Wrangler NFR - ProRodeo
WRANGLER NFR On his third trip to the Wrangler NFR, tie-down roper Adam Gray won the average through consistent performance – he never placed higher than third in a round, but he never took longer than 10.5 seconds to tie his calf and six of his times were under nine seconds. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Mike Copeman About the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is the season-ending championship event for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and is widely acknowledged to be the world’s premier rodeo. Held every December since 1985 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, the Wrangler NFR is ProRodeo’s richest and most prestigious rodeo, and it showcases the very best cowboys, barrel racers and livestock in the world. The top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (headers and heelers), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding – based on money won during the regular season, the Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships, and for many bull riders, the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour – qualify to compete at the Wrangler NFR. At the conclusion of the Wrangler NFR, the sport’s world champions are determined based on total season earnings – what they win during the Wrangler NFR added to what they won before the Wrangler NFR. The Wrangler NFR consists of 10 rounds on 10 consecutive days. Cowboys and barrel racers earn money by placing first through sixth in any round, and pick up more money by placing first through eighth in the average (cumulative times or points earned during the 10 rounds). At the end of each Wrangler NFR, there are two champions in each event (four for team roping): the average winner, who won the Wrangler NFR by having the best cumulative time or score in his or her event over the 10 rounds, and the world champion, who finished the year with the most money (including what he or she earned at the Wrangler NFR). For each event, the average winner and world champion may be the same person or different people. The 2012 Wrangler NFR was highlighted by a number of remarkable achievements and developments, including these: • Multi-event superstar Trevor Brazile extended his record number of world all-around championships to 10 and set a number of new records, including: most consecutive all-around world championships (seven), most Wrangler NFR all-around championships (seven), highest career earnings ($4,598,002) and highest National Finals (NFR/NFSR) career earnings ($1,505,697) • In addition to Brazile’s all-around win, three other cowboys defended their 2011 titles: bareback rider Kaycee Feild placed in eight rounds, winning three of them as well as capturing the Finals’ average title; steer wrestler Luke Branquinho became just the sixth cowboy to earn back-to-back titles in his event and the fourth to win four career gold buckles; and young phenom Tuf Cooper became only the 11th man to earn back-to-back tie-down roping world titles; Feild and Cooper are both sons of world champions who also successfully defended world titles – in the same events • Charitable causes continued to benefit from connections to Wrangler NFR-associated events: nearly 50 challenged children enjoyed participating in the 30th annual Exceptional Rodeo with Wrangler NFR personnel and contestants; after its annual luncheon, the ProRodeo League of Women donated another $100,000 to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, which also received NFR-related donations from the Bob Tallman Wrangler NFR Charity Bowling Tournament and the JCCF’s own silent auction at the PRCA’s annual Convention; and the World Famous Benny Binion Bucking Horse and Bull Sale did nearly $890,000 in sales and sent the net proceeds to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, in addition to funds the Hall raised at its annual golf tournament and Gold Buckle Gala. The 2012 Wrangler NFR had a record prize purse of $6.125 million, with an additional $1.75 million paid to participating stock contractors. A total of 175,642 people attended the live performances – the 26th consecutive year that all 10 performances have been sold out. The Wrangler NFR was rated No. 1 in the world as the highest-grossing ticketed event for venues with seating capacity of 14,000-30,000 in the February 2011 issue of Venues Today. Many more saw the 2012 Wrangler NFR on TV – all 10 rounds were telecast both live and in re-airs by Great American Country to more than 62 million U.S. households on Dish Network’s channel 165 and DirecTV’s channel 326. GAC will occasionally telecast highlights of the event through September 2013; see ProRodeo.com/Television for the schedule. Coverage for Canada was provided by Rogers SportsNet. 388 WRANGLER NFR RECORDS AND HISTORY Prize Money Attendance * record * record ‡moved to Thursday-Saturday format 1959$50,000 ......................... But Ram found a way in 2010 – identifying and rewarding the cowboy or cowgirl who earned the most money at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. How does this differ from the other titles awarded at or after the Wrangler NFR? Consider this: • The NFR average title in each event is awarded to the contestant who has the best combined score (in roughstock events) or time (in timed events) across the 10 rounds of the event; this is roughly equivalent to winning any other rodeo – except for the huge payouts and resulting waves of adrenaline through the venue • The world championship in each event is awarded after the Wrangler NFR to the contestant who earned the most money in that event at qualified rodeos across the PRCA’s year-long season, including what he or she won at the NFR (which is often the deciding factor) • The Ram Truck Top Gun Award goes to the one contestant who wins the most money in any single event at the Wrangler NFR; it’s the only title that pits contestants in multiple events against each other. While it might seem obvious that the contestant who won the most money at the entire Wrangler NFR must have won the average title in his or her event, and perhaps the world championship as well, that’s not always the case; see the list below. The winner of the Ram Truck Top Gun Award gets a 3500 Ram Heavy Duty Longhorn Laramie truck, a special Montana Silversmiths custom buckle and a Ram Truck Top Gun-branded gun from Commemorative Firearms. In 2012, a barrel racer won the Ram Truck Top Gun Award for the first time – at her first Wrangler NFR. Mary Walker and her husband, 1981 World Champion Steer Wrestler Byron, had gone back on the rodeo road so that she could re-enter competitive rodeo after the death of their only child, PRCA steer wrestler Reagon, in a car accident in April 2011. Just two months later, Walker’s horse, Perculatin “Latte,” fell on her during a barrel race, fracturing two of Walker’s vertebrae and crushing her pelvis. But Walker rehabbed with renewed inspiration, competed all season as though she had an angel on her shoulder, and entered the 2012 Wrangler NFR ranked third – and riding the 2012 PRCA/AQHA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year, Latte, also completely recovered. They won Rounds 1, 2, 3 and 7 and placed in three other rounds, taking the world title as well as the Ram Truck Top Gun Award at their first NFR. Starting in 2011, the Ram Truck Top Gun Award goes to the contestant who earns the most in a single event. Had that been true in 2010, bull rider J.W. Harris would have collected the Ram Truck Top Gun Award in addition to his bull riding gold buckle and average title, with $158,738. 394 WRANGLER NFR RECORDS AND HISTORY From 1959-63, roughstock event scores were based on a perfect score of 210 points (65-85 for the horse, 1-20 for the rider); under the current scoring system, 100 is a perfect score. * Record for highest score or fastest time (or for AA only, greatest earnings) All-AroundEarnings 1959 Jim Shoulders $3,478 1960 Don McLaughlin 3,172 1961 Benny Reynolds 2,610 1962 Harley May 2,326 1963 Sonny Worrell 1,562 1964 Jim Bob Altizer 2,341 1965 Ken Stanton 1,865 1966 Dean Oliver 2,252 1967 Larry Mahan 3,885 1968 Larry Mahan 2,462 1969 Larry Mahan 3,303 1970 Larry Mahan 2,887 1971 Bob Berger 4,019 1972 Phil Lyne 6,897 1973 Larry Mahan 6,575 1974 Tom Ferguson 3,038 1975 Sandy Kirby 4,955 1976 Tom Ferguson 9,005 1977 Tom Ferguson 10,749 1978 Tom Ferguson 20,000 1979 Tom Ferguson 10,535 1980 Lyle Sankey 20,000 1981 Jimmie Cooper 19,500 1982 Jimmie Cooper 29,268 1983 Roy Cooper 27,653 1984 Dee Pickett 30,677 1985 Tee Woolman 30,529 1986 Lewis Feild 46,620 1987 Lewis Feild 75,212 1988 Lewis Feild 64,724 1989 Ty Murray 58,031 1990 Ty Murray 72,818 1991 Ty Murray 101,242 1992 Ty Murray 86,268 1993 Ty Murray 124,821 1994 Ty Murray 33,259 1995 Tee Woolman 31,116 1996 Herbert Theriot 35,898 1997 Joe Beaver 83,228 1998 Herbert Theriot 107,899 1999 Cody Ohl 86,438 2000 Joe Beaver 123,356 2001 Jesse Bail 89,858 2002 Jesse Bail 65,609 2003 Trevor Brazile 79,539 2004 Trevor Brazile 55,774 2005 Ryan Jarrett 114,718 2006 Joe Beaver 127,914 2007 Trevor Brazile 139,614 2008 Trevor Brazile 149,098 2009 Josh Peek 113,802 2010 Trevor Brazile *211,509 2011 Trevor Brazile 106,250 2012 Trevor Brazile 82,841 Bareback Riding Pts.
