Circle 1000 Celebrates 25 Years
and Raises More than $1M
Circle 1000’s 25th anniversary brunch, held this year on April 25, was
a memorable and meaningful tribute to a quarter century of giving by
our extraordinary group of Circle 1000 underwriters and supporters.
It was a morning filled with many wonderful moments. The impact of
each cancer survivor and fighter standing and holding a candle as the
lights dimmed was very moving. It is certainly a big reason why Circle
1000 continues to dedicate its efforts to supporting Hoag Family Cancer
Institute as well as oncology physicians and nurses.
We brought a favorite Circle 1000 speaker back to celebrate this special
anniversary. Alan Hobson’s story first moved and awed us at the 14th
annual Circle 1000 brunch. Alan is an author, motivational speaker,
worldwide adventurer and Mt. Everest summiteer. He’s a two-time cancer
survivor who shared with us that speaking at Circle 1000 in 2001 was a
catalyst for his subsequent speaking and writings, which have inspired
thousands. He spoke of his sense of being back home with his Circle
1000 family as he shared his “CAN-WILL” message and his extraordinary
climb back from cancer.
As a special surprise, entering from the back of the room, while the
cancer survivors stood with their candles aglow, Taylor Carol thrilled us
with his stirring performance of The Impossible Dream. Taylor is a
17-year-old junior from Dana Hills High School, a singer, songwriter
and performer, and a survivor of a rare form of pediatric cancer. What
a privilege it was for us to witness his immense talent and passion for
living and for his music. He is a rising star to watch. Other special touches
included the 25th Anniversary video in which cancer physicians, nurses
and others offered touching messages of gratitude and good wishes.

Contributions raised over the last two-and-a-half decades have had a
profound impact on Hoag Family Cancer Institute’s ability to provide our
community with the finest physicians, nurses and staff and equip them
with the latest technology and treatments available.
Thank you for your dedication to Circle 1000—because of you we’ve
raised more than $1M this year for a total of $13.4M in our 25-year
history. (See the article on page 9 for details on how the 2012 funds were
allocated.) Your generous support and attendance enables Circle 1000 to
support Hoag Family Cancer Institute with the ability to offer world class
cancer care right here in Orange County.
We CAN and we WILL continue to make a huge difference in cancer care
and treatment for Hoag Family Cancer Institute and Hoag. On behalf of
the Circle 1000 Founders’ Committee, we thank you for celebrating
this special anniversary brunch. You DO make and HAVE made an
amazing impact!
Watch for details and the date to be announced for the 2013
Circle 1000 Annual Founders’ Brunch. In the meantime, visit us at

Gracious Giving – Lula Halfacre, Traditional Jewelers
Lula Halfacre & Alan Hobson
One spring day in 1990, Sandy Sewell went to Traditional Jewelers in search of a gift for Nancy
Reagan, that year’s brunch speaker. Upon learning what she was buying and why, store co-owner
Marion Halfacre, who passed away in 2007, immediately offered to donate the gift. A tradition
was born that day that has endured for 22 years and, each year since, Traditional Jewelers has
provided a lovely hand-picked speaker’s gift.
Named an “honorary Circle 1000 committee member” in recognition of her unwavering support,
Lula is moved by what Circle 1000 accomplishes for cancer patients in our community.
“It’s always been our honor to support Circle 1000,” she says. “We love to attend the brunch,
and it touches our hearts so much to be involved.”
“Thanks to her generosity in making this annual in-kind donation, Lula and Traditional Jewelers have a direct impact on the
Circle 1000 bottom line and provide a lasting keepsake for our wonderful speakers,” says Pame Schmider, Circle 1000 Chair.
“We are so grateful to Marion and Lula for supporting Circle 1000 through the years.”

de belles fleurs – Susan Bartlett and Edouard de Limburg
Susan Bartlett and Edouard de Limburg
For 25 years, philanthropists Susan Bartlett and Edouard de Limburg
have added beauty and style to the Circle 1000 Founders’ Celebration
Brunch by providing gorgeous floral centerpieces for the tables. A
member of the original Circle 1000 Founders’ Committee, Susan
served for 24 years. During the first five years Susan, with the help
of fellow committee member Sherry Cagle, made the centerpieces
herself through her floral business. Once she sold her business and
retired, Susan worked with local florists to create unique and lovely
centerpieces each year.
“At first it was my way of helping out,” shares Susan. “Then, when my daughter was diagnosed with cancer, I knew it was
something I needed to continue to do.” Edouard has steadfastly encouraged Susan to continue over the years and generously
provided underwriting for the flowers. “Susan puts in a great deal of thought and time in managing the flowers for the event
which is a big job,” says Circle 1000 Chair, Pame Schmider. “We deeply appreciate Susan and Edouard for taking this on and
for generously supporting Circle 1000 every year.”

Lin Auer – Vin Jorgensen Award Winner
Lin Auer
A Circle 1000 committee member for nearly 20 years, Lin Auer believes strongly
in giving back. Her devotion to service honors her late husband Al Auer and his
legacy of supporting Hoag, both financially and through his service on the Board
of Directors for more than 30 years. In addition to her work with Circle 1000, Lin
previously served six years on the 552 Club board and seven years on the Alzheimer’s
Family Services Center board. She’s served on the 552 Club Movie Screening
committee, Christmas Carol Ball committee and the Women’s Pavilion committee.
She recently joined the Hoag Neurosciences Institute Advisory Committee. Lin is
grateful to be of service through Hoag and Circle 1000, not only for the opportunity
to impact lives, but also for the deep friendships she’s built with fellow volunteers.

Circle 1000 supports Cancer Care at Hoag
We are moved and inspired by the magnitude of what we’ve accomplished together
on behalf of cancer patients in our community. You will be pleased to know that
funds raised in 2012 were designated to the following areas in Hoag Family
Cancer Institute:
$450,000—Three Nurse Navigators
By guiding patients through every step of the continuum of care, from diagnosis
through treatment, recovery and beyond, nurse navigators help provide the
patient-first care that is essential to Hoag.
$400,000—Four Part-Time Medical Directors
Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center
Cancer is not one disease but many, each with its own unique behavior pathology.
Disease-specific Clinics including Breast, Prostate, Colorectal, Lung, Hepatobiliary,
Pancreas, Head & Neck, Melanoma and Lymphoma, each with medical directors,
increase the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment.
$100,000—Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarship
The Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarship assists Hoag in increasing the overall education and skill level of
Hoag nurses and the number of nurses that are specialized in oncology.
$50,000—Nursing Support
Nurses are at the heart of exceptional care, and our community counts on Hoag nurses to provide the “Hoag brand"
of care during every encounter.
We are deeply grateful to our donors who, embracing the vision of supporting outstanding cancer care, have made a
real and lasting impact.
