When you start an apprenticeship or traineeship you enter into a training agreement with an employer. Throughout this agreement your employer and West Coast Institute will provide you with the training you need to become a qualified tradesperson. If you’re interested in traditional trades like bricklaying or mechanics, then it’s likely you would consider an apprenticeship. Traineeships are usually offered in non-trade areas such as business, beauty and health. How do I get started? Once you have decided on the industry that suits you, start talking to prospective employers about taking you on as an apprentice/trainee. If you’re a school student speak to your schools VET coordinator who can help you select the best training option. Ensure you have a resume and/or personal portfolio which outlines your work experience, skills and achievements. Once you have secured an apprenticeship/traineeship you or your employer will need to contact the Australian Apprenticeships Centre. They will help organise the signing of the training agreement and advise you of the official approval of the apprenticeship/traineeship. The final step to begin you apprenticeship/traineeship is for your employer to enrol you at West Coast for your theoretical training and assessment.
