the county. You can find your farmer and maintain
that connection. Food is fresh off the farm and provides the most nutrition for your buck,” he says.
The variety of produce offered, as they are seasonally available, includes kale, tomatoes, cucumbers,
peppers, eggplant, cabbage, potatoes, string beans,
and zucchini. New for upcoming markets is squash.
Abenaki Springs Farm is at the market on Tuesdays
and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Summer Farmers’ Market of Keene runs

Bruce Bickford
Bruce Bickford, owner of Abenaki Springs Farm,
in Walpole, has been farming for over 20 years and
has been a Farmers’ Market of Keene vendor for 14
years. He considers the market an extension of the
farm. The farm features 11 acres and four greenhouses
to ensure production through three seasons.
At the market, he provides a wide variety of fresh
produce that is just hours to minutes old. “The farmers’ market is a convenient spot for those wanting
to purchase from farms instead of driving all over
Beets and carrots can be packed in
very dry sand or slightly wet wood
chips. Cut off their tops leaving about
an inch. Lay them in the sun for 20 minutes, then flip them over for another 20
minutes. Do not wash. Brush lightly to
remove excess dirt. Place a half-inch of
wood chips or sand on the bottom of a
five gallon bucket. Arrange the beets or
carrots on this layer, not touching one
another. Cover with chips or sand and
repeat. Repeat until the bucket is full
ending with a layer of sand or chips.
Cover and into the root cellar it goes.
If done properly, beets and carrots

toes genetically know that they should
be planted in April so that’s when they
sprout. If you take some time to prepare
some edibles now, winter will be a lot
less daunting. And, our farmers will be
able to keep on doing what they are so
wonderfully doing.
Celeste and Bob Longacre have been
living sustainably for almost 40 years.
Her book, “Celeste’s Garden Delights”
details exactly how to do this and is
available at many local businesses.
Celeste is also looking for venues to do
kvass demos.
