3 Transform the way you see the world... David Pountney introduces the new season Our 2013/2014 season presents a huge journey for us, the makers, and you, the audience. The climb is steep, the path sometimes challenging, but the views are spectacular. That is why we want to lead you there! In the autumn the trilogy of Italian works based on our Tudor monarchs show how some of the most iconic figures of our history are transformed through the medium of Italian music. These figures acquire a new emotional immediacy through the breathtaking virtuosity of Italian vocal style. This is history re-written as histrionic vocal bravura – the giant characters of Elizabeth I and Anne Boleyn bursting out of their Elizabethan portraits to dominate a stage defined by visceral, Italian dramatic flair. Front cover Sir Howard Hodgkin 2012 Sir Howard Hodgkin is one of Britain’s greatest living artists. We were delighted when he created this unique painting for us as part of our new visual identity. Welsh National Opera would like to thank Sir Howard for this contribution. The spring brings another trilogy of works, this time united by opera’s fascination with women behaving badly. In the 19th century the rule was that you could be titillated by a woman’s outrageous behaviour for three acts, provided that she died a miserable death in the fourth, so that an appropriate moral lesson could be drawn. Today we focus instead on the intense struggle waged by women who dared seek the least vestige of independence, and experience their downfall as a moving personal tragedy. Their fate is part of the journey that brought us to the more equal society we enjoy today. The music transforms our understanding of morality. Music and religion have been linked since the most primitive rituals were first enacted. For a while in the 20th century religion seemed on the verge of becoming a purely personal question of belief. Now, suddenly, it is right back on the national and international political agenda. Two colossal works by Verdi and Schoenberg explore the power, the meaning and the consequences of religious belief. We are delighted to be performing Moses und Aron at the Royal Opera House, following performances in Cardiff and Birmingham, which marks the start of a three-year annual residency. Young people are welcome on our journey too, with specially devised programmes by our community and education department bringing alive the Tudor period, and exploring the difficult issues behind the exploitation of a vulnerable young girl in the Manon story. And Lothar Koenigs’ highly imaginative orchestra concert programmes throw another light on these fascinating and important themes. There is plenty of exquisite pleasure to be had on the way, but we do not apologise for the fact that this is a serious programme of work. Opera is a big, expensive medium, but it is also a forum of great ideas – ideas that lie at the heart of our experience of European civilisation. Tune in, and let these great themes transform the way you see the world. This celebration of the expressive power of song, and of the roots of the Italian operatic style that gave so much to the operatic tradition, will not only delight lovers of the singer’s art, but re-awaken our understanding of the dramatic power of these essential operas. All three works are dominated by powerful and strikingly emotional women, whose contrasted characters are beautifully illustrated in the energy and nuance of their very demanding vocal lines. Anne Boleyn, Queen Elizabeth and her deadly rival Mary Stuart come to life in virtuoso portraits of vocal display. Linked by the theme of our common heritage, the trilogy presents the opportunity for “total immersion” in this most enjoyable operatic style which so aptly mirrors the grandeur, formality and emotional intensity of the Tudor court. David Pountney 8 Autumn 2013 The Tudors 9 Anna Bolena Donizetti “I am truly excited by the Anna Bolena cast as I believe we will hear some exceptionally beautiful voices! I hope they will inspire our audiences with their dramatically intense performances as well as virtuosic singing!” Isabel Murphy Director of Artistic Administration New production Anne is the original Boleyn girl. Few figures in British history have dominated the imaginations of writers, painters and film directors quite like her. Donizetti’s re-imagining of Anne’s final days in the scheming court of Henry VIII is a touching one. It is a portrait of an innocent stranded in a nest of vipers. You will find it hard not to care deeply for her. Director Alessandro Talevi’s production will highlight personalities over pageantry, and what personalities! Anna Bolena is an exhilarating jewel of bel canto opera filled with poignant arias and moving duets waiting to be discovered by you. wno.org.uk/tudors Supported by a lead gift from Swansong Project Conductor Daniele Rustioni (until 6 Nov) Andrew Greenwood (from 13 Nov) Director Alessandro Talevi Designer Madeleine Boyd Lighting Designer Matthew Haskin Cast includes Anne Boleyn Serena Farnocchia (until 23 Oct) Linda Richardson (from 6 Nov) Henry VIII Alastair Miles Jane Seymour Katharine Goeldner Lord Percy Robert McPherson Smeaton Faith Sherman Lord Rocheford Daniel Grice Lord Hervey Robert Lyn Evans •All performances start at 7pm •Running time approximately 3 hours 30 minutes including one interval •Sung in Italian with surtitles in English (and Welsh in Cardiff, Swansea and Llandudno) 10 Autumn 2013 The Tudors 11 Maria Stuarda Donizetti New production What would have happened had Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots met face to face? A thrilling imagining of this showdown is at the heart of Maria Stuarda. Donizetti’s riveting opera transports you to a Britain at war with itself and overcome by uncertainty and strife. Rudolf Frey’s production shines light on the striking parallels between the two heroines: the imprisoned Mary and Queen Elizabeth; a woman shackled by the demands of office. wno.org.uk/tudors “Madeleine’s costume designs are quirky twists on period dress. Will darkness enlighten us and reveal all?” Jan Michaelis Technical Director New production Elizabeth I may rule the world but she does not rule her own heart. When her favourite, Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, is threatened with charges of treason she strives to save him. Should he ever be arrested he simply has to present her ring to ensure his freedom. The public and the private clash with fatal consequences in the trilogy’s final instalment as Elizabeth’s grip on the throne begins to loosen. Roberto Devereux is an explosive operatic drama that enthrals throughout, culminating in a shattering finale. wno.org.uk/tudors Supported by a lead gift from Swansong Project Conductor Daniele Rustioni (until 8 Nov) Christian Capocaccia (from 15 Nov) Director Alessandro Talevi Designer Madeleine Boyd Lighting Designer Matthew Haskin Cast includes Roberto Devereux Leonardo Capalbo Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Deshorties Sara the Duchess of Nottingham Leah-Marian Jones Duke of Nottingham David Kempster Walter Raleigh William Robert Allenby Cecil Geraint Dodd •All performances start at 7.15pm (except 6 October at 4pm and 11 October at 7pm) •Running time approximately 2 hours 45 minutes including one interval •Sung in Italian with surtitles in English (and Welsh in Cardiff, Swansea and Llandudno) 14 Autumn 2013 The Tudors 15 Explore The Tudors WNO EXTRA Make the most of The Tudors cycles with these very special events. the tudors and the national trust Fact and Fiction History has inspired great artists to create thrilling re-imaginings of historical events. The hypocrisy lies in permitting the audience the titillation of watching a woman behaving badly for three acts on the condition that she points up the moral by dying miserably in the fourth. The males in the audience in 19th century Paris were not above visiting such women themselves, but they still demanded that their wives and daughters were presented with an elevating moral lesson. The point about works of genius as against run-of–the-mill followers of fashion is that though they cannot exist outside the Zeitgeist, they nonetheless succeed in transcending it with the power and uniqueness of their artistic vision. That is what makes Verdi’s La traviata and Puccini’s Manon Lescaut such emotionally convincing masterpieces: within a conventional plot they find an overwhelming strand of human sympathy and understanding which lifts these works onto a universal plane. David Pountney 20 Spring 2014 Manon Lescaut Puccini New production Manon has been seduced. As an impressionable young woman she wanted it all. She wanted to taste the tempting fruit of adult life. Now just months later she has discovered that the fruit is rotten at the core. Does Manon have any chance of salvation? Manon Lescaut is the classic Fallen Woman. Puccini charts her rapid descent from innocent to criminal with feverish intensity. If you enjoy La bohème, Madam Butterfly and Tosca you will want to explore Puccini’s breakthrough hit and first great opera. By setting this production in the contemporary world we all recognise, Mariusz Trelinski’s production brings this breathless tale of obsession and selfdestruction urgently to life. wno.org.uk/fallenwomen Fallen Women 21 “I know whenever Puccini is in our repertoire I need to bring tissues to rehearsals, his music always moves me to tears.” Katie Heath-Jones Deputy Stage Manager Conductor Lothar Koenigs Director Mariusz Trelinski Set Designer Boris Kudlicka Costume Designer Magdalena Musial Lighting Designer Felice Ross Video Projections Bartek Macias Choreographer Tomasz Wygoda Cast includes Manon Lescaut Chiara Taigi Lescaut David Kempster Chevalier des Grieux Gwyn Hughes Jones Geronte di Ravoir Stephen Richardson •All performances start at 7.15pm •Running time approximately 2 hours 30 minutes including one interval •Sung in Italian with surtitles in English (and Welsh in Cardiff and Llandudno) •Co-production with Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa, Warsaw and the Théâtre Royale de la Monnaie, Brussels 22 Spring 2014 Fallen Women 23 Boulevard Solitude Henze New production “Alongside Britten, Henze is surely the most important representative of opera in the 20th century. Boulevard Solitude overflows with sensuousness and subtlety.” Lothar Koenigs Music Director Armand and Manon are penniless but in love. A cruel world of 20th century capitalism and corruption will soon shatter their happiness. They will be left with nothing but memories of happier days before they strayed onto a boulevard of broken dreams. Conductor Lothar Koenigs Director Mariusz Trelinski Designer Boris Kudlicka Lighting Designer Felice Ross Video Designer Bartek Macias Choreography Tomasz Wygoda Henze’s potent 1950s updating of the Manon story is a heady musical cocktail of jazz, 19th century opera and 20th century styles. Germont has realised that Violetta, the fallen woman he drove away from his son, Alfredo, was the best thing that will ever happen to his inexperienced boy. His realisation comes late in the day as Violetta’s health is getting worse. Can he repair the damage before it’s too late? La traviata is an attack on hypocrisy. It is also a life-affirming celebration of the fact that essential human qualities like compassion, love and self-sacrifice do exist. Most of all, La traviata is deeply affecting. David McVicar’s masterful production makes sure that few leave the theatre with dry eyes. New to opera? La traviata is the perfect place to start. Supported by the WNO Orchestra Circle Faith Summer 2014 A colossal subject, illuminated by two colossal works at the opposite ends of the operatic spectrum A colossal subject, illuminated by two colossal works at the opposite ends of the operatic spectrum. Nabucco was one of Verdi’s earliest “hits”, and the world-wide recognition rate of the famous chorus Va, pensiero would dwarf anything written by The Beatles! It is at the same time a drama of exile, of the power of God whose “moving finger” writes with such lethal authority, and a telling psychological study of a dysfunctional family in which, as so often in Verdi, a father/daughter relationship powers its central human conflict. Moses und Aron stands as one of the mightiest musical statements of the 20th century, Schoenberg wrestling with the existence of God, along with his own musical and religious identity. It was not an easy task for him, and it remains a challenging one for us to follow his complex musical language. But the rewards of perseverance are immense: quite simply, access to one of the greatest musical minds of the 20th century. Those who follow the journey to Moses’s anguished final utterance: “Oh word, oh word that I lack” have followed one of the most powerful emotional, intellectual and philosophical journeys that enrich our European culture. David Pountney 30 Summer 2014 Moses und Aron Schoenberg New production Imagine you’ve been told the most important thing man has ever been told. What you have been told will change the world and save mankind. You must now share what you have heard, you are God’s spokesperson on earth. Imagine, however, that you are overcome with despair that you find yourself unable to find the right words to communicate God’s will. Your brother takes on the role of mouthpiece but he twists God’s words. This is Moses’s tragedy in Moses und Aron. It is impossible to listen to Schoenberg’s masterpiece and not be stunned by his achievement. Moses und Aron reaches to the outer limits of what opera was capable of in the last century. It’s a sound so unique, so urgent that you might be forgiven for thinking that it has come down from heaven itself. Welsh National Opera is proud to stage this rarely performed opera in Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito’s highly charged production. Moses und Aron is a huge undertaking for both performers and audiences but the rewards will be extraordinary. wno.org.uk/faith Faith 31 “Moses und Aron has been described as ‘an absolutely unique conception’. It is certainly an exciting challenge. There is no doubt that it will be very rewarding for the chorus to perform. We started learning the score in the autumn. British Firsts Summer 2014 An extraordinary opportunity to re-engage with contemporary opera writing, and to transform our perceptions of new music In Summer 2013, Jonathan Harvey’s Wagner Dream launches our British Firsts series which has been made possible by a substantial grant from the Getty family. The series will present a total of five contemporary works over the next five years which will all be British stage premières. This gives us an extraordinary opportunity to re-engage with contemporary opera writing, and to transform our perceptions of new music. This series, whose titles – from Wagner Dream to Alice in Wonderland reveal a love of fantasy and fairy tale, will show us that we can enjoy modern music and modern opera as part of our normal cultural life, just as we enjoy modern cinema, television, books or fashion. It will open the doors to the landscape of the new. We hope to dispel two widespread misconceptions. Firstly that modern opera does not really exist. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is a massive amount of creative energy in the artform, and new works are constantly being created all over the world. Secondly that such modern opera as does exist is abstruse, remote, and incomprehensible to a normal audience. Whilst it is true that the hard line modernism of the post war years, in music as in architecture, alienated many people, this is no longer the case. Music being written today embraces many different styles and is no longer afraid to be audience friendly. The British Firsts series includes: Wagner Dream Jonathan Harvey 2013 La Chute de la Maison Usher Debussy (Completed by Robert Orledge) 2014 Usher House Gordon Getty 2014 Peter Pan Richard Ayres 2015 Alice in Wonderland Unsuk Chin 2017 British Firsts is generously supported by members of the Getty Family 38 Summer 2014 British Firsts 39 The Fall of the House of Usher Double bill “What a thrill to have some new Debussy to explore and to discover the new sounds, rhythms and experiences of a brand new work BY GORDON GETTY. Find out more wno.org.uk/takepart 029 2063 5062 COMMUNITY Wrexham Street Songs Over the past two years we’ve encouraged the people of Wrexham to see opera in a different way. We’ve done this by taking opera into their daily lives. In year one, we staged soap opera episodes across the town, popping up in the shopping centre, pub, market and bowling alley. You can see the results at wno.org.uk/takepart In year two we showed that music is just what the doctor ordered. There has been increasing evidence to support our belief that music can help those in pain, and our Singing Doctors initiative has seen singers lifting the spirits of patients throughout Wrexham’s hospital wards. In this third and final year of the project 2013/2014, as part of the Faith season, we will take residents on an operatic adventure to discover the wonders of their own town. YOUNG PEOPLE Streetwise Opera Welsh National Opera is a creative partner of Streetwise Opera. By offering homeless and formerly homeless people in Cardiff a weekly opera workshop we hope to give them a dependable source of creative and inspiring activity in the midst of chaotic circumstances. Come and Sing Over recent years our community singing projects have brought together people from different backgrounds and age groups through a love of singing. This year we will run a series of choral workshops exploring choral highlights from the operas we are performing. No singing experience or music reading ability is necessary; you just need a passion for singing. Visit wno.org.uk/takepart for more details. Tudors! Tudors! is a creative adventure giving primary school children a lively and engaging first taste of opera. The project, which accompanies The Tudors on the main stage, will take children on a time-travelling adventure to one of the most grisly periods of British history. This final part of the project will take place in National Trust properties as part of our partnership. Supported by WNO Friends Fern Hill Fern Hill is the latest project for the talented members of WNO Singing Club. Over the last few years, Singing Club has introduced young people with a passion for music to opera and has turned them into accomplished performers. Fern Hill is a setting of Dylan Thomas’ famous poem by composer Julian Phillips in celebration of the birth of one of Wales’ greatest writers. Manon Project The Manon Project takes the theme of our Fallen Women season, the exploitation of young women, to create a new opera for teenagers. Composed by Errollyn Wallen, the opera will give a voice to victims of female exploitation in Birmingham. 48 WNO website Explore opera online WNO’s new website 49 Theatre by Theatre 2013/2014 Welsh National Opera’s new website launches in Spring 2013 wno.org.uk 50 54 56 60 62 64 66 68 70 72 Birmingham Hippodrome The Bristol Hippodrome Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Liverpool Empire Theatre Venue Cymru, Llandudno Milton Keynes Theatre New Theatre Oxford Theatre Royal Plymouth The Mayflower, Southampton Swansea Grand Theatre 50 51 Birmingham Hippodrome PERFORMANCE DATES AUTUMN 2013 Anna Bolena Wednesday 13 November 7pm Maria Stuarda Thursday 14 November 7.15pm Roberto Devereux Friday 15 November 7.15pm Tosca Tuesday 12 & Saturday 16 November 7.15pm SPRING 2014 Manon Lescaut Wednesday 5 & Friday 7 March 7.15pm Boulevard Solitude Thursday 6 March 8pm La traviata Tuesday 4 & Saturday 8 March 7.15pm SUMMER 2014 Moses und Aron Wednesday 18 June 8pm Nabucco Thursday 19 & Saturday 21 June 7.15pm The Fall of the House of Usher Friday 20 June 8pm ON SALE DATES Friends of WNO booking opens on Monday 25 March 2013.
