Resource List p. 24 1 Goals and Objectives Freaky Facts is a project designed to motivate middle school students in an EBD (emotional and behavioral disabilities) center to read informational text through the utilization of engaging print materials and online resources. Reading materials are geared to the interests of the students including but not limited to topics such as: sports, animals, music, the supernatural, creatures, food, and include bizarre and unusual facts. Students build critical thinking skills at their developmental level through out the research phase of the project and utilize technology in a project based learning activity. Objectives: Student will use the table of contents and indexes of non-fiction books to find specific information. Student will utilize online resources to access information. Students will take notes using key words. Students will use a research process model to gather information Students will use a word processing program to create a bibliography. Students will to use digital tools to create a final presentation. Students will share their presentations with their peers. Information Literacy Standards • 1.2: Recognizes that accurate and comprehensive information is the basis for intelligent decision-making. • 2.4: Selects information appropriate to the problem or question at hand. • 3.2: Integrates new information into one’s own knowledge. • 3.3: Applies information in critical thinking and problem solving. • 5.2: Derives meaning from information presented creatively in a variety of formats (i.e., written, spoken, visual). 4 Course Outline In the language arts classroom the teacher presents the Freaky Facts project to the students. Students brainstorm ideas for topics that appeal to their interests. The teacher will generate a list of themes based upon the students’ input. The ultimate goal is for students are to research a topic of their choosing and to create short descriptions of unusual facts relating to their topic. The students will use an A to Z format to take notes during their research. The media specialist will provide the FINDS research model (supported by the state and Broward County) to guide the research portion of the project. Students will use the district ‘s online catalog Destiny to find print materials related to their topic. Students will use the online resources found in BEEP and teacher approved web sites for additional information. Students will use PowerPoint as the presentation software for their final product. This software has been selected as it can easily be presented on an Apple or PC platform that can be viewed at home by their parents. The media specialist will teach students how to create slides in the media center using Macbooks on a laptop cart. Students will also earn how to save their project to an external hard drive 5 Lesson Plan Objectives Student will participate in a project based research activity. Students will utilize nonfiction books and the Internet as sources of information. Students will apply an understanding of their topics by taking notes based upon their research. Students will utilize digital tools to create a final product. Students will share their presentation with their peers to enhance their communication skills. Each middle school language arts class will work on this project during a 9-week period. Classroom teacher will allow additional time during the week for students who have completed their required assignments. Week 1 – In class students brainstorm and select their topic and a title for their project. Teacher will distribute folders with the FIINDS research model and lined paper for taking notes and writing sources. Week 2 – Students visit the media center and learn how to find books on their topic-using Destiny the online catalog. The media specialist will model using the student portal on B.E.E.P for online resources. The media special will distribute the FINDS research model and answer questions. Students will begin research Week 3 – Students visit the media center. Students will learn how to cite their information sources using the web site: Son of Citation Machine and a word processing document. Students will save their work to an external hard drive. Students will continue their research activities. Week 4 Students continue research activities in class and/or media center. Week 5. • Students visit the media center and learn how to use the software PowerPoint for their final presentation. • Students will select a theme and slide layout for their presentation. Students will create the title page for their presentation. S • Students will learn how to import pictures for their slides. • Students will create an album in iphoto for their pictures. • Students will to save their work to an external hard drive. Weeks 6 -8 Students will work on their final presentation save their work to an external hard drive. Week 9. Students will present their PowerPoint slide show to their peers and answer questions about their project. 8 Technology A computer connected to a multimedia project, screen, whiteboard or an interactive whiteboard Laptop cart (1 computer per student) with Internet access. Word processing software (Microsoft word or Pages). An external hard drive or flash drives to save student work. Using Son of Citation Machine http://citationmachine.net/index2.php On this site select MLA. Select the print or online resource from the list that you wish to cite. Input the information from the title page of print materials or all of the necessary information from the web site. Click: Make Citation Highlight the bibliographic citation and copy to your word processing document. *Once you start a new citation the previous one is not stored on the web site. 9 Images Students may store images found on the Internet in a folder on their computer, or by creating a photo album in iPhoto for their project. If a student creates original artwork, it will need to be scanned and saved to a hard drive or flash drive as a .jpg. PowerPoint (step by step) Students will open PowerPoint and choose a slide theme. Student will create a title slide for their topic and include their name as the author if the presentation 10 Students will select a slide layout by clicking slide layout. Each slide should have a descriptive sentence and picture 11 The font type, size and color can be changed using the formatting palette The student should duplicate 26 times using the insert menu. This will establish a format for their A-Z presentation. 12 On each slide students will write a letter of the alphabet and a one-sentence description from their notes. On each slide the student will use the insert menu to place a picture on the slide from their picture folder, iphoto or flash drives. After inserting the picture students should size the picture to fit in with the text. Transitions can be added between slides by clicking on the Transitions tab. Use the KISS method for PowerPoint newbies. This is an example of how to do this: My Topic: Foul Foods Who? The population of most Asian countries is whom you would catch eating gourmet edible, slow roasted, farm raised giant crickets. Why? These edible, giant, crunchy crickets have been washed, cooked, dehydrated and seasoned. Crickets are known to provide protein for our bodies. What? I know that some varieties of crickets, are actually interesting to try, but I just can’t seem to get past the idea that they are still creepy, crawly, bugs. In my opinion, crickets would be a freaky food to eat, even if they were covered in dark chocolate. When? People in Thailand are known to consume these slow roasted, creepy crawly bugs for their main dish. They also dip them in chocolate and snack on them as a candy. Yum! Yum! Where? If you were to visit the country of Thailand, this is where you would find this delectable edible freaky food. How?
