JUSTIN BOOTS PLAYOFFS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS At the 2014 Justin Boots Championships, presented by Wrangler, Ryan Jarrett, below, tied the Omaha arena record for tie-down roping with a first-round time of 6.8 seconds; he broke that record with a 6.5-second run two nights later at the Wrangler Champions Challenge event, presented by Justin Boots. PRCA ProRodeo photo by W.T. Bruce What are the Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships? As the end of the ProRodeo season approaches each year, the stakes get higher; cowboys in the top 15 in the PRCA world standings want to be sure they stay on a smooth path to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, presented by Polaris RANGER, while cowboys on the bubble are ready to take some risks to try to jump into that select group before the countdown ends Sept. 30. One way many top cowboys work toward that goal is by trying to qualify for the Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships, presented by Wrangler, at season’s end. Although competing there is not required to get to the Wrangler NFR, the rodeos’ huge prize purses (a combined $480,000 in 2014) are a pretty good insurance policy, and that late-season boost can be very important. The 2014 Justin Boots Playoffs, in Puyallup, Wash., and the Justin Boots Championships, in Omaha, Neb., both presented by Wrangler, included several interesting highlights: • bulldogger Kyle Irwin won both rounds and the average at the Justin Boots Playoffs, presented by Wrangler, in Puyallup, Wash., to take home $8,842, which was a big factor in getting him into his first Wrangler NFR • top-ranked bareback rider Kaycee Feild was the only contestant to win the average at both the 2014 Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships, presented by Wrangler; he went on to win his fourth consecutive world title • Rhen Richard, competing in team roping and tie-down roping, was the all-around champion at both events • Ryan Jarrett tied the Omaha arena record for tie-down roping with a first-round time of 6.8 seconds; that win qualified him for the Wrangler Champions Challenge event in the same arena two nights later, when he broke that record with a 6.5-second run. QUALIFYING FOR THE JUSTIN BOOTS PLAYOFFS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS In 2014, cowboys qualified for early September’s Justin Boots Playoffs in Puyallup, Wash., by being among the top 48 contestants (48 headers, 48 heelers) in the regular-season Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings. The Playoffs started with one round of competition, with the top 12 competitors/teams advancing to the final round. The competitors with the best two-head score or time won the average, and were declared the champion. The top 24 contestants (24 headers, 24 heelers) in each event in the Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings the Friday after the conclusion of the Playoffs qualified for the Justin Boots Championships, held in late September in Omaha. The format of the competition was different from Puyallup; for the first time, the champions of the Justin Boots Championships were decided by a one-head score or time. In 2014, the number of entrants in both the Playoffs and Championships was double the traditional number, going from 24 to 48 in the Playoffs and from 12 to 24 in the Championships. It was especially important at the Championships, where those in the spots just outside the Top 15 in the world fought hard to get into the Wrangler NFR. In 2015, a format change means that the top 24 will compete in the first round in Omaha – 14 on Thursday, 10 on Friday. The top four from that first round will advance to a sudden-death round, also on Friday. In 2015, CBS Sports Net will telecast the updated-format Justin Boots Playoffs and Justin Boots Championships, presented by Wrangler, to about 56 million households on Dish Network’s channel 158, DirecTV’s channel 221 and other stations; check ProRodeo.com for an updated schedule. 444 WRANGLER TOUR Bareback riding *94 points – Wes Stevenson on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Cover Girl, second round, 2002 Steer wrestling 3.0 seconds – Trevor Knowles, second round, 2010 Team roping 3.5 seconds – Colter Todd/Cesar de la Cruz, semifinal round, 2008 Saddle bronc riding 91 points – Rod Warren on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Shingles, fourth round, 2002; Jesse Kruse on Powder River Rodeo’s Miss Congeniality, semifinal round, 2008 Tie-down roping 6.5 seconds – Blair Burk, final round, 2006 Barrel racing 11.62 seconds – Brittany Pozzi, final round, 2007 Bull riding 96 points – Mike Moore on Rafter G Rodeo’s Durango, semifinal round, 2001 * shares world record Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Champions From 2003-2011, the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour standings determined who participated in the Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships.
