Late Winter (V1)
Martin Bullen @ Chapter President
On the Road Again
Why is it that the itch to be on the road always seems strongest
when I’m stuck at home, during one of these seemingly endless
cold, snowy winter days? It must be part my natural wunderlust,
partially the expression of frustrated ambition, and maybe most
of all, because there’s something truly special about a road trip.
I’m fortunate to satisfy some elements of my desire to travel
through my job, but travel for work misses the most important
part of any good trip: Driving. Sure, I’ve managed to sneak in a
few drives in locations as diverse and possibly exotic as Brazil, the
Philippines, China and Taiwan, but most of the time I’m sitting in
a back seat (or worse, riding shotgun) in some poorly driven and
badly maintained vehicle, in the middle of traffic that makes rush
hour on the Schuylkill look like a casual drive in the countryside.
Now, while I enjoy showing the uninformed how to operate the
heating and air conditioning controls on their car, and lecture
them on the importance of wearing a seat belt while they’re
swerving, three-abreast, into oncoming traffic at 70 mph, all of
that ends up wearing a little thin.
No, what I crave, especially now, is to get behind the wheel of
my Z3, drop the top, and drive. Somewhere. Anywhere. Just
experiencing the fundamental joys of steering, accelerating
through the gears, braking into a corner. It’s the bond between
man and machine, the sights (and smells; it’s a convertible, after
all) that we pass through, and stop where I please, or not if I
don’t, that it’s all about.
I’ve enjoyed some epic drives in the Z3 over the 17 years I’ve
owned the car. A gentle 2-day drive up the Pacific Coast Highway
Over Drive
in California, then a more spirited sprint back south, early enough
to dodge the motor-homes and motorbikes. Cross-country,
and back, twice, cruising with the ordinary traffic a feeling like
a barracuda knifing through a school of sardines. The winding
roads of Napa and Sonoma wine country. Around Lake Michigan
(including taking the ferry across the lake). Beautiful back roads
here in Pennsylvania, soaking up the colours on a cool autumn
morning. All great experiences.
But it’s not just the drive, or the destination, that makes a road
trip memorable. The biggest part of what makes each trip I’ve
described a special part of my memories is not just the journey,
but the company for each one. Some have been alone, but
some of the most memorable have included father-son bonding
trips from Pennsylvania to California, driving in convoy with my
brother-in-law from the UK, back the other way, sharing our
experiences through FRS radios and over a quick beer and dinner
at the end of each day. And especially, sharing some special
moments with my lovely, and extremely tolerant wife.
We like to say that you join the BMW CCA for the cars, but you
stay for the people. It’s true in so many ways. I bought the Z3
to begin with because I loved the car, but I’ve kept it for so many
years because I’ve loved the experiences it’s brought me, and the
people I’ve been able to share it with.
So join me in creating your own road trip memories. Just as soon
as the snow melts!

She didn’t kick them in there. Why

My cousin remarked, after 5

was going to blow up that Pontiac.
I did. Twice.

Other interesting info:
I am a terrible car guy.
My dad tried to teach me the
mechanical things; I have memories
of an engineer explaining internal
combustion, timing lights, me
fidgeting. We did share a passion
for car museums, though. I could
stare at the chrome forms for hours;
I lost count of how many I have
been too.
I didn’t care. Instead, I installed
a disc changer, amp, Denon head
unit, and hand polished the faded
paint on my first car, a Pontiac J200.
But, DOHC, dude! Powder blue!
We did work on that car together.
Late one night, we had to cut into
My Grandfather taught me to
drive, in his golf cart. He was a
harsh teacher, and I was a pedal
stabbing spaz. I am still a peddle/
keyboard/button stabbing spaz,
but I am working on it.
I loved his stories of the gravity
races he and his buddy Wendell
used to stage in the Hill Country
of Texas, though. How far can you
get, no gas, from the crest of one
hill? No limit on speed at the zenith,
no brakes. He also taught me about
radar detectors.
And that big
American cars can go faster through
corners then one might think.
I had a radar detector within a
month of my license. Yes, a radar
detector for that poor old Pontiac. I
hid it from my father. Dad didn’t
approve of Grandpa’s lead foot,
or my earrings, or my oddness.
Grandpa had his ears pierced in
WWII, when he was serving as a
SeaBee in the Navy. He didn’t care
about my piercing, tattoos, any of
that.
360 on a sheet of ice. He made me
promise not to tell anyone.
I am a terrible car guy; I drive the
wrong cars, too fast.
My best friend called me the Killer
of Cars, but begged me to do SCCA
as I always threw whatever I had
after his Euro VW GTi (or whatever)
and kept up.
From his VW, I started getting
the German bug. I saw an M at
a dealership one day, and I was
excited because it was an M I could
drive, because it was an automatic.
The salesman told me it was a fake
badged M.
I am a terrible car guy; I never
learned to drive a stick.
I kind of tried to learn on a friend’s
Alpha. I FAILED on my buddy’s
street tuned VW GTI. I resigned
myself to automatics, or chick
sticks.
Then I saw an M coupe.
I knew I could never own a real M
until I learned manual, so I replaced
my auto Bronco with a stick, and
taught myself. I wonder why the
original clutch, at 180k, is giving me
My father loves convertibles, and
owned a string of questionable
decisions. An Alfa Romeo in
Billings, MT, a Fiat, and a couple
VW Beetles, one of which my
grandfather put into a glorious

It wasn’t the lineage of the marque,
or the engine, or the way it felt to
drive. It was the shape of the Z. Not
die Schuhe, that was wonderfully
odd, but the Shark that hooked me,
challenged me. The Z4 coupe was a
throwback and the future at once. It
echoed so many things- my father’s
little cars, but with a hard hat; Bond;
Blade Runner, Airwolf, Batman.
troubles now. Terrible truck guy, too.
I never really got the BMW thing,
aside from the 8s and a vague
knowledge of the M3, but the lines
on the Z4 Coupe. I never watched a
race or played in any race car games.
It was the forgotten exotics from the
car museums of my youth and sci-fi
in an impossible mash up.
Then I did the research and found
the M version; it was an M3 in a
missile body. I could have a ‘real’
sports car and aesthetics, too.
I was on a quest- one that lasted over
3 years- and I had never even driven it.
For the first year, I couldn’t. Some
say I still can’t.
I am a terrible car guy, but I always
go all in.
One night, a bot found a listing in
the right color, and I pounced. My
wife came home to me walking out
the door with my Lincoln title in
hand, telling her I was coming back
with my M.
That drive home that night, was like
a first flight.
I was pushed, no, thrown through a
hall of xenon by a hammer of torque.
I am a terrible car guy, and I could
barely drive it.
But I couldn’t stop smiling…and
stalling it. I already knew about the
M School, a family friend who loves
M3s told me about it. Joining the
BMWCCA got me a discount to M
school, so I did. I had to choose a
chapter, so DelVal it was.
That’s when I found HPDEs. I had
no idea. 1/10 of the cost of M School
and right down in NJMP? Drive my
car on a track, as fast as I could?
Why not?
6
I lurched around the track, went off
more times than I can remember. I
got lectured for dropping my clutch
and locking the diff, sliding through
turn one like an over excited puppy
drift on the floor. I was frustrated.
Then Martin Bullen took me out in
his track prepped M3, and my mind
was blown.
I almost wriggled out of the black
hole of this ‘hobby’, but my old work
colleague, Sharon Caldwell, and her
husband brought me back. Some of
you might know Jeff.
Suddenly, a year has passed and I
have driven every event I can get to.
I solo with green now. I pass people.
Lots of people. I want camber plates
and suspension mods. I visit VAC
like a trip to an art museum. I cord
tires. Wings, splitters and coil overs
aren’t things to show off at a car
show. I am on a ‘racing team’.
But mostly I met such a wonderful
group that is so patient with my
ignorant exuberance. Jason, Ben,
Lou, Ed, Dave, Josh, Scott, James,
Justin, Greg, et al., the whole club,
too many to name.
I went from stalling my Bronco in
a parking lot, to racing in Lemons
in about a year, all because of
BMWCCA DelVal. 2013 came with
a lot of punches, but nearly all the
highlights came from the tracks, up
and down the east, and all the way
out on Sears Point in California.
Thank you for the challenges, the
learning and the friendships.
You accepted me, my ignorance,
my…oddness. You taught me so
many things, thank you.
I am a terrible, enthusiastic car
guy, now.
Between trips to Vegas, my Grandpa
Ted would ask about my BMW and
my ‘racing’. He’d cluck, ‘Be careful.
You drive too fast,’ then squeeze my
arm and give me a conspiratorial
wink. I drive for the guy that taught
me to drive fast, my Grandfather,
who passed in 2013. I miss you, Ted.
I should cage his panther.

Classic Velocity Presents:
Munching at Maucher’s
A Del Val
Snow, salt, and freezing temperatures are
usually not the friends of vintage iron.
They relegate the machines we love to the
sidelines in places that have real winter.
Thankfully, we have guys like Dennis and
Bill that realize it is a public service to
relieve us of our cabin fever and arrange
some kind of Gearhead activity. And so it
was that we descended upon the premises
of one Gary Maucher, proprietor of
Maucher Auto Upholstery. This was not the
first visit (see The Undiscovered Bounty)
but the shop had relocated a few hundred
yards, and his motorcycle collection which
literally adorned the walls of the old shop,
was now more of a small museum space.
Vintage Event
Gary is our kind of guy. He is at once the
holder of a dream job involving vintage
four-wheeled vehicles, and a passionate
two-wheeled aficionado. By day, he
upholsters vintage vehicles that most of
us dream about. On this day, the shop
had an Aston Martin DB4, a Mercedes
300SL, a Ferrari, and a Porsche 356, to
name a few. The value of the vehicles
assembled in his shop was astronomical.
This speaks to the quality of his work and
the clientele it attracts. I try to be careful
around my garage so as not to add any
more “accidental patina”, but working
on someone’s freshly painted 7 figure
machine must take a special kind of care
and confidence.
in custom red, to an R1100S. There are
also a number of Harleys and a number
of Indians (he vintage races an Indian).
However, there is also an MV Agusta
Senna, a couple of Nortons, a wonderful
survivor Triumph, a Ducati Pantah, a
Brough Superior, a Moto Guzzi Eldorado,
and (my favorite), a Gilera 250 with sidecar.
And many more.
To top it off, he is a nice guy. He opens his
shop to a bunch of vintage Gearheads,
educates, answers our inane questions,
and allows us to wander about freely
amongst a lot of precious metal. This is
exactly the kind of guy you want to apply
his craftsmanship to your project, or to
have a few beers with and swap lies.
A separate area of the shop now houses
Gary’s collection of motorcycles. This
brings up another reason that he is our
kind of guy. He collects what he likes. This
is a guy who clearly knows enough to just
assemble the cream of the crop, but that
is not the sense that you get from talking
to him, or from walking around the bikes.
There are a number of BMWs from a R90S

Got Fuel to Burn, Got Roads to Drive…
By: Elizabeth “Speedy” Millinghausen
IT’S JUST PROGRESS…
OR IS IT?
I
held the phone in my hand
and my brain was flooded with
disappointment as the error
message popped up.
“This
application requires iOS 7.0 or
later.” I was trying to download
an app and the phone was telling
me that I couldn’t because I
had resisted the latest Apple
operating system upgrade. If
I’m being completely honest,
it’s not the worst thing that’s
ever happened to me. It’s not
even the worst sentence I ever
read, but what it meant was
that my friends were playing
with a really cool app that I
couldn’t have because of my own
stubbornness. “iOS 7.0 will ruin
your phone and probably your
whole life, so please, whatever
you do, don’t download it”, said
my dear friend who downloaded
it on HIS phone and was now

I had been forewarned. I would
be smarter, but as a consequence,
I would be denied a cool toy. It’s
a sad sign of the times.
If you must know, this

“Waterlogue”. Here’s what it
does: You upload a photo and

creates a beautiful and perfect
watercolor, as painted by an
artist, suitable for framing, or
much more importantly, sharing
on Instagram, Facebook and all
other manner of pointless social
media so that you can connect
and share with 400 or so of your
closest friends and show them
how much more interesting and
fulfilling your life is than theirs.
And they can be totally jealous
of your photo. Here’s where this
gets REALLY stupid. I’m an
artist. I can paint. If I wanted
to, I could turn every single
one of my pointless cell phone
snaps into a colorful semiimpressionistic offering. But I’m
way too lazy and that takes time
and patience, and why should I
when I can just push a button
and have my glorious little white
box do it for me? Trust me when
I tell you that the irony about to

us to be happy and willingly one of the single greatest sports watched this and said, “Wow,
plunk down hard earned cash cars (possibly THE greatest) of people must love Chris Bangle’s
for the privilege. All the right all time suddenly becomes only designs—look at the volume
buzz words were there, 330 hp, available with two pedals because BMW is enjoying—let’s build
never run out of brakes, perfect the decision is made that shifting our own really ugly car!” and
suspension…my throat felt dry… gears manually simply takes too they did. And people bought
could it really be? Hey, I had a much time, there isn’t much them for a variety of reasons,
kidney I wasn’t using…and then hope for anything else. And not the least of which is the fact
I read the following line: “Push that’s exactly what it is…a couple that EVERYTHING on the
15
road was starting to look equally
bad and when everything is ugly,
it becomes more difficult to
notice. Now we’re getting into
a weird area where engineering is
answering questions that haven’t
been asked and the population
is eating that up too because
no one wants to be behind the
curve. Oh, you mean I can
update Facebook WHILE I’m
driving AND text my friends
by talking to the dashboard and
bake croissants in the glove box
and keep my water chilled in
the cup holder and I don’t need
to actually DRIVE because the
car parallel parks FOR me and
blips the throttle when I down
shift and holds the clutch on
hills because I’m a sissy-pants
who never did figure out how
to deal with inclines because the
trying was just…well too hard.
Also, I would like 57 airbags so
that if I hit a parking curb I will
be instantly enveloped in a kingsized duvet and I would like it
to also get 50 miles to the gallon
and poop daisies so I can feel
good about my “awareness”. Do
you see a problem here?
I personally hate the idea that
any of this is the truth—that
anyone wants these things out
of a car…that people can be
this silly. How can it be that
any of these things are really
more important than that bond
between car and driver? In
much the same way I will not get
to play with the Waterlogue app,
I will most likely not get to play
with the M235i, not as much
due to stubbornness, but because
16
it simply isn’t available here. If
it was, I would feel conflicted,
but in the end, I know that just
like taking the time to create
a painting is a whole lot more
rewarding in the end, actually
driving a car is more fun than
piloting a rolling video game.
Not long ago, a friend had an
opportunity to drive
an E30 loaner while
his E90 was in the
shop. The E90 is chock
full of technological
toys: Bluetooth, hillhold, iPod hookup,
automatic
climate
control, etc.
He
thought that he had
become jaded and
would miss these
things while driving
the E30 for a day. Do
you know what he
missed? The volume control
button on the steering wheel.
That’s it. NOTHING else and
he fully admitted that if he had
to, it would be easy enough to
move one’s hand over to the
knob for adjustments. What
he actually preferred were the
simple HVAC controls. Am I
cold? Turn the wheel to red.
Am I hot? Turn the wheel
to blue and press the little
snowflake button. All other
brain function is freed up for
activity of actually DRIVING
the car.
Perfectly matched
downshifts. That bond between
car and driver that occurs when
the package is so simple and so
pure and perfect that nothing
else much matters. For me it is
that direct connection that is
the heart of why I do this. Why
I love this. I have a confession to
make. There is a flappy-paddle
gear box car that lives in my
driveway. And I do love it. I rest
easy in the knowledge that I did
not have a choice in the matter
because my 335d was not offered
in a manual, supposedly because
Also, I would like 57 airbags
so that if I hit a parking curb
I wil be instantly enveloped
in a king-sized duvet and I
would like it to also get 50
miles to the gallon and poop
daisies so I can feel good
about my “awareness”.
BMW could not come up with
a transmission that could handle
the torque. I’ve learned to accept
the car for what it is, which is
something of a technological
marvel, but when I strap myself
into my E30 M3 and we charge
up the esses at Watkins Glen full
throttle and I slip the car into
fifth gear at the exit of turn four
in a perfectly timed trackout/
upshift, I have no doubt who I
am. I am a driver connected to
the machine that I love with my
whole heart and soul. There is
no app for that.

The 2014
Delaware Valley
Chapter BMW CCA
A record number of members descended
upon the Radnor Hotel for our annual
banquet this year! If you were not one of
those present, you missed a great evening
of food, conversation, and cheer (along with a
multitude of prizes).
The evening started with about an hour of
mingling with old and new friends while enjoying
a beverage or two. Martin opened the banquet
with his usual charm even though his voice and
throat were a little scratchy. His English accent
still came through which always lends a touch of
sophistication to the proceedings! After reviewing
our hugely successful year and thanking those
responsible, all enjoyed a fine meal.
After dinner, our election chairman (back from
a recent Florida audit), Ben Greisler opened
nominations for the board positions for 2014.
When the campaigning was over and the smoke
cleared, Martin was re-elected for another term as
President, with Dave Wollman and Dave Flogaus
continuing as VP’s, Mike Dion as Treasurer, and Bob
Kelly filling the final board position as Secretary.
With those formalities out of the way, the mic
was handed over to the first of our two esteemed
guests. Al Carter, a professional Tudor Series racer and
B+ supporter gave a great talk on his experience in
becoming a pro racer along with some great on track
anecdotes that where enjoyed by all. After Al, Joe
McDonough who founded the B+ organization
that our chapter supports, gave a touching talk about
22
BANQUET
his son who inspired him to found this great cause
to help children and there families that have been
stuck with juvenile cancer. Though Joe’s son lost
his battle, his legacy live on and we are proud to
support such a worthwhile cause!
Of course, no banquet would be complete
without the Bob and James hour. This year our
sponsors and supporters really come through with
numerous outstanding door prizes. There had
to be over a dozen prizes whose value exceeded
$250, including several Apple products! It
seemed as though everyone that attended has the
opportunity to go home with something!
Fortunately, the weather was nice this year which
allowed many to stay and continue to socialize and
discuss their plans for participating in our chapter
events this year. Watch out for emails and web
notices for upcoming events and sign up early! You
will never get the most out of your membership
by staying home! If you missed our banquet, we
certainly hope to see you at one of our next events
this year!
