The Shaw Bears will host JCSU during their homecoming contest in Durham County Stadium. J.C. Smith went toe-totoe with No. 16 Winston-Salem State last weekend in Bowman Gray. But the Rams prevailed with a 28-10 homecoming win. Johnson C. Smith is on a twogame skid after the loss to WSSU. After scoring 95 points in the first two games, the Golden Bulls’ offense has only produced 17 points in the last three contests. The defending CIAA Champion Bears just picked up their first win of the season last weekend against Livingstone. Shaw topped the Blue Bears 54-0 and held LC to just 33 yards of total offense. JCSU is looking to show that Livingstone just was not a formidable opponent. Johnson C. Smith can make a statement with a victory over the defending champs and maintain 2nd place in the CIAA South. THE SERIES: This will be the 51st meeting between the two schools dating back to 1928. JCSU has the historical advantage over the Bears 29-19-2 including nine shutouts. J.C. Smith’s largest margin of victory was a 55-2 win in 1967, while their largest loss was a 50-0 shutout in 2009. Before reinstating their program in 2003, the last time the two schools met was in 1978 when JCSU won by a score of 29-20. Shaw has won the last four meetings under Coach Asberry by big margins (2007: 45-21, 2008: 62-35, 2009: 50-0, 2010: 45-7). 2011 CIAA STANDINGS Northern Division Conf. Ovr. Aycock has over 16 years of coaching experience as an assistant and offensive lineman coach. He has brought enthusiasm, passion, tenacity, and a thorough understanding of football from various aspects. “I am determined to make Johnson C. Smith football a powerhouse in the CIAA and in Division II football,” says Aycock. “I will utilize my opportunity to showcase my knowledge of the game through my coaching experiences and develop our student-athletes into better players and people.” As a part of the previous football coaching staff in 1996, Aycock helped the Golden Bulls orchestrate an impressive 7-3 record, the first time in 15 years that the program recorded a winning season. Alfonza Carter Darrell Asberry completed his fifth year at the helm of the Shaw University Football program with his third CIAA championship in four years. Under his leadership, the Bears won the 2007, 2008, and 2010 Championships and earned a spot in both the 2007 and 2010 NCAA Division II playoffs. Asberry was named CIAA Coach of the Year in 2007. Through his five seasons at Shaw University, Asberry has compiled an impressive 37-18 record overall (.673 winning percentage) and a striking 27-9 record (.750) within the CIAA. Asberry assumed the helm of the Shaw program in 2006. In 2007, Shaw University led Division II in total defense. In 2008, Shaw led Division II in rushing defense, total defense, sacks, and tackles for a loss. The team finished third in the nation in pass efficiency defense and third down defense. During Asberry’s tenure, the program has excelled both on the field and off with a high graduation rate, and individual accomplishments being recognized for both performance on the field and in the classroom. In 2009, ten players were named to the CIAA All-Academic team and nine were named to the All-CIAA squad, including the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. In 2010, another nine were named All-CIAA, including the conference’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. In 2008, the Bears led the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in scoring offense, touchdowns scored, total offense, total defense, rushing defense, passing offense, field goals made, kick return touchdowns, third down conversions, and sacks. In 2008, the Bears continued their tradition of strong defense, leading the nation in both passing efficiency defense and tackles for a loss. Offensively, they finished third in the nation in scoring offense. Asberry joined the Bears after serving two years as the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at North Carolina Central University. In his second year at NCCU, he also served as Assistant Head Coach. In 2004, Asberry engineered the top-ranked offense in the CIAA as the Eagles led the conference in total offense, passing offense, and scoring offense. They finished second in rushing offense. Prior to joining the staff at NCCU, Asberry served as Offensive Coordinator, Wide Receivers and Quarterbacks Coach at Albany State (1997-98). He returned to his alma mater, Jackson State University, in 1999 as the Running Backs coach before being promoted to Offensive Coordinator in 2000. In 2001, JSU led NCAA D-1AA in passing yards, and in 2002 they led the nation in total offensive yards. In 2003, he took the position as Offensive Coordinator for Coahoma Community College (Clarksdale, Miss.). The Baton Rouge, LA, native is a 1994 graduate of Jackson State University with a bachelor’s of science degree in Criminal Justice. He lettered two seasons as quarterback, earning the team’s Most Valuable Player award as a senior. After his collegiate career, he played professionally as a wide receiver and quarterback with the Shreveport Pirates of the Canadian Football League (1994-95) and as a wide receiver with the Amsterdam Admirals of the World League of American Football (1995-96). Asberry is the proud father of two daughters, Arabria and Armarni, and one son, Armariyan. versus Shaw Saturday, October 8, 2011 | 1:00 pm ET Golden Bull Glimspe WILLIAM TRIMBLE NAMED CIAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK FOR WEEK SIX Oct. 3, 2011 Hampton, VA – Johnson C. Smith University freshman receiver William Trimble (Fayetteville, GA) has been recognized by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) as the Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 1, 2011. This is a first time honor for Trimble and the third time this season a JCSU student-athlete has earned the weekly rookie honor. On the other two occasions, freshman quarterback Keahn Wallace received the award. Trimble had a huge, momentum swaying kick return for a touchdown in the loss to No. 16 Winston-Salem State. Following an interception returned for a score, Trimble took the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a JCSU touchdown. He led the team in all-purpose yardage and scored the Golden Bulls’ only TD. He concluded the day with three returns for 117 yards against WSSU. Trimble has now returned an 88 yard kickoff and a 70 yard punt for touchdowns halfway through his freshman season. The Golden Bulls will attempt to get back to their winning ways this weekend against Shaw University. JCSU will square off with the Bears on Saturday, October 8th at 1:00 p.m. Johnson C. Smith currently stands at 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA. Shaw is 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference. J.C. Smith will be looking to hold onto their second place position in the Southern Division. Smith vs Winston-Salem State (Oct 01, 2011 at Winston-Salem, NC) Winston-Salem, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football team suffered a 28-10 loss against Winston-Salem State University on Saturday afternoon inside a filled to capacity Bowman Gray Stadium. JCSU moves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA, while the Rams improve to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Despite facing the 21st ranked team in the country (AFCA poll), JCSU appeared to match up well with the Rams. WinstonSalem is the lone unbeaten team in the CIAA and the Southern Division, averaging 50 points per game. The Golden Bulls’ defense forced three turnovers and held WSSU to just one touchdown per quarter. Winston-Salem produced 401 yards of total offense (255 rushing, 146 passing); mostly with battering ram Nicholas Cooper. Cooper netted 203 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns. Rams’ QB Kameron Smith passed for 146 yards completing 19of-34 attempts with a touchdown and an interception. Senior defensive back Darius Johnson (Atlanta, GA) made his presence felt during the Rams’ homecoming contest. Johnson caught the only interception and recorded six tackles (five solo). Linebackers Perrin Carr (Brandywine, MD) and Michael Coats (Greenwood, SC) each recovered a fumble to get the WSSU offense off the field. JCSU trailed 14-3 in the third quarter when the Rowe interception took place. Down 21-3 with a little under 12 minutes remaining in the third, the Golden Bulls chances were bleak. On the kickoff after the INT return, freshman receiver William Trimble (Fayetteville, GA) sprinted 88 yards to the house. The touchdown return by Trimble shifted momentum in the stadium and drew the Golden Bulls closer to a comeback (21-10). J.C. Smith did not score an offensive TD in this game. In fact, the return by Trimble was the only Golden Bulls’ touchdown of the afternoon. Wallace concluded the day passing for 226 yards off 25-of-52 passes completed. He also had a team-high 20 yards on the ground on 17 attempts. Senior receiver Rico Poole (Atlanta, GA) was the top target with 103 yards and eight catches. versus Shaw Saturday, October 8, 2011 | 1:00 pm ET Week Four Recap JCSU FOOTBALL SET BACK BY PENALTIES IN 35-7 LOSS AGAINST DAVIDSON September 24, 2011 (Week 4) Davidson, NC – The Johnson C. But it was actually the JCSU offense that failed to click. J.C. Smith entered this contest averaging 460 yards of offense and 37.7 points per game (second only to Winston-Salem State in the CIAA). However, the Golden Bulls only produced 266 yards of offense against Davidson. This is also the second straight week that JCSU has scored just seven points. Johnson C. Smith struck first with a touchdown toss late in the first quarter. Freshman quarterback and reigning CIAA Rookie of the Week Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) went 4-of-5 on a seven play, 65 yards drive to score. Wallace connected with sophomore receiver Daniel Taylor (Columbia, SC) on a 15 yard touchdown reception in the right corner of the end zone. The score remained 7-0 in favor of Johnson C. Smith until the 12:08 mark of the second quarter. The Wildcats tied the score on a 66 yard TD reception from Jonathon Carkhuff to Tim Hines. Carkhuff threw another touchdown reception before the end of the half. He found Nick Orobello on a fade route to put Davidson ahead 14-7 with 4:27 on the clock. William Rudd received a lot of playing time in the first half for Virginia State. Fortunately for JCSU, Mr. Rudd is the Virginia State punter. Rudd came out to punt on three of the first four Trojans offensive drives. On the first drive, Rudd had a 39 yard field goal attempt blocked. The first quarter ended without a score for either team. JCSU finally put together a nine play, 81-yard scoring drive in the second quarter. After driving the team to the VSU seven; freshman quarterback Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) connected with sophomore receiver Avius Capers (Charlotte, NC) on a fade route to the left for the touchdown. Capers’ touchdown would be the only score of the first half. J. C. Smith started the second half with the rock, but their drive concluded with a turnover. On third and five, Wallace had a pass intercepted by Sean Smith at the JCSU 46 yard line. VSU would get into the end zone on their next offensive possession. Antwain Lyde scored a TD on a three yard carry for the Trojans. Virginia State had to use 12 plays to go 46 yards for that score. The contest remained tied 7-7 apiece heading into the fourth quarter. Virginia State had an opportunity to put more points on the board at the 8:41 mark. Rudd attempted a 32 yard field goal, but it sailed wide left. Neither team could seem to find their rhythm late in the game; or at least rhythm enough to finish with a score. Worth) checked-in to punt for JCSU with less than three minutes to play. To start the drive, Jarred Battle found Timothy Paulk on a slant route that went 63 yards to the JCSU eight yard line. Paulk broke a tackle and spirited from the right side of the field nearly the goal line on the left. Senior defensive back Lamarr Person (Atlanta, GA) saved the touchdown by not giving up on the play and taking down the Paulk. After two rushing attempts, VSU faced a third and goal on the Golden Bull one yard line. Lyde bobbled a direct snap leaving a free ball on the ground. Junior defensive back Lance Harris (Encino, CA) scooped up the loose ball and returned the fumble 94 yards for the touchdown. VSU began their final drive with 46 seconds remaining on the clock. The game was sealed on an interception by freshman defensive back Charles Frantz (Miami, FL). Reigning CIAA Offensive Back and Rookie of the Week Keahn Wallace finished with 191 yards off 19-of-31 passing. He had one touchdown in the air, two interceptions, and 77 yards rushing. Defense was really the story for this Johnson C. Smith victory. Junior linebacker Michael Coats (Greenwood, SC) swarmed to the ball for five solo tackles, five assists, and a pass break-up. Sophomore safety Gabriel Franklin (Casselberry, FL) got in on six assists and four solo tackles with a breakup. Aside from the game-winning 94 yard fumble return, Harris had three solo tackles. The Golden Bulls have entered a new page of history into their program’s vault with this win. J.C. Smith last won two of their first three games during the 2006 season under then head coach, Daryl McNeill. JCSU has not won their first CIAA contest of the season since 1998; then head coach Bill Davis topped Bowie State 14-12. versus Shaw Saturday, October 8, 2011 | 1:00 pm ET Week Two Recap GOLDEN BULLS FOOTBALL ALLOWS BREVARD TO STEAL A 38-35 OVERTIME VICTORY September 10, 2011 (Week 2) Quickie Statistics (Final) Johnson C. Smith vs Brevard (Sep 10, 2011 at Brevard, N.C.) Boiling Springs, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football team fell short 38-35 in an overtime tug of war with Brevard College on Saturday afternoon inside Brevard Memorial Stadium. JCSU moves to 1-1 in the standings as well as the Tornadoes with the victory at home. JCSU won the coin toss and chose to defer until the second half. Both teams failed to score on their initial offensive possessions. On the second drive attempt by Brevard’s offense, the Golden Bulls forced a turnover. Senior linebacker Quinton Toomer (Atlanta, GA) collided with the ball carrier to force and recover a fumble on the BC eight yard line. Freshman quarterback Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) wasted no time finding senior receiver Nick Mata (Tampa, FL) for a seven yard touchdown pass. The drive only lasted two plays and took 48 seconds. Defense held Brevard on their third possession, but JCSU committed a turnover on offense. Wallace threw his first interception of his collegiate career to Donovan Barker inside enemy territory. Brevard started their drive from their own 24 yard line and scored a TD in seven plays. Tydrell Wright took a reverse up the right side for a 32 yard touchdown run. The score remained tied 7-7 heading into the second quarter. With the first play in the second quarter, Derek Church broke free up the middle for a 64 yard gain for Brevard. The rush put the Tornadoes in position to score off a two yard QB keeper from Aaron Reese. Johnson C. Smith had troubles smoothly moving the ball on their next two possessions. Brevard eventually scored again off a 40 touchdown reception to go ahead 21-7 with 3:11 remaining before halftime. The Golden Bulls got back into sync on the next drive, well sort of. Wallace took a sack, followed by an incomplete pass, and then a 66 yard touchdown launch to sophomore Daniel Taylor (Columbia, SC). It took JCSU 47 seconds to run those three plays and score. Sophomore safety Gabriel Franklin (Casselberry, FL) recaptured the ball for the offense with an interception and 26 yard return to the BC 16. Wallace connected with junior running back Dedrick Anderson (Winston-Salem, NC) on a 10 yard outlet pass for the touchdown. The Tornadoes responded with a nine play, 60 yard drive to cross the goal line. Jack Woerner tied the game again at 28-28 off a two yard run with 3:44 left in the third. Wallace operated on the Brevard defense like a surgeon on the next offensive possession. After 10 plays and 89 yards, the Golden Bulls were putting another touchdown on the scoreboard. On the drive, Wallace found sophomore receiver Avius Capers (Charlotte, NC) with a 19-yard and 27-yard pass completion. Wallace accounted for the score on a seven yard rush. Brevard trailed 35-28 going into the fourth quarter. BC did draw even (35-35) after an 11 play drive that lasted nearly six minutes. JCSU started their final drive in regulation at their own 16 with 3:15 remaining. After nine plays, the Golden Bulls had moved the ball to the Brevard 23. JCSU used their last timeout with 24 seconds on the clock, following the break; Wallace was sacked for a loss of one. With time winding down, the field goal unit rushed onto the field for a final attempt. Senior place kicker Julius Wright (Ft. Worth, TX) missed the 40 yarder wide right as time expired. JCSU started off the extra frame with possession, but turned the ball over on third down with an interception. Brevard drove the ball to the one yard line on their possession, then kicked a 18 yard field goal for a 38-35 victory in overtime. This is the second consecutive season that this matchup has been settled by four points or less (25-21 Brevard in 2010). Despite three interceptions, Wallace had another tremendous performance as a young signal caller. He threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns off 25-of-42 passing along with 79 yards and two TDs on the ground. Taylor was the top target with seven catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. Mata and Anderson each caught five balls for 50+ yards and a touchdown. The offense produced over 400 yards (443 vs. Brevard / 630 vs. West Virginia State) for the second consecutive game. Unfortunately, the defense allowed over 400 yards in back to back weeks also (405 – Brevard / 499 – West Virginia State). Franklin was the defensive standout with five solo tackles and seven assists with the team’s only interception. versus Shaw Saturday, October 8, 2011 | 1:00 pm ET Week One Recap GOLDEN BULLS FOOTBALL BUST OPEN 2011 SEASON WITH 64-27 WIN OVER WEST VA STATE September 3, 2011 (Week 1) Quickie Statistics (Final) West Virginia State vs Johnson C. Smith (Sep 03, 2011 at Charlotte, NC) Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football ignited with a 64-27 season opener win against West Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon inside the Irwin Belk Complex. J.C. Smith is 1-0 for the first time since their 24-0 season opening win over Edward Waters in 2007; prior to the coaching leadership from Steven Aycock. Believe it or not, this game started off a little shaky for the Golden Bulls. With just two plays, the Yellow Jackets had put a touchdown on the scoreboard. After a rush for no gain, Ricky Phillips connected with Ervin Kent for a 74 yard touchdown reception for a 7-0 WVSU lead. It would be the last time Johnson C. Smith trailed in the game. The Golden Bulls did not flinch after the opposition’s score; they calmly put together a drive down the field with three first downs. This drive was led and capped off by freshman quarterback Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) with a seven yard TD pass to sophomore receiver Avius Capers (Charlotte, NC). Senior defensive tackle Rashad Dukes (Charlotte, NC) put in some work with two tackles on a three and out on the next WVSU possession. Yet another freshman came up big, this time receiver William (B.J.) Trimble (Fayetteville, GA) returned a punt 70 yards to the house for a 14-7 JCSU advantage. West Virginia State managed to produce another score on the following drive off a 25 yard touchdown rush from LeFloyd Phillip. Wallace completed a 55 yard touchdown reception to sophomore Daniel Taylor (West Columbia, SC), but the extra point attempt failed resulting in a 20-14 JCSU lead. The Golden Bulls forced another three and out on defense; then Wallace marched the offense down the field. Junior running back Dedrick Anderson (Winston-Salem, NC) gained 45 yards on the drive including a 27 yard sprint for a touchdown. Junior linebacker Michael Coats (Greenwood, SC) chased down ball carriers with four tackles (2 solo, 4 asts) and an interception. “It feels good to start the season like this, these guys came onto the field ready to win and they played that way throughout,” said head coach Steven Aycock. “The credit goes to my team for their execution and my entire coaching staff for preparing these guys for a victory. Nationally ranked # 16 Winston-Salem State looks like they may run away with the Southern Division, but the Rams have to remain focused. They were undefeated and riding high this time last season when their championship hopes were derailed by late season losses to Saint Augustine’s and Shaw. The Northern Division is still up for grabs. With as many as four teams still in contention, it’s still anybody’s race. But the next three weeks should tell the tale. With crucial matchups between Northern Division frontrunners on deck, the division should start to sort itself out soon. Game of the Week… Elizabeth City State Vikings (3-2, 1-1) at Virginia Union Panthers (4-2, 2-1) The Vikings have played one of the toughest schedules in the league. They opened the season by taking 3rd ranked Delta State to overtime before falling 28-21. They then gave #16 Winston-Salem State all they could handle before dropping a 22-17 decision. ECSU has reeled off three straight wins since their 0-2 start and are coming off a bye last week. The week off couldn’t have come at a better time for the Vikings. This week they embark on a three-week stretch, with games against Virginia Union, Virginia State and Bowie State, that may very well decide the Northern Division championship. ECSU is solid on both sides of the football, averaging 31.4 points a game while allowing just 19.8. After a slow start, tailback Daronte McNeill appears to be rounding into midseason form, averaging over 150 yards rushing in his last two games. Linebacker Dewitt Dixon is the leading tackler on a defense that yields just over 275 yards a game. The Panthers have been on an offensive tear of late, averaging 37.5 points over their last two games. The catalyst behind the spike in point production has been the play of senior quarterback Cheston Hickman, who has passed for 581 yards and four touchdowns in that two-game span. Hickman’s passing prowess has kept teams from loading up the box to stop the running game. The biggest benefactor of that move has been tailback Jerrell Washington who’s averaging 126.5 yards and has scored five touchdowns in his last two outings. The winner of this game stays in the hunt for the Northern Division title, while the loser may be on the outside looking in on the battle for the crown. This is Homecoming for the Panthers. Kickoff is 1:00 pm at Hovey Field. Bowie State Bulldogs (3-2, 2-2) at Fairmont State Fighting Falcons (4-1) After back-to-back conference losses to Virginia Union and Virginia State, the Bulldogs travel to West Virginia to take on a tough Fairmont State team. Although this game is not Homecoming, it is a Homecoming for Bowie State Offensive Coordinator Jason Woodman as he goes home to take on his alma mater. Woodman who grew up in nearby Farmington, West Virginia, is a 2002 graduate of Fairmont State. The Fighting Falcons of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference enter the game with a 4-1 record and winners of their last two. This is an intriguing non-conference matchup. From a statistical standpoint, the two teams are mirror images of each other. Bowie State averages 30.0 points a game, while Fairmont State is scoring 33.2 points. Defensively, the Bulldogs hold opponents to 19.0 points a game while the Fighting Falcons give up 18.6. Although the Bulldogs have dropped two decisive division games in successive weeks, there’s still a lot of football left to be played. A win this week could be a big confidence booster as the Bulldogs head into the remainder of their conference schedule. Game time is 7:00 pm Thursday at FSU’s Duvall-Rosier Field. Chowan Hawks (0-3, 1-4) at Lincoln Lions (1-2, 1-4) This game features a matchup of two of the newer members of the CIAA and will showcase two of the top young signal callers in the league. Lincoln freshman quarterback Doug Cook leads the league in passing yards per game, averaging 261 yards a game. Cook has also thrown seven touchdowns. Calling signals for Chowan will be sophomore Cam Stover, who is third in the league at 225.5 yards a game. Stover has thrown 10 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Catching passes from these two young guns are the CIAA’s three leading receivers in Lincoln’s Phillip Juste-Jean (37 catches/357 yards/2 TDs) and Chowan’s Kevin Hodrick (31 catches/361 yards/5 TDs) and Robert Holland (27 catches/431 yards/7 TDs). With all the offensive stars on the field, look for this to be a shootout. Lincoln’s Homecoming kicks off at 1:00 pm. Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (2-3, 1-1) at Shaw Bears (1-4, 1-1) Defending CIAA Champion Shaw picked up their first win of the season last week, outgaining Livingstone 465-33 en route to a dominant 54-0 victory. With a 1-1 conference record, the Bears are still in contention for the Southern Division title but will likely have to win out to have any hope of defending their CIAA title. The much improved Golden Bulls have turned out to be a more formidable foe than Shaw anticipated when they chose them as their Homecoming opponent. The Bulls average 26 points and 386 yards a game and knocked off Northern Division co-leader Virginia State three weeks ago. Both teams are chasing Southern division-leading Winston-Salem State and another conference loss would likely eliminate the loser from contention. Homecoming kicks off at 1:00 pm at Durham County Stadium. Livingstone Blue Bears (1-4, 0-3) at Edward Waters Tigers (1-3) The Blue Bears, fresh off a 54-0 loss to Shaw, travel to Jacksonville, Florida looking for their second win of the season. The two teams both posted their only win of the season over the first year program from Virginia University of Lynchburg. Livingstone beat the Dragons 24-21 in overtime on September 24th, while Edward Waters picked up a 29-21 win on September 10th. Game time is 1:00 pm in Jacksonville. Virginia State Trojans (3-2, 2-1) at Fayetteville State Broncos (1-4, 1-1) Fayetteville State finally got into the “W” column when kicker Austin Turner booted a 34-yard field goal to give the Broncos a 31-28 overtime win over Saint Augustine’s. Tailback Colon Bailey scored two touchdowns and the Broncos’ defense held Saint Aug to 194 yards of offense to help pull out the win. The Broncos will need a similar performance to give returning alumni a Homecoming victory over the Trojans. Virginia State is riding high after an emotional 28-21 overtime win over Bowie State. The Trojans trailed by a touchdown with less than a minute left in the game before rallying for the win and a share of the lead in the tight Northern Division. In addition to it being Homecoming, this is also the CIAA TV Game of the Week. Kickoff is 6:00 pm at Luther “Nick” Gerald Stadium. #16 Winston-Salem State Rams (5-0, 4-0) at Saint Augustine’s Falcons (2-3, 1-2) The 16th ranked Rams are the hottest team in the league and have convincingly vanquished all challengers. Last week the Rams dispatched Johnson C. Smith in workmanlike fashion, using Nicholas Cooper’s 203 rushing yards to wear down the pesky Golden Bulls and get away with a 28-10 win. The Rams’ point production is down slightly from previous weeks, but they still average 45.6 points a game, good enough for 6th in Division II. Cooper is ranked third nationally, averaging 161 yards a game. Up next for the Rams are the mercurial Saint Augustine’s Falcons. Last week in a 31-28 overtime loss to Fayetteville State, the Falcons’ offensive unit struggled mightily against a FSU defense that allows over 400 yards a game. The Falcons finished with a paltry 194 total yards and five turnovers. With the offense misfiring, Saint Augustine’s used its defense to stay in the game, getting three touchdowns from the unit. The Rams’ league-leading defense will present a much more formidable challenge for a Saint Augustine’s team that’s 11th in the conference in total offense, but it’s unlikely the Rams will take the Falcons lightly. Last season WSSU came into this game undefeated and ranked in the national polls only to see the Falcons jump out to a 30-7 halftime lead and hold on for a 40-35 win that all but ended the Rams title hopes. The game is set for 1:30 pm at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium on the campus of North Carolina Central.
