture of rifles using some of the ideas of the Volcanic
designs. The Volcanic rifles used .31 and .36 caliber self contained cartridges which lacked power.
In June 1858, the new company took over the former premises of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co.
with O.F. Winchester as the president and B. Tyler Henry as the shop supervisor. At first sales were no
better than with the prior designs and company. Then Mr. Henry redesigned the Volcanic action to
handle the larger caliber .44 rimfire cartridge. To honor Henry for his work, all Winchester rimfire
cartridges carry an "H" headstamp even today and the first products of the New Haven Arms Co. were
called the "Henry Rifles"
The New Haven Arms Company reorganized in 1865 and at that time changed their name to The
Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1866. they moved to Bridgeport, Conn., then moved back to
New Haven to its present location in 1871. The West was opening up and business was good for the
company Sales of rifles were increasing rapidly and the finances of the company were sound during a
period that saw the financial failures of many of the arms and ammunition companies due to their not
being able to adjust to the commercial markets following the Civil War.
Winchester produced their own cartridges, but considered their major business to be the sales of
rifles with the ammunition business being a side line to aid in the sales of arms. In 1873, they
introduced the model 1873 rifle, which was offered in center fire calibers. At the same time, they
became very active in producing ammunition. not only for their own guns, but for the guns of others.
Their 1871 catalog featured only their rifles, but by the 1873 catalog. they were offering "Metallic
Cartridges of all kinds".
The earliest cataloging of the various calibers and styles of Winchester cartridges was in their 1877
catalog, which listed 25 calibers of rim fire and 24 calibers of center fire loadings, which included

HISTORY
the .22 rim fires in both shorts and longs. This would make Winchester late in the production of .22
rimfires. Up until the 1890's, all rimfire cartridges were loaded only with black powder. Winchester
purchased their black powder from the Massachusetts Powder Works until 1868, then from the
American Powder Company. The copper for the drawing of cartridges cases was purchased from
Brown & Bros. of Waterbury, Conn.
On October 31, 1871 patent #120403 was issued to George R. Stetson of New Haven, Conn. and
assigned to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. This patent formed the basis of inserting the
bullet into the cartridge case, crimping the bullet in place and forming the lubrication grooves. The
early .22 boxes were marked with this "Stetson's Patent". The first of the production used a wrong
patent date, Oct. 24, 1871.
In 1890, Winchester announced their new model 1890 slide action rifle chambered for the .22
Winchester Rim Fire cartridge. This cartridge was developed as a hunting loading that had more
"killing power" than the .22 shorts and longs of the other gun companies.
The .22 long rifle cartridge was developed in joint experiment between the Stevens Rifle Company
and the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. in 1885. However, Winchester did not offer this cartridge until
1890.
The first .22's. to be loaded with smokeless powder were the shorts in 1895 and the longs in 1896.
After several years of experimentation with a new type of bullet for rim fire cartridges, the company
announced in 1902 their .22 short and .22 long smokeless cartridges loaded with greaseless bullets.
The first of a famous line which was very popular for many years due to the absence of grease or other
lubricating material on the bullet and the consequent cleanliness in handling. The greaseless bullets
were discontinued in 1929.
In June of 1904, Winchester introduced their Model 03 (auto loading) rifle chambered for the new
Winchester Automatic cartridge. This was the first strictly smokeless powder rim fire cartridge
developed by any cartridge producer. Up until that time all other rim fires were black powder
cartridges adapted to smokeless powders.
"Lesmok", which was a semi-smokeless powder developed by DuPont and was a combination of
smokeless and black powder, was introduced in 1911. The primer compounds of that period were
having problems producing uniform ignition of the smokeless powders with a resulting lack of
accuracy. The Lesmok powder solved this problem. Lesmok powders allowed the .22 rim fire to
become a very popular target cartridge and was the basis for the famous "Precision" competition
loadings of the 1920's and the 1930's.
About 1911. Winchester introduced their line of "Spotlight" loadings which produced a flash of
light upon impact with a metal target. This was a good cartridge for the shooting galleries of that time.
All black powder .22's, with the exception of blanks, were dropped from the product line in 1925. The
"Staynless" priming system was introduced for .22's in 1927. Dry bullet finishes were introduced in
1928 and were called "Kopperklad" due to the washing of the lead bullets with a copper metal transfer,
which was to prevent leading without any grease or other lubrication. High speed loadings were
introduced in 1932 and were known as "Super Speed". The Winchester Rim Fire Magnum cartridge
was introduced 1n1956.

"METALLIC CARTRIDGES"
Winchester first starting producing .22 rim fires about 1877. The first boxes were bulk packed and
had a raised "H" headstamp. The first bullets were of cast lead. Later, the swaged bullet was standard.
The following boxes are judged to be the first issues of Winchester. They would have been
produced from 1877 to the late 1880's, or the early 1890's. Even after the product line expansion of the
1890's, this style of a box was retained for the black powder gallery target issues. Note the incorrect
Stetson's patent date on the top label. It is not known when the impressed "H" replaced the raised "H",
but probably sometime in the early 1880's.

During the 1890's, Winchester offered a rapid expansion to their product line with loadings for B.B.
Caps, C.B. Caps, long rifles and W.R.F. cartridges. The boxes, for the most part were vertical stacked
with the cartridges having a point to base alternating packaging.
The product line lacked an overall format to the .22 box packages, with various designs used for
different loadings. The product line would not have a uniform format until the 1906 issue. The
following boxes are judged to have been produced during the era from about 1890 to 1906.

1918 SPECIAL GOVERNMENT CARTRIDGE Issues
A .22 caliber version of the .30 caliber rifle...
Gallery Practice Rifle, caliber .22, Model of 1903 "Hoffer-Thompson"
Rifle practice was important training for all soldiers. Weather and distance to ranges suitable for
use of .30-06 ammunition made practice nearly impossible for many units. However, most had access
to indoor ranges where .22 caliber rimfire rifles could be used. Besides aiming skills, an important goal
was to teach use of the stripper clip for reloading the rifle, and bolt manipulation. Therefore, the Army
desired a .22 caliber rifle that was as close to the Model 1903 service rifle as possible. Two Ordnance
officers, Jay Hoffer and John T. Thompson (best known for his later invention, the Thompson sub
machine gun, or "Tommy Gun") came up with a solution. Their version of the M1903 rifle used a .22
caliber barrel, and special steel adapters shaped like a .30-06 cartridge but holding a .22 caliber short
cartridge. This design worked well enough, but by 1922 it was decided that the "stripper clip" practice
was not necessary, and simpler .22 caliber training rifles were adopted. 15,525 were made circa 19071918, but most of the "Hoffer-Thompson" rifles were reworked with standard .30-06 barrels and
returned to service rifle use. Surviving examples are quite scarce.

1919 JUNIOR RIFLE CORPS Issues
This organization of school-age shooters was started in 1917 by Winchester as a promotional program, with
qualification courses through which participants advanced as their skills improved. It was very successful, but it overlapped
existing NRA youth programs, and when the association took over management of the corps in 1926 it combined the best
features of both. By this time more than 135,000 boys and girls had been qualified through it.

This is the first time that Winchester used a one-piece box with end flaps. Perhaps this issue was
first produced for the Winchester stores of that period. All are one-piece boxes with a image of a
Model 1890 rifle on a side with a red W INCHESTER and TRADE MARK under it. As this issue was
only produced for a couple of years, all specimens are hard to come by.
Side of all boxes except .22 Auto just has red W INCHESTER

In 1929, Winchester introduced a copper plating, or washing, of lead bullets. This aided in
preventing the fouling of bores without always needing other lubrications added to the bullets. They
used the sane packaging format as the 1927 STAYNLESS issues. The blue and white boxes was
dropped from the product line about 1938. The KOPPERKLAD name was continued until the 1950's.

KOPPER KLAD OVER-LABELS
Images and introduction from the Vol. 27 Number 1, .22 Box Newsletter. By Richard Rains.
Pictured here are the only known Staynless boxes with KOPPER KLAD over-labels. It is not
known if the labels were used for the first issues of KOPPER KLAD boxes, or if they were used when
there was a shortage of KOPPER KLAD boxes, or both reasons. It is difficult to determine based on
the date codes whether or not the over-labels were used on the first KOPPER KLAD boxes. The date
codes range from 1929 to 1933. It is not known if there are other boxes with these over-labels.

In 1932, Winchester introduced their high speed loadings which they named SUPER W SPEED.
This was a great move forward in allowing the .22 to become a more effective hunting cartridge. It

"SPOTLIGHT" Issues
In about 1911, Winchester introduced a line of cartridges that featured a bullet that was designed to
produce a flash or spot of light when the bullet impacted upon a metal backstop. This loading was
directed towards the amusement park style of shooting galleries. This spot of light on metal target
allowed the shooter to see where the bullet struck, thus adding excitement to the game.
Insert from a box of "SPOTLIGHTS"
The concept of impact illuminating bullets was not new. A Cecil W. Schou had patented a bullet
that contained a capsule of powder in its nose. Produced under patent No. 734,966, issued July 28,
1903, this loading seems to have been directed towards the military market. The Winchester
SPOTLIGHT issues were directed towards the commercial market. See the ".22 Box" Vol. 3, No. 2 for
more details on this issue.
WRA-30
WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co.
"SPOTLIGHT" Issues
The No. 1,088,026 patent on the left page was the basis for the Winchester loadings. T.C. Johnson
made the following claim in his patent application "- - -my invention relates to an improvement in
impact-illuminating bullets used for illuminating the area immediately surrounding the point of impact
- - --in which the application of flash-light composition to the bullet is practically superficial". The
flash-light powder referred to must have been a compound that was available on the open market as it
composition was not spelled out in the patent application. The patent was assigned to Winchester.
Johnson also obtained a patent for a process of applying flash powder to a standard profile bullet. but
this patent seems to have never been used on .22 rimfires. All SPOTLIGHTS noted have a hollow
point bullet with the flash powder inserted into the cavity.
The above patent No. 1,094,402 was issued to Eliot Kleen and was assigned to Winchester. While
the labels of the 1912 era SPOTLIGHT boxes refer to this patent, it may never have been used
on .22s. While it makes many of the same claims as the Johnson patent, it uses a flash-powder
composition that produces a crack or explosion upon impact. The patent states that this crack is
louder than the report of the gun. The standard SPOTLIGHT loading does not explode on impact.
The SPOTLIGHT issues were sold from about 1911 to the mid-1930s and the packaging was
changed as patents were issued and box styles changed. The listings on the following pages will
attempt to catalog the changes.

1906 STYLE LABEL with Pat. Appl'd For
While the patents are dated in 1914, Winchester started producing this loading during the patent
pending period, or perhaps even before then. Winchester changed top label formats in 1912. Boxes
have been noted that have the 1906 format, or style, to them. That means the production started in
1911 at the latest.

COMMERCIAL GALLERY Issues
The indoor gallery target shooting slowly evolved to amusement park shooting galleries where a
person could pay 25 cents and shoot 5 shots at a target with a slide action rifle in hopes of winning a
prize. Perhaps a teddy bear! The need for ammunition that was cheap and would not glance off the
metal back stops and hurt someone was met by Winchester with their "Spatterproof" .22 short
cartridges. These loadings also replaced the "Spotlight" issues.
STAYNLESS ISSUE
The first of the special gallery issues was a bulk packed box of .22 C.B caps sold with the
"Staynless" priming system. This box contains lead bullets, but with the lower power of the C.B. caps,
a composition bullet probably was not required. This was the first approach to meet the needs of the
amusement park galleries

1933 SPATTERPROOF ISSUE
In 1933 Winchester introduced a new composition bullet that would break up upon impact of a
metal back stop, instead of bouncing back like a lead bullet tended to do. This new loading was sold
under the trade name SPATTERPROOF.

" inder"Musket
The "Winder" musket was produced in both high and Low wall versions, with the Army
purchasing the low wall as a training rifle. Many of these rifles were sold thru the N.R.A. and provided
the indoor rifles clubs with an excellent gallery rifle. Named after a Col. Winder who was responsible
for many excellent small bore target programs.

INDOOR ARMORY Issues
The U.S. Army was looking for a low cost means of creating indoor target practice. The first
attempt was a reduced powder charge for the .30-06 cartridge in the issue 1903 Springfield rifles. The
second attempt was with the Thompson-Hoffer device. which allowed a .22 short type cartridge to be
used in rifles with reduced bore sizes.
The most successful attempt was created by the New York National Guard, who had Harry Pope,
the famous barrel maker create a 1898 Krag rifle with a .22 rim fire barrel. The rear of the bore was off
set to allow the center fire firing pin to hit the rim of the smaller cartridge. Only Harry Pope could
make this system work well.
1898 Krag Rifle
At that time Pope was working for the Stevens Rifle Company. Stevens offered this new system
for sale to anyone who desired to convert their Krag. Ammunition proved to be less than satisfactory
in meeting the accuracy requirements of the Pope barrels. Stevens, in what seems to have been a
special relationship with the Peters Cartridge Co. asked them to improve the .22 long rifle cartridge
along the lines being suggested by Pope. They created the Peters Stevens-Pope Armory loadings in
1905. The Union Metallic Cartridge Company responded with their Krag Armory loading in 1907.
Winchester responded to this increasing competitive situation with their U.S. Armory loadings, also in
1906. While the Peters entry was successful, the U.M.C. and Winchester loading did not obtain the
popularity desired. Both the U.M.C. and the Winchester boxes. are difficult to acquire and not found in
many collections.

The indoor Armory practice was the forerunner of the indoor or gallery shooting that is still enjoyed
today by so many N.R.A. rifle clubs. Winchester produced their high wall and low wall single shot
muskets, that were known as "Winder" muskets for this sport. After World War I the Winchester Model
52 became the major rifle used by competitors for indoor shooting sports.

in the U.S.A. that has .an insert so that cartridges can be packed "points down" which prevents damage.
Discontinued in 1937.
LR-7
.22 LONG RIFLE (TARGET). " PRECISION FIVE STAR" . Red, blue and white box with r ed,
white and blue printing. Over-Sized box with end flaps. Product. code K2218R on the ends. "H-10" h/s
on a copper case. Lead bullets. "B" bottom. Variations noted:
(a) Without range warning on the inside of the end flaps.
(b) With range warning on the inside of the end flaps.
STAYNLESS PRECISION ISSUE
In 1927 Winchester introduced their new non-corrosive priming system. While this was a major development,
the Precision match loadings retained the older corrosive priming mixture until 1933. The older system provided
a more uniform ignition with the required accuracy.
LR-8
.22 LONG RIFLE (TARGET). " INDOOR PRECISION" . Black, r ed and yellow box with r ed,
white and black printing. One-piece box with end flaps. Product code K2250R on the ends. "H-10" h/s

1936 Advertisement for EZXS
First introduced in 1935 to supplement the "Precision" line of competition grade small bore
loadings. The new loadings used brass cases which allowed for higher pressure which also allowed for
higher velocities. Many experiments created different loadings being offered to the public. The target
shooters liked some of the loadings and rejected others as not being accurate in the very demanding
outdoor prone shooting game.
All of the ammunition manufacturers produced high velocity match loadings during the middle
1930's. The goal was to reduce wind drift a 100 and 200 yard outdoor matches. While the idea was
good, it did not seem to work out well in practice. None of these loadings were well accepted by the
shooters. The Winchester Long Range EZXS loading is very difficult for the modern collector to locate
This catalog will attempt to display the development of the EZXS loadings as they were introduced
to the shooting public. The box style changed as well as the markings of the manufacturer.

"STAYNLESS" ISSUES
This issue used the Staynless non-corrosive priming system. This was a major improvement in being able to
protect the bore of the rifle, thus extending the useful life of the barrel. However the new priming did not
produce the needed accuracy. so this loading was dropped soon after introduction.

The war was over and target shooting again regained its popularity. New products were needed to satisfy their
demands. In 1946 Winchester introduced a smokeless powder issue for the EZXS loadings. The format was that
