gay & lesbian market
quick facts
• Studies estimate that between 4% and 10% of the population
are gay or lesbian, which translates to between 850,000 and
2.1 million gay and lesbian people in Australia.
• Australian and international market research and advertising
sectors have found that the gay and lesbian community:
– Possess a high level of disposable income;
– Are more likely to buy from companies they perceive to be gay/lesbian friendly;
– Live in both urban and suburban areas;
– Encompass singles, couples, and families.
• The discretionary income of gays and lesbians is growing
every year, along with their presence in the workplace and
marketplace. Recent estimates gauge the gay consumer market
will be US$744billion by 2009.
• Forbes estimates a $16.8 billion value to gay weddings across
several years in the $70 billion-per-year U.S. wedding industry
- figures that translate to the Australian market, especially
given the increasingly formal recognition of gay and lesbian
relationships in Australia.
• A recent US National survey found 24% of G&L adults report
that they always or often “ like to keep up with the latest styles
and trends”. 17% of G&L adults also state that they “tend to
upgrade to the latest model or version of a product” and 36%
of respondents over 21 say they always or often specify the
alcoholic brand name when ordering mixed drinks.
• Companies who have tapped into the gay and lesbian
advertising market include Australian Tourism Commission,
Domayne, Smirnoff Vodka, TNT, Johnson & Johnson, IBM, Sony
Music, Sky Television, Virgin Blue, Avis, Subaru, Jaguar, Bonds,
IKEA, Levi, Motorola, Raddison Hotels, SkyBlue, ANZ, Coopers,
Volkswagon & Volvo.

climates of Perth. Suzanne or Sooz, as she goes by, was
travelling with a purpose though. Perth born Michelle Harrison had
met Sooz online some two years ago but it wasn’t till they began chatting about
the Twilight films in early 2010 that a greater interest blossomed. In August, the pair
started playing around with the idea of a move and two months later, Sooz was on the plane. ‘We
talked about it and bam! It was done, it was very quick,’ says Sooz.
The 25 year-old feels good about the move now but at the time had been ‘very scared’. ‘The plane ride here
was horrible… I left on the 24th [October] and arrived by the 26th,’ she said. Besides the obvious contrast
in weather, the Scot found a number of things quite different to her home country: ‘The people; the places;
the fact that you take so long to from one place to the other since our towns are quite close.’ Eight months
on and the couple who are clearly in love couldn’t be happier, and are looking forward to a future together.
Sooz has been working regionally recently to try and gain an extra year in Australia. Visa 417 or 462, better
known as Australia’s Working Holiday visa grants a person a full-year of work in Australia with the option of a
second year if you’ve worked three months regionally. For the moment Sooz’s future hangs in the balance of
the Immigration Department. ‘I don’t know if I’m going to get another year, hopefully; I’ve done my farm
work so it should be ok.’ Michelle was confident that her partner would be able to stay in the
country. Federal law reforms harmonised the pathway to citizenship for same-sex
couples in 2008 although Michelle has her doubts. Michelle said: ‘The
stress is the immigration because we know once she gets
that second-year visa, that’s it, its heads down

the 31 year-old moved to Australia when he was just two. His father

migrated to Perth initially in 1979 to work in the mines with no English. Haidyn, the
youngest of six children, followed his family and joined his father in 1981. ‘They [his parents]
love Australia but they still hold onto some things that make them feel Turkish as a comfort thing,’ he said.
‘I don’t have any day-to-day feelings of connectedness with Turkey, however play me some Turkish music
and I go into a different world’.
While he had known he was gay from a young age, familial and cultural pressures pushed him away from
his natural inclinations. In his twenties, Haidyn became ‘morbidly depressed’ at his situation: ‘I couldn’t live
a lie anymore… I was really at my lowest point and I thought I could never come out to my family; they’re
from a Turkish background, they’re Muslim’. In 2004, he moved to Melbourne to come out. It would take
sections
him about two years to adjust to being out in Melbourne but once he did, he reached the point where he
knew he had to tell his family. One by one, he came out to his siblings over the phone much to their shock.
On a visit to Perth in 2005, he told his mother who had ‘a big, emotional breakdown’. Haidyn’s mother
struggled with the news but after two years and much support from his siblings, ‘she came around’.
In Turkey, homosexuality has been legal since 1958 however Haidyn believes cultural taboos and stigmas

still exist. ‘You can go to Istanbul and go to a gay bar and you’ll meet transsexuals and drag queens
and everything is all there however outside of those city limits, it’s back to traditional
Turkish culture.’ At the moment, Haidyn is in the process of relinquishing his

‘No fat, no fem, no Asians’ is a
regular phrase Gavin Tsai reads while
perusing profiles for online social media like
Manhunt, Gaydar or Grindr. His qualm with this mindset is
not so much that it’s offensive but that many guys who write it probably
have never been with an Asian gay guy. Taiwanese-born, Gavin says living in
Perth can be like living in a ‘minority within a minority’.
says he could face time in prison for not completing
compulsory national service.
Notice how some people so effortlessly exude style? The same can be said for a Webb & Brown-Neaves. Subtle
The 34 year-old has lived in Perth for the past 12 years, leaving Taipei as the gay and lesbian movement
was well underway. Gavin came out at 17 just as the scene was evolving in Taiwan; his family lived just 10 metres
away from Funky, one of the first gay venues in the city. He loves Perth and backs it up by stating that he would
have moved to the east coast by now if he didn’t.
yet bold, eclectic yet harmonious, a Webb & Brown-Neaves is the absolute expression of individualism and
personal style. While trends may come and go, your unique Webb & Brown-Neaves vision will be admired and
appreciated for years to come. Put the style into your lifestyle – visit a landmark display home this weekend.
Yet he believes there is a mood in Perth that does not bode well for gay men of Asian descent. ‘In Perth, the gay and
lesbian community, more specifically in the gay community, there is a lot of prejudice towards people of colour…
more specifically, if I’m daring enough, gay Asians,’ says Gavin. He is not talking about general discrimination per
se; it’s more about ‘mate selection’. ‘We don’t really have a presence of a gay Asian community’ he said. Gavin
suggests there are a great number of gay men from the region in Perth although the population is largely transient
due to the international student population and opportunities on the eastern seaboard.

Gavin himself was drawn to Australia for its focus on the individual. He said ‘from a very young age, I had very
valued individuality which is what Australia’s society highly valued’. Sexuality and his heritage played little influence
in the scheme of things for Gavin: ‘To me, it does not really matter, I see myself as an individual just like I see
everybody else’.

SUMMER’S
LAST DAYS
WICKED WEDGES!
FEMALE AGENTS
(Sat Mar 5, SBS- 10pm)
A group of female resistance fighters recruited by Britain
rescue a scientist with vital knowledge of Normandy and
assassinate a top-ranking Nazi, all to safeguard D-Day.
This is a great French film.
SOS
(Sat Mar 5, SBS- Midnight)
I know Gok’s pain. I too
was once too fat to be
fashionable. Thank god it
didn’t last long and, like
Karl Lagerfeld and now
Gok Wan, I was able to
pass it off as a dalliance
with a new look… one
that couldn’t fit sample
sizes, unfortunately.
Interesting and eclectic bunch of short Queer films from
around the world, including: Kaveri- in which a young guy
is bored with predictable sex with women until a male
friend, er, lends a hand; Vibracall- in which two women
discover just how awesome hands-free technology can
be; and Scripts Against Discrimination: Dirty Slappingan educational short made specifically to address the
recent suicide of gay youth in American schools.
This is a light-hearted read about stylist to the
masses Gok Wan’s childhood. This guy wears his
heart on his sleeve. He’s happy to speak about
obesity. He’s happy to place emphasis on how
happy he is now. And as Britain… and the world…
slides toward an era of extremes, either being too
fat or too thin, Wan weighs in the judicial serenity
and certainty of someone who has been there, done
that and now looks bloody damn good.
Yes, we’re a society obsessed with our weight. And
yes, it might seem a little ironic telling their story of
how now their thin life is better. Trust me, it doesn’t
get ‘better’, you just reclaim a sense of certainty and
control. The goal, as Wan points out, is to achieve
balance – be good to your body, but don’t starve
your soul. This makes Wan a modern British hero.
And god know that country needs some.

DAVID ATTENBOROUGH: FIRST LIFE
(Sun Mar 6, ABC-7:30pm)
Sir David Attenborough, now 84 years old, goes full
circle in this brilliant series, in which he revisits the same
locations he went to in the series that first brought him
international acclaim, 1979’s Life on Earth.
PARTY DOWN
(Thurs Mar 10, ABC2- 8pm)
The catering firm are chuffed to land a high-profile gay
wedding, only to be upstaged by a rival catering firm
comprised completely of scantily clad muscular hunks.
MODERN FAMILY
(Sun Mar 13, Ten- 7:30pm)
Hit US sitcom that includes gay couple Cameron and
Mitchell and their adopted Korean daughter, who are
shown as just another facet of the typical family unit.
This season features support from gob-smackingly
beautiful James Marsden as Cameron and Mitchell’s
perennially shirtless neighbour.
XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS
(Tues Mar 21, 7TWO- 3am)
She’s baa-aack! Even in repeat and an hour that
duplicitous war god Ares would find unsporting. Lucy
Lawless’ ferociously awesome Amazon Xena and her
early sidekick and blatant love-interest Gabrielle were
kicking ass and taking names all over ancient New
Zealand before the guys with hairy feet and pointy ears
made it cool.
LIFE AFTER PEOPLE
(Thurs Mar 23, 7MATE- 7:30pm)
Poets are not mundane
people. And nor should they
be. After all, it is their task to
report the peripheries of the
world, the dark edges, the
boundaries at which we
balk and turn back from.
Paul Harrison achieves
such a poetic fearlessness
with aplomb.
Intriguing science faction documentary series which
uses computer animation and input from futurists and
architects to examine how the Earth would cope if
humans literally disappeared.
STALE CHIPS!
His work is gritty. It is human. At
times, horrifically and disturbingly so. His poems,
like no laughing matter, recount the trajectories of
lost souls with unabashed tenacity. Sex and religion
collide with verocity. In fact, the matter of the spirit
is explored often, as in all at sea when at ‘2am the
fly agaric dreams / fire up again / residuals of a
towering babel’.
Harrison’s debut collection is fearless, reckless
yet uncertain, making for a brave stance on being
human.

SH*T MY DAD SAYS
(Mon Mar 20, Nine-8pm)
Everything you need to know about this useless sitcom
can be summed up by three facts- firstly, it is based on
a Twitter Account; secondly, the shtick of the program is
that the elderly Dad comes up with hilarious politically
incorrect statements, that may also be taken as racist,
sexist and homophobic; and thirdly, over-rated hack
William Shatner plays the dad.
BENNY HINN
(Thurs Mar 24, Ten-3:30am)
Why do Ten insist on punishing insomniacs by constantly
airing this American Televangelist in the wee small
hours? Isn’t the lack of sleep they have to go through
torment enough?!
Make the most of the last days of sunshine, gather some friends and head
down to your nearest park or beach for a picnic. A picnic is minimal work,
grab some fresh fruit, bread, cold meat and cheeses and throw a simple
salad together. Take a radio, some cards and a Frisbee along for some fun.
TWO GUYS AND A GIRL
Give your picnic a theme, like fish and chips. Envisaged here
as salmon sandwiches and little cups of potato salad. Cut the
potato’s into long strips so they look like French fries.
Friendship- there’s nothing quite like it. A good friend can provide a shoulder to
cry on, a shoulder to lean on, and a shoulder to help you move the body of that
Jehovah’s Witness when the neighbours start complaining about the smell.
But what of friendships- really, really close
friendships- between two guys? They’re
inseparable, they argue like an old married
couple, they know each other’s likes, dislikes and
food allergies, and they spend all their free time
together- does this count as friendship, or is it
dating without the sex? Well, grab your bestie as
we examine the ins and outs of Two Guys and a
Girl (Weekdays, Ten-3:30pm) And is it really
without the sex anyway? There only seems to be
one bedroom...
The now-in-repeat Two Guys and a Girl, which
began as the superior titled Two Guys and a Girl
and a Pizza Place, takes a simple premise- two
young men working different shifts at a pizza
shop meet through a mutual female friend and
end up liking each other more than they like
her, so much that they flat-share together, then
she moves next door- and stretches it out into
a surprisingly funny mid-Nineties sitcom. All
manner of bizarre things happen to the trio, from
a naked cat burglar targeting the pizza shop to
a Halloween special involving a psychotic pizza
boy, evil clones and body snatching scientists.
From these humble beginnings, three things were
made, the career of Ryan Reynolds, the career of
Nathan Fillion and the most homoerotic television
show ever made.
This was indeed the show that put Ryan Reynolds
(Blade III, Buried, The Proposal, Green Lantern)
and his phenomenal torso on the map and into
the dreams of gay men everywhere. Reynolds
plays Michael “Berg” Bergen, a final-year med
student. It’s interesting to watch this early Ryanhe’s got all his acting quirks in place- particularly
the odd pauses between words and the eyebrow
tics he uses as punctuation. Additionally, whilst
Two Guys era Ryan is still buff, he’s not-super
buff. I actually prefer him here, cute and seems
approachable, like if you recognized him on the
street he’d give you a hug. In 2011 super-ripped
Ryan looks like he’s about to burst in a explosion
of too-tight muscle and steroids at any moment
and seems colder, like if you recognized him on
the street he’d let you hug him, but then bend
your arm behind your back until you gave him
your wallet.
2
The second of the two guys is Pete Danville,
played by possibly gay actor Richard Ruccolo (The
X Files, All Over the Guy). It’s a pity that Ruccolo
didn’t break out of the show like Reynolds and
Fillion did, as he’s definitely the best actor on the
show, and is quite cute in a ‘sexy geek’ way.
The ‘Girl’ of the show, Sharon, is played by the
endearing Traylor Howard. Howard plays quirky
well, actually coming across as genuine and
4
likeable, unlike other actresses (cough Jenna
Elfman cough) who seem to confuse quirky with
psychotically deranged and aggressive. Based
on all the homoeroticism between Pete and Berg
I suspect Sharon was just added to the cast to
defuse any implication of a sexual relationship
between the guys.
Cheese, Crackers and Dip are easy to put together. Choose a few
really different cheeses, a soft Havarti, boldly flavoured cheddar
and something unexpected, we love this dark coloured Norwegian
Brunost that tastes like toffee.
The show’s other break-out performer is Nathan
Fillion (Firefly, Castle). The sweet, and hot, actor
is in fine funny form here as Sharon’s well... 6
sweet and hot fire-fighter boyfriend, Johnny.
Well meaning but clueless, Johnny is often the
catalyst for some of the show’s more homoerotic
moments.
tune ut
Yes, lots of homoeroticism is found in Two Guys
and a Girl. I’ve seen non-gay specific shows
that are homoerotic/slashy before- Mulder and
Krycek’s in The X Files, Tommy and Merton in Big
Wolf on Campus, Nick telling Greg he loved him
in sign language in CSI, and any bit of dialogue
between Dean and the Archangel Castiel on
Supernatural but compared to the homoerotic hijinks of Two Guys and a Girl the aforementioned
shows look about as gay as Lethal Weapon.
BACK IN The CluB
Every single episode usually contains some form
of implication that Pete and Berg are sleeping
together and a running gag is them being
mistaken for a couple and not being bothered by
it. Even the show’s official website got in on the
act, inventing a Drinking Game for the show.
An American sitcom that’s actually funny and has
cute guys aplenty, grab a Pizza and a best mate
and watch it!
Create a healthy salad of rocket, crumbled feta and walnuts.
Make a dressing of olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice. Keep the
dressing separate until you’re ready to eat.
Boy George has

music and a new
enthusiasm for the

CONFIDENT
AND
CENTRE
STAGE
From Young Talent Time
to pop diva, serious singer
songwriter to musical
theatre, French chanteuse
to independent artist and
mother, it’s easy to forget all
the different phases of Tina
Arena’s career and life. With
over 30 years experience as a
performer Arena is set to join
the WA Symphony Orchestra
for a series of concerts.
‘It’s a really interesting musical night, it goes through a few of the
classics I’ve had, numbers from Songs of Love and Loss Volume 1 and
2, and we’re adding some new repertoire, trying some new stuff. I love
playing a whole spectrum of music.
Free of the constraints of a major label deal Arena’s last two English
albums featured a diverse range of covers from Bacharach and David
classics to more modern songs by artist like Nik Kershaw, Kate Bush
and Sting.
‘A straight on play is something I would like to approach at some point’
says Arena cautiously, indicating It would have to be the right one to
tempt her away from family commitments. Family is the centre of
Arena’s life today. As we chat on the phone from her home in France
Arena pauses to speak to her five year old son.
Last year Arena was featured on the W.A. produced program Who Do
You Think You Are. Her episode gave the series its highest ever ratings
and Arena explains that finding out more about her family’s roots is
something she is proud of.
‘Those songs are snapshots, they’re like photo’s says Arena, ‘I was
listening to them at a particular time in my life, they inspired me. The
albums were about paying tribute to those artists and singers who had
really marked my journey.’
Re-interpreting the works of your heroes is no easy task. We asked
Arena how she approached taking on the greats.
‘I never overdose on listening to stuff, I’m one of those people who
likes to remain incredibly naïve, therefore it enables me to give it my
slant. I just do what touches me and go purely on instinct, the emotional
feeling.’
On the flipside of the cover experience, Arena has found her own tunes
have become popular material for American country singers.
‘It’s amazing, there’s only one way to look at that kind of stuff and
it’s to be incredibly flattered by it, it’s a great compliment to me. It’s
like someone saying, this song really touches me, I identify with it. I
think that’s the greatest compliment you can be given as a singer or
songwriter. I think they’re all really courageous, they’re good singers, the
women in Nashville.’
‘The greatest most fantasmical
moment is when you’re on stage’
was visually spectacular and sonically spectacular, with a cast that was
diverse and interesting. That shows really fascinates me.
‘It was life changing’, she explains, ‘It was positive and personal,
but it was opening Pandora’s box, not just for me, but particularly for
my parents. It was confronting and it certainly stirred a hell of a lot
of emotions. I think the good thing was… it paid tribute to two very
intriguing families.
‘The journey was interesting, it changed my life, to be very honest,
it enabled me to able to give something to my son, it gave me the
opportunity to discuss things with my parents that maybe been avoided
before, it was a very positive experience.
‘You want to respond’, she says ‘but you can’t, then you really do open
up a can of worms, my mother and I have had issues in the past, who
doesn’t have issues with their parents? It’s such a bloody normal thing.
It’s wonderful to be able to get to 43 years of age and look at your Mum
and your Father and be happy and open about things, our relationship is
a very healthy one’
‘I’ve always had a connection with the character’s I’ve played, I feel like
they’re a part of me. Although I wouldn’t say Sally Bowles is completely
like me… her addiction to cocaine was something that is not my cup of
tea, but her sense of insecurity, its part and parcel of the artistic life.’
Later this year Arena hopes to head into the studio to record a new
album, no longer signed to a major label she enjoys the creative
independence, but highlights that getting on stage in front of audience is
her favourite part of the business.
Returning to musicals in the future is not out of the question for Arena,
‘The greatest most fantasmical moment is when you’re on stage, having
a great time telling stories and having an audience that is kind enough to
listen, that’s the greatest part of it.’
‘I really love Nine, I remember doing Nine in 1987 with John Diedrich
and 21 women. It’s a long time ago, I’m very surprised that nobody
has put that show on again, I would love to attack one of the roles in
that.’ Reflecting on the production Arena notes, ‘I think Australians are
very avant-guarde, John Diedrich was incredibly brave to put Nine on. It

You recently just completed the
sell-out Night of the Proms tour
where you played to over 15,000
fans a night – what can you tell us
about this?
The Night of the Proms event is an
institution in Europe and it’s basically
a one hundred and forty piece
orchestra playing classic pieces with
a few pop or rock acts thrown in for
good measure. The mix of artists they
have is quite astounding, imagine
Boy George, Grace Jones and John
Fogerty! On paper it seems quite
insane but somehow it works and
I got to perform ‘Proud Mary’ with
Fogerty which was out of this world.
The Orchestra Il Novecento are the
hippest and most versatile orchestra
I’ve encountered and I would kill to do
night of the Proms again in the future!
It’s been almost 10 years since
your last album – how has this
space of time informed and
influenced the end result that is
Ordinary Alien?
The ten year gap was more of an
accident than anything deliberate or
planned. What was that John Lennon
quote? ‘life is what happens while
you’re busy making other plans. I’ve
been working solidly as a DJ for
such a long time, traveling the world
spinning in clubs. I did make an album
called ‘Yum Yum’ under the guise of
‘The Twin’ but I released it myself
and it was very alternative and crude
compared to what I usually create.
I’m still very proud of it but this new
album has a more commercial feel, its
closer to pop than ‘Yum Yum’.
I not sure if space or time have
any bearing on what I do, I never
wear a watch but I’m excited about
working with a proper label again and
having my music heard. I suppose
I’ve learnt that being organised and
professional is the way forward and
it’s the only way things actually get
done. I’ve suffered from a fair bit of
procrastination over the past few
years, what with my troubles with
drugs and the law and other such
demons but right now my head is
screwed on properly and I’m ready to
get down to business!
Arena shares that the feedback she received after the show becoming
public was confronting. After the screening she received letters asking
her to apologise to her mother.
Arena is well known for being forthright in her views, so it’s no surprise
that her forays into musical theatre have been playing bold characters
like Cabaret’s Sally Bowles and Chicago’s Roxy Hart.
written at those crucial moments.
What can you tell us about the title of the
album? I mean, you’re by far one of the least
ordinary people currently working in dance
music?
Do you see a need to reinvent
yourself as an icon of popular
culture in the same way somebody
like Madonna does or do you see
yourself as slowly evolving? What’s
your opinion of the ‘need’ for
reinvention?
I suppose you could say every time
you change your lip color it’s a kind of
reinvention but it’s just a media term
and it means very little. Artists don’t
reinvent in the way that the likes of
David Bowie did both visually and
musically, that’s proper transmutation.
I think as an artist it’s completely
natural to progress but fans don’t
always like change so you are always
struggling against what you were
or how people originally saw you.
Madonna has kept her crown because
she’s dedicated to success and has a
keen eye for the hottest trend latest
trend or producer. I don’t have her
stamina!
Usually, you think of an interesting title then try and create a story around it, I’ve been joking that I’m
the kind of alien you could bring home to meet your parents! I dunno, I guess people have assumptions
about me being some kind of major weirdo and my idea of myself is quite sane and ordinary and yet I
know I’m slightly odd too. Being a gemini allows me to always been in two minds and I never have to
try to think out of the box, it comes naturally to me. I’m an outsider in spirit and that informs much of
what I feel about the world around me.
What can you tell us about your collaboration with Kinky Roland and the influence he has had
on the tracks here?
Kinky is one of those rare and precious dance producers who is very musical and can work with vocals
and that makes it easy for us to communicate. He has that intrinsic melancholic streak that runs
through most artistic Germans and he gets what I’m about. Kinky produced most of my electro album
‘Yum Yum’ and we have done various remixes together. I have worked with him on and off for about
fifteen years.

There’s a real Jamaican and reggae-dubs on this album – what can you tell us about the overall
sound?
Actually, songs like ‘Turn To Dust’ and ‘Look Pon You’ deal with the homophobia that is sadly rife in
ragga and some reggae but I also have a passion for both genres. I open the album with the line ‘chi
chi man everywhere you turn, you say burn dirty babylon burn’ because homophobic Jamaicans call
gay men ‘chi chi men’ or ‘batty boys’ so I’m sort of reclaiming the terms and saying get over it! You
hear those terms such a lot in ragga tunes but most people don’t notice or realize that these terms are
offensive.

I’m very lucky because I have
always worked and while I’m not as
commercially successful as I was in the ‘80s I do
very well and I’m known outside the UK and that’s
quite handy. My idea of success has changed
anyway and I’d rather be a successful human
being, happy with my life then what I was in the
‘80s. My career in the ‘80s was a happy but very
bizarre accident, I had no idea that little girls and mums would like me. I’m very proud of what I have
achieved but I enjoy what I do in a very different way these days and I realise how lucky I am to make
a living out of doing the thing I love!

There are some amazing messages of hope coming through on this album, nowhere more
apparent than Turn 2 Dust – what can you tell us about this sense of hope, and is it a newfound
vision?
Strangely, I’m the eternal optimist and I guess these songs are written from the point of view that
things can only get better. Lots of people have commented on the positive nature of the songs on
Ordinary Alien but I wasn’t completely conscious until it was pointed out. I’ve had a few dark moments

There’s a world tour touted for the reformation of Culture Club in 2012 to celebrate the 30th
Anniversary of the group – what can you tell us about this tour?
2012 is culture club’s 30 year anniversary and I felt it was an important milestone and worth
celebrating. We are going to record a new album and tour the world and beyond that I can’t tell you
much. We have ideas about what we want to do but plans often change once we get together. It’s the

What’s the thing you loathe the most about the music industry at the moment?
I don’t really loathe these days, I used to be opposed to so many things but even the most purile pop
music just floats by me these days. I think pop music has become a formula, there has always been
manufactured artists back to the 50s and probably beyond that but now it’s out of control. Technology

can now get involved plus the audience is dictating the art-form with all these talent shows.
Mind you, great stuff still happens, Amy Winehouse for example, a rose that grew through the cracks in
the concrete! I wish the industry would invest in real and honest talent instead of recreating the same
ideas over and over.
What’s the thing you love the most about the music industry at the moment?
I love my independent label MN2S because they are getting things done and it’s nice to be back
recording and releasing stuff. I don’t know about loving the industry but I love music and always will.
It’s been my salvation and I thank the heavens for it every single day.

If I can digress, there’s something strange going on
with denim at the moment. If you read the men’s
style press, you’ll hear that double and even triple
denim is in. Well you won’t hear that from this little
black duck, but you will hear that the chambray is
a genuine alternative to this. It will give you that
same rebellious, edgy, masculine look that denim
can, without the train wreck that denim on denim
can so easily become.
Hahaha...
The chambray shirt was originally made for
workmen (hence the term ‘blue collar’) and
usually sports utility details such as front pockets
and top stitching. Modern iterations emphasise
this detailing, with a rougher or distressed edge,
and are being billed by brands such as Ksubi as
‘The Western’.

The RCZ is the best driver’s car that Peugeot has built
for as long as I can remember. From behind the wheel
it feels special because the interior detailing is so
good – with rubberised stereo buttons and dashboard
stitching. The RCZ’s steering is accurate and the
gearbox has a precise shift. Whichever engine you
choose, the RCZ drives like a sports car should, with
lots of grip and predictable, neutral cornering. Both
engines have pace, but deliver it in different ways: the
diesel has loads of low-rev pulling power, whereas the
petrol engine responds to being revved hard - and are
therefore sportier and
more involving.
Sometimes car companies make the mistake of giving
a sports car suspension that’s so hard it rattles the
occupants about. Not so Peugeot with the RCZ. It still
feels firm over poor road surfaces, but it smoothes out
most roads like a decent sporty family hatchback would.
It can get slightly shaky on the motorway, and larger
potholes will send a big thud through the cabin, but the
RCZ balances sporty handling and comfort very well. The
front seats are spacious, while engine, wind and tyre
noise are low.
The Peugeot 3008 blends the best qualities of a hatchback,
a people carrier and a 4x4. This quirky look is a step in
a new direction for Peugeot, as is the interior, which is
beautifully built and feels like a premium product. It’s
practical, too, as the split tailgate is very convenient and the
cabin is well thought out.
Six airbags and electronic stability control are standard. The
3008 scored a maximum five stars overall in the Euro NCAP
crash tests, which is very impressive. The 3008 is extremely
well built and a vast improvement over Peugeots of old, so
we’d expect it to do better than its predecessors.
Safety features are good - the car comes equipped with
all kinds of electronic driver safety aids and four airbags.
Oz Peugeot has brought in two engine choices - the entrylevel 1.6-litre petrol engine with 115kW, and the more
powerful fast and frugal 2.0-litre diesel engine with 120kW.
Despite the size of the 3008 and its tall dimensions, there’s
not much in the way of wind noise and the cabin is pretty
quiet, even at speed. The seats are comfortable, although
they could do with a little more back support. A large
windscreen is standard on all models and it stretches up
over the driver’s head, letting plenty of light into the interior.
Versatility is at the core of the 3008’s appeal. It has a split
tailgate that opens in two parts and the boot itself can
accommodate a decent 512 litres of luggage. The boot
also has a moveable floor with three different positions and
the rear seats split 60/40 and fold down to create a totally
flat floor. Up front, there’s a seemingly endless amount of
storage including big door pockets, a pair of cupholders, a large box in the centre console and
more.
Starting prices are quite affordable for a
vehicle in this segment of the market.
There is a choice of two specs and the
‘lower specced’ XSE, with still enough
bells and whistles to keep you happy,
starts at around $40K.

2.3 billion dollars. For the equivalent of the gross national

Quite the contrary—in Las
Vegas, over the top is just the
starting point, which is why
the place is one of the top
destinations in the world for
LGBT travellers.
The Spa at Encore is a good example; it cost more than
$250 million, and, in looking at the result, was worth every
cent. Much more than the handful of treatment rooms
found in most hotels, this palace of the senses is a true
escape from the outside world, with an enormous relaxation
salon, spabaths the size of swimming pools, and a staff that
combines youthful exuberance with seasoned professional
experience. Men’s and women’s facilities are separated
by a dazzling lobby that introduces the Moroccan theme
carried throughout the Spa’s main rooms as well as its 37
treatment rooms. If you are going to indulge, why not go
all the way; the Encore Escape treatment combines several
types of therapies in something of a sampler of the world’s
favourite treatments. If all the therapists are as dedicated
and talented as Devin, no one goes home unrevitalised.
Do spa treatments make you hungry? At Encore’s
restaurants, the star chefs do not spend their days in a
back office thinking up new dishes; they are in the kitchen
preparing them, with the result that the quality of a meal is
unsurpassed in both culinary preparation and environment
in which they are served. The lobster burgers at Society
Café are beyond divine. For fun, try Switch, so named
because the décor changes all around you automatically
as you eat.
Encore’s food outlets are very well endowed—with art,
that is. Artworks are everywhere in the world of Wynn;
all are part of Mr Wynn’s 300 million-dollar art collection.
Encore’s fab restaurant Botero serves as a showcase for
masterpieces of the Wynn collection as well as a showcase
for the culinary talents of chef Mark LoRusso. Centrepiece
to this sublime space is the large statue of a seated lady by
Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero. This work of art lends
itself to another—the restaurant’s Seated Lady champagne
and rose cocktail. Yes, even the drinks are artfully mixed
and presented at Wynn | Encore.
One of the more recent developments in Las Vegas history
has been the evolution of entertainment in the city. Gone
are the days of crooners at the edge of the casino floor
warbling ditties to the unlistening masses. Siegfried and
Roy no longer perform their magic on their famous white
tigers, but the magic persists at Wynn | Encore, where
theatre wizard Franco Dragone has brought to life Le Rêve,
a mesmerising spectacle presented in the Wynn Theatre,
where wet muscles grab you by the attention and don’t
let go until the show’s over—maybe not even then. Not
only are the performers goodlooking and athletic, they also
know how to swim and do their ‘normal’ acrobatic moves
while soaking wet. Synchronised swimming was never
so sexy...and the ladies of the water give the muscular
gymnasts of the Man Tree a run for their money in the
attention stakes. Wynn Theatre offers voyeur spectators
like me the chance to see behind the scenes as the show
progresses—a really interesting perspective given the
logistics of the performance; stay in the loop and stay dry
in the VIP seats, where the underwater action below the
stage and aerial coordination above it in the catwalks are
both shown on video screens to enhance appreciation of
the performance—as if all those glistening bodies need
further embellishment—with a VIP Indulgence Package.
Champagne and chocolates included.
It comes as no surprise that the pursuit of retail
happiness—even at full price—occupies many hours of the
day for a certain segment of Las Vegas LGBT visitors. Wynn
| Encore complies graciously, accommodating these guests
as it does all others. There is no shortage of shopportunities
to spend money in one of the gorgeous boutiques in the
Encore Esplanade or the Wynn Esplanade, which is home
to Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and numerous other purveyors
of fine merchandise, including Wynn & Company, which
brings the Wynn name into the retail arena with an array
of fine jewellery to rival the other brands. Conveniently, a
room keycard also serves as a charge card for everything
within Encore and Wynn, including retail purchases at any
of the shops. Unfortunately, the boys of Le Rêve are not for
sale—not in the shops, anyway.
