LAPL NEWS Page 2 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT A Professional Land Company “Serving since 1977” JOHN G. MILLER, CPL President Hello all! I hope you all had a great summer. My name is Damon Weger and I am honored to take on the role as your ’08/’09 LAPL President. Over the past year I have enjoyed working with some fine individuals while executing my duties as 1st Vice-President. I would like to thank all of the past members who were instrumental in making our Association what it is today. I have learned much over the past year and I assure you that I will give my best to assist in moving us forward in a way that will be most beneficial to our membership. Our Executive Committee met last month and we had several exciting new ideas for the new year. We hope to implement the majority of these as we sort through which could work to the best interest of all members. Our goal is to provide you with as many opportunities as possible to become involved in LAPL events and to improve on our existing technology to create more industry visibility for our association. As you can imagine, much of the “behind the scenes” work that goes in to operating the LAPL is performed by volunteers who ask only that you show your support in way of attendance at sponsored events and participation in our online surveys to give us your opinion. Please do not hesitate to use the numbers on the front of the Newsletter to contact myself or any Committee Member or Chairperson to express your ideas or concerns. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events. God bless you all. OIL LAND SERVICES, INC. P. O. Weger, CPL LETTER FROM AAPL DIRECTOR Dear Members, I attended the AAPL Annual Meeting held this year in Chicago and it was so good to see many of our LAPL members there. What a great City! If you did not get to go, you should definitely try to make it to Chicago in the near future as it has many sights and activities to take part in and is a very clean and historical city. I would like to be the first to say CONGRATULATIONS to all LAPL members as LAPL was chosen Local Association of the Year by AAPL. I think this award is overdue and well deserved. We also won the Best Communication by a Director Award, too. Thanks to Chris Roy, all the officers and committee chairmen who have made this past year a very special one indeed. Special thanks goes out to Keith Hebert for his assistance and persistence. Thanks, Keith, for all you do. While in Chicago at the meetings, I was able to visit with many land men and land women from all parts of the country. One thing I continued to hear was that many of our LAPL members or “Louisiana landmen” are working in all areas, from the Northeast (NY, PN & WV) to the West (UT and CA) even in North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi, as well as North Louisiana. They told me how our work ethic and knowledge level seems to rank very high among our peers. So keep up the good work, guys. But remember that while away working in these areas, you are Land Ambassadors from this region and what you do and how you do it reflects on everyone down here. I also heard from several large companies that they are returning to South Louisiana again next year! With resource play pricing exceeding the once thought of exorbitant “South Louisiana Prices,” these companies are now talking of returning to South Louisiana in an effort to expand their production portfolio. South Louisiana prices now seem reasonable especially with the lure of high production rates. So you guys in far off lands, you may be able to come home and work very soon. On a different note, I often hear from future and current members asking me “what does AAPL or LAPL really do for me?” What I like to tell them is . . . “it is not really what these organizations do for you personally; you get back what you put in!” We can all tell you what a lease form says and what paragraph to find the royalty. As a LAPL member, I have made some really good friends from my business acquaintances both in Lafayette and abroad, and I have also learned a lot too. They help me stay in touch with new laws and regulations or what companies are working what areas, etc. So when you are filling out the papers to pay your dues, think about what you can do to get involved in both organizations, on local and national level. LAPL NEWS LETTER FROM AAPL DIRECTOR continued I would like to again say THANKS to all who have worked so hard this year continuing to make LAPL a resounding success. We need to remember that times are good throughout the oil patch, and we should continue to operate with both dignity and integrity. With high commodity prices and a brisk activity level, we should also be grateful and blessed both individually and collectively. Please remember the families of our peers who have passed away this year and are no longer with us and continue to keep them in our prayers. Should you have any questions or need information on anything, please call me and again thanks for allowing me to serve you. Page 5 DIEHL LAND SERVICES James G. In Memory Of… Mr. Charlie deGravelles, a longtime landman, who passed away on August 28 at the age of 95. Mr. Charlie was born in Morgan City on June 24, 1913 and attended Thibodaux High School. He then went to LSU in Baton Rouge where he played in the LSU band and graduated from LSU Law School in 1936. Mr. Charlie was employed by Amoco Production Company for 40 years before running his own independent oil leasing and abstract company in Lafayette. Mr. Charlie and his wife Virginia became two of the first registered Republicans in Lafayette in 1941. In the following years, they played a major role in building the Louisiana Republican party from a small organization that he jokingly said “could meet in a phone booth” to the predominant political party in the state that later elected three Republican governors and many congressmen in his lifetime. The deGravelles worked with many presidents including Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. They were very close to President Reagan in a relationship that began when Charlie got Reagan to visit Lafayette in 1964. Mr. Charlie is survived by his wife of 73 years, Virginia Wheadon deGravelles; his daughter Claire D. Cloninger and husband Spike of Fairhope, Alabama; daughter Ann McBride Norton, and husband Ed of Bali, Indonesia; son John deGravelles and wife Jan of Baton Rouge; the Rev. Charles deGravelles and wife Angela of Baton Rouge; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Our prayers go out to all of Mr. Charlie’s family. May God bless! While attending USL, he was a member for four years of the USL Golf Team, which won several Conference Championships and competed on a National level. After graduation from college, Jimmy served in the United States Army. Upon completion of his service to our country, Jimmy entered the land profession where he served as a Certified Petroleum Landman and continued his career until his death. Jimmy was co-owner, with his brother Russell, and President, of Suncoast Land Services in Lafayette. He belonged to several oil and gas associations, including LAPL, HAPL, PLANO AND AAPL and used his passion for golf to cultivate many friendships.
