FROM THE HEADMASTER...
Dear Parents,
Everest’s 60th Anniversary
To celebrate the 60th anniversary since the first human ascent to the summit of Mount Everest, Northbourne Park
invited Dr Rob Casserley MBBS MRCS to speak at an extended assembly just before half term. Dr Casserley is a
former surgeon and now general practitioner with a specialist interest in altitude & expedition medicine and is cofounder of trek8848. He has summited Everest 7 times, (!!) including double summits in spring 2007 and spring
2010 and is the first ever Western climber to have achieved this feat. On his way from Quebec to speak at the
Cranbrook School Speech Day, he paid us a visit, thrilling the children with his motivational talk on what it is really
like to climb the world’s highest mountain.
Church Fête
Despite the weather, the children had a lovely time on the Friday before half term. Thank you to all of our parents
who helped their children with stalls and with donations. Once again the creativity and fun were outstanding. The
prize for the most abstract stall goes to the chick racing stall and the results will be tweeted later! The total raised
was £770.54, which we will split between the School Church fund and Road of Smiles.
Common Entrance Examination
After half term we went straight into
Examination Week for all of our
pupils in Year 3 – 8. Well done to
Year 8 on their excellent approach
to the Common Entrance
examinations and to Year 7 on their
first attempts at CE papers. They all
took the exams in their stride and
ensured that they had a chance to
show off their hard work. Once
again, I am confident that they will
all have got into the Senior School
of their choice. We are still waiting
for the Lycée examination results to
come through for our 6e and 5e
children and wish them the best of
luck for these.
Tigertones (Thursday)
The Princeton Tigertones thrilled us
with a wonderful concert last
Thursday and it was great to
welcome the boys back to the
school to sing. It is always lovely to
welcome so many of our past pupils
and parents back to the school.

or two.

Term Headmaster Commendations during Week 8:-
…was the best that I can remember, not only because
of the four records broken or because of the level of
individual and collaborative achievement, but in the
comradeship and sportsmanship demonstrated by all of
our pupils. I was extremely proud of our athletes and
very touched that Sports Day was a day which saw the
pupils demonstrate so much empathy and teamwork.
My thanks go, as ever, to Mr Riley, the sports staff,
caterers, grounds staff and the Friends who poured
Pimms like there was no tomorrow! Thank you all for
coming to enjoy such a wonderful Northbourne Park
day!.. which was swiftly followed by..
Informal concert (Sunday)
Our informal concert saw 37 acts in quick succession,
punctuated by a multitude of creative bows. Well done

undergone an Intermediate Boarding Inspection by the
Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). Thank you to
our boarding parents for their very useful feedback and
for completing the on-line questionnaires for the
inspectors. The inspection is on the National Minimum
Standards for Boarding and will give a pass or fail result,
rather than a rating (such as good or outstanding) as
we saw in our ISI Inspection.
Trips week
The excitement builds, the packing has begun and the
seniors wait with bated breath for Saturday and the first
of our PGL departures. We wish them and all the other
children going on trips a ‘bon voyage’. Many thanks to
Priscilla Smith for the excellent organisation of Trips
Week and to all staff involved. The intermediates and
juniors have a wonderful week ahead of them and I am
looking forward to reading the Story of Tailypoo round
the campfire!
Please note that there is no Saturday school on
22nd June for Years 4/5 & 6 children.
Road of Smiles Day
On the Tuesday after Trips Week, we are holding our
Road of Smiles Day, in support of this worthy charity.
More details will be forthcoming and I hope the
children will gain a lot from this cross-curricular day,
which culminates in the annual Northbourne Park
Swimathon. Please do come along and support at the
pool in the afternoon!
Thank you for your ongoing support during this busy
month. I am not sure how you all manage to juggle
your children’s busy school lives with your own busy
home and professional lives but, somehow, you do and
it is lovely to see so many of you at so many of our
events. We all appreciate it.

PARTY IN THE PARK
Saturday 29th June - 6.30pm onwards UPDATE
Hog roast for the adults, hot dogs for the children and salad, all for the
price of £10 per ticket (4 people per ticket).
There will be Ice creams, a Champagne Raffle and a Friends Bar plus a
Disco!
All we ask you to do is to bring your own chairs, picnic rugs and
desserts if desired - as this is a family event do let the children bring
any outdoor games or pop up play tents if they would like to.

News from the Boarding House
Hello and a slightly belated welcome back to
the second half of the Summer term! Since the
previous instalment, life as always has been
very active for the boarders. They began after
half term with their Exam Week so it was a
fairly tiring week of study and focus. However,
it seems that the hard work and revision has
paid off and we had a great few days
afterwards to make up for the tough week.
The excitement began on Thursday evening
with a visit from the Princeton Tigertones.
This is a men’s acapella group formed of
students from Princeton University, USA, who
are incredibly talented and very entertaining
and who were very popular particularly with
the girls! All of the boarders joined with
parents, staff and other peers to watch the
group perform a variety of songs, the highlight
for the children being the moment where the
Emily's Birthday & Year7 Taster Night
singers pulled Cameron and Fiona out from
the crowd to dance in front of the assembled masses to the hilarity of all! After the purchase of several CDs, the
boarders have been enjoying reminders of the performance throughout the week.
The weekend followed, bringing with it a fabulous Sports Day on Saturday afternoon which enjoyed dry weather
with moments of lovely sunshine! The boarders also shone! To witness them putting their hearts and souls into
their races and events was very special. Whatever results they achieved, we felt very proud of them all. The
boarders secured many high scores for their houses in both the field and track events and we were also lucky
enough to have a record-breaker in our midst. Jean-Baptiste set not one, but three new records, one of which was
in the 1500m on Friday afternoon, congratulations to him as well as the many other children who excelled in their
events! Thank you to the many boarding families who attended the event.
The evening was a little calmer with time to relax in the boarding houses. This mainly involved ‘lounging’ and
watching a DVD or the final of Britain’s Got Talent while munching on popcorn, a well-deserved treat.
We began Sunday with a few achy legs (staff included after their relay races against the parents!) and made our
way to church. After lunch, when we were all feeling a little more awake, we visited Sandwich in a slight change to
our original weekend plans. However, this was an opportunity which we could not miss as Sandwich held host to
‘Le Weekend’. An event celebrating French culture with market stalls and entertainment which delighted our
boarders, particularly the French children! They were able to sample and purchase French foods, including some
rather smelly cheeses, visit craft stalls and partake in various activities. There were also some stalls where the
children were able to win prizes… and it seems our boarders were rather good at this as we have returned to
school the proud owners of 6 goldfish!!
On Sunday evening it was time for the pupils of Northbourne Park to show even more of their talent, this time not
on the running track, but in the Informal Concert. Here, once again, some of the boarders performed amongst
their peers, entertaining the audience with lovely piano pieces. We have further musical entertainment this week
from the School Band, which includes some of the boarders, who will be performing with the Railway Swing Band
in Sandwich.
Also this week the visiting ISI inspectors have enjoyed chatting with the children and finding out about boarding
life at NPS. We have our fingers crossed for a very positive outcome and will let you know how we get on. We have
also begun packing for Trips Week next week and it is fair to say the children are very excited for their upcoming
adventures.
Finally, I would just like to say a big thank you to Emily’s mum for providing some very tasty birthday cupcakes for
our Yr7 Boarding Taster Night. All of the visiting boys and girls had a fun evening and in the girls’ house we
particularly enjoyed celebrating Emily’s birthday- as you can see from the photograph!

Pre-Prep News
FROM THE HEAD OF PRE-PREP
Welcome back to the last half-term of the year.
Unfortunately, the weather is rather unseasonal
which has affected our swimming lessons.
However, we are hopeful it will improve over
the next few weeks. The children are looking
forward to the Road of Smiles event this week
and the various trips to come. We have started
practising for Sports Day and look forward to
seeing parents and grandparents at this event
(fingers crossed for fine weather!).
End of year reports will be sent home on Friday
21st June, and we would be very grateful for
your feedback using the comment sheet which
will be enclosed.
Thank you to everyone who came to our Quiz
Night last week, it really was great fun and we
raised £164 which we will use to towards the
purchase of a new bike for the garden. Thanks
to Richard Smith for being setting the questions
and being a brilliant quiz master!
The last few weeks of term promise to be very
busy, so please keep a close eye on the calendar
for all the events coming up.

Bourne to Have Fun!
We are delighted to be running a Summer
Activity Club at the Pre-Prep during three weeks
of the summer holidays, with two weeks in July
and one in August. Please let Mandy have your
bookings forms with payment by 25th June to
take advantage of the Early Bird discount
(childcare vouchers can be used as full or part
payment). This is open to any children age 3-8
years, so if you know anyone outside the school
who would be interested please do pass on the
information. Also, If you know of anywhere that
flyers could be placed / displayed, please let
Mandy know.
Class 2 trip to White Mill
Class 2 recently spent a happy morning at the
White Mill, near Sandwich. This trip neatly
combined two of our topics: Victorians, and
Forces. First we visited the miller’s cottage, filled
with Victorian objects and furniture. We
wondered how the miller fitted 14 children into
his little home, and how his wife coped with all
the washing in her small laundry. The children
were glad they don't have to sleep "top-to-toe"
with their brothers and sisters!
Then we climbed the steep stairs to the top of
the mill to see the huge millstones and big
wooden cogs that turned the machinery. Finally,
we saw the various workshops filled with old
tools used by local craftsmen in Victorian

times. As luck would have it, one of our guides at the
mill had been an evacuee during the war, so he was
able to describe his experiences to us. We returned to
school excited by all we had discovered.
Class 1 & 2 trip to No Name Shop
Class 1 and 2 had a wonderful French outing to
Sandwich this week! We visited the No Name Shop
where the children used their language skills to ask for
‘un croissant, un pain au chocolat, or un chocolat
chaud, s’il vous plait.’ Everyone enjoyed this little piece
of France on our doorstep. Thanks to Mrs Balfour for
organising it.

INTER-HOUSE SPORTS DAY
Saturday 8th June 2013
What a day, what an event and what a fantastic occasion!!
Although the weather was somewhat colder than normal, (especially for the middle of summer) the conditions
were pleasant for running in. The windy conditions may have affected some of the track events – but this did not
spoil any of the atmosphere!!
Each child gave of their best in pursuit of individual victory and to score maximum points for their beloved house!!
This was certainly a wonderful afternoon of great rivalry and competition and all of the competitors must be
congratulated on the fine sportsmanship they displayed throughout the event. Such humility can often be
forgotten in the ‘heat of battle’, but I was really impressed with how each and every competitor enjoyed in each
other’s success!! Well done to you all – you were a great credit to yourselves!

1st XI Cricket vs Duke of York’s (Away)
Middle of the summer, and we have a cricket match abandoned by mist, fog and rain!!!! It is just not cricket!!!
We decided to start the match and keep an eye on the weather, rather than on the ball!! The boys won the toss
and elected to bat first as the track was still OK to bat on. However, the opposition found it really difficult to field
and bowl with a very slippery and wet ball.
With the score on 37 for 2, the mist descended even further and unfortunately the decision was taken to abandon
the match completely. Well done to Alex Torriglia who opened the batting for the first time and ended up on 9 not
out.
Colts Cricket 6-a-side Tournament at Kent College Junior School
This is a great tournament. There were 8 schools divided into 2 groups of 4. Each side play each other and the top
two from each group go through to the semi-finals and then the final. The rules are as for normal cricket but each
side only gets 5 overs to make as many runs as they can with a wide or no ball counting as 5 runs. Each bowler can
only bowl one over. It’s like 20-20 but with more pressure.
Our first match was against St Lawrence. They batted first and we started brilliantly. They only managed 2 off their
first over and then we ran out their Number 1 in the second. But their Number 2 stepped up to the plate and he
started to punish our bowlers. We gave away 45 off 3 overs and they finished on 56. Our innings couldn’t have
started worse with Jean-Baptiste being bowled in the first over. Roshan, Harvey and Charlie did their best but we
crawled to only 23.
The second game against Wellesley was a different affair. 3 overs into their innings, they were on 15 for 2 wickets,
Charlie having taken two wickets in 2 balls. But we bowled too many no balls in their last two overs and they
reached 37. Roshan batted aggressively but he didn’t get the support he needed and we ended 5 runs short.
Our final game was against St Edmunds and with no chance of progressing to the next round, Northbourne played
their substitutes. Roshan, Charlie and Joly bowled beautifully and only gave away 17 runs off 3 overs but again we
couldn’t keep this up and St Edmunds scvored 40 off the last two overs. Our batsmen did their best and scored 40
runs off their 5 overs but this was 17 short.
Not a hugely successful outing but a lot of fun and each player made a contribution.

U13 Rounders v Duke of York’s (Home)
The last match of the season for the Under 13 team could not have been closer. We went in to bat first and Natalia
started off with a superb hit into the deep field not expecting to be caught out by a brilliant piece of fielding from >

the opposition. A number of our other batters went the same way and by the end of the first innings we had only
managed a total of 4 rounders.
Fortunately, Duke of York’s were not a particularly strong batting team and we fielded efficiently restricting them
to a 1st innings total of 4 ½.
In the second innings it became a battle of the fielders. After 8 of our players getting out Honor ended up having
to score a full rounder in order to keep the innings going, which she did in great style. Our final total was 7 ½
rounders and we had to stop the opposition reaching 3 if we were going to win. Our focus and concentration was
superb and we so nearly pulled it off! Just one minor slip up in the fielding allowed Duke of York’s to score an extra
half rounder and meant that the final result was NPS 7 ½ - Duke of York’s 8.

Girls U9 Rounders v St Faith’s
The excitement and enthusiasm of the girls certainly showed in the match today. We had worked hard on our
batting and fielding technique during practice, which helped the girls to achieve a victory of 17.5 – 13 against an
evenly matched St. Faith’s team.
During the first innings, the team started off a bit slow and made some fielding errors that allowed St. Faith’s to
score when they shouldn’t have done so. Fortunately the girls batted much better than in previous matches and
managed to be 12.5 – 8.5 up, to go into the next innings. We maintained our lead by fielding much better, with
Ashika taking some fantastic catches at 4th post and Sofia being as solid as she has been throughout the season at
backstop. Well done on a huge team effort.
