WOOD PREPARATION
Stain the dough bowl with the
Minwax stain and let dry for a day.
Use a compass to mark the band on
the dough bowl measuring 1⁄2 inch from
the top edge.
GLASS PREPARATION
Wash the glass in hot soapy water.
Let dry. Wipe on surface conditioner

OAK LEAVES
With a flat brush,
sideload and blend
well to glaze the
outer points of the
leaves with Royal
Plum. Line the veins
with Sonoma Wine.
(this is the formula that makes the
PermEnamels permanent, so please
don’t skip this step). Apply the automotive detailing tape in a band
approximately 11⁄2 inches wide, pulling
on the tape to make it stretch as you
apply it, which will allow it to conform
to the round surface. Use your fingernail to burnish the tape to the glass.
Tap a makeup sponge into Ultra Black
PermEnamels and pounce on the
palette to remove any extra paint. Tap
onto the taped band. Apply several
thin coats of Ultra Black, allowing
enough drying time for your climate.
When you have good coverage,
remove the tape. Apply the design
when the PermEnamels have cured for
at least a day.
WINE TOPPER
Basecoat all of the leaves and letters
with Antique Gold, sanding between
coats to keep the layers smooth. Using
a small dry dome round brush tipped in
Straw, scrub the color off onto a paper
towel and dry-rub soft highlights in the
center of all the leaves. Reload the
paint as necessary.
LETTERING
Dry-brush line the center third area
of the letters with Straw. Cover less

Dip the dry small
dome round into
Rooster Red and
scrub color off onto
a paper towel. Gently scrub the color
onto the maple leaves in three places
on each leaf. You can add glazes of this
color floated on but the scrubbing
gives a less contrived look. Line the
veins with thinned Sonoma Wine.
GREEN LEAVES
Float Dark Jungle Green on the tips
and to the back of the leaves. Line
the veins with thinned Straw. Add
strokes of Antique Gold+touch of
Sonoma Wine.
FINISHING
Spatter the wine bottle topper by
using a small fan brush fully loaded
into thinned Black and by tapping
against a heavier brush handle. Always
test your spattering on a scrap paper.
This technique allows the spatters to
fall evenly instead of making a pattern.
You can mask the leaves if you don’t
want spatters on them. Varnish with
satin varnish.
GLASSWARE
Create the following mixes from
PermEnamels:
Mix 1: Dark Goldenrod+Citrus
Yellow (1:1)
Mix 2: Light Burgundy+
Olive+Black (4:1:touch)

Mix 3: Apple Candy Green+
Olive (1:2)
Mix 4: Rooster Red+Fire Red (1:1)
Basecoat all the leaves with Mix 1.

thinned Citrus Yellow. Add strokes of
Mix 1+touch of Mix 2. When dry,
apply several coats of PermEnamel
Ultra Gloss. This makes the artwork
look embedded in the glass.
DOUGH BOWL
Basecoat all of the leaves with Spice
Tan+Goldenrod. Apply several coats,
sanding between layers to keep the
paint smooth. Float with Candy Bar
Brown to separate the leaves from each
other.

onto a paper towel. Gently scrub the
color onto the tips and to the back of

Sonoma Wine+Dark Jungle Green (1:1).
To balance the leaves, load the
large dome round brush into Dark Forest Green, scrub off onto a paper towel
and gently scrub on the green tints
here and there on all of the leaves. Do
the same with tints of Rooster Red.
FINISHING
Spatter the bowl using a small fan
brush fully loaded into thinned Mocha
Brown paint and tap against another,
heavier, brush handle. Always test
your spattering on scrap paper. This

technique allows the spatters to fall
evenly instead of making a pattern.
Apply the spatters on the panel, allowing the spatters to bridge the distance
between the leaves.
Use a compass to apply thin lines
on the edges of the pieces and apply
several coats of the foil adhesive that
came in the kit. When the adhesive is
dry, lay the foil shiny side up, rub gently and lift off to reveal the foil.
Apply several coats of varnish. y

creating salt-glazed pottery. I
chose to paint a coaster set
with slightly different strokework on each coaster, but you could
make something as simple as a pin
(also shown) or a greeting card.

LET’S PAINT
STEP 1
To achieve the slightly rough texture of salt glaze pottery, stipple gesso
over the entire surface with a sea
sponge.
Double-load Cool Neutral and
Light French Blue on the sea sponge.
Apply one coat of the blended mix
over the entire top surface and sides
of the coasters and on top of the box
using the same stipple motion.
STEP 2
While the colors are still wet,
lightly apply one coat of Khaki Tan
to the surfaces until most of the gray
is covered and colors become mottled. Let dry.
STEP 3
For fine, even paint spatters, practice the spattering technique on paper
before applying to the surfaces. Dip
the tip of the toothbrush bristles into
water, lightly blot on a paper towel,
then dress the toothbrush in Dark
Chocolate. Point the toothbrush down
and in the direction of the surface and
spatter Dark Chocolate by pulling your
thumb across the bristles of the brush.

Paint the strokes with Deep Midnight Blue using a round brush. Create dots with your pinky fingertip or
the handle tip of a brush. Use the
photo as a guide to the number of
stroke designs that are possible.
COASTER BOX
For the bottom of the coasters and
the bottom and sides of the box,
double-load Deep Midnight Blue and
Light French Blue on a sea sponge.
Apply one coat of the blended mix
over the entire bottom surface of the
box. While the blue mix is still wet,
lightly apply one coat of Buttermilk
to the surface. Let dry.
Step 2
FINISHING
Spray all the surfaces with clear
gloss spray. Glue cork to the bottom
of each coaster. y
