As a financial and economic centre of the region, it is a dynamic and innovative city with intense social and business activity. Apart from these, it offers to the visitor impressive landscapes, unique history, rich cultural tradition and renowned cuisine, combined with the warm hospitality of its people. It is also one of Europe's main reference points for architecture and contemporary art. Combined, all of this makes Bilbao one of the main tourist attractions in Spain. This unique of its kind city is an even more intriguing destination, because time in Bilbao may soon need to be identified as BG or AG (Before Guggenheim, After Guggenheim). Never has a single monument or art and architecture so radically changed a city or, for that matter - a whole nation, and in this case two - Spain and the semiautonomous region of Spain - the Basque country, or by its official name - Euskadi. By telling all this details about Bilbao, I don't run out of interesting facts about the city. In addition to its distinct culture and nation is its linguistically mysterious, non Indo European language of its own - Euskera. Exploring the pleasures and treasures of the city, it is inevitable for the visitor, not to be impressed by the astonishing Nervion River, which meanders through Bilbao, whose historic core was built inside one of its loops, protecting it from three sides. Most of the important shops, banks and tourist facilities lie within a short stroll to the Gran Via, running east - west through the core of the town. The Old Quarter is east of the modern commercial centre, across the river, and has curiously few medieval monuments, despite the fact that Bilbao was established in 1300. It really has an interesting old quarter however, situated on the east side of Nervion River and the site of its best bars and restaurants. Going there at night and barhopping, ordering small cups of beer or wine has become a custom. Have in mind that a small glass of wine is called chiquiteo. There are four bridges, who connect the Old Quarter to the much larger modern part on the opposite bank. A few paces in northern direction from the Old Quarter's centre there are graceful arches, 64 in all, enclosing the Plaza Nueva, also called the Plaza de los Martires, completed in 1830. Undoubtedly, the whole town of Bilbao is considered a national landmark and is worth visiting. Offering amusements and sites, which are going to fulfill everyone's expectations, it is one of the most preferred destinations in Europe. Visit and come round to that opinion yourself. Page 5 North Spain Cruise SANTANDER The beautiful seaside city of Santander has a lot to offer to visitors. Excellent beaches, a lively city center, interesting museums, beautiful gardens and nature preserves, etc. Follow our tips and suggestions and make the most of your time in Santander. Start your visit to the city enjoying a walk by the sea. Stroll along the Pereda gardens from Plaza Alfonso XIII. The gardens were build on the old city port in honour of the local writer Jose Maria de Pereda whose statue by Coullaut Valera stands in the gardens. In your walk you will come accross some of the most famous buildings of Santander such as the Palace of "la Compañia Transatlantica Española". In the northern part of Santander you will find the beaches of Sardinero, spreading from the Peninsula of Magdalena to Mataleñas. The Sardinero beach is divided in two parts separated by the gardens of Piquio. The first beach spreads along 330 metres while the second occupies 1000 metres. "El Sardinero" has become a popular zone of the city, traditionally known as one of the most elegant beach resorts of the Spanish coast. This neighbourhood was developed during the 19th century as a new tourist centre of the city. The gardens of Piquio, built in the 19th century, stand between the first and second beaches of El Sardinero. From here you will be able to see the peninsula and famous Palace of Magdalena. The famous gardens of Magdalena are located in the bay of Santander in a peninsula also known as "La Magdalena", besides the beaches of Sardinero. The Royal Palace of la Magdalena was once a residence for kings and queens who came to the city for their beach holiday. It was built by González de Riancho and Gonzalo Bringas with a mixture of British and French styles. This is a privileged area for relaxation and contact with nature. During the summer the palace houses the famous summer courses of the International University Menéndez Pelayo, a forum for students and outstanding specialists in the most varied fields of knowledge. In the park of Magdalenda there is also a small zoo where you can see penguins, seals and some other sea animals as well as three galleons with which the Cantabrian sailor Vital Alsar crossed the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans. The palace of "La Magdalena" and its gardens were declared Cultural Heritage site in 1982. The Cathedral of Santander "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción" is located in the city centre. It was rebuilt after the fire of 1941 which destroyed most of the building (see history of Santander). The Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in the Santander, dating from the 13th century. Especially worth seeing are its clauster, the tomb of Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo and the crypt of "el Cristo" under the main chapel. Opposite the cathedral is the square "Plaza Porticada" with several official and government buildings. This is a bussy area where you can do some shopping, for example on the lively commercial streets of Arrabal and el Cubo. From here you can walk to the square "Plaza del Generalísimo" where you will find the town hall and the modernist building of la Esperanza market. Follow your walk across the city centre and get to the Art Museum. Page 6 North Spain Cruise Close to the city centre are the fishing port of Santander and Puerto Chico port. The port is surrounded by several maritime buildings. Traditional cuisine with a modern touch and pleasant attention to detail. It features various dining rooms, including several private sections, all exquisitely arranged. The cuisine is based around three menus from which guests can select dishes for à la carte dining. El Nuevo Molino (One star Michelin restaurant) Chef : José Antonio González barrio Monseñor 18 - carret.,39478 Arce +34942575055 [email protected] http://www.elnuevomolino.es This old water mill is decorated in a rustic style and has large wooden beams. Beautiful hall with a fireplace, a small room for after-dinner drinks in what was once a chapel, two fine dining rooms and a raised granary used as a private room. Contemporary-style cuisine. Page 7 North Spain Cruise GIJON Gijon yields up one or two sights of interest. The old fishermen’s quarter clusters around the hill at Santa Catalina (that’s an old quarter rather than old fishermen, although there appeared to be a few of those in evidence too). Among the bars and restaurants here, you will find the Museo CasaNatal de Jovellanos, which as well as revealing some fine wooden carving and a number of good paintings by local artists, will show you what a period Spanish house looks like inside, with a glazed courtyard and a classic Spanish fireplace. Villaviciosa SE, 30km by road. – An interesting town full of Romanesque architecture. Emperor Charles V landed here in 1517 to claim his kingdom, thinking he’d arrived at Santander. While the local townspeople were surprised and delighted at this unexpected arrival, it appears that the future King of Spain was less than pleased at the error in mapreading. Cuidllero is a little fishermen village near Gijon. It is very typical an hasn't much changed in decades. The houses are built on the mountainside and it is so beautiful, it's really a thing not to miss if your are in Asturias. You can eat near the port, a three course menu with a bottle of wine for 12 euros and lots of great seafood. Page 8 North Spain Cruise DINING AND WINING IN GIJON Casa Marcial (Two star Michelin restaurant) Chef : Nacho Manzano La Salgar 10, La Salgar +34985840991 [email protected] http://www.casamarcial.com Closing: 01 january - 28 february, 16 october - 31 december, monday, sunday diner. The modest façade is in contrast to the interior, where the decor is a fusion of the modern and rustic. Creative cuisine made from high quality products. El Puerto (One star Michelin restaurant) Chef : Gonzalo Pañeda Claudio Alvargonzález, Gijón +34985168186 [email protected] http://www.elpuertogijon.com Closing: sunday diner. Contact the establishment to check this information. This restaurant is located in the heart of Gijón‘s port area with pleasant views of the latter, particularly from its charming terrace. In the dining room - which is contemporary in feel but with wood floors and ceilings - enjoy updated, traditional cuisine. Page 9 North Spain Cruise RIBADEO The Marquis of Sargadelos was the modern promoter of this city whose most outstanding building is the modernist Galician country house of the Moreno brothers. From the port of Porcillán, which is of Roman origin, it is a pleasant walk to the lighthouse of Pancha island, situated on the mouth of the estuary, passing the ruins of the castle of San Damián. On your return, there is nothing more gratifying than to delight at the seafood taken straight from the estuary, such as cockles, clams and oysters, which, along with salmon, trout and eels from the Eo, are the star ingredients of the local cuisine. Not forgetting the delicious sweets made by the nuns at the convent of Santa Clara. It is also a good idea to spare some time for As Catedrais, one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the Galician coastline. Its rocks, which form natural arches resembling a cathedral, create a magical landscape which changes with the tides, the high point of a walk facing the open sea. The iron-age settlements of the northwest peninsula The "castros" were a distinctive type of iron-age settlement in the area of Asturias, León and Galicia. Excavations of this pre-Roman site have uncovered the layout of the villages in the north-west zone of the Iberian peninsula. The archaeological site can be divided into two sectors: on the one hand, the acropolis, which was a large oval area with a sturdy wall located on a hill which served as a fortification; and on the other hand, the northern area where more than 80 small circular constructions are conserved. Between them runs a network of streets and squares. Page 10 North Spain Cruise DINING AND WINING IN RIBADEO La Villa (Two forks Michelin restaurant) carret. Spacious, welcoming guestrooms offering good levels of comfort. Page 11 North Spain Cruise VIVEIRO The Viveiro estuary is the biggest one in the Cantabrian Sea, into which the Landro river flows. Viveiro, at its mouth, is the most important city in the whole region of A Mariña. Viveiro has a very significant artistic heritage, beginning with the remains of its medieval wall, which withstood numerous pirate attacks in the 16th century, as well as fires and floods. Some vestiges of the wall remain, attached to houses or along passages, and three gates still stand, Porta do Castelo being the most significant because it bears the local coats of arms. Holy Week processions, declared to be of tourist interest, begin at the Romanesque church of Santa María. Close to the traditional street of Rosalía de Castro, we find the church-convent of San Francisco, declared a Historic-Artistic Site. A motorway leads from the monument to the top of Mount San Roque, where we can have a magnificent view of the estuary. To the monuments that we can see at Viveiro, we must add the town's open spaces, beaches, and natural surroundings, such as Souto da Retorta, also declared a Natural Monument, and considered to be the oldest eucalyptus forests in Europe. Its shores form tranquil estuary beaches with vast sands and excellent services, suitable for water sports. There we can go fishing, hunting and hiking, as well as enjoy numerous water sports. The marina and the lodging house favour these sporting activities. DINING AND WINING IN VIVEIRO O Muiño de Trigo (Two forks Michelin restaurant) Modias 2 - San Martín do Porto E - 15621 Cabanas [email protected] Closing: 15 november - 30 november, monday diner, tuesday, sunday diner. Contact the establishment to check this information. Perfect for a romantic candlelit dinner, this old watermill has been converted into a restaurant with two pleasantly rustic dining rooms and an attractive terrace. The traditional menu is accompanied by a select wine list. Page 12 North Spain Cruise LA CORUNA Situated beside the Atlantic Ocean, A Coruña is a historic city whose history has maintained close links with its old fishing and commercial port. The peninsula on which the Old City stands also contains the Tower of Hercules, one of the symbols of the city, which is an interesting Romanesque collection of streets, squares and medieval churches. The Aquarium Finisterrae, the Domus and the Science Museum are some of the places that show the more modern, recreational side of the provincial capital, which offers one of its most beautiful facets in the wide beaches of Riazor and Orzán. All this is completed with cuisine recognised throughout the country, marked by the excellence of its seafood and meats coming from the inland parts of the province. Although the origin of A Coruña could be in an old Celtic settlement, the history of the city began to be important in Roman times, when the port became a key point on sailing routes. A witness to this period is the Tower of Hercules, the only working Roman lighthouse and a real symbol of the city. Now declared a National Monument, it was built at the beginning of the 2nd century by order of the Emperor Trajan. The harbour has always been the scene of some of the most important historical events in the city, like the defeat of the English privateer Francis Drake in 1589 thanks to the resistance of the people of Coruña, led by the heroine María Pita. The early medieval town is bounded by the Coruña peninsula. In its lively streets, good examples of Romanesque architecture are preserved. One of the most beautiful is the church of Santiago. Built in the 12th century, this church, the oldest in the city, has later additions from the 14th and 15th centuries. Its broad nave of pointed arches houses a polychrome sculpture of the Apostle Santiago (Saint James) dating from the 13th century. Because of its architectural interest, it has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. In the high part of the early town centre stands another equally outstanding church, that of Santa María del Campo. The building of this old collegiate church goes back to the 12th and 13th centuries and was carried out by the Seaman's Guild. One of its greatest attractions is a visit to the Museum of Religious Art housed in this building, which has works from the 12th to the 15th centuries. For its part, the convent of Santa Bárbara (15th C.) and the pretty little square of the same name are registered as Historic-Artistic sites. The convent precinct, standing on an old hermitage dedicated to the saint, was later extended in the 17th and 18th centuries. Santiago de Compostela is the jewel in Galicia's historic, cultural and medieval crown. Santiago is this Spanish region's most famous and illustrious city and it holds a vast medieval district with many monuments and buildings of not just Spanish, but international importance. It is quite rightly regarded as one of the world's great cities. The city of Santiago de Compostela has World Heritage status and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Many of these travellers have an interest in exploring and experiencing this historic town’s culture, its unique buildings and architecture, along with its many districts and quarters, all of which have an historic reference. The greater city of Santiago de Compostela has a population of over 100,000 people and it remains a prosperous commercial centre. Santiago's original settlement dates back to the ninth century, as does the beginnings of one of the most spectacular cathedrals in the world. The city is also the resting place of the apostle Saint James whose connection with both the cathedral and town has led to Santiago's significance as the third most important place in Christendom. The cathedral itself is the final destination for thousands of Christian pilgrims who walk the "Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago)" pilgrimage across Galicia in order to reach this impressive city and visit the tomb of the saint himself. The cathedral though is far from Santiago de Compostela's only outstanding architectural icon. The old town is full of dazzling examples of Gothic, Neo-classical, Romanesque and Baroque design and nearly all are on a grand or monumental scale. Choose between the tasting menu or contemporary à la carte choices. These showcase traditional Galician cuisine alongside the occasional Japanese influences. Page 16 North Spain Cruise VIGO The port of Vigo, one of the finest natural ports in the world, was the origin of this city fringed by mountains. Its maritime qualities, already exploited in Roman times, have given rise to the present-day marinas and the transatlantic harbour, as well as to the fishing and canning industries. All of this has contributed to the urban development of Vigo, which includes the traditional port area and boasts major historic buildings and wide tree-lined avenues. The historic quarter, the so-called Cidade Vella, is articulated around the old maritime quarter of O Berbés, near the port. Situated in this quarter, which has Tourist-Historical Interest status, are the arcades around the Plaza de la Constitución, fishing streets and emblazoned houses. One of the main features of this network of tiny streets, in which most façades have glass-encased miradors, is the Collegiate Church of Santa María, the Procathedral of Vigo-Tui. Neoclassical in style, this edifice is constructed on the remains of a Gothic church burned down by the pirate Francis Drake. Also worthy of visit in this area is the do Pedra market, a fascinating place for buying and sampling Galician oysters. The newer part of Vigo occupies a triangle formed by the Puerta del Sol, Colón and Urzáiz. Lining the wide avenues are notable buildings, one such being the García Barbón Cultural Centre, designed by Antonio Palacios. The modern sector contains one of the best miradors over the Vigo estuary, the Monte do Castro mount. Located amidst the forests and leisure areas are the remains of the hill-forts that constituted the early settlement, as well as the ruins of the 10th-century O Penso Castle, the layout of which was used for the construction of the 17th-century Tower Castle still standing. The large Municipal Park of Castrelos is located on what once was the estate of the Quiñones de León country house. Amidst Neoclassical gardens and ancient trees, the Municipal Park contains an interesting collection of Roman steles, furniture and statuary, and an art gallery exhibiting European works from the Baroque period as well modern works by Galician artists. The park also boasts an open-air auditorium where key music events are held. The mounts of A Madroa and A Guía that lay around the city of Vigo provide magnificent viewpoints from which to admire the surrounding landscape. Also worthy of a visit is the Zoo, situated on Mount A Madroa, whilst the Municipal Park also contains the hermitage of Nosa Señora da Guía. Page 17 North Spain Cruise The Galician Museum of the Sea, situated at the Punta do Muiño in the parish of Alcabre, comprises buildings, gardens, a square and a wharf.
