Native Americans
of the Siouan family
were the original
inhabitants of Moore
County. They prospered in the region for
over a millennium.
Moore broke away
from Cumberland,
officially becoming
its own County. The
name was derived
from Alfred Moore, a
famous militia general
during the
Revolutionary War
who later became
a Supreme Court
Justice. Carthage also
became the county
seat at this time.
Southern Europeans
traveling from Pennsylvania and the North
Carolina coast settled
in the fertile farmlands
of Northern Moore
County. Highland
Scots migrated to the
southern part of the
county and began
manufacturing naval
supplies using the
area’s signature
pine trees

John T. Patrick
invested in almost
700 acres of land in
the southwestern part
of the county, and
strongly encouraged
the growth of the
New England inspired
Southern Pines and
Pinebluff areas.
After discovering
resort guests interest
in whacking small
white balls across the
resort’s cow pastures,
Tufts hired Scotsman
Donald Ross to design
golf courses, leading
to the birth of
the legendary
Pinehurst No. 2.

Airport Rd., Sandhills
Community College
was charted and
classes began in
1966. The college
had plenty of room to
grow and establish
itself as a respected
educational institution.
The college was the
first comprehensive
community college
in North Carolina

transfer program, and
it celebrated it’s 50th
anniversary in 2013.
The Raleigh and
Augusta railroad
construction came
through Moore County, providing transportation of pine products
from the south, and
allowing the Sandhills to compete with
the prosperous gun
and carriage industries in Robbins and
Carthage. This led to
the development of
other towns along
the railroad, including
Cameron.
James Walker Tufts
founded the Pinehurst
Resort, which was designed to provide shelter in harsh weather
conditions and
protect people from
contagious illnesses.
Famous landscape
architect Frederick
Law Olmsted, who
also designed the
U.S. Capitol Building,
designed the resort.
After several, less
suitable attempts at
establishing a permanent courthouse, the
present-day Historic
Courthouse was finally
erected in the middle
of Carthage.

The word palustris
(pronounced puhLUS-tris) is from the
Latin name of the
Longleaf Pine and was

returned to Pinehurst
No. 2, six years was
the shortest gap
between U.S. Opens
at the same site
since 1946. Michael
Campbell won his only
major title in a
surprising collapse by
two of the best
players in the world.
Pinehurst Resort
hosts the United
States Open
Championship for the
first time. The final
round began with
Phil Mickelson, Vijay
Singh, Tiger Woods
and Payne Stewart all
in contention. Stewart
calmly holed the final
15-foot par putt and
pulls off the win.

Pine Needles Lodge
and Golf Club was
the home of the 62nd
U.S. Womens Open.
Cristie Kerr won the
first of her two major
titles. Alexis Thompson
became the youngest golfer to make it
through qualifying and
into the U.S. Women’s
Open, at 12 years,
4 months.
The 56th U.S. Womens
Open Golf Championship was held at Pine
Needles Lodge and
Golf Club. Defending
champion Karrie Webb
repeated as champion,
eight strokes ahead of
runner-up Se Ri Pak,
the largest margin
in 21 years. Webb
became the seventh to
win consecutive titles
at the U.S. Women’s
Open, and the win was
the fifth of her seven
major titles.
Prepped and primed
by renowned women’s golf professional
Peggy Kirk Bell, and
her husband Waren
“Bullet” Bell, the classic
Pine Needles Lodge
and Golf Club hosted
the first ever Women’s
U.S. Open in Moore
County, setting the
precedent for Pinehurst’s prestigious
status in the golfing
community worldwide.
Annika Sörenstam won
the championship for a
second year in a row.

The Flyers’ remarkable
run to the NJCAA
championship in New
York state was not only
a great source of pride
for SCC but also the

Pinehurst’s legendary

hosted both the Men’s

Building Permits
Building permits must be obtained before any construction or remodeling of an existing building can be
undertaken. Prior to any work, contact the local
community administrative office for, guidelines and
permit applications.
Places of Worship
There are many options of churches and houses of
worship in Moore County. Currently, there are over 230
churches/houses of worship representing 29 denominations. Each week, the local paper, The Pilot, compiles an
abbreviated listing with locations, services and contact
numbers.
Business Licenses
Contact the local government where you will be doing
business to learn what business registration policies
are required prior to opening.
Pets
North Carolina state law requires that all dogs and cats have
rabies vaccinations after the age of four months and display
their current vaccination tag. There are different laws for
leash control in the various jurisdictions around Moore
County. Contact the local government office to learn more.
Driver’s License and License Plates
A driver’s license, good for four years, must be acquired within 30 days of becoming a
North Carolina resident. When registering for the first time in the state,
residents must bring proof of mileage, name of liability insurance company, and
policy number as well as previous certificate or title. The license may be obtained
from the Driver’s License Division of the North Carolina Department of Motor
Vehicles located at 521 South Sandhills Boulevard (US 1 North) in Aberdeen.

New residents must register a motor vehicle by the expiration of the time granted by the reciprocity agreement between North Carolina and the prior state of
residence (usually 30 days) or when gainful employment is accepted, whichever
occurs first. For a detailed description of what items are needed when registering
a vehicle and the fees required, visit www.ncdot.org/dmv. To register a vehicle,
registrants must present a valid North Carolina identification cward. Most
Vehicle & License Plate Renewal Offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday. A local North Carolina License Plate Agency is located at the
Town and Country Shopping Center on US 1 North in Aberdeen. For more

Voting
Voter registration is open to anyone who is 18 years of age and has lived in their district a minimum of 30 days. Registration forms can be picked up at the local libraries, the Department of Motor Vehicles, or the Moore County Board of Elections.
The deadline to register to vote in this state is 25 days before the day of the election. Forms that are received by the county Board of Elections office or postmarked
by the dead-line are accepted as valid applications for the upcoming election. Also,
agency and DMV voter registration transactions that are completed by the deadline
are accepted as valid for the upcoming election. Applicants will be notified by the
county Board of Elections of their precinct and polling place assignments.

Towns
Moore County is as much a small
southern town as it is a northern
utopia. Diverse life style options
are a result of the area’s unique
geography that’s claimed fame for
the world’s greatest golf.
Before Moore County became known for its golf,
it was known for its agriculture, textile and long-leaf
pine industries, and major railways that transported
the resulting commodities out of the county.
When Donald Ross came to the United States
at the beginning of the 20th century, he changed the
future of the area’s economy. Ross’s innovative golf
course designs took the area by storm, which affected
the cultural structure of the whole county. People
traveling through Moore County came to envy the
golf resorts and authentic southern hospitality, and
tourism established itself as a plausible industry.

The northern half of the county has retained
some of its “glory day” fervor by continuing to exist
as a collection of small southern towns. Farmers and
landowners upkeep the vast country landscapes that
facilitate the area’s popular agriculture and
equestrian industries.
The southern half of the county suburban-style
housing communities that value small town living,
populated with medical professionals, business
people, retirees, and young creative entrepreneurs
that promise to have an impact for decades to come.
There is great support for local businesses, and
the unique downtowns are thriving, as is the golf

Although more popular at big events and festivals, live entertainment
in Moore County is a regular occurrence. Residents have opportunities
throughout the year to catch a performance of the Carolina Philharmoic
Orchestra, and the Arts Council hosts a Classical Concert Series that
brings in talent from all over the world.
For those interested in more contemporary styles of music, Moore
County has regular concert series, such as First Friday in Southern
Pines, Live after Five in Pinehurst and The Rooster’s Wife in Aberdeen.
Many of these performances offer free admission, and are presented
by the county’s best venues, such as the Sunrise Theater in Southern
Pines. In the Spring and Summer, artists perform outside to accommodate
larger crowds and take advantage of nicer weather.
There are also festivals throughout the year that support local bluegrass
bands and southern rock groups, such as the annual Buggy Festival in Carthage and Farmer’s Day in Robbins.
For those who fancy live theater, Broadway shows, ballet and world-renowned speakers the Given Performing Arts Center at the nearby University
of North Carolina at Pembroke offers access to them on one of the finest
stages in the state. Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College
brings a variety of theater and the Ruth Pauley Lecture series. This series,
sponsored by the college, the Moore County League of Women Voters, the
American Association of University Women, and Moore County Schools,
introduces noted speakers to the Sandhills. The goal of the lectures is to
deepen understanding of key issues and encourage public participation in
their resolution.
Moore County isn’t lacking in the literary department either. The
Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities became home to the North
Carolina Literary Hall of Fame in 1996. This exciting cultural trademark was
made possible by former Weymouth Center resident, James Boyd. He made
his living writing and publishing, and has been accredited with launching the
“Southern Literary Renaissance” in the 1920s and 30s. Boyd’s former study
– now known as the Boyd Room – is used to host book readings featuring
North Carolina’s most talented authors.
The county’s artistic flare wouldn’t be complete without its historical
pottery scene. Residents travel across the county to browse the sprawling
selection of clay-made crafts in Cameron and Robbins. In fact, Cameron
hosts the biannual Antique and Collectibles Fair to celebrate the vast
number of local potters and antique shops.
Moore County’s art scene entertains the classics, and recognizes its
southern roots. From traditional art forms to some good ol’ bluegrass, residents
can engage in a variety of cultural opportunities throughout the year.

It’s impossible to describe Moore
County’s economic sector without
recognizing the financial
dichotomy that’s been shaped by
the county’s historic culture.
After the establishment of the Pinehurst Resort at the end
of the 19th century, the Southern area began developing medical
industries and educational institutions that cater to tourists and
retirees. In 2012, more than 5,500 jobs were a result of heavy
travel and tourism.
In northern Moore, the economy was focused more on
manufacturing, specifically textile mills. As that industry consolidated and relocated outside the United States, many of those mills
that provided good-paying jobs for residents disappeared. The
Convention and Visitors Bureau is working to promote tourism
for other interests, in addition to the golfing lure, such as youth
sports and pottery tourism, and destination shopping.

A New Direction
The county’s economic development organization, Partners in
Progress, has refined other economic priorities. Several initiatives
are designed to improve Moore County’s economic efficiency while
reflecting the interests of the county’s residents.
Partners in Progress’ most recent Program of Work focuses on
boosting internal industries and businesses by taking advantage of the
county’s pre-existing resources. The initiative derives from a feasibility study, indicating that existing economic growth strategies in the
Triangle could be successfully applied to Moore County, resulting in
the establishment of a three-year action plan.
The plan emphasizes the importance of supporting entrepreneurial talent, as well as local medical, manufacturing and
technology-based industry sectors through the exploration of a new
technology oriented early college or magnet high school. Partners in
Progress also hopes to further associate Moore County with sustain-

able practices by implementing local food systems and acknowledging
the area’s artistic and cultural assets.
In addition to further defining and developing the “retail hub”
concept for Moore and surrounding counties, there will be a lot of
effort made in approaches to create “work ready” graduates from
both community college and high school level education. Sandhills
Community College is adding four new technical programs this year,
and there is much momentum among public school administrators
and local advocates in creating an “Advanced Career Center” that
would have a dual purpose of both technically based and advanced
academics, and would be available to students from all public high
schools. The idea will be to create a hirable working group capable
of earning higher incomes than traditional service industry jobs pay,
thus encouraging the growth of company start-ups and potential
relocations of businesses with specialized needs.
Looking ahead to the next few years, Moore County is well
positioned to see a positive curve in economic and population growth.

Moore County offers a variety of public and private educational
|opportunities for students K-12, and is home to one of the most
popular community colleges in the state. The college is also
partnered with several accredited university programs and local
industries in order to ensure graduates a successful future, and
those going into the work force proper training.

Prior to beginning their journeys in Moore County Schools,
it is essential that all children have the opportunity to build early
development skills that will enhance their success in a rigorous and
innovative academic curriculum. Moore County Schools (MCS) is
one of 77 counties in North Carolina that utilizes a research-based
program called Creative Curriculum in all of its pre-school classes that
focuses on principles of early child development. Through a partnership with North Carolina’s Smart Start program, MCS preschoolers
are prepared for success in kindergarten by enhanced readiness in the
areas of reading, basic mathematics and social emotional skills.
In 2012-13, Moore County Schools began their Digital Learning
Initiative, a multi-phase plan of professional development for teachers,
which includes providing devices to all students. The school district
has distributed more than 7,000 Chromebooks to middle and high
school students for use both at school and at home. The purposes of
the initiative are to ensure students are college and career ready; to
provide opportunities for students to showcase mastery and growth
through the creation and publication of digital work; and to immerse
students in personalized learning experiences to collaborate, create
and publish, always grounded in the foundation of the curriculum
standards.
Growing to Greatness is the name of MCS’ Strategic Plan.
The plan includes strategic action steps within the four pathways of
culture, leadership, learning and community. The county’s 23 public
schools offer students challenging lessons taught by licensed
professionals with years of experience in the field and in the
classroom. In fact, nearly half of the school system’s 1,029 certified
employees have obtained a master’s degree or higher in their field of
expertise or in teaching.

Elementary, middle school and high school teachers engage students with rigorous and innovative teaching and learning opportunities.
District and school opportunities that support students to be future
ready include the STEM initiative, which includes robotics
programs in grades K-12, science kits for grades 1-8, CyberPatriot teams
at all three high schools, and summer STEM camps that introduce
students to STEM-focused careers such as computer programming,
forensics, robotics, engineering and chemistry; technology resources and
tools; service projects; clubs; athletics and the arts. The five leadership
skills that students focus on are accountability, service, adaptability,
teamwork and responsibility.
Moore County’s excellent high schools make it easy for students
to successfully transition into college. SAT scores consistently meet or
exceed state and national averages, and all three schools offer
Advanced Placement courses, enabling students to start earning
college credits in high school. Sandhills Community College even allows
high school students in Moore and Hoke Counties to take courses prior
to graduation exempt of tuition fees.
In addition to a highly accredited public school system, Moore County
has several private schools and charter schools, such as The O’Neal
School, Episcopal Day School, Sandhills Classical Christian, The
Academy of Moore, and Stars. O’Neal students can attend from
kindergarten through graduation at a comprehensive private school
with a focus on academic achievement. Episcopal Day runs grades K-8
and stresses strong foundations for life long learning.
For those who want to embrace a religious lifestyle in the
classroom, Moore County has Christian academies available for students. Sandhills Classical Christian combines a challenging learning
environment with a Christian based approach to develop high achievers
in grades K-12.
As a school of choice, the Academy of Moore, is designed for students who may not excel in a more traditional school environment, and
for 17 years has taught students from Moore and surrounding counties.
These schools offer alternative, advanced learning opportunities
for students interested in smaller class sizes and/or special curricula.
Opportunities included studying abroad, and flcusing on the arts or
sciences as opposed to standard, statewide learning plans.

Life
The southern half of Moore County is linked by
location to an important and growing population
of men and women in the US Armed Forces.
Part of Fort Bragg is in Moore County, and Pope
Army Airfield is only a few miles south of Moore
County. Camp MacKall is another training facility
used by Special Forces that borders the southern
tip of the county. Fort Bragg is one of the largest
military installations in the world.

The bases are the perfect distance away; far enough so that county
residents aren’t disturbed by daily training exercises, but close enough for a
quick and easy commute. That leads some soldiers, particularly officers, to
choose to live here with their families. For decades, a significant number of
retired military families have also chosen to settle down in Moore County.
It’s not only a great setup for military families; it’s great for the local
economy too. The county’s close proximity to several military bases allows
for several local defense industries. In 2014, Moore County businesses made
108 U.S. defense contracts, equivalent to more than $35 million.
Compared to 2013, this is an increase of 48% in the number of contracts
awarded and a 36.6% increase in the total dollar value. Along with the
continued support of the Moore County Chamber and Moore County’s
Partners in Progress, local defense industries continue to grow and thrive.
The North Carolina Military Business Center, www.ncmbc.us, and
MatchForce, www.matchforce.org, are valuable resources available to assist
local companies with military business opportunities. The local defense
industries bolster the economy to a valuable extent.
The Sandhills Military Wives Club is a supportive group in and around
Moore County. As a club they get together to have coffee, share advice, to
work out, have girls night, for wine tastings, to enjoy book clubs and to have
fun with the kids. All military wives, active duty or retired, are eligible to
become a member. Military wives are also busy working and volunteering in
the community, and a number of have started new businesses.
As a way of saying thanks to our troops, some local businesses offer
military discounts. Moore County has local chapters of Military Officers
Association of America and Sentinels of Freedom, organizations whose
missions are “to provide life-changing opportunities for men and women
of the U.S. Armed Forces who have suffered severe injuries and need the
support of grateful communities to realize their goals and dreams.” Several
military appreciation events are held each year.
Our close proximity makes it easy for military men and women to
serve their country during the day, and come home for dinner at night.
Many grow to love Moore County while in service, and decide to stick
around for retirement or to start new businesses. There’s really not a
better place to be stationed while serving in the US military.

Moore County’s small town atmosphere,
proximity to major metropolitan areas and airports, and mild winters make it an ideal spot to
retire. One in five residents are sixty-five or older.
The Moore County Department of Aging’s
Senior Enrichment Center is a fun place for those
fifty and older to meet and stay active. The Center
offers cooking classes, arts and crafts workshops,
line dancing lessons and many other exciting and
educational pursuits. Their nutrition program
consists of both Diner’s Club meals and home
delivery, is available to residents sixty and older
and is prepared by a nutrition caterer. Individual
and group exercise is also convenient thanks to the
onsite fitness center, which is equipped with both
cardio and strength training equipment.
The Sandhills Community College Center
for Creative Retirement offers programs specifically designed to mentally and physically engage
retirees. Fall and spring semesters are free to
those sixty-five and older and Summer Academy
attendees are charged a nominal fee. Choices of
classes and lectures include Financial Planning,
Healthy Living, Master Gardeners Lecture Series
and several other topics of interest.
For those interested in retirement communities, assisted living offerings are abundant in
Moore County. Retirees can opt for independent
living or 24-hour care nursing homes. Options
range from affordable apartments and single-unit
homes to patio homes and town houses. These
are beautiful, lively communities surrounded
by towering pine trees and lush greenery. The
wealth of world class medical facilities ensure easy
access when needed.

Gardens & Wildlife Areas
Outdoor activities in Moore County are as abundant as they are diverse. There are
recreational park facilities for children, and lush gardens for those looking for a pleasant
place to walk and relax. For residents that want more rigorous outdoor experiences,
Moore County has trails to be hiked and rivers to be conquered by canoes and fishermen.
Sandhills Community College Horticultural Gardens house one of the most beautiful
areas in the county. Their winding walkways guide residents through almost 32 acres of
gorgeous plant life and shrubbery, all of which fall under 14 unique garden themes. The
community college highlights historical significance by lining the trails with information
about the county’s most treasured botanical feat. The garden is also maintained by the college’s landscape gardening program. It’s a popular spot for family pictures and weddings,
and serves as a relaxing spot to get some peace and quiet without fully embracing the
natural allure of the outdoors.
For a vigorous trail-run, or some entertaining bird-watching in the area’s glorious
longleaf pine trees, head to the natural area at Weymouth Woods in Southern Pines. It
spans almost 900-acres and was North Carolina’s first natural area. Its focus is sustaining
and promoting plant growth and wildlife rather than facilitating recreational activities
like camping and fishing. Weymouth offers weekly trail tours, as well as special events for
wildlife enthusiasts, such as guided bird-watches.

Perhaps the most popular outdoor area in Moore County is Southern
Pines Reservoir Park. Exercise runs rampant around the reservoir’s 95acre lake. The man-made trails are great for bikers and runners that want
challenging terrain. Residents can get exercise on the lake too. Kayaking
is easily accessible, and fishermen can canoe on the lake for some quiet
pole reeling. The ongoing Deep River Trails project hopes to establish a
series of cycling routes connecting the reservoir to eight other counties,
spanning over 350 miles of trails.
There are several other lakes in Aberdeen, Carthage and Whispering Pines that are open to fishermen and kayakers. Head north towards
Robbins to kayak and canoe down Bear Creek, Cabin Creek or the Deep
River, which also offers river races during the year.
Equestrian & Public Parks
Those looking for something more competitive can check out one of
the 18 Moore County public parks.
Most have playgrounds for children, as well as public sports facilities
for those interested in baseball, disc golf, soccer, tennis and more. Several
of the counties municipalities have leagues and teams for adults, and the
Moore County Recreation Department ensures kids a place to play and be
active through their teenage years.
Not only were the Sandhills made for excellent golf; they were made
for excellent horseback-riding too. The equestrian opportunities are as
expansive as they are quality.
The most recent large-scale development is the Carolina Horse Park.
It offers over 250-acres of national competition venues, and its non-profit
status ensures local equestrian enthusiasts preservation of recreational
horse land. The park hosts the annual Stoneybrook Steeplechase which
recently celebrated its 63rd year and is one the premier national equestrian events. Local equestrian loyalists kept the event alive after competition
founder, Michael “Mickey” G. Walsh, passed away in 1993. The park also
hosted the American Eventing Championship its first three years in existence. It’s the only facility in the mid-Atlantic region able to host multiple
competition disciplines at the championship level, and the organization
brings an estimated $1.5 million dollars into the local economy.
Another prominent local equestrian facility is the Pinehurst Harness
Track, which covers over 100 acres of land and has 20 barns. It’s a popular
spot for winter training because it has sand and clay tracks, which also make
it conducive to host other types of events, such as dog races and polocrosse.
Farmer’s Markets
Ecological developments during the past few years have pushed local
economies to “go green.” Moore County recognizes the value of such initiatives, and has implemented several plans to support this transition. The
county’s Farm to Table cooperative has expanded, partnering with local
farmers to not only bring fresh produce and goods to consumers, but local
restaurants as well. Farm to Table has already brought together over 1,200
county residents who subscribe to receive produce that’s gathered from at
least 30 local farmers.
The new initiative is called Farm to Institution, and the goal is to
encourage local restaurant owners to use the same produce in their kitchens
that consumers enjoy using in their own. This, combined with Moore
County’s already active farmer’s markets, creates local environmental
awareness that enables a healthy lifestyle, and supports the local economy.

Ecology
One unique
aspect to what
makes the Sandhills
area of North Carolina what it is has to do with its
geological history. About 50 million years ago,
unbeknownst to anyone but sea creatures, the shores
of the Atlantic Ocean pounded a shoreline that ran right
through the middle of what is now Moore County. In fact
there is a trace of this residue of history that runs from
Virginia, through the Carolinas and Georgia, all the way
down to Columbus, Ga. Approximately 25 miles in width,
this sandy interjection outlines the ancient shoreline of the
Southeastern U.S., marking an east-west transition from
the Piedmont to the Coastal Plains of each state.

From a flora and fauna standpoint that’s important,
because it’s in these transition zones where life flourishes in
unique abundance, mixing plants and animals from the two
distinct regions. The soil of the Piedmont is red clay, that of
the Coastal Plain loamy and loose. In the sandy soils of the
Sandhills are found both in pockets, creating niches for plants.
The soil of the Sandhills isn’t soil at all, its sand which goes
down many feet deep. The pine tree proliferates here because of
the deep tap root, which reaches down to the clay soils beneath
for water and nourishment once the rains quickly drain through
the sandy surface. Hardwoods have shallower root systems, and
don’t adapt as well to prolonged dry conditions.
Native plants in the area tend to be suited for semi-arid
climates, rather than the moistness farther east and west. Only
in the transition zones will you find native cacti and yucca plants
growing wild.
Also due to it’s location, Moore County is right in the middle of a transition zone for northern and southern species. For
many, this is the southern extreme for northern plants and animals, and the northern extreme for southern-rooted life forms.
Throw in a relatively close proximity to the Atlantic coast
and the flyways they represent, and the result is a rich mixture
of birds, plants and other animals. A simple walk in the woods
becomes an adventure in seeing the tiny ground flowers that
abound in nature. A visit to a local lake might yield a sighting of
anything from a loon to a double-breasted cormorant, a bald eagle
to the tiny lesser grebe. This is truly a year-round bird watchers
paradise and a delight to anyone who truly enjoys the outdoors.

Blessing
of the Hounds
For the past 100 years, fox hunting and the Moore
County Hounds have been a fixture in Moore County, fixed
in the local culture almost as long as golf. Author James Boyd
is credited with starting the hunting practice and subsequent
“Horse Country” that developed after he built his home,
Weymouth, and invited friends and colleagues to come down
and build farms to winter their horses. Now there are dozens
of majestic farms in the area around Southern Pines.
A unique annual event called the Blessing of the
Hounds is ceremoniously performed in a large field just outside of Southern Pines as a prelude to a hunt. Riders dress in
their best red and black coats, with horses groomed and fitted
with their shiniest saddles and tack. Several thousand people
attend, some tailgating for hours, as the horses and dressed
riders prepare to take off. The Moore County Hounds is a
privately owned pack of dogs that board nearby. On Thanksgiving Day, the dogs get the blessing, and the visitors get a
beautiful vision of a time lost to most.

Golfing
Golf is and will continue to be the aspect of life in the Sandhills that
echoes literally around the world. While the US Open Championship to return

Beauty is a constant here, but perhaps nowhere more concentrated than at the Sandhills
Community College’s Horticultural Gardens, a
32 acre expanse of plants and shrubbery created
over a quarter of a century by students and volunteers. A walk in the garden is a soul soothing
experience, salved by the sight of butterflies afloat
and the sounds of trickling waters and songbirds
through the 16 distinct areas in the garden. Sandhills Community College, recognized as one of the
top community colleges in N.C. offers a master
gardener series of lectures, as well as continuing
education studies in sustainable energy and ecologically friendly products, and even a course in
floral design.
The gardens at Weymouth are also a visual
treat and respite, particularly as the roses bloom.
Volunteers lovingly tend the gardens and grounds.
Adjacent and complementary to the home is
Weymouth Woods, a 900-acre pocket forest that
is left in its natural state. Miles of trails reveal
the true Sandhills ecosystems. Both places are
particularly good areas for birders.

Volunteers
Volunteers play a huge part of what makes Moore
Co. such a vibrant community. Whether its keeping up
the gardens at Weymouth, helping at the hospital, or
coaching a Dixie Youth baseball team, volunteers add
untold value to the lives of others without expecting a
dime in return. Local business associations in the larger
towns contribute to the beauty and economic health of
their downtowns through volunteer efforts, raising money and donating it to good causes. Serving the community through local government boards and committees
is another approach. Animal lovers devote thousands
of hours a year to help agencies such as Moore Humane
Society keep the pet population healthy and adopted to
good homes.
Countless events are run each year by volunteers,
such as the Sandhills Race Series, a collection of fun
runs of differing lengths and Friday music events during
the warm months. Others volunteer with local schools,
the Carolina Philharmonic Symphony, mentoring small
businesses, and as ambassadors for the Chamber of
Commerce. Whatever your special skills are or what
area you’d like to get involved in, there’s likely a great

If there’s a place that loves their pets
more than we do, we aren’t sure where it is.
Many stores are open to dogs, businesses allow
workers to bring them in, and there are several
pet parades, especially on July 4th. There are
a number of excellent veterinarian clinics and
grooming services throughout the county, and
up-to-date boarding facilities make it easy to
leave Ol’ Spot or Whiskers at home, when it’s
necessary, without worry.

Backroads
There is a wonderful blend of country and metropolitan
throughout Moore County, with the cityscapes of Southern
Pines and Pinehurst blending gently into smaller towns,
pine forests and farmsteads. One of the best ways to see
the county, the beauty and the history of it is to get off the
main thoroughfares and take the back roads into less densely
populated areas. Walk the greenways, inspect the wayward
barns and buildings, get a feel for the land. Visit the town of
Robbins for an afternoon. Stop in a country café and sample
the fare. There is magic in the pines, and magic in the moments spent among them.
