This program is a wonderful
opportunity for children ages 6-12 to
experience (and share with adults) such
diverse programs as environmental
education, outdoor recreation, natural
resources, conservation and historical
interpretation. The program is offered
each calendar year and encourages
children to attend programs offered
by local environmental groups such as
City of Davenport Parks and Recreation,
University of Illinois Extension-Master
Naturalists, Iowa State Extension, county
conservation boards, and others.

Children must attend three
school, after school, or other
environmental programs such as a wildflower hike, night hike, fishing contest,
campground program, or hunter education. They must also complete two
independent activities (for a 30-minute minimum) such as reading a nature book,
fishing, camping, bike riding along a nature trail, hiking or bird watching.
This program is sponsored by the City of Davenport and University of
Illinois Extension - Master Naturalists. The Junior Naturalist program is
courtesy of and modeled after the Iowa Association of Naturalists’ Iowa Junior
Naturalist Program.
Rock Island County Soil and
Water Conservation District
Natural Area Guardians
The RICO SWCD Natural Area Guardians, formed under the Rock Island County Soil
and Water Conservation District is a group of pro-active volunteers whose goal is to
assist in management of natural areas of regional or local significance. Dedicated
stewards will assist natural areas managers and landowners in restoration projects.
Goals of the group are to: locate and inventory natural areas of local significance;
manage or restore natural areas both public and private; and provide education
programs concerning natural areas and to promote public awareness of natural
areas and their preservation.

may be involved in are invasive
species control, prescribed fire crew,
native plant sales, prairie and forest
restorations, and native seed collection.

regional and national activism projects.

Our members have been active
with many local organizations
including Living Lands & Waters,
Xstream Cleanup and Keep Scott County
Beautiful. The club sponsors a Green
Campus program at Scott Community
College (including recycling and energy
conservation and shortly, a composting
program) and is active in habitat
restoration on campus (including prairie
restoration, forest restoration and
ornithological restoration/feeding).
We meet at 3:00 p.m. for about
an hour on Wednesdays in
