Jackson’s Team Helps Build
a New Start for KidStart
At its October 28 meeting, The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming Board of Directors
initiated a "new start for KidStart" by unanimously passing a resolution that selects
7.8 acres of land in Groveland as the future home for primary services of the
children's services program.
As we prepare to break ground on the new KidStart building this spring, please
consider joining "Jackson's Team for KidStart" to help raise funds and community
awareness for a seamless transition of KidStart services into their new home.
The new building will be located on Route 63, 4 miles
south of the Village of Geneseo, across the road from the
Livingston County property known as Hampton Corners.
It will house KidStart services that are currently offered at
SUNY Geneseo's Holcomb Building, which will no longer
be available starting in 2011, due to new construction
by the college. KidStart's Mt. Morris operations will also
move into the new building, to save the agency $21,000
in rent and $4,000 in utilities per year compared to its
present location at 66 Stanley Street.
By joining Jackson's Team, you can help raise funds to
offset expenses associated with the move, construction,
and maintenance costs. You'll also draw needed attention
to the successful efforts of KidStart staff to provide a healthy, nurturing environment
where all kids can grow and function at their individual best.

Named for KidStart graduate Jackson Breen, Jackson's Team is a local, grassroots
effort spearheaded by KidStart parents, families, friends, and employees to conduct
community activities that benefit KidStart. The group has raised more than $1,000
thus far, through activities that included a Kids Carnival, Valentine's Dance, various
Auctions, and a Holiday Shopping Party.
You can benefit the KidStart building fund by running a fundraiser in your own
community, or by helping with a larger Jackson's Team event. To learn more, visit
Jackson's Team online at The Arc Web site, www.lwarc.org. You may also e-mail
[email protected] or attend a Jackson's Team meeting. Jackson's Team
meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at the
Holcomb Building, Room 270.
Chris Peterson, Executive Director for The Arc, expresses enthusiasm about KidStart’s
“new start”—and about the positive contributions of groups such as Jackson’s Team.
“This is a significant step toward our goal of finding a better replacement for the
Holcomb Building,” he says. “This new site allows us room for plenty of parking,
spacious playgrounds, and the ability to expand our valuable services.”

Donate Your Vehicle Today
and Make A Difference!
Happy 2010! Lots of exciting things are happening at the
Arc. We ushered out the year with the awesome Drama Club
production, “Happy Everything.” Thanks to all who worked
tirelessly to put this together. And, we ushered in the year
with the Open House at the new Retsof home. Congratulations
to the consumers who will be living in this barrier-free home.
Help us by donating your used car, van, truck, boat with trailer, or recreational
vehicle seven days a week, 24 hours a day. It’s as easy as filling out the on-line
donation form at www.lwarc.org or call 1-800-ARC-CAR0 (1-800-272-2270).
Along with ringing in the New Year, the Arc will be ringing in our 2010 membership
campaign, “Planting the Seeds of Today for the Flowers of Tomorrow.” Please join us!
Our organization continues to face enormous challenges given the current economic
climate. It would be helpful for our advocacy with legislature and government officials
to have our largest membership ever. Now, it may seem a bit ambitious to set our
goal at 900 members, but not when you consider we serve 895 individuals from birth
to seniors. If each person we serve had one advocate become a member, we would
easily meet this goal. Please be on the lookout for our membership mailing coming in
February. Consider renewing your membership, and maybe even inviting a friend or
family member to join our group. You will be making a difference in someone’s life—
because Membership Matters.
Wishing you a happy and healthy 2010!

The Livingston-Wyoming Arc Foundation was active
within our communities over the 2009 holiday season!
Utilizing monies raised at events held throughout the
year, along with donations, we were able to support
many of our community members, including individuals
with disabilities, and make their holiday season brighter.

Fun with crafts at the 2009
Breakfast with Santa event
In December, the Foundation sponsored our annual
Breakfast with Santa, a free community event, for over
150 children and young adults. A big “thank you” to
our many volunteers, including SUNY Geneseo students,
Board members, staff and of course Santa (aka Tim
McCallum) for a fun-filled morning!
In addition, the Foundation, in conjunction with The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming
employees, assisted in purchasing hundreds of gifts for the annual Angel Wreath
gift program that benefitted 142 local children. Each child received a bundle of
gifts to help make their Christmas Day special.
As we begin 2010, the Foundation looks forward to being more involved in making
a difference in lives of individuals throughout our communities. We hope that you
will support some or all of the upcoming events that make this possible, including
the Annual Dinner on June 4th, the 16th Annual “Friends Fore Life” Golf Tournament
on June 25th, the 8th Annual Divine Delights event on September 15th and the
Ramon Rocha Run/Walk event on October 2nd.
We are also happy to announce that the 2010 Foundation High School Student
Scholarship applications have been sent out to all area high schools. Check out
the article on page 3 and our website www.lwarc.org for complete information.

KidStart Joins the Kirch Center of
Rochester in Two Year Autism Study
Comments from the
Executive Director
KidStart has been designated as a partner in a 5-year research study sponsored
by the National Institute of Mental Health. A collaboration between the University of
Rochester Medical Center, Kennedy Kreiger Institute
and the University of California, Los Angeles, the
study will compare two intervention approaches for
spoken communication in autism and will enroll 192
particpants randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions across three sites.
Welcome 2010!
Dr. Tristram Smith of the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities and the Neurodevelopmental and
Behavioral Pediatrics Division at the University of
Rochester is conducting the study and has worked
as a consultant to KidStart children receiving DTT (Discrete Trial Training) interventions, or commonly identified as ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis).
KidStart creates a
comfortable, learning
environment for all children
Currently the initial phase of the study, which includes pre-treatment assessments
and behavioral interventionists meeting the KidStart children participating in the study,
is underway. Six months of treatment sessions consisting of one-on-one sessions
with a behavioral interventionist for each participant will be administered following
the initial phase, and will be repeated six months after the sessions are completed.
For more information about this study, contact: Drea Brown, Research Coordinator
at 1-585-276-5041 or e-mail: [email protected].
4-H Spreads Holiday
Joy for Local Kids
4H Club members
of Livonia take pride
in spreading holiday joy!
At the end of 2009, The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming
partnered with the 4-H Club of Livonia to spread
Christmas Day smiles to 142 local children.
Annually, the Livingston-Wyoming Arc Foundation
joins forces with local organizations, staff and
Board members to generously purchase toys and
necessary clothing, wrap and deliver bundles of
gifts for needy children just in time for Santa to
arrive on Christmas morning.
This year, Margaret Linsner, 4-H Leader of “Kooky Club,” and her group heard about
the annual gift drive at The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming through a parent and decided
to take on the project. They began by creating posters and flyers to distribute at
Livonia Intermediate School and collected, wrapped and delivered the donated gifts
to The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming Administrative Offices on December 17th. “By
involving my girls in community service projects, they learn to appreciate others and
become better community members. They understand the need to help those less
fortunate and it makes them feel good about giving back,” Margaret says.
The 4-H members include: Sarah Linsner, Sarah Nation, Sara Lazarony, Molly Stevens,
Molly DiVincenzo, Caroline Veldhuizen, Bekah Finster, Melissa Mineti, Amelia Dragone
and leader, Margaret Linsner. A special thanks to 4-H and everyone who contributes
to the Livingston-Wyoming Arc Foundation Angel Wreath Gift program.

Service Coordination
The Arc has two important construction projects going
forward in 2010. During the next few months, the Transportation department will be moving into their new home
next to Hilltop Industries at 3 East State Street in Mt. Morris.
Chris Peterson,
Renovations are underway and upon completion all transExecutive Director
portation maintenance and operations will be conducted
at the former Mahoney Ford building. Transportation continues to be the largest
service department that the Arc operates. Their excellent DOT safety ratings speak
volumes for their emphasis on operating a safe fleet of vehicles.
Land, located across from the Livingston County’s Hampton Corners complex on
Route 63, has been selected for the KidStart Holcomb relocation project, and an
offer has been submitted. We are presenting our design and construction plans to
the Groveland Town Board with the goal of commencing work this spring. As most
know, the Holcomb building is scheduled for demolition this summer and we need
to vacate the site by July 31, 2011. Thanks to all who have assisted with this
extremely important move.

Fun with crafts at the 2009
Breakfast with Santa event
In December, the Foundation sponsored our annual
Breakfast with Santa, a free community event, for over
150 children and young adults. A big “thank you” to
our many volunteers, including SUNY Geneseo students,
Board members, staff and of course Santa (aka Tim
McCallum) for a fun-filled morning!
In addition, the Foundation, in conjunction with The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming
employees, assisted in purchasing hundreds of gifts for the annual Angel Wreath
gift program that benefitted 142 local children. Each child received a bundle of
gifts to help make their Christmas Day special.
As we begin 2010, the Foundation looks forward to being more involved in making

Foundation Update
Calling All Students!
As we prepare to break ground on the new KidStart building this spring, please
consider joining "Jackson's Team for KidStart" to help raise funds and community
awareness for a seamless transition of KidStart services into their new home.
March is Developmental 4
Disabilities Month
The new building will be located on Route 63, 4 miles
south of the Village of Geneseo, across the road from the
Livingston County property known as Hampton Corners.
It will house KidStart services that are currently offered at
SUNY Geneseo's Holcomb Building, which will no longer
be available starting in 2011, due to new construction
by the college. KidStart's Mt. Morris operations will also
move into the new building, to save the agency $21,000
in rent and $4,000 in utilities per year compared to its
present location at 66 Stanley Street.
