In the days when the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, the High Priest wou

These three spheres, self, family and community are still the focus of the Jew

world through the framework of these three spheres.
The Self: Do we have clarified goals for our lives? What have we do
during the past year to get closer to those aspirations? Part of being happy a

thing, without it you have nothing” holds a powerful truth. The High Holy Days are also a time

vessel of the body to get the work of our spirits accomplished.
The Family: When we create children, we bequeath a great part of ourselves to the next gener

children so much so, that often the traits of the grandparent are still obvious in the grandchild. O
children are our greatest investment and should also be our greatest joy. This is a time of year
enjoy the blessing of family and to work towards making our families even more blessed. We mu
search for ways to strengthen our families, for what in our lives has comparable worth?
The People: Being Jewish is a blessing. We are both the recipients of Torah and participants
a great nation with 3700 years of history. As such, we are obligated to learn Torah and to transm

PRESIDENT’S ARTICLE
Welcome back from summer vacation. I hope that everyone had the opportunity
to take some time to relax and have some fun. September and October usher in
the Jewish holidays, and the Temple Hillel staff is working hard to ensure that we
will all be ready when the shofar blows. Our volunteers make certain that everyone
gets their proper seats in the sanctuary and that you and your family receive the
appropriate aliyot and honors, amongst the many other things that need to get
done. I want to thank everyone for their efforts on the congregation’s behalf.
We have rules to follow over the High Holidays so that all of our congregants, visitors, and guests can feel safe and secure in our building. Remember to bring your
tickets with you and be prepared to show them to the security staff upon entering the building. Please be
prepared to listen to the ushers and the people on the bimah for any and all instructions. Carriages and
strollers will not be allowed past the first floor and cannot, under any circumstances, be allowed in the
sanctuary or on the second floor. The parking lot will be CLOSED over the holidays, I am sorry for any
nconvenience this may cause.
During the month of September, you will receive a phone call from your fellow congregants to ask for
you donation for our annual Kol Nidre Appeal. I know I can count on all of you to treat these members
with respect, as they ask for your help. Dues are not enough to assist us in carrying on with the excellen
programming and activities we enjoy at Temple Hillel. Our building is almost 60 years old, and we must
spend the money for its upkeep and maintenance. This summer, we were required by Nassau County to
nstall a grease trap and we are continuing with the installation of our new fire alarm system. Both of
these projects are extremely expensive, and we look to you, our membership for the extra help you can
give to us, as our membership declines, due to demographic changes. So please give whatever it is that
you can ,we appreciate all of your help.
Our annual Simchat Torah honorees will be Victor Spetalnick, who is our Chatan Torah, Leonard
Tannenbaum, who is our Chatan Bereshit and Dr. Lawrence Cohen, who is our Chatan Maftir. Our

look forward to greeting everyone in the congregation as we gather in the sanctuary to welcome in the
New Year. David, Nicole, Scott and I wish all of you L’Shana Tova Tikatevu. May you all be inscribed and
sealed in the Book of Life for a sweet, happy and healthy year.
Shalom,
Robin

Tashlikh - A remarkable ceremony - symbolic
and concrete all at the same time. Through this ritual, we express not only our desire to be free from
sin but our continuing hope that we will be forgiven
for past misdeeds. On the afternoon of the first day
of Rosh
Hashanah - it is customary to go to a
flowing body of water and to recite prayers while
“casting” our sins (represented by bread crumbs)
into the water. As we read in Micah: “You will cast

Yom Kippur itself is marked by physical abstinence. This is regarded ambivalently. Some say
that the abstinence is for the sake of physical
mortification and purgation; others say that on
Yom Kippur man is so close to God he can forget about his body (or vice versa through forgetting the body, man can concentrate on the spiritual all the more intensely and gloriously.)

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL SCOOP
Dear Students and Parents:
Welcome back to school. I hope that you had an enjoyable summer. We have been busy at work, preparng for this next school year. As you are aware, there will be school on only one Sunday each month, in

once per month. All students are expected to attend. We are happy to continue sharing Family Friday

attend.

MAZEL TOV TO OUR B’NAI MITZVAH
BEN PERETZ
Ben is an 8th grade high honor roll student at Woodmere Middle
School, and is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on October 27th. Ben
loves to be active, and enjoys basketball, swimming and pingpong. He is also interested in music, and plays trumpet, piano, and
guitar-hero. But Ben spends most of his time on the soccer field, as
a member of the NY Cosmos '99 Academy team, currently ranked
first in the nation for 13-year-old boys.
Ben's parents, Tracey and Rami Peretz, and 16-year-old sister Shira, are incredibly proud
of Ben as he reaches this important milestone. Ben's grandparents, Joan and Henry Ston
of Oceanside, Alice and Albert Mizrahi of Fort Lauderdale, and Dani and Albert Peretz o
Israel, are all thrilled to celebrate Ben's Bar Mitzvah with him and his family.
“Calling all Brandeis Students”
We would appreciate all parents of children attending the Brandeis School to let
us know who your children are so that
we may include them in issuing new Bar/
Bat Mitzvah dates or invite them to join
us at Temple Hillel for any other event.
We don’t know who your children are
unless you let us know! Call the Temple
Office at 791-6344 or email [email protected].

Sisterhood
As the summer came to a close, we started thinking of all of our activities over the past year and are
oking forward to what we have planned for the new year ahead.
We started off the year with Irene Perl and her night of "Fun with Phyllo. We learned a lot about Phyllo
dough and enjoyed tasting the many items Irene prepared. We thank Irene for starting us off this year wi
"Cooking for the Holidays". The food she prepared was delicious. She made it seem so easy that I'm
sure many of us added these dishes to our own holiday table.
We would like to thank everyone again for making last year's fashion show such a success.. This year th
fashion show will take place on October 24th. Come join us to see the latest fashions from Joy of How
ard Beach, enjoy a wonderful dinner catered by Temple Hillel caterers and win fabulous prizes.
Last year's trip was to the Spanish-Portuguese synagogue. On Monday, November 5th we will be going
to the Holocaust Memorial in Glen Cove. We have booked a docent tour and we will be going for lunch
after the tour. Men are welcome to join us.
Since we had such a good time last year at our "Sing a Long," with Ruth Shuster , we have scheduled a
repeat performance for November 28th.
Last June we transformed the lower ballroom into a night club and held our first Cabaret Night. It was a
huge success and we are planning to have another one in June.
Throughout the year we had wonderful Shabbos and evening book reviews led by Renee Trachtenberg
and Barbara Spetalnick. These book reviews will be continued on Shabbos afternoons after services.
Our Hebrew Ulpan led by Malka Hirsch will be starting again after the Holidays. A separate e-mail will be
sent to you so that you will be able to sign up.
Israeli dancing , taught by Roberta Greene, continues throughout the year.
We are planning to continue our annual Senior Luncheon and our very successful bingo evening as well
atch for e-mails and flyers for more specifics on the above events and for more upcoming events not listed
re. We wish all of our membership a very Happy Healthy New Year and Chag Sameach to all.

SUCCOTH
THE HAKAFOT
Succoth is known as the Festival of Booths. The Torah commands us to
ive in booths for seven days as a way of remembering our ancestors who
ived in huts during forty years they wandered in the deserts after their
deliverance from Egyptian slavery. The succah, because of its frail construction and exposure reminds us of God’s constant care and protection.
All the Torah scrolls are taken out on Hakafot. The Hazan
“Great and mighty, help us! Kind and merciful, help us!” Everyon
behind the Hazan, repeating the chant. Children march waving flags
one kisses the scrolls as the pass by. Upon reaching the starting p
front of the Ark, everyone sings and dances. This is repeated until e
has had a chance to carry a scroll.
The Succoth Festival concludes with Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah,
the Day of Rejoicing over the Law.
Another Torah ceremony takes place during the morning service
ing the last chapter of the Torah and then the first chapter.
LULAV & ESROG
The ceremony of the Esrog (citron) and the Lulav (palm branch), the
Hadaisim (myrtle leaves) and the Aravot (willows of the brooks) bound SIMCHAT TORAH
together with the Lulav, each distinctively different in beauty and fragrance
symbolizes the cooperation and unity of all classes of society.

the holidays, and on Mondays and Thursdays since ancient times.
SHEMINI ATZERT
Shemini Atzeret is in the nature of a separate festival. A more serious
mood prevails in the synagogue due mainly to the memorial service before
Musaf. The morning service includes an important prayer for rain called
Geshem (Rain). According to one tradition, it is on this day that the amount
of rain that will fall on the world for the coming year is determined. Jews all
over the world pray for rain in Israel at this time.
SUKKOT IS COMING - October 1, 2012
ORDER YOUR LULAV AND ESROG
The lulav and esrog are lovely symbols of the holiday and it would be a major reminder of Sukkot if every family acquired these articles and used them
home during the days of Sukkot, and brought them to the Synagogue to participate together with their children in the Lulav pr ecession.
Orders are now being accepted for Esrog and Lulav. The cost is $45. Just fill out and return the form printed below to the Te mple office, or contact
Larry Cohen at 791-3108, or email to [email protected], or call Joe Perl at 791-3815.
The deadline for orders is September 21, 2012
