ANNUAL REPORT - Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati
Summer 2008 Volume 6 Editor: Sue Ann Painter Associate Editor: Joe Miller Design: Kolar Design & N EANNUAL WS REP OR T S APPLE AWARD 2008 RECIPIENT ARN BORTZ The Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati presents the Alice and Harris Weston Apple Award each year to an individual who has improved the built environment in a significant way. On May 7, the crystal apple was given to the Honorable Arn Bortz, a partner in Towne Properties and former Cincinnati mayor and city council member. Above: The Honorable Arn Bortz and his brother Neil Bortz, who won the Apple in 1996. The gala brought 300 people—family, friends, several former mayors, and CEOs of architectural, financial, and development firms—to the Hilton Netherland Plaza to honor Bortz. Turner Construction Co. was presenting sponsor for the gala. Towne Properties was the associate sponsor. Contributing sponsors were Cole + Russell Architects, HGC Construction, and One River Plaza/Miller-Valentine Group. Event chair Mark McKillip introduced Bortz, lauding his leadership in public and private life. He credited Bortz with pioneering the residential, mixed-use projects that sparked the downtown living movement in Cincinnati. Beginning in the Garfield Park neighborhood, Towne constructed the nationally acclaimed Gramercy on Garfield (1992) and Greenwich on the Park (1996), and continued with the adaptive reuse of historic buildings—Groton Lofts (1997) and the Lofts at Shillito Place (1999). His good work continues throughout Greater Cincinnati. In his acceptance address, Bortz gave credit to his brother Neil and the many fine architects and contractors who contributed to his success. He urged citizens to monitor aesthetic standards used in current building design, especially in public projects such as bridges and schools. Arn Bortz is the 39th recipient of the prestigious Apple Award. McLaughlin’s Shillito’s Department Store (1878) on Race Street. McLaughlin, one of Cincinnati’s finest architects, is featured in Walter E. Langsam’s biographical dictionary of architects who figured prominently in Cincinnati history. The Architectural Foundation is preparing the manuscript for online publication in October 2008. At its June 2008 meeting, the board of trustees approved leasing a downtown headquarters for the foundation. The site-selection committee, led by David Arends and Mike Huseman, chose a suite in a ca. 1840 townhouse, 127 West Ninth St., downtown Cincinnati. The office is the next step in fulfilling the foundation’s mission by establishing a presence in the heart of the city’s business/cultural district. AFC will move in early August. The phone number (513-421-4469) is unchanged. Above and Below: Design possibilities for Walnut Street presented by Group 4. AFC COSPONSORS OTR CHARRETTE Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood is dotted with vacant lots, which offer fertile ground for new construction. In January 2008, AFC joined the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Cincinnati Preservation Association, AIA-Cincinnati, and Over-the-Rhine Foundation to conduct a charrette on infill design at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. More than thirty architects and UC architecture students worked with community members to identify opportunities for infill design and construction. Teams leaders were Donald Beck, Andy Corn, Steve Hampton, Graham Kalbli, Paul Karalambo, Michael McInturf, Ty Provosty, and Jeff Raser. Michael Moose and Ken Jones coordinated the architects. Moose edited the report, which is available online at www.architecturecincy.org. OTR RE VISITED Ideas and plans generated at the charrette will be presented at a program at the Mercantile Library on September 4, 5:30 p.m. Public admission is $10; members, $8. More information and RSVP: 513-621-0717; [email protected]. AFC GIVES EDUCATIONAL GRANTS Above: Pierre Bourdelle’s murals are featured in the Union Terminal exhibit. Photo by Alice Weston from Architecture in Cincinnati book. In addition to funding its own education programs, AFC makes grants to area nonprofits for youth and adult out-of-school programs. Spring 2008 grants went to Architecture By Children for its in-school program offered by AIA Cincinnati volunteer architects; Cincinnati Museum Center for a free exhibition about Cincinnati Union Terminal, which opened 75 years ago; UC for a Summer CAMP introduction of youth to architecture as a career; Cincinnati Preservation Association for printing a guide to Over-The-Rhine; and Miami University to facilitate a student study in OTR. 3 2007 ANNUAL REP OR T ARCHITECTURAL FOUNDATION OF CINCINNATI 2007 MEMBER MEETING AFC members met on November 29, 2007, 4:30 p.m. at the Niehoff Urban Studio in Corryville. He thanked Alice Weston and Sue Ann Painter for the book’s publication, thanked Patti and Buck Niehoff for their generous support of the foundation and of architectural education with the Niehoff Studio, and congratulated Bill Woodward on organizing the Hammer Award. Moose recognized Gary Meisner and Mark McKillip for fine programs and outgoing trustee and past president Jay Chatterjee for his service. In her report, Sue Ann Painter noted that in 2007 AFC celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a luncheon recognizing founders. Kolar Design updated the logo and identity package for the 25th. For grants chair Don Junker, she reported that AFC made grants to Architecture by Children, University of Cincinnati’s Solar House build, Cincinnati Preservation Association, and the Betts House. Christine Schoonover, chair of the nominating committee, presented the slate. New trustees are David Arends, AIA, president and CEO, Cole + Russell Architects, Aaron Betsky, director of the Cincinnati Art Museum, and Paul Jacobs, legal counsel, USI 4 Midwest. Michael Moose, Keith Smith, and Alice Weston were reelected as trustees.
