The Point
On Sunday, June 21, from 10 in the morning
until 9 at night, musicians of all ages and
musical persuasions will perform in over 400
public spaces throughout the five boroughs,
including playgrounds, piers, sidewalks,
gardens, closed-off streets, cemeteries, and
porches on Governors Island.
From established global artists to
teenage garage bands, music is played
by anyone who wants to take part —
and enjoyed by everyone who wants to listen.
Just like the city itself, the range of offerings is
spectacular. From Bach cantatas to bluegrass
jams, from Punk Island to gamelan orchestras,
from hip hop cyphers to brass band marathons,
there is something for every listener.
But don’t just listen — join the celebration and
make music yourself! Bring your instrument
to a Mass Appeal event, pick up the mic on
the Clavinova Piano Bar truck, improvise at
an Exquisite Corpse, or contribute to a Street
Studio track!
Use this program as your guide, check
makemusicny.org for late-breaking updates...
or just take to the streets and follow your ears!

Each Exquisite Corpse improvisation is transient, unrecorded, a
memento mori. But through the chain of players, overlapping and
succeeding each other, the music will go on and on.
All improvisers in all genres are welcome. Look for the
program to find an Exquisite Corpse near you.

invited to bring small stones with them to
help in performing. The first 30 minutes
will be for people to make noise and try out
ideas and for the second 30 minutes we’ll
all join together in sounding the score. For

Violins, led by Alicia Svigals. Svigals has
written a suite of tunes that will take
you on a tour of the basic klezmer forms:
horas, bulgars, freylekhs, and more. Playing
the piece will start you on the path to
an authentic Yiddish playing style – the
timbres and rhythmic feel, the modes and
dance beats, slides, trills and krekhzn that
make a violinist sound like a bona fide
klezmer. This event is part of KulturfestNYC,
the first-ever international festival of
Jewish performing arts, presented by
National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene at
MJH. To join, email dave@makemusicday.

Street Studios
From 11am - 2pm on June 21, twelve small mobile recording
studios will appear on sidewalks throughout NYC. These “Street
Studios,” coordinated by Make Music New York and Found
Sound Nation, will engage passersby and MMNY festival musicians in the spontaneous, collaborative production of original
music.
Each street studio will be run by a team of two DJ-engineers.
These producers will spend three hours (11am-2pm) recording, quick-mixing, looping, and playing back the live sounds,
while interacting with the public who stop by to sing, play an
instrument, or record sounds that become part of the musical
track. Then they will have roughly 6 hours to mix down one
five-minute track to present that evening at the “Street Studio
Smackdown” party at the DUMBO Loft in Brooklyn (155 Water
St, 8pm - 12am). Everyone who records material throughout the
city in the morning will be invited to this free evening event.
