WELCOME TO NDTA SEMINARS N E U R O - D E V E L O P M E N TA L T R E AT M E N T A S S O C I AT I O N THE NDT/BOBATH (NEURO-DEVELOPMENTAL TREATMENT/BOBATH) DEFINITION NDT is a holistic and interdisciplinary clinical practice model informed by current and evolving research that emphasizes individualized therapeutic handling based on movement analysis for habilitation and rehabilitation of individuals with neurological pathophysiology. Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model, the therapist applies a problem-solving approach to assess activity and participation to identify and prioritize relevant integrities and impairments as a basis for the establishment of achievable outcomes with clients and caregivers. An in-depth understanding of typical and atypical development, and expertise in analysis of postural control, movement, activity, and participation throughout the lifespan, form the basis for examination, evaluation, and intervention. Therapeutic handling, used during evaluation and intervention, consists of a dynamic reciprocal interaction between the client and therapist for activation of optimal sensorimotor processing, task performance, and skill acquisition for achievement of participation in meaningful activities. Cayo C, Diamond M, Bovre T, et al. The NDT/Bobath (Neuro-Developmental Treatment/Bobath) Approach. NDTA Network. 2015;22(2):1. CONTEMPORARY MODEL OF NDT IN STROKE REHABILITATION Instructor: Kay Folmar, PT, DPT, C/NDT Target Audience: Intended for OTs, PTs, and SLPs with no background knowledge of NDT. Change has been inherent in healthcare as a natural progression since its inception. This change has certainly been evident in NDT over the last 25 years. Some Bobath ideas have been discarded and others have been added as NDT, like all other rehabilitation approaches, must be anchored in evidence. This course is designed to give participants current information about NDT and how to apply it in clinical work with patients who have had a stroke. NDT can be successfully used for meeting the intended institutional and patient outcomes. Using the ICF as the basis for examination and intervention, you will learn to focus on the patient’s goals to reveal and remediate the impairments interfering with task performance. In addition, principles from neural adaptation and plasticity and task specific training will be integrated as key elements of intervention. Experiential labs and problem-solving sessions will be emphasized in the learning process. A post stroke patient will be presented for live examination, evaluation, intervention and discussion on the last day of the course. This information is essential to all therapy disciplines and practice settings involved in neuro-rehabilitation. * Seminars listed may be adapted to meet the needs of the host. In addition, instructors are able to create customized seminars when requested. 3 N E U R O - D E V E L O P M E N TA L T R E AT M E N T A S S O C I AT I O N NDTA ADULT SEMINARS N E U R O - D E V E L O P M E N TA L T R E AT M E N T A S S O C I AT I O N NDTA ADULT SEMINARS NDT NURSING LEVEL 1: MAKING THE BIGGEST IMPACT IN NEUROSCIENCE AND REHABILITATION NURSING Instructor: Jason Knox, PT, C/NDT Target Audience: Intended for nursing staff (MSN-RN, BSN-RN, ASN-RN, LPN, CNA). Do you know where you are going in your therapy sessions with your patients? Are your patients getting what they want out of therapy? Getting to outcomes in therapy depends on making a route (plan) from the starting place (assessment) to the destination (the goal the patient chooses). This intermediate course is designed to help therapists working with stroke patients understand the making of a therapy map! An NDT based assessment starts with an individual’s unique life roles/tasks and ends with a data set to launch therapy. A core competency of NDT is to produce an impairment list that explains the patient’s functional losses. From that starting point, a plan must be executed to reduce the impact of impairment, restore function, and get the outcomes you expect and the patient wants.
