DIRECTOR REPORTS
BAC Club President and
Representative Meeting
The Englander – San Leandro
January 14, 2013
The meeting was called to order
by President Dennis Heffley at
7:30 pm at The Englander in
San Leandro CA.

Secretary
President’s Report: Dennis Heffley – Dennis
started off by reminding us that tonight is a night
to celebrate the first part of a New Year. And to
help us start off the year, we have 3 guest speakers - Doug Pringle, the President of Disabled
Sports USA Far West, Jennifer Van Gilder, Vail
Resorts Regional Sales Director and Warren
Martineau of Forest Suites in South Shore Lake
Tahoe. Dennis announced that he recently represented BAC on a Park City Familiarization
(Fam) Trip. Dennis noted that Park City is excited to be having us return this year for our BAC
Utah Ski Trip. Dennis then introduced three people who are new to our organization- Tracy Frizzar, Dina Jennings, and Sonia Brown, who are all
members of the Black Avalanche Ski Club. DenFebruary, 2013

We all hope that Black Avalanche will join BAC!
Stephen Lang of the Park City Chamber of Commerce who hosted the Fam trip asked if the participants would be willing to participate in a TV
commercial, so Tracy, Dina and Dennis all participated. This past Tuesday, Dennis also skied a
few runs with the Monterey Ski and Social Club.
He ran into a number of people from several of
the Bay Area Clubs at Heavenly. Dennis also
stayed at the Forest Suites!
Secretary: Cathy Wilson – Karen Davis made a
motion to approve the December minutes; Dave
Meinhardt seconded the motion and the minutes
were unanimously approved.
Nominations Open ~ President of Bay Area
Snow Sports Council – Dennis Heffley – Dennis
noted that, as part of his/her duties, the President
of BAC gets to represent the organization on
many levels and has an opportunity to learn from
a host of knowledgeable individuals. That person
also gets to work with a great Board of Directors.
If you are elected, you would attend quarterly
meetings with the Far West Ski Association

Board and attend an annual meeting of the National Ski Council Federation. You would get to
work with a number of wonderful industry representatives and heads of various organizations.
Dennis then opened the nomination process for
President of BAC. Dennis had been previously
nominated. Three calls for nominations were
made, but no further nominations were forthcoming. Harry Davis then moved that the nominations be closed and Al Hurley seconded. Karen
Davis made a motion to elect Dennis by Right of
Acclamation; Barbara Erickson seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Dennis thanked
everyone and stated that it is an honor to be reelected. However, he also announced that this
will be his 10th and final year as he would like to
be able to move on to other positions at the National Level.
Guest Speaker: Disabled Sports USA Far
West - Doug Pringle ~ President – Doug started
by touching on a few points of his personal story.
He lost his leg in Vietnam and was taught to ski
by several World War II vets. He was so inspired
by the experience that he has gone on to make
working with disabled sports his life’s work. Doug
noted that Dennis and BAC have been long time
supporters of DSUSA Far West through events
such as the A’s game, the Ski for All, the Ability
Challenge and more. Last year several ski clubs,
such as Inskiers, Rusty Bindings, and Castro Valley participated in the Ability Challenge. Doug
provided a flyer on this year’s challenge and
asked all to participate. He encouraged all to
raise pledges and personally promote the event
to their friends and family. Email is an easy way
to ask and is often successful. The Challenge

out.
Guest Speaker: VAIL Resorts Regional Sales Director (Heavenly, Kirkwood & Northstar), Jennifer Van
Gilder – This year there is quite a bit of snow up in
Tahoe. Jennifer asked how many people have used
the Epic Mix and Passes, which scan right through a
jacket. Many have purchased them. Epic Mix also
scans your vertical feet and pictures. For $8 at Heavenly and Northstar you can use the pass to also
“race” against Lindsey Vonn on a special race course.
At the end of the year, prizes will be given to the fastest racers. You can also earn pins and medals. It’s a
great way to have competitions between members of
your club. At Heavenly, a new burger bar has been
installed. You can make hundreds of combinations.
At Kirkwood, cat skiing is being expanded. Avalanche
awareness classes are also being offered. Shuttles
are being run from South Shore to both Kirkwood and
Northstar (check the schedule for days offered). If
clubs are looking to come up for even a small trip,
please contact Jennifer. Clubs already taking advantage of this offer were Monterey, Top of the Hill and
Rusty Bindings! Vail Resorts has also set up special
deals for rentals through rentskis.com. Jennifer also
donated several items for the meeting raffle. Thank
you Jennifer and Vail!
Guest Speaker: Forest Suites in South Shore Lake
Tahoe, Warren Martineau – Warren made an offer to
Doug Pringle to help get his organization to South
Shore for some events. Thank you Warren, for supporting DSUSA Far West! Forest Suites is positioned
very close to the Heavenly Gondola in South Lake
Tahoe, within easy walking distance (54 steps!).

Public Affairs: Linda Indreboe - 2013 FWSA Convention – The 2013 FWSA Convention will be held at the
Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno - June 6-9th.
Registration packages will be released soon. Rooms and
RV parking will both be offered. The convention officially
starts Thursday night with a pub crawl. On Friday, various
activities will be offered such as a Golf Tournament; River
Rafting Trip on the Truckee; River Walk; Tahoe Area Hike;
Grand Sierra Spa Day; Bowling, Mini-Golf & Pai-Gow and
more. The Silent Auction will be held as usual on Friday
night. Great deals can be obtained at the auction. BAC will
also be hosting a party Friday night starting around
10:30PM! All BAC attendees are invited. On Saturday,
there will be a travel expo, leadership seminars, guest
speakers and the Saturday night awards banquet. Darren
Rahlves, former Olympian, will be the keynote speaker.
Darren sponsors the Banzai Tour of extreme skiing. On
Sunday, following the Sunday “eye opener”, the convention
will end with the annual business meeting. Dennis encouraged all to submit entries for awards. Awards are a great
way to get your club to participate in the convention. Also,
we need volunteers. We need you to go back to your clubs
and encourage your members to get involved. Also, encourage your members to attend. The more people we
have the more fun the activities will be, the more we will
raise at the auction and the more value your club will get
from the various leadership seminars and sessions. If your
club has a cabin, you can also use this to encourage people to attend the auction, even if they can’t make the entire
convention.
FWSA is offering a Club Incentive Program this year.
Post convention, FWSA will rebate to the club, every 6th
early bird full voting delegate registration fee. In the next
day or two an email will come out and a qualified member
from your club will be invited to go to Grand Sierra, to become familiar with the property and then be qualified to talk
with your club about it.
The next convention meeting will be held on January
17th at the Englander. We need your club participation.
Please plan on having a representative attend.
Treasury: Paul Vlasveld reported that we are doing well
with our treasury and once the directory income and expenses are finalized, we should be slightly ahead from a
breakeven point this year. If you want a detailed report,
please contact Paul directly. We operate BAC as a break
even operation and any extra we raise goes to our charitawww.skibac.org

Racing: Paul reported that the snow was fantastic at Alpine Meadows and the races went off well. The races at
Squaw this past weekend were a little chilly, but the snow
was also great. In two weekends, the races will be at
Northstar and snow is still expected to be great.
