Brazil in General;
As usual, this trip was target-focused and not about large numbers of species. On the
recommendation of Ciro Albano we tailored the trip with Fortaleza-based Guide Caio Brito.
Left to right; Me, Andre Grassi and Caio Brito
Caio Brito www.caiobrito.com for the March 18th -23rd and April 1st-11th sections. Caio excelled at his bird-finding skills
being especially talented in hearing and identifying calls and songs. He had time-served knowledge of all the sites and
usually had alternatives if the target birds were not showing. He also provided his very comfortable Renault Duster 4x4
and did all the driving, covering some 7000+km, as well as organising the hotels, food and birds... Without the help of
Caio I would have undoubtedly missed several good birds and probably not even found the sites. He managed to stay
flexible throughout the trips adjusting the itinerary as necessary and providing options when required. Caio was a first
rate guide well worth the money. He also employed some professional local guides to make sure we maximised the
species and time available such as:
Andre Grassi http://ecobirdingbrazil.46graus.com (and his big yellow truck !) joined us in Canudos and accompanied
and joint-guided in the areas from the Pfrimer’s parakeet site west. I thus had two guides for the same price ! Andre was
outstanding for his work on Kaempfer’s Woodpecker and Rondonia Bushbird amongst others. Andre’s tireless
enthusiasm to get me new birds, delivered new species right up to the last 15 minutes of light on the last day.
Caio Brito,
Bob
and me
Jefferson Bob https://www.facebook.com/bobptg at Potengi. “Bob” speedily delivered all the Caatinga specialities
within 24 hours and worked hard to ensure great views of all the species. His knowledge of the area was detailed,
concise and all this without binoculars !! His mother also made us a couple of superb meals.
Wylde at Ariel, whose mother provided an enormous, superb lunch...and made sure we ate it all !
We also met another friend of Caio’s...Thiago Toledo Silva, https://www.facebook.com/thiago a pilot by trade,
but also a superb bird photographer. He helped me out with some very useful photographic tips and made my photo’s
look distinctly amatureish !!. Thiago also helped us out at Guaramiranga. He has also produced the Photoshop presentation
which is generously free for all.

The north-eastern Brazil guides are a much respected bunch, they are thoroughly professional, excellent bird-finders
and problem-solvers and easy to bird with. They know exactly what birders want and they deliver ! They all made us
feel exceptionally welcome and it felt like birding with friends.
At all times we were made to feel very welcome and had only one bad experience when we arrived at the Barbanera
Club west of Fortaleza (which we booked via Expedia.co.uk) to find it abandoned. Fortunately the taxi driver took us to a
better Hotel in Fortaleza. The hotels we stayed at were all of a good standard with the Fazendas in Tocantins standing
out as the best and most interesting places. The weather, although hot was fine and dry for the most part with just a few
showers either overnight or in the late afternoons. We drank bottled water throughout, the food was great and a litre of
Slova vodka was about R$ 7 (£1:50 !!).
Daylight hours East coast 05:30-17:30hrs. Tocantins 06:00-18:00hrs.
Currency £1= 5.43 BRL (Brazilian Real). Bradesco ATM‘s would dispense R$800 per transaction, which could be
immediately repeated to get more cash out.
Itinerary
Sat Mar’ 12th
All went as planned arriving at the Hotel Veraneio, R$135 by 10:30pm. ATM at the airport only allowed R$500.

Sun 13th
Up at 06:30, breakfast and taxi to the airport for the 10:30 flight to Fernando Do Naronha (1hr). R$ 800 was the
max’ amount the ATM (Bradesco) would allow but did it twice. Paid TPA tax at arrivals (R$ 177 each for 3 nights), then a taxi to the
Pousada Simpatia Ilha R$ 1284 for 3 nights. Walked the tracks and road to Porto and back till dark.
