FEES RM 3,000 includes all teaching
materials, 7 nights accommodation on a
twin sharing basis with breakfast, lunches
on programme days and several dinners.
The primary objectives of the course are:
• to provide participants with targeted training in
urban conservation planning methodologies and
planning tools;
• to inspire the participants to incorporate those
methodologies and tools into their professional
work, and in so doing,
• to respond to critical needs in Malaysia arising from
rapid urbanisation,
• to implement new approaches to building vibrant
and liveable cities, and
• to conserve the authentic historical heritage as
outlined in recent national planning documents in
Malaysia.
To achieve these objectives, the course will provide
course participants with:
• knowledge of internationally recognized
methodologies for conservation;
• specific tools that will enrich participants’
professional development, including cultural
mapping, economic incentives, cultural tourism
measures; and
• knowledge of new approaches to urban conservation
planning to assist in preparing Conservation
Management Plans and Special Area Plans.
The Urban Conservation Planning in Malaysia course
is primarily aimed at mid-career planners working in
Malaysia. Architects and others working in fields related
to the built environment may also apply to attend. This
is an intensive course and is intended to build greater
capacity for meeting urban conservation challenges in
Malaysia. Places are limited.
The course is in its third year, previously being held
in 2012 and 2013 in George Town, Penang. In 2015,
for the first time, the course will be offered in Kuala
Lumpur.
The course is organised by the Getty Conservation
Institute, Badan Warisan Malaysia, and Think City Sdn.
Bhd. (a subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Berhad).
The course will be led by international and local
instructors utilizing problem-solving and other active
learning methods that complement more formal
presentations and hands-on field exercises.
The course will be hosted in a centrally located hotel
in Kuala Lumpur with field and site visits within the
Klang Valley to utilise urban conservation planning
methodologies and tools in the field, and help to
prepare a conservation management plan, using one or
more of these sites.
The Malaysian Institute of Planners has accredited the
course with 5 CPD points.

I feel really fortunate to have attended the Urban
Conservation Planning course in 2014. The course
was a real eye-opener for me as a planner, and a great
opportunity to have access to world-renowned instructors
and knowledge in the area of urban conservation. The
2014 course has given me opportunities to learn more
about the different ways of approaching urban planning
including urban conservation, and the tools that we, as
planners, may utilise to manage tangible and intangible
urban heritage to create a sustainable heritage city.
Having instructors and participants from overseas has
also given me the chance to learn from the approach
taken to urban conservation planning in different
countries, and to create a global network of colleagues.

The brave planners [who participated in the course]
quickly recognized that they could not plan from on
high and make decisions that will affect thousands
of lives and properties without going down to the
ground to try to understand how people use their
space, what their heritage and social values are and
how it all connects up, that ‘planners draw spaces,
but people make places.’ ... In particular, they
found the cultural mapping exercises challenging,
intriguing and eye-openers.

Thanks to our talented team of passionate
instructors and cooperative participants, the first
two versions of this urban conservation planning
course were very inspiring. In April 2015 I look
forward to working with another group of young
Malaysian colleagues, anxious to learn more about
how conservation is a particular kind of urban
development rather than an enemy of it. When
practiced with sensitivity and care, this can yield
very positive results for the people of Malaysia.
