(IHN 2012) | Nordic Wood Construction Conference
30–31st of August 2012 | Linnaeus University Växjö
New construction in a new age
Building construction in Sweden is a slow process and is expensive; a problem
that almost certainly exists in the rest of Scandinavia as well as in other parts of
Europe. Building costs are in line with inflated house prices and leave a productivity growth rate at a very low level.
This primarily affects our young people, senior citizens and single people who
are all part of the small household category. With increased competition, more
local actors, and most importantly the industrialisation of timber construction
we can create a market that provides good homes for small households.
Below, an outline of the preliminary program for the first International HolzbauForum Nordic in Växjö 12, Sweden, is presented. Each block is made up of three
or four presentations followed by a panel discussion.
The lectures will be held mostly in English.
Wednesday, 29th of August 2012

Block 1: Timber building in Scandinavia and Europe:
State of the art
The role of timber building differs from country to country. How has it developed
in the Nordic and other European Countries over the past years? What is the
position of timber construction today and how do we want it to develop and
how must it be developed in the future?

Block 5: Building systems for high-rise timber
constructions
There are many techniques for the construction of timber high-rise buildings. Take part in this block where experts tell us about timber construction’s
various methods and the benefits of certain techniques, compared with the
industry’s standard technique.

Block 7: Production in single-family home companies
demands new thinking: higher value for less work!
Starting with the market and the consumer’s needs, products and productions
have to be developed to satisfy those needs. That is nothing revolutionary in
itself; however, producers of one- and two-family houses work very traditionally when manufacturing their products. How can the linkage between the
market, the product and the production be improved to add greater value for
the consumer, whilst reducing the amount of work required?

Block 8: Architecture of Necessity
Timber as a building material means a great deal to our climate issues
with its characteristic of lowering CO2 emissions and good energy values
throughout its entire cycle: from factory production to construction site and
through all its phases of use. But how important is timber in relation to the
ever-growing concept of "Architecture of Necessity"?

only basic knowledge, but also cutting edge skills within the relevant areas.
How can such knowledge be built up and distributed for the public good?

Block 12: Europe and Scandinavia: what can we
learn from each other?
When in Rome, do as the Romans do! This should also be true within the
construction industry, when a company tries to launch their products on
foreign markets. Yet, export-related problems have always occurred, often
based on ignorance of the new market, or a nonchalant attitude toward
other’s ways. How can we get closer to each other and take a greater market
share that we should be taking from other materials?
