Bren Moran Award
Russ MacIntyre
The Bren Moran Award (named for Bren Moran who died October 13, 1975 at the Isle of Man TT Race), is given in
those years when an individual rises to the top and exemplifies “ the uncompromising dedication to the perpetuation
of off-road motorcycling”.
This year’s recipient, Russ MacIntyre, is most deserving. For years Russ has championed off-road motorcycling in
the state of Connecticut, often feeling like his efforts were unheard and unappreciated. He has monitored legislation
proposals to watch for those regulations which would adversely affect the rights of off-road riders, lobbied with state
senators and legislators to protect off-road trails and riding areas, rallied fellow riders, and advocated for legal
riding areas in a state that has severely limited public access to off road riding trails. He has been NETRA’s face and
presence at the CT State level. Russ has served for many years on the NETRA Board of Directors and has been an
active member of both the Berkshire Trail Riders and the CT Ramblers. Congratulations Russ!

Dual Championship Status
Congratulations to the 2015 riders who achieved dual championship status! It is difficult enough to ride one series
to the championship podium, but to achieve championship in 2 series is more than double the work.
This year 4 NETRA riders achieved this distinction:

NETRA SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Funding for NETRA Scholarship awards comes from a variety
of sources including family events sponsored by NETRA clubs,
families giving in remembrance of loved ones, and individual
donations to the fund. Any NETRA member between the ages
of 16 and 23 who is currently enrolled or will be (no later than
the fall following the award) in an accredited post-secondary
institution is eligible for consideration. This year’s committee
of Terri Nolette, Kevin Howley and Alan Tucker chose 4 NETRA
members to receive the 2016 Scholarship. The common thread
that ran through every application that was reviewed was how
NETRA fosters strong relationships and life-long friendships with
other NETRA riders, creating a bond where “parents become
parents to everyone, kids become everyone’s kids”, and there is
always someone to help out on the trail or in the pits.
Taylor Metsack is the 1st place winner. Tyler, a
member of the Nutmeg Scramblers, joined NETRA in 2006,
following his father’s footsteps. He had tried other sports,
but after attending a NETRA youth camp, he was hooked on
dirt bikes. He started as a Pee Wee, but has worked his way
up through the ranks to B class, and has made life-long friends.
An Eagle Scout, Tyler has become involved in many charitable
activities such as food drives, cleaning town properties, building
walking trails, and maintaining the local Veterans’ Memorial.
In NETRA he has participated in both the New England Classic
Charity Ride and helping his club put on a benefit for the
Connecticut Special Olympics. Tyler has worked at the NETRA
youth camps, as a Pee Wee Trail Boss and Jr. Enduro Trail Boss.
Tyler works part-time to help build his college fund, and hopes
to attend UConn next fall to study environmental sciences.

Zach Zins, currently attending Lakes Region Community College and the New Hampshire
Fire Academy in the Fire Science Program, is a licensed EMT in NH, and comes from a family
of firefighters, so his major was a natural for him. Personal experiences growing up helped
strengthen his resolve to go into this field. Zach has been a member of both NETRA and the
MVTR club since 2006, when he raced his first Pee Wee event. Riding NETRA events had many
influences on his growing up: he was required to make honor roll if he was to race, he worked
part-time to cover the riding/racing expenses, and the weekend events became a family
activity, where many friendships developed. He has ridden, worked and raised money for
the New England Classic, and worked many hours with the elderly in his hometown.
Rebecca Daniels, a member of the Norembega Trail Riders, is currently attending
Norwich University, a private military college in Northfield, VT, where she is majoring in
computer science. She chose the military lifestyle to challenge herself, improve her leadership
skills and in anticipation of becoming an officer in the US Air Force. Because of Becca’s
commitment to community service, she has been drawn to the recreational events sponsored
by NETRA; the fact that the fees collected are often designated for charities is something that
she wholeheartedly supports. She strongly believes in responsible riding – respecting both the
landowners and the land. She has worked to secure permissions for trails for the Ammonoosuc
River Turkey Run, and then worked to clear and mark the trails for the event. In 2014 she got
her motorcycle driver’s permit and was actually able to participate in the 2 day event for which
she had worked so hard, covering over 300 miles.
Katelyn Richard, a member of the Tri-State Trail Riders, has devoted much of
her NETRA involvement to the PeeWee Series, trail bossing the Pee Wee event at Indian
Ridge, working registrations, and acting as lead sweep rider. For the past 3 years she has
worked the Jack Frost Scholarship Chili Cook-off and Fun Ride, where she’s enjoyed the end
of season family fun without the stress of competition. Katelyn will be graduating from the
Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in June with a cosmetology
license. In September, she hopes to attend Either Westfield State University or Springfield
College to major in Criminal Justice/Environmental Science. Her goal is to become either an
environmental police officer or a game warden. One of Katelyn’s favorite parts of being a
NETRA rider is that she can ride with her father, making NETRA events truly family weekends.
(This year, Katelyn raced against the men, placing 3rd in the C200 class.)
