About us/How to use this guidebook
Welcome to the Youth Volunteer Guidebook. As the leading source for
volunteer service in the region, Volunteer New York is focused on making
service easy and fun. As a part of this effort the Youth Volunteer Guidebook
was created to make finding volunteer opportunities appropriate for youth,
families and youth groups.
In this guidebook, you will find a calendar of nonprofit events, a listing of youth
leadership programs and a listing of all of the nonprofit organizations in the
region that work with youth. There are a lot of featured nonprofits and events.
Make sure you use the table of contents and nonprofit index to find the right
organization for you.
Online users: The guidebook can be used digitally or as a printed
manual. Users accessing this guidebook via a computer, tablet or smart
phone will be able to access hotlinks built into the text (try this). These links
will either bring you to bookmarks within the guidebook or to a related section
on our website.
Printed Users: Users accessing this document as a printed guide can
still use the guidebook in conjunction with the website. All of the organizations
can be found by using the browse organizations page on our website. This list
highlights all of the nonprofit organizations that work with us. This list can also
be sorted by their locations and the impact areas they serve. Alternatively, if
you do not have access to a computer, you can call us at (914) 948-4452.
You can also find more detail on how to use this guidebook on page 16 and
how to use our website on pages 7-8.
About Us
Volunteer New York is a one-stop resource for all things volunteer. For
over 60 years, we have encouraged adults to serve, youth to build character,
families to bond, young professionals to excel as leaders, mature adults to
stay engaged and businesses to address community needs.
As the regional volunteer center for the Mid-Hudson Valley, we help
individuals across Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster
and Sullivan counties find meaningful service opportunities. Through our
online database located at www.volunteernewyork.org as well as through our
referral staff, we match volunteers to meaningful opportunities every day. We
also hold two service events during the year as well as the largest celebration
of volunteers in the area, The Volunteer Spirit Awards.
We also provide support for schools, youth groups, businesses and families
who are looking for service opportunities. If you are a part of a team of
volunteers looking to make an impact in your community we are here to help
facilitate your service project.

Volunteering as a Family
One of the largest and fastest growing trends in volunteerism is family
volunteering. Volunteering as a family is a great way to help your local
community and to strengthen family bonds through cooperative work.
In this guidebook there are a couple of sections that can help you find a
project for your family:

The Nonprofit Index highlights agencies that have service projects
appropriate for families. The index also features a few volunteer
opportunities that require chaperones - perfect for families looking to
serve together.

One-Day Volunteer Opportunities are highlighted in our special
event calendar. Many of these projects feature volunteer roles and
responsibilities that can be easily adopted by a family.

National/Local Service Events feature many youth/family friendly
service project as short-term activities.

The Nonprofit Wish List highlights the materials that many
organizations need to fulfill their missions. A family can work together to
develop a drive to collect these resources.
Still looking for ideas? Here’s a few examples:

Get Outdoors by volunteering at a local park or environmental
center. Planting, weeding and trash pickup are all easy activities that
significantly help the local environment.
(see: Environment)

Serve as a foster family for a puppy or kitten. Many animals need
families who can provide a temporary home before they can be adopted.
This includes guide and therapy dogs who start their training in a
volunteer’s home.
(see: Animals)

Lead your community by organizing a food or material drive. Many
nonprofit organizations need support ranging from nonperishable food to
used newspapers for puppies. Organizing a drive is an easy project that
a family can adopt.
(see: Nonprofit Wish List)

Adopt-A-Family The hardest part of a natural disaster is the
recovery. Many families find themselves without necessities such as
food and clothing. Your family can pledge to support a family in need by
pledging to collect resources for communities recovering from disasters.
(See: Families)
You can always see an up-to-date list of volunteer opportunities on our
website. You can also speak with a volunteer referral specialist by
calling us at (914) 948-4452.

Using the Database
HandsOn Connect is the database system used by Volunteer New York! to publish and manage
service projects. Here you can easily find service projects based off of your skills, interests and
availability. The database has a lot of tools available for volunteers but it can be very easy to miss
some of these functions. These functions can make it easy to filter through the hundreds of service
projects to find the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. Here’s a basic layout of the searchable database and what each of the functions means.

11. Save & Share: Logged in users can use this to save a link to search results
12
13
14
12. When Are You Available?: Allows users to filter volunteer opportunities
by the weekdays and times of the day they are available.

National Service Events
National Volunteer Service Week (April)
National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate people doing extraordinary
things through service. Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week focuses national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism and service as an integral aspect of our civic leadership. The week draws the support and endorsement of the President and Congress, governors, mayors
and municipal leaders, as well as corporate and community groups across
the country.
Make-A-Difference Day (October)
Make A Difference Day is a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.
Millions of volunteers from around the world will unite in a common mission

community.

Nonprofit Wish List
Do you want to collect items that could benefit a good cause? Many organizations have “wish lists”
of items they could use. You can run a gift drive during the holidays or collect blankets for dogs and
cats at a shelter. Below is a short list of needed items and agencies who can use them. If you don’t
see your favorite charity here, just call them up and ask if they have a wish list for in-kind donations.
If you have an item you wish to donate (i.e. computer, furniture, clothes) and do not know where to
go, you can call United Way’s Gift-In-Kind program, 914-997-6700. United Way will distribute a
description of the item you have to several hundred nonprofit agencies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I want to volunteer but I don’t know where
to start.
A: The most important thing to do before
volunteering is to consider yourself. Two
important questions you should ask yourself is
“what are your interests” and “do you have any
skills”. Answering these questions can help
identify the type of agency you would be happiest
working for. For example if you are a musician
and have an interest in working with children,
Heartsong Inc, a nonprofit that provides free
music lessons for children would be a perfect
match for you. Finding the best role for yourself
requires a bit of creativity and introspection. If you
need help, you can always call us at (914) 9484452
Q: I want to volunteer but I’m too young.
A: Most nonprofit agencies are willing to
accept volunteers who are chaperoned by an
adult. If you are under an agency’s age
requirements see if you can pair up with an adult
to serve.
called me.
A: Many volunteer coordinators are
responsible for multiple programs on top of
overseeing the volunteers at their agency. Not
being called back is not a sign of disinterest.
Sometimes you need to be persistent in order to
start a dialogue. You also might be reaching out
to a staff member who is no longer with that
agency. If you don’t get a call back, try calling the
agency’s general number and asking for their
volunteer coordinator.
Q: The nonprofit organization that I want to
work for does not have an open volunteer job.
Can I still call them?
A: Yes you can. Some nonprofit agencies are
willing to develop a role around your skills and
interests. However, before you reach out directly
to the agency make sure you know your goals
and why you chose that agency in particular.
Q: I want to volunteer during the holidays but
all of the agencies I have called are full. What
