»» Employers are more inclined to take on new
apprentices who already have industry knowledge
and experience.
• A trade qualification faster
»» By completing a pre-apprenticeship you may be eligible to have your apprenticeship length reduced
by up to three months.
Who can complete a pre-apprenticeship?
Anyone who is over the age of 15 and has completed
year 10 school studies is eligible to complete a

Apprenticeships and
traineeships
Providing training on the job
and in the classroom.
When you start an apprenticeship or traineeship you
enter into a training agreement with an employer.
Throughout this agreement your employer and
West Coast Institute will provide you with the training
you need to become a qualified tradesperson.
If you’re interested in traditional trades like bricklaying
or mechanics, then it’s likely you would consider an
apprenticeship. Traineeships are usually offered in
non-trade areas such as business, beauty and health.
How do I get started?
Once you have decided on the industry that suits you,
start talking to prospective employers about taking you
on as an apprentice/trainee. If you’re a school student
speak to your schools VET coordinator who can help you
select the best training option.
Ensure you have a resume and/or personal portfolio
which outlines your work experience, skills and
achievements.
Once you have secured an apprenticeship/traineeship
you or your employer will need to contact the Australian
Apprenticeships Centre. They will help organise the
signing of the training agreement and advise you of the
official approval of the apprenticeship/traineeship.
The final step to begin you apprenticeship/traineeship
is for your employer to enrol you at West Coast for your
theoretical training and assessment.
If you already have industry experience, or are currently
working in the industry, you may be eligible to complete
your apprenticeship/traineeship in less time. Please
enquire about this at the time of enrolment.
As an apprentice or trainee, your
employer will expect you to:
• Apply yourself to all aspects of your training and
make every effort to develop the skills to gain your
qualification
• Make a commitment to fulfil your work
responsibilities including taking care of workplace
property and respecting the rights of other
employees in the workplace
• Complete required training both at work and at West Coast Institute.
Earning money
Apprentices and trainees are paid training wages. Wages
vary according to the industry, your age and the stage
of the apprenticeship/traineeship. Further information
about wages can be found at www.trainingwa.wa.gov.au
At the end of your apprenticeship/
traineeship you will receive:
•
•
•
•
An industry recognised qualification
Higher pay
Great job prospects
Access to further training opportunities.

Peter Camarri
Director of CME Boilermaking Services
Specialising in the fabrication of hand rails for the train industry, CME Boilermaking Services works with some
of Western Australia’s largest mining organisations. Director, Peter Camarri finds a lot of benefits in employing
apprentices. “They are always eager to learn and with the training apprentices receive at West Coast, they are
usually ready to hit the ground running from the very beginning of their Apprenticeship,” said Peter.
“It’s a quick and simple process to hire apprentices so I usually have
four employed at any one time.”

For the employer
Hiring an apprentice or trainee
is a smart way to invest in your
business.
With ongoing industry-relevant training, an apprentice
or trainee can add real value to your business and
contribute to your bottom line.
Depending on the nature and scope of your business,
you can choose to employ an apprentice or trainee in any
one of a wide range of qualifications that best suits your
business needs.
There are now more apprenticeship and traineeship
programs than ever before and training is now
competency based rather than fixed to time.
All apprenticeships and traineeships can be undertaken
on a full-time basis and many can be completed
part-time. There are also more options to employ in-school and mature aged apprentices and trainees.
Your existing staff can also undertake an apprenticeship
or traineeship. West Coast Institute can conduct an
assessment to establish what formal training is required
for your staff member to complete their apprenticeship
or traineeship. If they have extensive industry
experience, it may take less time.
Financial incentives
Employers can receive a range of financial incentives
to reduce the cost of training apprentices and trainees
including:
•
•
•
•
•
Australian Government incentives
Payroll Tax exemption
Workers’ compensation rebate
Funding for training
Funding from the Building and Construction Industry
Training Fund (BCITF).
An employer of an apprentice/trainee
should:
• Ensure that a training contract with your apprentice/
trainee is completed
• Encourage your apprentice/trainee by providing:
»» Employment, training and supervision for the
duration of the apprenticeship/traineeship
»» Necessary time off work to complete the relevant
off the job training if required
»» A working environment and conditions which
contribute to developing skills and meet
occupational health and safety regulations
»» Normal employer obligations including wages,
superannuation and insurance
• Apprentices/trainees are generally paid less than
other employees because they are being trained.
Wages vary according to their age, the industry and
the stage of the apprenticeship/traineeship
• Honour a one month probation period for each year
of the traineeship/apprenticeship. During this time,
the training contract can be cancelled by either party.
West Coast Institute can help you:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Select the right apprentice/trainee for your business
Employ an apprentice/trainee
Complete and register a training contract
Train and assess your apprentice/trainee
Support your apprentice/trainee
Complete and issue qualifications
West Coast Institute can conduct an assessment to
establish what formal training is required for your staff
to complete their apprenticeship or traineeship.
