Remember the fertilizer ratio formula: NITROGEN – PHOSPHORUS – POTASSIUM. • Location is key to a successful food plot. Because deer (especially bucks) prefer to eat in areas close to cover, plant your food plot in areas that border cover or as close to cover as possible. • Plant in an area that contains soil that is appropriate for the food plot product that you are growing. (See individual food plot profiles to identify appropriate soil type.) Size: • Minimum — where possible, a food plot should be at least 1/4 acre in size to help avoid overgrazing. 1 acre = 43,560 sq. ft. (roughly the size of a football field). Number: • The typical number of food plots should equal 2% — 6% of the land available to you. Additional food plots may be needed if deer population is particularly high in your area. Shape: Mowing: Mowing can stimulate new growth of a perennial food plot as well as help in weed control. Mowing is best done with a rotary type mower. THE FOLLOWING MOWING RECOMMENDATIONS ARE FOR PERENNIAL FOOD PLOTS ONLY: • Mowing times can vary but normally, mowing is done several times in the spring and again in late summer or early fall. • Generally speaking, you should mow when your food plot reaches 12” – 16”. • You should never mow lower than 4” – 6” from the ground. • Do not mow when excessively hot or dry. • If possible, the shape of food plots should be more rectangular and narrow in shape than square and wide. This will cause the food plot to naturally border more with cover. Again, put food plots as close to heavy cover as possible. Weed Control: Mowing several times per year (see mowing section) will help prevent weeds from going to seed and also stimulates growth of the food plot. Soil Test: Herbicides: The Whitetail Institute offers herbicides that can be used on many Imperial perennial food plots. • A soil test is one of the most important steps in planting a food plot. A soil test will tell you the condition of your soil and how much lime and fertilizer your soil needs to maximize food plot forage growth. See section on soil testing in selection section or back of product bag. Follow Planting Directions: • Directions for planting the food plot product you choose can be found on the back of each bag or refer to the planting chart presented here. Following these directions will help ensure maximum food plot success. When to Plant: • In most cases, food plot products can be planted in either spring or fall. Planting times specific to your area can be found in the section on planting times in this guide or on the back of each product bag. Scientific research equals results! And, that’s what sets us apart from any other food plot company in the world! — The Whitetail Institute of North America Whitetail Institute of North America fOOD PLOT PLANTING TIPS Soil Testing: Soil testing is one of the most vital first steps in developing a successful food plot. A soil test will tell you soil characteristics such as pH level and fertility and give you specific instructions on what needs to be added to the soil for maximum performance. b. Soil pH: A soil pH test tells you how acidic or alkaline your soil is. The pH scale runs from 1–14 with 7 being neutral. Most plants perform best in neutral pH ranging from 6.5 – 7.0. For various reasons, most soils tend to be acidic in nature and require time to neutralize the soil. We recommend buying agricultural lime in bulk. Bulk lime is very inexpensive, average pricing ranging from $15.00 to $30.00 per ton delivered in most cases. Soil Fertility: Most soils have been depleted of vital nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium due to farming practices and natural vegetation growing on the land. A soil test will tell you how much and what type fertilizer to use. How to Take a Soil Test: Soil testing is a simple procedure. You will need a bucket, probe, shovel or spade and a plastic baggy or soil test bag. 1. Using the probe, shovel or spade, take 10 – 12 samples of soil from your field. Make sure to get at least the top 4 – 6 inches of soil as you will be turning over at least this much soil when you disc. 2. Put all of the samples in the bucket and mix them together to get a representative sample. 3. Put a sample of the mixture in the baggy or soil test bag. 4. The sample can be tested by many places including your soil conservation office, extension office, state universities, ag stores or by the Whitetail Institute. The cost of testing each sample should range from $6.00 to $15.00. How to Plant Imperial Whitetail Clover, Alfa-Rack PLUS, Extreme, Chicory PLUS, Chic Magnet, Winter-Greens, Double-Cross, Edge and Tall Tine Tubers: 1. Take a soil test. 2. Plow, till or disc the ground to break-up the seed bed. 3. Apply appropriate amount of lime and fertilizer and disc these to incorporate them with the soil. 4. Go over the food plot using a cultipacker, lawn roller or weighted drag to compact the soil. 5. Broadcast the seed according to the seeding recommendations found on the back of the bag. 6. Seed depth is critical. Seed should stay within the top 1/8 inch of soil. When you broadcast the seed, notice how far your boots sink into the soil. a. If your boots are sinking into the soil more than 1 inch, then you have a soft seed bed. If you have a soft seed bed, after broadcasting seed, no additional steps should be c. done. Simply broadcast the seed and walk away. When the next rain comes, the seed will be driven into the ground. If your boots do not sink into the ground more than an inch, then you have a firm seed bed. After broadcasting, go back over the food plot with the cultipacker or heavy roller to push the seed slightly to insure good seed to soil contact. DO NOT DISC THE SEED. How to Plant No-Plow, BowStand, Secret Spot and Secret Spot XL: If you are able to use tillage equipment, follow the same steps for planting Imperial Whitetail Clover. Planting with Limited or No Tillage Equipment: 1. Remove vegetation and debris from food plot by spraying with a weed and grass-killing herbicide such as 41% glysophate, weed-eating, mowing, raking or whatever method needed to get to the bare soil. 2. “Scratch” the soil by using a drag such as a harrow, fence-type drag or by using a hand rake. 3. Apply appropriate lime and fertilizer as specified on the back of bag you are planting. 4. Broadcast seed. 5. Go back over the food plot with the drag to give you good seed to soil contact. How to Plant Imperial PowerPlant, Pure Attraction and Forage Oats Plus: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Take a soil test. Plow, till or disc the ground to break-up the seed bed. Apply appropriate lime and fertilizer. Lightly disc in or till lime and/or fertilizer. Broadcast seed. Lightly harrow or disc seed into soil. PowerPlant should be planted 1/2 – 1-inch deep for best results. Pure Attraction should be covered in a thin layer of loose soil no more than 1/4-inch deep. Note: Planting time is critical for PowerPlant. Only plant when the last threat of frost has passed. Soil temperatures need to be 65º F or higher for proper germination to occur. Do not plant in wet soil. WhITETAIL INSTITUTE Of NORTh AMERICA A Remarkable Difference… This antler is from a buck with no prior mineral or vitamin supplementation. Could minerals have made a difference? See for yourself. …In JUST ONE YEAR! ∆ ≈ This antler is from the same buck the next year after the use of Whitetail Institute Mineral/Vitamin Supplements. An obvious difference can be realized in a short period of time. Why Use Minerals and Vitamins: As you can see above, a mineral and vitamin supplementation program can produce amazing results. • Antlers are bone and require huge amounts of minerals and vitamins to produce. • Hardened antlers are 55% mineral. • Does require large amounts of minerals and vitamins for lactation and pregnancy. Fawns and yearlings need high amounts of minerals to build their skeletal system. • Most soils are either naturally low in minerals or have been depleted of minerals after years of vegetation taking them out of the soil. • Mineral content of the soil can be directly related to the probability of big-antlered bucks being in the area.
