NAHANT HARBOR REVIEW • AUGUST 2005 • Page 1 Nahant Harbor Review A monthly publication, in service since March 1994, dedicated to strengthening the spirit of community by serving the interests of civic, religious and business organizations of Nahant, Massachusetts, USA. Donna Lee Hanlon, Editor • PO Box 88 • Nahant, MA 01908 • [email protected] Volume 12 Issue 8 AUGUST 2005 Townwide Celebration September 24 To Rededicate Bailey’s Hill Gazebo A townwide celebration to mark the dedication of the restored Bailey’s Hill Gazebo is scheduled for Saturday, September 24th, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in Bailey’s Hill Park. The free celebration, sponsored by the Town of Nahant and the Nahant Woman’s Club, will include music, food, period costumes, and many exciting activities, including a children’s art exhibit and contest. Rain date is Sunday, September 25th. This dedication is actually a rededication. In 1976, the Nahant Woman’s Club secured a grant to construct the original Gazebo. The original Bailey’s Hill Gazebo was dedicated in 1976, the nation’s bicentennial year. 1976 also marked the first visit of the Tall Ships off the shores of Nahant. Over the years, the Gazebo has become a true Nahant landmark and has been used for band concerts, picnics, children’s activities, community events, wedding ceremonies, and as a gathering place for town people who enjoy the park. After almost 30 years, the gazebo is in poor condition and poses safety concerns. Three years ago, the Nahant Woman’s Club initiated numerous fundraising projects, including the 2003 kitchen tour, to assist in the rebuilding of the Gazebo. Funds raised total $8,000. A check for the final installment of $4,500 was presented to the Town of Nahant by Past President Calantha Sears, current President Marrit Hastings, and Treasurer Polly Bradley. Town Administrator Mark Cullinan accepted the check, with thanks, on behalf of the Town. This gift was in addition to the $3,500 donated earlier. A $10,000 Community Preservation Grant was approved in the 2005 Town Meeting to pay for the renovation work. Architect John Falat created the improved design for the Gazebo, and work was begun in late July, by the firm selected by the Town, JP Construction. The cost of the renovations totals $18,000. The art exhibit and contest, for all Nahant children under 12, will be one of the highlights of the rededication. Its theme is: “Things I like to do best in Nahant.” Entries must be brought to Bailey’s Hill by 8:00 a.m., on the day of the event. The Nahant Woman’s Club will also be celebrating the 110th anniversary of its founding. The Nahant Woman’s Club presents a check for $4,500 to the Town of Nahant for reconstruction of the Bailey’s Hill Gazebo. Left to right: Calantha Sears, outgoing president of the Woman’s Club; Marrit Hastings, incoming president; Mark Cullinan, Nahant Town Administrator, who accepted on behalf of the Town; and Polly Bradley, treasurer. This check is in addition to the $3,500 donated earlier by the Woman’s Club, making a total of $8,000. A $10,000 Community Preservation Grant approved at the 2005 Town Meeting will complete the payment for the renovation work. Alexandra Moccia wins 1st Place in National Competition written by her proud father, Joe Moccia On June 18th, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Alexandra won first place at the USA World Showcase talent competition, for singing in the children’s division. The competition was televised on PAX TV on July 25th, at 12:30 p.m. You will be able to view the show online at www.usaworldshowcase.com, and vote, by August 6th, for your favorite performer to win the grand prize. The Nahant Country Club Welcomes All by Dan deStefano The Nahant Public Library will close its Summer Reading Program with a presention of Parents’ Choice Award winners, Davis Bates and Roger Tincknell, in a participatory program of stories and songs for all ages. “The Places You’ll Go: Exploring Reading in Story and Song,” will involve the audience in a variety of cultural traditions. The stories told include international folk tales, just-so stories and stories from Davis’s own family. The songs are accompanied by the Aztec rainstick, Inca flute, Russian balalaika, African drum, guitar, mandolin and banjo. The artists include plenty of sing-along, dancing, and movement. Bates and Tincknell combine more than six decades of experience performing for families throughout the Northeast. They are known for their strong vocal harmonies, humor, and warm, participatory performing style. Pete Seeger has praised Bates as “thoughtful, creative, human and a fantastic storyteller.” His traditional style of telling stories is a refreshing change from passive television and video. Tincknell is am accomplished musician, singer, and songwriter, a master of the guitar, banjo, mandolin, bazouki and harmonica. “The Places You’ll Go” will take place at the Nahant Public Library at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, August 17th, 2005. The Library will open at 1:30, in order to accommodate the audience. For more information, call 781-5810306. Be sure not to miss this wonderful, family-oriented, entertaining event! How much do you know about the Nahant Country Club? Why should you join? Find out at the club’s champagne reception for prospective members September 16th, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at—where else?—the Nahant Country Club, 280 Nahant Road. In addition to tennis and platform tennis, the club is planning a full schedule of members-only social events this fall, winter and spring. There will be several Don’t Cook Fridays, the very popular Friday night suppers held in the club’s pub. The club will also host a Super Bowl party complete with wide-screen TV, a kids’ Christmas party and a kids’ Easter egg hunt. In addition, club members will receive a discount to the Visions of Nahant art show and wine-tasting and to Blues Night, the coolest night of the year. The whole idea is to make the club once again the social center of Nahant, a place to relax with old friends and make new ones. Anyone can join the Nahant Country Club. A social membership is only $50 per family. Tennis and platform tennis memberships are equally reasonable. Learn more about the club and become a member at the champagne reception. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. If you’re looking for a way to meet your neighbors, or if you used to be a member, but no longer are, this is your chance to learn all about the new, reinvigorated Nahant Country Club. Reservations are required; call Kellie Frary at 581-1453 to make them. Thank You Like many who viewed the Nahant Historical Society’s exhibit of paintings, featuring our shoreline, I purchased the catalog. Besides the excellent photographs of the art work, I was especially pleased to read again the eloquent and moving introduction, “Nahant’s Rhythmic Flavors” by Daniel deStefano; it appears in the book, as it does in the show, at the beginning. This sets the tone for a walk through a century-and-ahalf’s artistic expressions. The words match the mood so well, you may do as Dan suggests, when you finish the book, walk on the beach. The cliche “If you liked the movie—you’ll love the book,” comes to mind. If you enjoyed the exhibit, you’ll love the catalog. Thanks to everyone who assisted in this special cultural happening. —Maureen Lynch Edison, Nahant, MA Coffee House Continues at Community Center 271 Nahant Road Nahant, MA 01908 by Carol Hanson For information and / or admission, call: 781-581-0420 • fax: 781-596-0878 It’s the time of year to start planning your entry into this year’s exciting Soap Box Derby race, to be held on Sunday, Sept. 18th, on Little Nahant Road, starting at 10:30 a.m. Organizers are looking for a large group of entrants this year—the word is that a new crop of eight-yearolds can’t wait to race! However, we want you all to know that this exhibit is a celebration, not only of the Society’s 30th Anniversary, but also of Nahant, itself. It would not been possible without you. Roberta Payne-Strange, of Nahant, will perform in the play. Bertie is the daughter of Nicholas Strange and Wendy Payne, a Nahant Woman’s Club board member. Bertie, and one other child, will join a troupe of Shakespearian actors to play jointly the role of Chorus. Both children have a few lines, enjoy much stage time and help with narration. The performance is outdoors and attendees may bring lawn chairs, if desired. Admission is free. In September, Bertie Payne-Strange will be performing in “The Boston Miesner Slams” (the youngest performer ever accepted into the ensemble). In January and February 2006, Bertie will be playing MaryAnnie in, “They Named Us Mary,” at The Boston Playwright’s Theatre. Currently, Bertie is filming her first feature film, “Public Enemy Number One,” slated to be released early 2006. The group Pastimes brings cherished literature and historical periods to life, through its presentations, including traditional theatre, interactive theatre (which immerses the audience in the environment portrayed) and festivals, such as Robin Hood Faire. Pastimes says, “By a special grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Pastimes presents the classic tale of boundless love amid ancient hatreds, Romeo and Juliet. Experience romance, intrigue, swordplay, raucous comedy, and of course, heartbreaking tragedy.” For more information about the Revere performance of Romeo and Juliet, email Wendy Payne at [email protected]. The Tournament is held under the auspices of the Country Club Tennis Committee. It is for boys and girls ages 10 and under, 12 and under, and 14 and under, in the categories of singles and doubles. Mixed doubles were held for 12 and under and 14 and under players. The tournament directors are Dunbar and Mary Livingston. The tournament was kept on schedule by starting players at 8:00 a.m. and allowing for a one hour, mid-day break. Fortunately, the weather was warm and great for tennis. Very nice trophies from Glass Dimensions in Essex, inscribed with the Nahant 150th Anniversary Logo, went to the winners and finalists. The trophies were also inscribed with the legend “Birthplace of American Tennis”, honoring Nahant for that distinction This year is the sixth year of the tournament and it is more successful than ever. The tournament was held over three full days and attracted 70 players, the largest group of players we have ever had, representing a substantial increase over the 52 players, who entered last year. The 70 players accounted for 139 entries in 14 separate events. Players were from the following clubs: the Nahant Country Club, the Cary Street Club, the Eastern Yacht Club, the Corinthian Yacht Club, The Beach Club, Bass River Tennis Club, Northeast Tennis Club, North Shore Tennis Club and the Essex County Club. Nahant Country Club junior players were also hosted at the Eastern Yacht Club, to participate in challenge matches against the Eastern, on Friday, July 1st, after the tournament. This is the first time Nahant has been invited and we would like to make it an annual event. We are grateful for the support of Country Club tennis players for their help during the tournament. Special thanks goes to Michael Flynn, Tennis Committee Chair, for all his help and support during the tournament. Thanks also to John Falat and Bobby Kelly, of the Country Club Tennis Committee, for help with setting up and taking down the tent. Also thanks to Dave Marshall of the Tennis Committee for help in monitoring the courts for the younger players. Parents of some of the players very generously donated some treats. You may not even feel thirsty. Water intake is a year-round concern. We all know the general 8 glasses of 8-ounces-aday. Few of us actually drink enough water, anyway, so when it is hot and we are exercising we need to be even more aware of water and fluid intake. Endurance and performance depend on proper hydration before, during and after summer exercise, activities and sports. During the day, don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. Many experts aggree that you are already slightly dehydrated when thirst is signalled. Drink on a schedule: Add a glass of water every morning, & SWAMPSCOTT ADULTS Ballet, Modern Jazz, Tap, Stretch & Tone, Ask about Pilates [email protected] drink one before each meal and one before bed. Find other ways to include water regularly. To prepare for activities and prevent dyhydration, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends at least 16 ounces of fluids, 2 hours before and again, 15-20 minutes before exercising. During exercise, you should drink more water every 15-20 minutes. Your body sweats to cool down. Even if you don’t see the sweat dripping, don’t be fooled, it often evaporates quickly in the heat. As you sweat you loose fluids and minerals, like salt and potassium. To replace fluids, water is still best and fastest. So after exerting yourself in exercise, sports, or just play, drink water first, then have a sports drink, or juice, 15-20 minutes later. You may occassionally need to replace salt and pottassium lost in sweating, especially if you’re exerting longer than an hour. Sports drinks will help to replenish these, or you may consume foods high in sodium. Our diets often contain enough sodium, so this is not usually a major concern. Carbohydrates are needed to refuel your muscles, but unless you exercise intensely or more than once a day, these are sufficiently maintained by eating a balanced diet. Your body will replenish itself with your next meal or snack. Protein is an important building block, too. Most experts recommend eating carbohydrates and proteins in a 4:1 ratio, 4 servings of carbohydrates, such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains, to 1 of protein such as meat, fish, poultry and legumes. A well balanced diet and sufficiently hydrated body will perform well, even in the summer. Do not overexert in the sun, as your body needs to cool down by circulating blood to the surface. Increased demand by muscles can cause overheating, dehydration, headache, nausea and heat exhaustion. Be sure to hydrate. Remember caffeine and alcohol dehydrate you even more. Drink plenty of water and enjoy the summer fun in the sun. Caitlin, along with her 4th Grade teachers and classmates at the Johnson School, inspired the entire school community to raise nearly $2,000 to support children living in orphanages in China. The school, in conjunction with Our Chinese Daughters Foundation’s Orphanage Support Project (www.OCDF.org), will enable Fang Jun to attend a local public school outside the orphanage for the next two years and will provide him with books, a school uniform, winter clothing, school supplies, personal care items, an eye exam, and music lessons. Fang Jun is studying English and will write back and forth to the Johnson School students. Although schooling is provided within the orphanage, integrating with the outside community will allow Fang Jun to have play dates, join clubs and sports, and develop lifelong friendships and connections. These will all give him a chance at a better future. Additional funds have been directed to the medical supply needs of a foster home near Beijing, which services 80 children in need of special surgeries. Detailing a boat is the single most important investment of time, energy and money a seller can make, because a clean and shiny boat sells faster and for a lot more money. I strongly recommended that a seller enlist professional assistance to do a quality job. Sellers that opt to do it themselves, should consider the following tips: 1. Wash and wax the exterior, polish any metal, refinish any woodwork, repair, or replace, canvas and cushions. 2. Clean the interior thoroughly, steam-clean, or replace, carpets, clean upholstery or re-upholster. Unwanted odors must be removed, especially from the head, so get some air fresheners and disinfectant. Any personal effects, or items that make a boat look cluttered, should be removed. 3. After the initial cleanup, schedule regular wash downs, to keep a boat in top shape. Consider cleaning the exterior/interior every two weeks and the bottom should be clean of any marine growth and a new application of bottom paint. In addition, a seller should consider having me conduct a marine survey, before launching a marketing campaign. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a boat will save time, energy and money later. I can determine if a boat needs repairs and furnish a list of items that need to be fixed, for the boat to be in top condition. Buyers are looking for a boat that has been well-maintained, with receipts and maintenance log available; so uncovering any potential structural or mechanical problems early, gives you the opportunity to have them corrected and command your selling price. Making any necessary mechanical repairs, at the beginning of the sales process, will prevent costly delays during the negotiations and closing. Boat owners incur monthly expenses such as mortgage payments, insurance, slip and/or storage fees and maintenance. Also, non-use can be more costly than using a boat regularly, which increases the likelihood of additional repairs. Consider the following tips: 1. A boat must be in top mechanical condition, before launching a serious marketing campaign. Have the engine(s) and generator checked out by me and make all necessary repairs. Clean and paint the engine(s) and steam-clean the bilge. 2. All equipment, wiring systems and electronics must be in good working order. Repair, or replace, items that are not. Also, ensure that all safety items, such as navigation lights, horns and bilge pumps, are in good working order and all USCG safety gear is current. Remember, all offers are subject to a marine survey, sea trial and mechanical survey. Buyers must be satisfied by a boat’s condition, performance and eye-appeal, to complete the purchase. Please call, or email me, if additional information is needed about preparing a boat for sale. Rob Scanlan is a Master Marine Surveyor serving coastal New England, Cape Cod and the Islands. Sports newsman, Bob Lobel of WBZ-TV is making news about his on-camera actions and his squiring around with a single mother from Nahant. Lobel’s wife Suzanne McCarthy is standing by her man. Lobel’s ex-wife Susan Wornick of WCVB-TV thinks Lobel’s “goofball” act is due to someone who is experiencing personal pain. Huh? So who is the Nahant woman Lobel is seeing? Speaking of sports, I believe it was the brilliant Mary Dill, of Cary Street, who said, “The only draw back in being a good sport is that you have to lose to prove it.” As Mary’s illustrious husband Dan will tell you, a well-informed American knows the lineup of baseball teams and about half the words of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Lowell Gray Is Selling Out! The only home in Nahant valued in the millions is owned by Lowell Gray of Swallow Cave Road. His land and building is valued at $4,055,400! Well, his spacious home is up for grabs for $9,500,000! Yes, that is $9,500,000 million! What you get for your money is a “prestigious villa” on 1.89 acres of paradise. The price also includes a deeded, uninhabited, one-acre island. In brief, Lowell Gray, 45, the father of four daughters, purchased the oceanfront property five years ago. He is a Swampscott native and once the property is sold he will return to live in Swampscott. So who will be the next owner of Nahant’s highest assessed home? Tom Cruise? Oprah? Debra Winger? Jennifer Lopez? Giuseppe Barisano? Dan deStefano? Greg and Lissa Keene? Bob and Harriet Steeves? Lee Fox? Larry and Paula Smith? Phil and Pamela Osterlin? Bob and Peggy Silva? Madonna? Michael Jackson? Truth About Housework The amount of housework that American women do every week, fell from 30 hours to 17.5 hours between 1965 and 1995, while the amount that men do, rose from 4.9 hours to 10 hours a week. Married women estimated that their husbands did 33 percent of housework, while their husbands put their share at 42 percent. On average, according to several studies, men did 39 percent. The electrifying Ed Poulin, of Irving Way, claims some husbands help most with the house-cleaning when they stay away from home. Ed’s sweet wife, Gayle, a native of New Orleans, says, “Some women are good housekeepers; others try not to overwork their vacuum cleaners.” The alluring Sheila Hambleton, Nahant’s Assistant Town Assessor, says, “Some husbands are reasonable; others want their wives to do the housework for twenty years and still look like the girls they married.” The captivating Brenda D’Orazio-Cook, of Seaview Avenue, says, “The only job where the work is steady, but the pay isn’t, is housework.” Nahant’s stately Police Officer, Armand Conti, reminds us, “Man who drives like hell is bound to get there.” Nahanter’s Thoughts About Compliments Cal Hastings, of Nahant Road, says, “Be sincere with your compliments. Most people can tell the difference between sugar and saccharine.” Cal’s attractive and brilliant wife, Marrit, says, “Compliments are like perfume: to be inhaled, not swallowed.” Henry Hanagan, Hasting’s friendly neighbor says, “A compliment a day keeps divorce, far, far away.” Henry’s charming wife Peg, says, “Nobody has ever been bored by someone paying them a compliment.” A secret admirer of Peg, says, “Peg, you have a captivating personality. You are truly an inspiring woman.” Nahants’ Brainy Women Our gracious Mother Superior, Jody LaFalce, of Nahant Road, says, “God gave eloquence to some, brains to others.” Joanna Reardon, of Nautical Lane, says, “Always remember that a man is not rewarded for having brains, but for using them.” Jayne Solomine, of Foxhill Road, says, “Use your brains. It’s the little things that count.” Beverly English, of Little Nahant Road, says, “A cheap, but top-rate computer, is the one between your ears.” Carol Munnelly, of Castle Road, says, “The human tongue is only a few inches from the brain, but when you listen to some people talk, they seem miles apart.” Jean Hosker, of Valley Road, says, “There is no real substitute for brains, but silence does pretty well.” Our August Birthday Babies Time to bore you with some names of your friends and spying neighbors who have birthdays in August. The McDonoughs are the proud parents of triplets, Bradley, Maxwell and Alexander. As far as we know, they are Nahant’s only triplets. As their wondrous grandmother, Florence McDonough, will tell you, “A grandmother is a woman who used to sit up with her children, and now sits up with her children’s children.” Florence does enjoy being with her handsome and lively grandsons. She holds the distinction of being Nahant’s only grandmother of triplets! Michael Patrick Manning: The man with the right chemistry! Tudor Estate Had Two Acre Garden Frederic Tudor’s first passion was trees, and the more the better. From the very year his cottage was completed in 1825, he commenced what became a lifelong campaign to plant trees on treeless Nahant. The fact that the first settlers had deforested the peninsula so that they could pasture their cattle cut no ice with Frederic. Similarly, the scoffers who claimed that the salt air would kill all vegetation, including trees, only spurred Frederic on. What greater challenge did he need? Tell him something couldn’t be done and he instantly set out to do it. He who had brought ice to the inhabitants of far Hindustan could surely bring leafy shade to Nahant. Balm of Gilead trees were the first he planted, some 150 of them. They were quick growing and offered protection to slower-growing trees. Once started on his project, he went overboard, as was his manner. By 1832, he had 3,358 trees growing in his nursery. He kept adding new varieties to the stock: black poplars, firs, elm, oak, hickory, sassafras and beech. Within two years he had some 4,000 trees in cultivation, a total which he estimated would reach ten miles in length, if planted in a single row. SOURCE: Above text: Nahant on the Rocks. The Ice King is on sale now at the Nahant Historical Society The following letter dated 1849 is quoted by Johnson, and is mostly cited again as follows, for it gives a good contemporary account of what Tudor was doing: Among the many beautiful features of Nahant, one of the most beautiful is the residence of Mr. Tudor. We called to see his place on the occasion of a recent ride to our famed and favorite Nahant, and were politely received by our friend Mr. Wm. F. Johnson, to whom we express our thanks for this attention. The cottage and garden of Mr. Tudor are well worth a visit, and certainly deserve a mention to the public. The cottage is built of stone which was collected at Nahant, of a coarse or dark granite which is quite abundant there; the roof is covered with hemlock bark, giving the building an ancient appearance, which seems to be a taste the proprietor studies. Mr. Tudor’s garden contains over two acres, and is inclosed (sic) by a very substantial fence, about seventeen feet high, which not only protects it from intruders, but prevents in a great measure the effect of the violent wind. He has a large collection of very fine fruit trees, many of them beautifully trained on fences, giving them a very tasteful and ornamental appearance. One cherry tree, with its branches trained horizontally, covers a space of over five hundred square feet; some of its branches are about twenty feet in length, extending each side of the trunk perfectly straight. The pear trees look exceedingly well, considering that it is an unfavorable season for the pear crop in this vicinity, owing to the late frost in the spring. His plums are worthy of notice, all looking finely, and not-withstanding the depredations of the curculio, many of these trees are loaded with the finest plums. There are many interesting experiments in shading trees from the sun in the hottest part of the day, which have proven quite successful. All his experiments are tried in the most thorough manner. Among the many experiemnts is one quite novel of capturing insects; he has suspended in his trees between two and three hundred small bottles, partly filled with sweetened water, into which all flies, bugs and moths are enticed and drowned. Great quantities have been destroyed in this way. During two weeks of the dry weather in June there were captured about five hundred thousand bugs, and in thirtysix hours on the nineteenth and twentieth of June, one hundred and eight thousand were taken. NAHANT HARBOR REVIEW • AUGUST 2005 • Page 15 Frederic Tudor The Ice King Cometh The Ice Entrepreneur Another figure who appears in Nahant history ... is Frederic Tudor, who is probably the best known of all old Nahanters, though only by name to most. He was aggressive and eccentric, so that he has become a historic character of the town, the sort of whom many amusing and interesting stories can be told. His son, Frederic Tudor, writes of him as follows: In the earliest years of the century a young man just entering mercantile life, looking around him with a beginner’s enthusiasm for unthought-of and cheap commodities to carry to new and dear markets, lit upon the ice which in limitless fields clothed his native lakes in winter. Even at that time, well-to-do people housed a little ice for summer’s use, and to him occurred the possibility of transporting this great absorbent of heat and producer of cold to tropical latitudes, where its value would be the greatest. The substance was easily obtained, and to cut it into blocks convenient for handling cost very little. An uncertain but probably large part would be lost by melting: would there be a residue after storage, transportation and handling which could be sold at such a price that all expenses would be paid and a profit left over? The young man who considered this project was Frederic Tudor, the third son of Colonel William Tudor, a Revolutionary officer and friend of General Washington, and a lawyer of eminence. Born in Boston September 4, 1783, he was scarcely twentyone years of age when he began to ponder the scheme of a trade in ice, and he had so well satisfied himself of its feasibility that in 1805 a cargo of ice cut from a pond on his father’s country place in Saugus was actually loaded on board a schooner, and , in charge of himself as owner and supercargo, was shipped to the island of Martinique. The project, of which this was but an attempt, a bare opening of what he calculated would grow to be a great trade with the Indies, was laughed at by all his neighbors as a crazy undertaking.
