Kilkenny GAA Coaching and Games Developments 2012
Introduction
Each year, Kilkenny GAA’s Coaching and Games Development Committee
organises a comprehensive programme of events for our Juvenile Players,
Coaches and Administrators.
We have combined all the relevant areas to ensure all involved are aware in
advance of the programme of events. Then, the relevant personnel can plan
their activities accordingly.
This structure will, we hope, ensure best practices are adhered to, so as to
ensure our young players are given the opportunity to develop at their own
particular rate and ensure as many of our young players have fulfilling
experiences while participating in Gaelic Games and will therefore remain
actively involved in our National Games which ties in with our own “Long Term
Player Development Plans” (See Coaching Resource Second Edition) and the
GAA’s Grassroots to National Programme (GNP).
This year, as a follow on to our “Go Games” Plans, we are again, meeting all
clubs early in the season to ensure we are all on the same path of ensuring our
Young Players get as much game time as possible as their start out on their
playing careers. Indeed, the first few years are vital in a players development
so we have to ensure each player who attends our underage coaching
sessions receive appropriate opportunities to play the game, be it in a Club
Parish “Street League” or in their Club jersey. To assist clubs organize their
own Blitz Days we have compiled a list of club contacts for each club,at each
age group, for the coming season.
We are also, this year, offering clubs the opportunity to recruit a Juvenile Club
Coaching Co-Ordinator, and, Juvenile Clubs, the opportunity to attain a “Club
Cill Chainnigh” Award Flag for exhibiting, promoting and developing “Best
Practices” for all our juvenile players. Certain criteria have to be attained by
clubs to avail of this Award. We certainly envisage clubs will strive to achieve
this over the coming season.
This booklet is produced to compliment the trojan work being completed
annually at all levels of the Association in Kilkenny, and without whose input we
could not ensure the GAA remains to the forefront of not only of our own
Communities, at local level, but Nationally, also.
We would like to wish you all the best in your GAA activities, during the coming
season.

We would ask coaches with our Underage clubs to ensure “Young
Referees” (U-18’s) are used during the “Go Games” to enable the county
to unearth potential Adult referees in the future.
At the end of Hurling games we are asking ALL clubs to play two Ten
Minute a half of Gaelic Football, using the Primary School conditions of
One Hop, One Solo.
Best of Luck for 2012.

GO Games 2012
The U-10 Festival Finals are planned for Saturday 9th and Saturday the 16th
June.
The U-12 Festival Finals are planned for Saturday 25th August and Saturday
the 1st September.
We would ask clubs to take note of all the Fixture Dates and avoid clashing
with them when you are arranging your own Club Blitzes or invited to
participate in another Club's Blitzes during the year.
First named team has home venue, and we would ask Club Coaches to ensure
the Home Team touches base with their opponents during the week of the
game to ensure :
(1)
Clubs know the game is going ahead !!!
(2)
So that the Home team can have a Second/Third Pitch (dependent on
numbers - that can be checked when contacting the opposing teams
mentor) prepared in advance to ensure all players are playing or at least
on a rotational basis.
(3)
Games to be refereed by a Minor Player.
(4)
Encourage Players and MENTORS to shake hands before and after the
game.

Games Based Training
Mini Games And Games Related Activity
Every single “play” in a game of hurling can be used to highlight weaknesses or
highlight good play for your team. Each occasion a puck out is taken, phases of
play develop, which can be used in assisting you to devising a session which
will aim to improve your teams play. It is therefore one of the major challenges,
we face as Coaches, to be able to ensure that the information we gather to use
in our Coaching sessions be Game Related , relevant and applicable to what
we all aim to achieve at the next game . i.e Improved Performance. And what a
challenge that is ……
Each time we head to the field, we as Coaches, should have a “Goal” for our
session, so therefore looking closely at what is happening and planning how to
rectify problems has to be part of your Coaching “armoury”.
Considering we have players training for 6 months or longer during a season
there is time for us to cover all the skills/plays which occur in our games.
Only by analyzing what happens with your team can you plan sessions relevant
to your team. Ideally we would hope to build those Games Related activities to
be part of our sessions.
A coach should never lose focus on our overall aim to improve individual/teams
performance and thereby increasing our chances of WINNING.
And when results are not going your way, remember that “Coaching is a
journey” and that “The Longest journey starts with the smallest step …….”
Therefore with the focus on “Games Related” activities we have put together a
selection of Games Related Activities which could be of benefit to you during
the season/s ahead.
