Clopay Expands Commercial Door to
Accommodate Wider Openings
OHIO - Clopay is now offering its commercial Model 3720
premium-duty 2” polyurethane insulated steel door in widths
up to 36’2” to accommodate large openings on warehouses,
manufacturing facilities, pole barns and outbuildings.
The doors were previously available in standard widths up
to 32’2”. The maximum height offered is 24 feet.
Oversized Model 3720 doors are engineered to order and
supplied with heavy-duty hardware and detailed shop drawings
illustrating the proper positioning of support brackets and the
counterbalance system during installation. Additional header
support is also required.
The company notes that the Model 3720 provides a
durable, thermal barrier against extreme temperatures and weather.
The three-layer Intellicore construction features environmentally
safe CFC- and HCFC-free polyurethane insulation foam injected
between two layers of galvanized steel, with a thermal break, to
provide an R-value of 18.4.
An optional 32”x 80” pedestrian pass door can be added
to doors up to 16’ wide to save on heating and cooling costs by
reducing the number of times the main door needs to be opened.
The interior and exterior door panels are primed and
coated with a baked-on polyester paint finish for a durable, lowmaintenance, rust-resistant surface. The doors are available in
white and brown with optional windows.

LAST MONTH'S CASE & ANSWER
Case 22-8 ANSWER:
Case 22-8: Internal Marketing
In early 2013, Bill joined GDN Doors as Sales Manager. GDN
Doors focused exclusively on commercial/industrial doors, dock
levelers and access control systems. He was specifically brought in to
increase the company’s sales and market share.
His first move was to review the existing product offering, sales
approach, and marketing budget. He also looked over historical sales
data to understand where past sales came from. He was interested in
the interaction of installation and service work. Once he had a feel for
the data, he met with several customers. In doing so, he selected some
customers that had been with the company for years and others that
had recently become customers. He was also able to speak with two
companies that had recently stopped doing business with them.
With this analysis complete, he put together a sales strategy
that he believed could bring GDN Doors to the next level. His strategy
would require aggressive pricing on new installations and the hiring
of additional service staff. Bill also planned to hire two additional
office administrators. GDN Doors would also, according to Bill’s plan,
commit to an aggressive inventory plan.
Bill ran his plan by the company owner and received general
support. The owner, however, had one concern: “This will only work if
our existing employees buy in to the plan. I want you to meet with the
employees and make them believe in your plan.”
How can Bill get broad buy in to a strategy that requires so
much change?
Bill has thought extensively about the future of GDN Doors. He
has already done a full data analysis – looking at sales, installation and
service data. Based on all of this analysis, he has set up an action plan
for the organization.
Even having the best business plan does not guarantee success.
Instead, it often depends on the organizational buy in to the plan..do
key employees buy in to the overall direction? Because this buy in is so
crucial, the owner is probably right in insisting on a staff meeting. It can
help get the message out quickly, respond to any employee concerns
and reduce the likelihood of office gossip about the changes.
The key question, however, is how much Bill should explain to
the employees. But really, it is simple.
Bill needs to explain the research he did. He needs to explain
his over-riding goals, and the broad changes that are coming. With
the complete employee group, he may want to keep the discussion
at the general level…but explaining that specific groups within the
company will get the details for the issues that impact them directly.
So, for example, he may want to explain to all employees that some
new installation pricing is being adjusted to grow sales (as a means of
driving service work). Actual percent changes could then be discussed
with the sales and accounting staff.
In general, openness pays off. There are always some employees
who will resist the change, but the right employees will understand the
need to move forward.
Case 22-9: Managing an Established Workplace
Twelve months ago, Bill
was hired by GDN Doors to replace
a retiring General Manager. Bill
was hired because of his experience
in managing door companies.
His mandate was simple: “The
company is really well-known in
the community, it is profitable…..
we need you to keep the ship
steady….keep it running well.”
Bill was happy with his
new assignment. In the last two
companies that he worked for, they
needed him to turnaround sales and
operations. Managing a successful
company seemed like an ideal
opportunity.
The first few months went
well. The employees worked hard
and sales held up. While few
employees were very friendly with
Bill, no one seemed negative about
the new manager.
But that honeymoon period
gradually gave way to a period of
complaints of “that’s not how we
used to do it” as Bill tried to bring in
even minor changes in scheduling.
When he made it clear that he
wanted to explore distributing a
new product, several employees
openly questioned his judgment.
At first he took the comments
as a sign that the employees were
dedicated to the company and
comfortable speaking their minds.
Fairly quickly, he realized that this
was really a testing of his leadership
authority and style.
The out-going General
Manager who Bill replaced had
been with the company for 15 years
and had hired all of the current
employees. His management style
was the only one they had known.
Bill was also getting little
direct support from the owner. He
seemed to value team happiness
over potential sales growth.
What do you recommend to
Bill?

Amarr Introduces
New Dual-Directional
Woodgrain Colors
NORTH CAROLINA - Amarr Garage Doors has introduced three new
dual-directional woodgrain colors – Golden Oak, Walnut and Mahogany
– that are designed to offer a more realistic, natural woodgrain appearance.
The new dual-directional woodgrain colors are available in Amarr’s
Classica, Oak Summit and Stratford Collections of steel garage doors,
and will be new additions to the Heritage Collection.
“Our new dual-directional woodgrain colors offer a horizontal
woodgrain pattern on the rails of a garage door section and a vertical
woodgrain pattern on the stiles and panels,” Amarr marketing director
Vickie Lents said. “The result is a much more distinctive woodgrain
pattern that can be readily seen from the end of a typical driveway.”
“Dual-directional woodgrain colors are a great way for
homeowners to mimic the look of natural wood but with the practicality
and affordability of a steel garage door,” Lents added. “The dualdirectional woodgrain colors are another step in Amarr’s evolution of
garage doors.”
All three new dual-directional colors are available in Classica
1000/2000/3000, Oak Summit 3000, Stratford 3000, and Heritage
3000 constructions. The new colors replace Amarr’s existing Medium
Woodgrain and Dark Woodgrain colors.

Linear Concludes
2013 Dealer Council
Meetings
CALIFORNIA - Linear recently concluded its 2013 dealer council
meetings, wrapping up the four city tour with a stop in Phoenix, Arizona.
2013 marks the third consecutive year Linear hosted the regional events.
The council meetings are part of Linear's ongoing efforts to stay ahead
of industry demands and trends, while providing an opportunity for
collaboration and information gathering about products, procedures and
training.
Council meetings were also held in Minneapolis and Grand
Rapids, along with two sessions in Dallas. Dealers were invited to attend
and offer feedback on Linear products, services and the overall direction
of the company in a completely interactive and open forum environment.
One of the Dallas meetings and the Phoenix session catered entirely to
2GIG Technologies dealers, aiding the smooth transition since Linear's
acquisition of the company in February.
"It's important to have great phone and web support, but there's
no better way to garner feedback than face-to-face meetings," said Bob
Corona, owner of TMC Techpoint Inc. and a Dallas session attendee. "The
council format is a great way to stimulate collaboration while introducing
valuable new perspectives that benefit both Linear and their dealer base.
We discussed a wide range of topics from products and training to collateral
and technology needs, and I look forward to what Linear has in store."
According to the company, a major emphasis this year was on
training for dealers including more frequent in-person sessions and
webinars, more "how to" videos, and the need to continuously offer
education and recommended selling practices for new products. Methods
of distributing training materials and content were also discussed, revealing
a diverse set of preferences including online PDFs, print materials and
interactive digital tools. Customization was another hot topic as dealers
expressed the desire to be able to outfit collateral and user interfaces with
their own logos, something Linear addressed directly with the forthcoming
LinearLinc and NuLinc system.
"The information we gather from our dealer council sessions has a
direct effect on how Linear moves forward and also makes us a better partner
to our dealers and distributors," said Linear President, Michael O'Neal.
"The integration of more Linear systems and products with wireless and
mobile technologies was a carryover trend from last year and something
we've addressed in 2013 with a number of different actions, including the
acquisition of Z-Wave lighting products and 2GIG Technologies, as well
as the launch of the eMerge e3 Access Control platform."
The company notes that dealer council meetings are one element of
Linear's broader training, education, and communication program designed
to let dealers provide feedback while giving them a better understanding of
the company's direction. Linear also maintains a microsite, LearnLinear.
com, which has a listing of all training schedules, videos, webinars, product
literature and other marketing resources available on demand.
"The dealer council meetings are the best opportunity for two-way
communication with some of our most important customers. Over the next
year, Linear will expand its assortment of mobile app-controlled solutions
as well as products that can integrate with other manufacturers' hardware,
something our dealers are very excited about," said Duane Paulson,
Linear's senior vice president, product and market development.

Kaba Delivers New
Access Control
Kit with Biometric
Technology
NORTH CAROLINA - As part of the I.AM Series Identity Access
Management product line, Kaba Access and Data Systems (ADS)
announces the availability of its Standalone Identity Access Management
System (AD102 Kit). The two-piece solution includes a Standalone
Controller (AD102) and Fingerprint Key (AR402) and provides all the
benefits of biometric access control in a simple, non-networked package.
The AD102 Kit supports up to two entry points with a single reader.
Similar to Kaba’s AX.S Series of products, the access control
application is embedded, eliminating the installation and maintenance of
software or servers. In addition, the AD102 Kit is an independent, nonnetworked module so there is no need for a PC. Users are enrolled and
deleted directly at the Fingerprint Key, and visitors are granted access
by entering a PIN code. Users gain authenticated access in less than one
second by simply placing their finger at the Fingerprint Key.
According to Logan Stewart, product manager Kaba ADS
Americas, “The AD102 Kit is the perfect solution for residential or
commercial applications, including doors, gates, garages, warehouses, gun
safes, jewelry cabinets, data rooms, remote sites, and second properties.
And, even though the system is designed to accommodate smaller scale
usage, the AD102 Kit can migrate to work with an AM524 or AM300
Controller and its door unit, creating a full featured web-based system.”

C.H.I.
Introduces New
B.I.M. Models
ILLINOIS - C.H.I. has introduced new B.I.M.
models for commercial sectional and rolling steel
products. B.I.M. models are 3-D image portrayals
of C.H.I. products used by architects and general
contractors in construction plans. The 3-D images
allow the architects and contractors to see if there
are conflicts for space between various building
materials.
The B.I.M. models, when copied and pasted
into the construction plans, act as a “place holder”
for the dimensional footprint of the doors. If any
other materials encroach on the door's space, a
warning appears to alert the person working on the
plans.
The B.I.M. models can be found in the
C.H.I. Overhead Doors section on www.arcat.
com and on the C.H.I. web site on the Architect
page. CAD REVIT software is needed to use the
models.

Sommer USA Updates
Radio Frequency
NORTH CAROLINA - Sommer USA
recently announced the release of an
updated radio frequency and new rolling
code enabled products.
The Sommer synoris opener, along
with all of the available accessories, will use
a 310 MHz FM rolling code frequency. The
company notes that the new radio frequency
continues to ensure Sommer customers
that the Sommer synoris opener and radio
controlled products offer secure and reliable
access to their homes.
The new Sommer synoris openers
with 310MHz radio frequencies will still look
the same as the previous Sommer openers.
There are two ways to check the frequency of
the opener. One way is to look at the handheld
transmitter; the 310MHz opener transmitters
will include the Sommer USA web address
while older opener transmitters will not.
Another way to verify the radio frequency
is to look at the back of the transmitter. The
top line of the five lines of text shows the
model number which will indicate whether it
is 310MHz or 315MHz. Look for the “310”
numbering in “Model TX03-310” for the
most up-to-date radio frequency.
Parts and accessories for 315MHz
operators will continue to be available to
service existing units.

July 2013 Housing Starts in Canada
ONTARIO - Housing starts in Canada were
trending at 187,416 units in July compared to
182,142 in June, according to Canada Mortgage
and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The trend is
a six-month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts.
“The trend in total housing starts continued to be relatively stable in July, remaining
within a narrow range of roughly 182,000 to
188,000 units since March 2013,” said Mathieu
Laberge, Deputy Chief Economist at CMHC.
“For the past few months, total housing starts have followed the stabilizing trend
observed in sales of existing homes earlier this
year. As expected, the trends in the two market
segments typically follow a similar pattern with
the new home market lagging behind the existing home market by a few months.”
CMHC uses the trend measure as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts

Overhead Door
Named Top Garage
Door Brand Among
Women
Delden Manufacturing
Receives LiftMaster
2012 Award of
Excellence
TEXAS - For a second consecutive year, Overhead Door has received
the Women’s Choice Award by WomenCertified for America’s Best for
Home in the garage door category. This award designation is based on a
national survey of more than 5,000 women who were asked to select the
brands they would most likely recommend to others.
“Overhead Door is honored to earn the Women’s Choice Award
and to be considered the brand of choice among women,” said Dennis
Stone, president and CEO of Overhead Door. “The award validates
Overhead Door’s commitment to our distributors and our collective
ability to deliver professional service and high performance products.
The Women’s Choice Award represents the earned trust that women put
in our brand.”
According to a 2012 Fleishman Hillard Study, today’s female
consumer values the opinion of others and most feel compelled to help
others make smart purchases. The Women’s Choice Award identifies
brands that are most recommended and trusted by women and those that
deliver a customer experience worthy of recommendation.
“The Women’s Choice Award honors brands that have
demonstrated exceptional service in meeting the needs of women and
that receive an extraordinary recommendation rating by women,” said
Delia Passi, WomenCertified, Inc., founder and author of Winning
the Toughest Customer: The Essential Guide to Selling to Women.
“Recognizing Overhead Door as the top garage door brand helps ‘women
guide other women’ to make smart choices.”
MISSOURI - Delden Manufacturing Company, a manufacturer and
distributor of garage doors, parts, operators and accessories since
1964, has announced that they have been awarded the LiftMaster
2012 Award of Excellence for Outstanding Sales, Installation
and Service. Delden has been offering LiftMaster residential and
commercial door and gate operators for decades.
Ty Collins, Delden Manufacturing Company General
Manager, states, “LiftMaster has always been a productive partner
of ours and we are very pleased with the LiftMaster product and
service.”
“We have had a good relationship with LiftMaster for many
years and are looking forward to many more”, states Denise Dahms,
President of Delden Manufacturing Company.
Delden supplies overhead garage doors, openers and
accessories in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, North and North-Central
Arkansas, and South and South-Central Illinois.

more complete picture of the state
of the housing market. In some situations, analyzing only SAAR data
can be misleading in some markets,
as they are largely driven by the
multiples segment of the markets
which can be quite volatile from
one month to the next.
The standalone monthly
SAAR was 192,853 units in July,
relatively unchanged from 193,797
in June. The SAAR of urban starts
decreased by 2.1 per cent in July
to 173,042 units, mostly reflecting
a decline in the single starts segments in July. Specifically, single
urban starts decreased by 5.5 per
cent to 58,731 units in July while
the multiple urban starts segment
essentially held steady at 114,311
units.
July’s seasonally adjusted
annual rate of urban starts increased
in British Columbia. Urban starts
decreased in all other regions, including Atlantic Canada, the Prairies, Ontario and Quebec.
Rural starts were estimated
at a seasonally adjusted annual rate
of 19,811 units.

SEPTEMBER 2013
TECHNOLOGY
Technological advances now allow for 3D printing – producing a 3D object by printing layer after layer until the unit is
complete. Also called additive manufacturing, the process has been used for rapid prototyping. As the cost of 3D printing
declines, there is a substantial interest for 3D printing of consumer goods by consumers. This article explores the implications
for the garage door industry.
The Impact of 3D Printing on the
Garage Door Industry
Understanding the technology, its potential and its limitations
By Dave Bussière
A
recent online posting
highlighted the potential
use of 3D printing that
could impact the garage door
industry. The title said it all: “3D
Printing Would Obviate Waiting
for the Repairman.” The story
focused on a broken clip on a
residential garage door. The clip
was to hold the garage door opener
arm to the top of the top sectional
door section.
The actual clip was repaired
properly by a local door company,
and the author notes: "Now it's as
good as new. We can now put our
cars in the garage, and all is right
with the world."
The issue is not the repair
itself. Instead the issue focused
on the time spent waiting for the
repair technician: “Today I worked
from home so ____ Garage Doors
could repair our door….Having
to work from home to greet the
repairman made me long for a
3D printer. Many of these devices
print using ABS (Acrylonitrile
Butadiene Styrene) plastic. Like
just a normal printer puts the ink
on the paper to form the correct
letters, 3D printers print by laying
down a very thin layer of goop, and
an ultraviolet light immediately
passes over the material and cures
it. The process is repeated over an
over until the desired item has been
built up one layer at a time. Unlike
a lathe which strips material away
from a block to reveal the desired
shape trapped inside, this type of
3D printing is an additive process.
Although 3D printers typically use
ABS plastic, there are some that can
print using titanium, aluminum, or
cement. The alternative-material
devices use lasers to cure metallic
powder into solid metal. There's a
famous song "If I had a hammer..."
Well if I had a 3D printer that
printed titanium, I could have
printed my replacement part and
spent a normal day at the office.”
So the real issue for door
professionals is to understand the
real potential for 3D printers and
their impact on the garage door
industry. Will replacement parts be
that easy to produce?
3D Printing of Consumer
Products
The idea of using 3D printing
to create consumer products is not
unprecedented. Houzz.com, for
example, has highlighted that 3D
printing costs and accessibility
now allow for mass customization
of home decoration pieces.
Similarly, geekboy.com has noted
that homeowners are now able to
produce custom art through the use
of 3D printers – speaking directly
to the garage door opener problem
that started this article.
While both houzz.com and
geekboy.com focus on using 3D
printing technology to produce
unique items that enhance a
home’s décor, the real impact
of 3D printing is in its ability to
replicate previously produced
items. 3D printing is ideal for
producing gears, clips, casings and
other small components that are
typically made of plastic. As the
technology progresses, it allows
for the use of metals and plasticmetal combinations.
Popular Mechanics, for
example, has highlighted how late
night comedian Jay Leno has used
3D printers to produce replacement
parts for his fleet of vintage cars.
He essentially produces difficult/
impossible parts to source for
vehicles dating back to the early
1900s. He has a faulty or rusty old
part….he prints a new replacement
part.
Closer to home, a recent
YouTube video shows how 3D
printing is used to produce an
unspecified garage door opener
gear (3D Printed Drive Gear for
Garage Door: www.youtube.com/
watch?v=S6OWmQmCfOQ).
While the video does not give
enough detail of the process or
address the cost or time required
to produce the part, it does
demonstrate that people are trying
to adapt 3D technology to the door
industry.
The Next 10 Years
So the 3D technology
exists, and there is evidence that
there are at least a few parts in
the garage door industry that lend
themselves to 3D printing. That,
of itself, does not mean that it will
be financially viable to use 3D
printing to produce garage door
hardware or opener parts.
Having said that, once the
technology and a market demand
exists, costs tend to come down
rapidly. It’s known as Wright’s
Law – production costs decline as
a function of overall production.
So the first units of any successful
technology will be expensive,
but if there is adequate demand,
production costs will decline
as the demand is met through
broader production efforts. This
declining cost structure will result
in additional demand.
This is generally supported
by research highlighted by DailyTech.com. Michigan Technology University researcher Joshua
Pearce noted that consumers, faced
with high replacement part costs
and rapidly declining 3D printer
costs, tend to opt for the ability to
self-produce replacement parts.

3D PRINTERS (Cont'd)
“Pearce said the fact that
prices are starting to come down
for 3D printers, and the fact that
it no longer requires an engineer
to figure out how to use one, will
make 3D printers more ubiquitous
in the home in the coming years.”
But
more
insightful,
perhaps, are the comments posted
by readers. This is a technical
online forum, so the comments
tend to be made by well-informed
individuals. Responding to an
initial comment that ended in
“I can’t see this taking off,” the
following two comments are worth
considering:
Comment 1: “The thing to consider
is how long will it take you to
model all these replacement parts?
You have to have very precise
measurements, which isn't going to
be easy for most people. When the
day comes where manufacturers
give you access to replacement part
3D files, then it will be a lot easier.
Or, of course, when entire products
can be printed with plans.”
Response: “No doubt manufacturers
will charge you to use their plans.
Maintaining adequate stock and
distribution of spare parts for an
acceptable price is a challenge for
manufacturers. If they could just
charge you to let you do all the
work yourself? They'd be all over
that.”
But these comments focus
on 3D printers only being in the
hands of average consumers. What
if, instead, the next stage of use
of the 3D technology was at the
dealer level? This would allow
a company to make a strategic
decision to buy the technology to
replicate difficult to source parts.
In many ways, this would
simplify the issue. Garage door
dealers would need to have access
to manufacturers' drawings. They

3D PRINTERS (Cont'd)
would cover the cost of the technology over
multiple consumers.
Some Concerns
But there are some issues with the
3D printing of replacement parts, especially
in the garage door industry. Consider the
garage door problem noted at the start of this
article. It is simple enough….only a clip was
needed.
But how old was the garage door
opener? Would you want to provide the part
needed to fix an opener from, say, 1990?
Would providing the part’s specs so that
a consumer could 3D print their own part
be any different legally from providing the
actual part?
If the consumer printed the part, what
would be the impact on warranties? Would
that change if the 3D print instructions were
provided by the original manufacturer?
The developments in 3D printing
technology present interesting opportunities
for the garage door industry. The ability to
instantly replicate specific parts is clearly
a benefit, but there are many questions that
need to be answered before broad acceptance
takes place.
But these concerns should not stop
garage door professionals from planning
for the implications of 3D printing. The
technology is robust. The potential uses are
broad. Wright’s Law predicts that the price
will dramatically decline.

QUESTION 1 (From the UK):
What is the life expectancy of a
roller garage door?
I bought a door that has a
motorized central cylinder which
rotates, wrapping the slatted door
"curtain" around it.
I bought ours about five or
six years ago. It was an unbranded
door from a company that I had not
heard of but who were recommended
to me by word of mouth. My
experience has not been great
from the first day (door of wrong
size supplied, subsequent door had
dented slats, micro switches failed
in remote control, etc.).
Amongst other things, where
the door wraps around itself when
lifted, the paint has worn off, yet
it was advertised as a maintenance
free finish. I worry that trying to
paint it might make it look worse
rather than better.
I think I bought this type
of door to maximize wall space:
up and over doors would protrude
into the garage, restricting where I
could put up shelves.
I think this type of door is
best suited to empty garages used
to store cars. Our garage is used as
a shed to put all the things that have
nowhere else to go. Sometimes
things get knocked and slip into
the way of the door. If the door
is lowered, it hits an obstacle and
continues to turn. I realize that that's
our fault for putting clutter near the
door. I did wonder why the door
could not be built like a car window,
where it would stop or even reverse
if it hit an obstacle. Is this just
because of cost or is it because of
security (in case this feature was
exploited to open closed doors)?
The last time the door
jammed, it caused two of the four
hinges to snap. The door is currently
being lifted by just two of them
until I get around to ordering two
more. Are two enough or is it better
to have four?
There are two recesses on

THIS MONTH'S QUESTION
QUESTION 1:
Questions about a residential rolling door.
the motor that you use an Allen key
to adjust and they determine where
the door stops at the top and bottom
of its travel.
Whenever the door jams,
it causes these top and bottom
adjustments to go wrong. In fact,
the hinges snapped because the door
hit the ground and kept turning last
time this happened!
The problem I now face is
that the "receptacle" that the Allen
key engages with has been damaged.
I guess it has been rounded out by
over use!
This means I have been able
to adjust the top limit of the door
but not the bottom one. I have had
enough problems with the door, so
replacement seems the best solution
for my mental health! But I am
wondering if there is a temporary
fix. Perhaps aralditing a bolt into the
recess and using the bolt to turn it?
I'm also looking for a source
of long Allen keys to make any
future access easier. Do you know
of any suppliers?
What have been your
experiences with garage doors?
Should I replace it with a branded
one or is there a better type of door
to consider?
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 1:
We have had a Gliderol manufactured
roller door for a few years and four
neighbors have had them longer
- no problems that I am aware of.
From memory, ours came with a
10 year guarantee which includes
the plastisol finish. They come in
automatic and manual versions and
the automatic ones have a safety
device which sends them back up if
they encounter an obstacle.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 2:
I looked at roller doors when we
had a new double garage built a
few years ago, and was appalled at
how flimsy they seemed.
I ended up with a motorised
sectional door - which is German,
and built like a brick house. When
it opens, it does go back a long way
into the garage, but there's room
for shelving units along the sides
- below runner level, and I've got
lots of planks and pipes, etc. stored
(suspended) between the ceiling
joists. These can only be accessed
when the door is closed, but that
isn't a problem.
My door does stop (and
reverses a bit) if it hits an obstacle.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 3:
We have a professionally fitted
securoglide. OK so far. About
10 years old. Photo cell stops it
lowering if obstructed but I have
never tried standing underneath it.
Probably averages four operations
per day.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 4:
Mine's an "Autotherm" by
Autoroll.
To answer your original
question: I don't think the life
expectancy is very long, even if I
do take extra-good care of it. If I get
your five or six years, I'll be happy,
and surprised. As you say, it seems
a bit flimsy: all the components
are sturdy enough, but taken all
together they don't make a strong
construction. It's also what I'd call
noisy. And slow ...
I have experience with
another kind of door at the place
where I do a bit of gardening. This
is a steel roller door, worked by a
big motor. This door works very
fast, almost silently, and has a
pressure sensor on the lower edge
which detects any obstruction and
immediately reverses the motion.
I'd guess that that door is a good
dozen years old or more, possibly

much more.
However: doors like that
cost 000s. I got my door by asking
a neighbor where he got his, and
he put me on to a guy who mounts
them in his spare time. This chap
is really excellent -- very precise
and of course, has mounted scores
of doors, so knows exactly what
he's doing. My door cost me 750
pounds, including labor. (By the
way, the door is about 2.5 meters
wide, 2m high.)
"You get what you pay
for." My door currently looks great
(have had it almost a year now),
and it has created far more space
in the garage, as well as widened
the door for driving the car in and
out (wow! Yes! I garage me car!).
Also, the garage is now much better
insulated. No drafts whatever.
However, one month after
installation, I propped a brush up
against the running channel on
the side, and forgot about it, and
closed the door. The magic eye,
which prevents the door operating
if an object is cutting the beam,
could not see the brush handle. The
door closed, continued when it hit
the broom, and snapped all four
brackets in the roller.
(By the way, it continues to
run when closed for a few seconds
because it is closing the gaps
between each slat - the guy told me
this.) In this case, it continued to run
until all the brackets had snapped,
because it never "reached bottom."
I called up the guy, he came
that very evening, and fitted four
new hinges for 50 pounds (which
I was very glad to pay). Again, he
has done this many times before.
The wear on the face of
your door is caused by not keeping
it clean of dust, etc. (I use a soft
hand-brush.) The company told
me this after I'd enquired about a
pressure bar for the bottom edge
(they don't do them). The only other
maintenance it requires, they say,
is WD40'ing the running channels
every now and again (which doesn't
seem that thorough, to me).
I don't give my door much
time -- could be years if I'm careful,
and lucky -- before I need to buy
another part, or even replace it.
However, I paid 750 pounds,
which I had, instead of 000s (which
I don't have).
And, it finally got rid of
the massively heavy up-and-over
which we'd had for 20-odd years,
and which would have been beyond
my physical capability in another
few years!
So, I'm (relatively) happy.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 5:
Sectional doors of the type
manufactured by Hormann are very
common in Germany and last a very
long time, so I guess it's horses for
courses.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 6:
That was our experience when
we replaced a heavy up-and-over
that was at the end of its life with
a Hormann sectional with which
we're more than pleased.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 7:
We have a Steeline roller door.
Manufactured to size in Australia!
About 20 years old now. I had to
replace a stripped drive gear once.
Apart from that, while it has its
foibles, it works fine.
