Dear Greeley Community Member:
The second edition of the Greeley Youth Sports Guide presents a comprehensive summary of the numerous team sports available to Greeley’s youth. This
rich set of athletic opportunities for our future leaders is the result of a true partnership
between the City of Greeley, local non-profit youth sports organizations, Weld
County Government, the University of Northern Colorado, Weld County School
District 6 and local private enterprise. No one organization, public or private, could
possibly offer such a broad variety of programs as described.
Here are some examples of existing partnerships that allow for these opportunities:
. Over the past several years, the partnership between the City and Weld County School District 6 has
grown significantly. The Greeley Recreation Department now organizes and delivers many middle school sports
programs on behalf of Weld County School District 6 including: Tackle Football (grade 7), Volleyball (grades 6 &
7), Soccer (grades 6 - 8) and Basketball (grade 6 & 7). This arrangement avoids overlap and cuts expenses.
. The City’s Recreation Department partners with the University of Northern Colorado every summer to bring
the expertise of UNC’s coaches directly to Greeley athletes at low cost. UNC sports camps are promoted in the
City’s Leisure Connection publications and residents can sign up using the City’s standard registration process.
Last summer, nine UNC camps were offered this way: Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, Softball, Tennis,
Wrestling, and Track and Field.
. Joint use of sports facilities developed separately by The City of Greeley and Weld County School District
6 gives both groups of athletes access to capital-intensive facilities that otherwise might not be available.
Examples include Weld County School District 6 HS Swimming, which takes place at the Greeley Recreation
Center, and Weld County School District 6 HS Softball, which takes place at the City’s Youth Sports Complex.
. There are also many partnerships between private enterprise in Greeley and the City’s Recreation
Department. For example, Workout West implements the City’s youth tennis programs and the Greeley/
Loveland Swim Club plays a key role in implementing the City’s youth swimming and diving programs.
My sincere thanks to the Youth Sports Guide’s editor Phil Ebersole for creating this document and
filling it with information on virtually every youth team sport available in Greeley. This required a significant
amount of time, and we all appreciate the effort required to make this community resource a reality.
The programs described in this guide represent a very tangible example of what we like to say about our
city: “Great. From the Ground Up!” Youth sports help our families, our children, and let’s not forget, our local
economy, by providing local jobs and by attracting regional visitors. This is a great community asset that we
plan not only to maintain, but to nurture and improve in the future!
Sincerely
Thomas E. Norton, Mayor
Mayor’s Office - 1000 10th Street, Greeley, CO 80631 - (970) 350-9772 Fax (970) 350-9583
We promise to preserve and improve the quality of life for Greeley through timely, courteous and cost-effective service.

From the Editor’s Desk
CONTENTS
Greetings!
Baseball . . . . . . . . . . . . 4
Thank you for picking up the Second Issue of the Greeley Youth
Sports Guide. This guide was developed as a community resource
for the families of Greeley. Information is included on the approximately
22 youth team sports available in the greater Greeley area, regardless of
whether the sport is offered by a government entity, non-profit organization,
or private enterprise.
Basketball . . . . . . . . . . 6
We hope to give you a ‘jump start’ by answering the following questions:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
What team sports are available for my child’s age?
During what seasons does the sport take place?
What skill and commitment levels are required?
Whom do I contact to get my child involved?
What are the typical registration periods?
Where can I get sports-specific instruction for my child?
How about practice facilities?
Our sincere thanks to the major organizations listed in this guide for their
assistance in assembling the information on each sport available. Without
their help, we could not have produced this guide.
We strive to be as accurate as possible when we put the Youth Sports
Guide together. However, the programs offered – as well as the registration
dates and contact points – are always undergoing some degree of change.
Please check with the organizations listed at the end of each section to make
sure you have the most current details.

BASEBALL
COMPETITIVE (Travel) & High SChool
The Greeley-Evans Youth League (GEYL) hosts Competitive/Travel Baseball teams
for ages 9-14 as of 4/30 of the season year. Coaches are required to submit an application
to GEYL for consideration. Selected coaching staffs observe the players at the GEYL Open
Tryout in August. Teams are then formed through a draft process.
Competitive teams play in either the AAA Northern Colorado Rookie League (NCRL)
or in Weekend Tournaments (Three levels: Majors, AAA, and AA) in or out of state. NCRL
games are played against Front Range teams from Brighton to Cheyenne.
All Weld County School District 6 (WCSD6) High Schools offer Spring Baseball for
Grades 9-12. Usually, each high school has a Varsity, Junior Varsity and ‘C’ (freshman) team. Leagues are organized by the
Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) and games are played against similar-sized schools state-wide.
For high school Summer Ball, each school forms one to three teams comprised of 9th-12th grade players. Note that while
these teams are organized by the high school coaches, these are not official high school teams as they are not associated
with TSD in any way. These teams play in various high school summer leagues such as the Colorado American Legion
Baseball League (CALB). In the fall, many high schools form teams for players not involved in other sports and play in
various HS tournaments or leagues.

GYMNASTICS
Airborne Flying Tigers (AFT) offers boys and girls
Recreational Gymnastics, Tumbling and Trampoline programs
year-round for ages 3 and older.
AFT also offers Competitive/Travel Gymnastics programs for
girls ages 7-18. Gymnasts participate in the USA-Gymnastics
(USAG) Junior Olympic Program and are required to be members
of USAG. Competition is organized by the Junior Olympic
program into multiple levels from Level 1 (absolute beginner)
through Level 10 (most advanced). The local affiliation of USAG is Colorado USA Gymnastics (COUSAG).
Initial team placement involves observation by certified skill evaluators followed by placement in the appropriate level.
From this point on, a child must achieve a minimum score (set by USAG) in a USAG-sanctioned competition in order to
move to the next level.
Girl gymnasts in Levels 1-6 compete in the fall in the Compulsory leagues. Girls gymnasts at higher levels compete
in the winter/spring in Optionals leagues.

ICE HOCKEY
The City of Greeley (City) offers a Recreational “Cub Hockey” program yearround for ages 3 and older. The purpose of the classes is to develop the skills required
to play hockey successfully. Skaters can progress through 5 Cub Hockey levels from
beginning to advanced. The program is meant to parallel the Youth Recreational Hockey
Program and Competitive/Travel programs described below; skaters are encouraged to
complete the Cub Hockey program sequence while also playing in leagues.
The City organizes Co-Ed Recreational Hockey Leagues year-round. There are
two age divisions: ages 4 - 8 (mini-Mite and Mite) and ages 9 - 13 (Squirt and Pee-Wee).
The Greeley Youth Hockey Association (GYHA) offers two levels of Competitive/
Travel Ice Hockey for boys and girls ages 9-18. Age divisions are 9-10 (Squirts), 11-12 (Pee-Wee), 13-14 (Bantam)
and 15-18 (Midget). The first step in the process is an evaluation period in mid-September during which the players are
observed. Entry level players are formed into teams of roughly equal strength and play in the Denver North Hockey
League (DNHL). Advanced skaters are formed into teams that play in the more competitive Continental Divide Youth
Hockey League (CDYHL), a league which requires more travel.
The Mountain States Renegades Hockey Club (MSRHC) forms Competitive/Travel Ice Hockey teams for ages 418. Teams play in the Colorado Competitive Youth Hockey League (CCYHL). Age division names are the same as above
with the exception that there are two high school age divisions: ages 15/16 (Midget Minors) and 17/18 (Midget Majors).
Currently, there are no girls-only hockey leagues in Greeley. Interested players can contact the Northern Colorado
Youth Hockey Association (NCYH) based in Fort Collins to join one of their teams. Depending on the level of interest,
NCYH forms one or more girls hockey teams in age divisions U12, U14, U19 (Recreational) and U19 (Competitive).
These teams play against other girls’ teams in the Mountain States Girls Hockey League (MSGHL).
The High Plains Hockey League (HPHL) operates a high school hockey league for boys and girls along the
Front Range. Unofficial teams from various high schools participates in this early spring league. Last year, the Greeley
Freeze Team played in the league. Contact points for each high school vary from year to year. Check the HPHL website
to get the current contact information for your school.

Soccer
The City of Greeley (City) offers two seasons of Recreational Soccer for boys
and girls ages 4-13. Registration is by individual player, and teams are re-formed
each season. The City leagues for ages 12-14 double as the Middle School
Leagues. The Northern Colorado Soccer Club (NCSC) offers “Recreational Plus”
soccer leagues for ages U11-U18 in the fall and spring. The City also has a “Hot
Shots” winter Indoor Soccer program for grades K-HS.
Storm Academy Football Club (Storm) offers summer 3v3 Recreational Soccer
Leagues for ages 7-18. Registration is by team. In the winter, Arena Sports,
LLC (Arena), The Edge Sports Center (Edge), and Qdoba Event Center (QEC)
offer Indoor Soccer Leagues for boys and girls with registrations predominately by team. The Edge also organizes
Instructional Soccer Leagues for ages 5-11 with signups by individuals.
Opportunities to begin the journey to Competitive/Travel Soccer begin at the U10 age level. NCSC and Tigres
USA-Greeley Football Academy (TIGRES) both offer a U10 Intermediate program for boys and girls. This special
year-long program provides a higher level of play than the Recreational Leagues while still limiting travel to Northern
Colorado. Teams play in the Colorado Youth Soccer (CYS) Northern District Intermediate League.
NCSC and TIGRES offer Competitive/travel soccer for boys & girls ages U11-U18. There are multiple teams at
each age group, with the total number of teams depending upon the number of qualified players that tryout. Teams
play in statewide leagues organized by CYS. Teams also participate in tournaments, with higher level teams sometimes
traveling out of state.
All Weld County School District 6 (WCSD6) High Schools offer girls and boys soccer for grades 9-12. Each high
school has a Varsity & Junior Varsity team. Leagues are organized by the Colorado High School Activities Association
(CHSAA) and games are played against similar-sized schools state-wide. WCSD6 offers intramural leagues for girls in
grades 6-8.
