Pre-Diabetes Class
Tai Chi Exercise Program
This one-time class is for those with pre-diabetes or at high risk
for developing diabetes. You will learn to: choose foods to help
improve health, incorporate physical activity into your lifestyle,
interpret food labels, and get started with a plan to help
manage weight. A support person is welcome to attend with
you. Cost is $30 and covers written materials and a pedometer.
Some insurance plans may reimburse class cost.
This program is specially designed for survivors of stroke,
cardiac surgeries or cardiac events, It uses slow, rhythmic
movements done in a variety of postures to improve balance,
relaxation and concentration. It is not an aerobic form of
exercise and can be done seated. Introductory and beginner
classes held fall and spring. Cost is $4 per session or $32 for
an eight-session card. The first class is free.

Joint Replacement Preparation
This free class helps you prepare for hip or knee replacement
surgery and recovery and is taught by members of your care
team, including nurses and physical therapists. We encourage
you to attend the class with a family member or close friend
two to four weeks before your scheduled surgery.

Adaptive Yoga for MS

Yoga improves balance, coordination and flexibility while
reducing stress. This six-week class for people with MS
introduces basic poses. If you have concerns about your ability
to perform yoga safely, consult a physician before registering.
An MS-certified specialist provides individualized adaptations if
needed. Cost is $10 per class or $50 for all six classes. Priority is
given to people registering for all six classes.
Staying Healthy with Diabetes
These group and individual sessions are for people with type 1,
type 2, pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes. Topics include:
What is diabetes, methods of treatment for control, blood
glucose monitoring, medications, activity, individualized meal
plan and more. Physician referral is required.

Cognifitness — Keeping the Mind Moving
SENIOR SERVICES
Improve memory, increase attention and enhance your ability
to communicate. This program helps people with MS improve
the seven main areas of cognition and reduce stress related to
cognitive issues. Attendance at all seven classes is recommended.

Work one-on-one with a registered dietitian and learn how
to reduce risk factors associated with heart disease, cancer
and diabetes. Learn to help your body fight the side effects
of cancer treatments and possibly reduce your need for
some medications. This program can help with weight, high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, eating disorders, food
allergies, digestive problems, kidney problems and diabetes.
PreferredOne insurance may cover five nutrition visits per year
for certain conditions, including obesity (BMI>30), diabetes,
high cholesterol, high blood pressure and more. Physician
referral required. Multiple locations.

Adult Day Programs serve adults age 55-plus who live at
home but would benefit from personal care and assistance,
scheduled activities, and supervision during the workweek.
Whether participating for one or a few days a week, an adult
day program provides specialized programming and social
stimulation for attendees, and support for care givers seeking
a break in their routine.

This program is designed for people with obstructive and
restrictive lung disease including chronic obstructive pulmonary

Create Your Weight
This 11-week course includes nutrition education, physical
activity and the role of behavioral therapy in weight reduction
and weight management. You may have your metabolism
tested through a 10-minute breath test that will accurately
determine the number of calories you need to maintain or lose
weight. Cost is $235. Fairview employees with PreferredOne
insurance can receive 100 percent reimbursement upon
completing nine of 11 sessions. Afternoon and evening classes
available.

Weight Management Exercise Program
This exercise program focuses on individuals who are
overweight. The initial evaluation includes electrocardiogramy
(ECG), blood pressure and oxygen saturation monitoring, along
with a six-minute walk evaluation. This information helps in
developing individualized exercise instruction and goal setting.
Group sessions follow, which include aerobic exercise on a
variety of stationary machines, strength training and stretching.

having difficulty with pain and sadness from grief for the loss
of a loved one. Group interaction, education and support are

From Pain to Pen to Promise — Edina
In this 12-week therapy group for adult women, participants will
learn how extreme stress and trauma affects the mind, body,
emotions and spirit. They will learn how experiencing extremely

Beyond the Basics of Breastfeeding
While breastfeeding is natural, it is still an art, and needs skill and
practice. Be sure to attend a prenatal breastfeeding class to learn
ways to make breastfeeding easy and enjoyable for you and your
baby. This class is offered by a lactation consultant from Fairview
Northland Medical Center. It includes the basics of breastfeeding,
and goes more in depth into common problems and solutions,
pumping and storing, and weaning. Fathers are encouraged
to join this class to learn how to be more supportive of the
breastfeeding mother. Class limit eight couples.
Childbirth Preparation
This four-week series of classes is designed for the couple,
or a birthing coach and mother, from 26 weeks through 36
weeks of pregnancy. The series includes the basics of breast
and bottle feeding. A physician and/or Labor & Delivery nurse
attends one class for a question-and-answer session. A tour of
The Birthplace will be offered during each class series. Wear

Learning to love one’s body, developing a healthy relationship
with food, improving self esteem, developing and regaining
one’s identity, reclaiming health and life are some of the
primary goals of outpatient treatment program. Our team
consists of a medical director, nutritionist and therapist.
Psychiatric and psychological consultations are available. Family
education classes are offered two times a year. The first step is
a comprehensive assessment with our nutritionist and therapist.

GRIEF
This series of classes helps prepare parents for their
childbirth experience.
Community Education and Grief Support
This program includes education, support and community
resources for issues related to death, dying and grief. Hospice
staff are available for public speaking, training and one-on-one
support.
Expectant parents are encouraged to register at their first OB visit.
Cost: $10/class or seven basic classes for $60.

This support group is for stroke survivors, family members
and care-givers.
Parents are encouraged to attend discharge and postnatal
classes for the baby’s first three months, which are offered free

Yoga for Enhancing Your Mood
Research has found that the practice of yoga has a positive
effect on changing mood and promoting a state of relaxed
alertness. If you suffer from depression, anxiety or seasonal
affective disorder (SAD), please join us for this class to learn
gentle yoga postures, breathing practices and meditation
techniques to raise your energy, improve your depression, ease
your anxiety and elevate your mood. You do not need to get
down on the floor to participate and benefit from this class.
Start where you are and learn tools that will improve the quality
of your life.

YOGA Therapy
Yoga therapy is a holistic practice which supports health
and healing on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual
level. Yoga’s tools include yoga postures linking breath with
movement, conscious breathing techniques, meditative practices
and guided self-inquiry. Other yoga practices help improve
lifestyle awareness choices and their effects on quality of life.
Individual yoga therapy and therapeutic group classes can help
individuals facing chronic health challenges. Through yoga they
can learn to manage their condition, reduce symptoms, restore
balance and improve attitude and quality of life.

ONE-ON-ONE YOGA THERAPY SESSIONS
Michele Hoffman, certified yoga therapist, will design a
personal yoga practice for you to do at home that is tailored for
your unique physical, mental and emotional needs. Cost: $53
for a one-hour session and $145 for three one-hour sessions.
THERAPEUTIC GROUP YOGA CLASSES
Fairview Red Wing offers a comprehensive program in yoga
therapy to empower our patients to participate in their own
healing process. Specialized classes are offered throughout the
year for people living with various health conditions.
Chair Yoga for Chronic Health Conditions
Research has shown that yoga can provide an increased sense
of empowerment and the ability to better perform the activities
of daily living. Therapeutic chair yoga can provide many benefits
for chronic health conditions such as cancer, osteoarthritis,
diabetes, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, hypertension, MS,
COPD, rheumatoid arthritis, GERD, and chronic back pain
just to name a few. Join us for this class which will include a
gentle movement practice, relaxation techniques and breathing
practices to help to reduce symptoms, improve sleep, increase
energy, restore balance and improve your attitude and overall
quality of life. The class will be personalized to the needs of
the participants. We will do yoga poses sitting in a chair and
standing using a chair for balance.

Yoga for Type II Diabetes
Studies show that yoga-based therapy for type II diabetes can
reduce fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1C and medication
dosage. In this class, you will learn simple yoga practices to lower
stress hormones which elevate blood sugar, heart rate, blood
pressure and LDL cholesterol. You'll learn healthier food choices
and practice mindful eating to get more enjoyment from the
food that you eat. This class also is helpful for people who are
pre-diabetic and want to prevent the onset of type II diabetes.

Yoga for Pregnancy & Childbirth
Prenatal yoga classes will be offered periodically throughout the
year to assist women in preparing for childbirth and helping
them manage the discomforts of pregnancy such as low back
and hip pain and sciatica.

Car seat technicians and practitioners are available to check
your car seat for proper use and installation. Information will be
provided in the proper use and selections of car seats for optimal

Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation
This program is for individuals with recent heart-related
diagnoses. Continuous ECG, heart rate and blood pressure
monitoring during exercise sessions provide the basis for learning
the principles of an individualized, safe fitness program of
conditioning, strengthening and flexibility. Lifestyle modification
education for coronary artery disease risk reduction is also
provided. Physician referral/insurance provider approval required.

Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation
This program is for people who completed Phase II Cardiac
Rehabilitation and want to maintain heart fitness. Cardiac
rehabilitation therapists provide intermittent ECG and blood
pressure monitoring, reinforce healthy habits, and provide
resources and ongoing support. Physician referral is required.

Crossroads: Day Program for Active Generations
NUTRITION
This service is available for adults, 18 years of age or older, who
need or desire interaction with others. Services are tailored
to meet the needs of each person and are determined by
participants themselves, their caregivers and the CrossRoads
staff. We provide a protective, caring environment where adults
feel welcome and comfortable.
Outpatient nutrition counseling is available to educate clients
on a variety of nutrition issues including: diabetes, weight loss,
hypoglycemia, heart disease, sodium restriction, renal disease,
fiber modification, eating disorders, prenatal nutrition and others.

DIABETES
The Diabetes Resource Center offers a series of group sessions
or individual appointments for people with pre-diabetes, type 1
diabetes, type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes to learn how
to manage your diabetes. Topics include individualized meal
planning, monitoring glucose levels, medication(s) management,
how to develop an exercise plan, coping with diabetes, balancing
diabetes management into your lifestyle and more.

This ongoing support group is open to all cancer patients. The
group provides mutual support, information and discussion on
a variety of topics related to a cancer experience. A registered
nurse facilitates the group.

Expectant Parent(s) Classes
This series is a four-week session designed for first-time parents
and coaches. Lectures, handouts and videos are used to cover a
variety of topics. Cost is $30 per couple, scholarships are available.
First Steps to Parenting
This prenatal parenting class is a two-session class teaching
practical information on parenting a newborn and making
important decisions. No fee.
Refresher Prenatal
This one-night class is designed for parents and coaches who
have experienced a previous birth. A variety of topics are
discussed and a tour of Fairview’s Women’s Health and Birth
Center is provided. Cost is $10 per couple (scholarships are
available). Parents unable to attend the Refresher Prenatal Class,
but who would like to review what to expect during labor and
delivery, may obtain just the educational materials for a fee of $5.
Sibling-To-Be Tour
A visit to the Women’s Health and Birth Center will help your
other children prepare for the arrival of a new baby brother
or sister. Children can bring a favorite doll or stuffed animal
to pretend holding and changing a new baby. They will see
a room like the one mom and the baby will be in during the
hospital stay. This tour is geared for pre-schoolers and young
school-age children. Try to tour one month before the baby is
due to be born. No fee.
Moms on Bed Rest
This service is provided on an as-needed basis for the expectant
mother who is on bed rest and is unable to attend hospitalbased prenatal classes. No fee.
