The municipality is very involved in the social and cultural activities, including scientific. Setting the scene: Vantaan Energia Ltd. is building a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Hakunila region in Vantaa. HSY is campaining for better recycling of inflammable materials in the area. Vantaa regional services is activating citizens using participatory methods and service design. Heureka brings science and technology of waste treatment to everyday life, making it easier to understand how important it is to burn waste and recycle more. The area includes a park (the 4th biggest in town), representing a great opportunity for reconsidering the use of public spaces in Trento, on the premise that they represent one of the main places where to foster citizens cultural welfare. The city draws upon a long and rich tradition of creative thoughts, a spirit of scientific inquiry and entrepreneurial innovation (Vienna looks to the future, 2007). Nevertheless, research of city departments and science communication institutions often seem to be invisible to citizens. Its River crosses distinct geographical units and connects the city to the sea through a coastal lagoon, classified as a natural park. Being an important touristic destination, multiple conflicting uses are expected, when considering urban development, tourism and nature conservation. This project aims at increasing awareness and promoting citizens’ involvement in public discussions on the best practices and strategies to follow towards a sustainable local development and River use.
