Citrus Belt Inducts Five Into Hall of Fame

The Citrus Belt hosted it’s
annual Hall of Fame dinner
and induction ceremony last
Saturday. The affair was ably
organized by Phosie Lotze and
Nita Schmidt and held at the
Elk’s Lodge. A crowd of over
100 friends, family, association officers, Hall of Famers
and inductees were present as
President Mike Raddeman addressed the gathering and then
turned the floor over to Curt
Snyder, the nights Master of
Ceremonies.
Snyder, a long time Hall of
Fame member, was eloquent
as usual and presided over
the introduction of all present
Hall of Famers and the class
of 2015: Butch Hesketh,
Lonnie Ritchey, Vance Sisk,
John Valentine Jr., and Sharon Vollan.

and pro shop operator. Over
the years he mentored dozens
of young bowlers and was
always available when they
needed him. Butch’s most

Lonnie Ritchey is one of
the best bowlers ever to compete in Moreno Valley. Lonnie has a composite average of
218 for the past 23 years. During that period Lonnie rolled
22 perfect games and five 800s
with a high of 827.
Vance Sisk has a remarkable 93 ABC/USBC achievement awards including 29 perfect games, 22 eight hundreds
with a high of 868. Vance has
numerous tournament wins including a PBA Regional title, a
California State team title, and
Citrus Belt Masters and All
Events titles. In 2005 Vance
led the association in average
with a 242 book.

A STRANGE PHENOMENON
Can injury make you a better bowler? While the premise sounds far-fetched, there is evidence
indicating some truth to this. My theory has always been that soreness of any kind slows a bowler’s
approach and breaks the habit of throwing too hard. Pain makes bowlers more thoughtful. Thoughtful bowlers are more deliberate and accurate.
Unfortunately, gimpy knees and sore backs are temporary complaints which result in short-term
fixes to certain technical issues. When the ache is gone, reliance on skill usually goes with it. I’ve
seen this play out many times and that’s a shame. But what if the problem is more than a mere crick
in the neck?
The year is 1999. Jeff McKinley, self-employed plumber, avid bowler and all around nice guy,
falls through a ceiling and lands in a toilet. That would be hilarious on a TV sitcom, but not so much
in real life. Averaging 205 at the time, he is forced to stop bowling. He’d suffered a critical back
injury which required surgery to repair.
Guys like Jeff aren’t prone to knitting doilies, so of course he worked hard to get back to the
sport he loved - probably against the advice of his doctors. After considerable rehab, he returned to
bowling and averaged 215. What do doctors know?
Life was good.....until 2004. This time he fell off a roof! Landing on his right side, his shoulder
was severely dislocated and ankle......S-H-A-T-T-E-R-E-D! Lying on the ground in agony, his only
thought was, “At least it’s not my sliding foot!”
Plates and screws were installed to hold his ankle together. His shoulder was put back in place
and immobilized for two weeks. No problem, right? WRONG!!! Inactivity allowed adhesions to
form in the shoulder. This required a medical procedure called, “Manipulation.”
While that sounds benign........it’s not! Manipulation involves lying on a table while a physician
pulls and twists your arm so severely that the scar tissue adhesions are literally torn apart. Sedation
would be nice; physical rehab, required. You really have to love bowling to go through that, and Jeff
does. After successful therapy, his average climbed to 225.
Today, Jeff averages 230. Did another catastrophe contribute to that? No. This time, his soaring
average may be aided by the universal scourge called “The Aging Process.” It brings all sorts of
long term aches and pains. Can that make anyone a better bowler? Perhaps.
Here’s my thought about that: LIFE’S JUST NOT FAIR!!! For years I studied techniques, principles and the truths about bowling in an attempt to become a respectable bowler. It seems all I
really needed to do was step in front of a moving bus!
All joking aside, it’s Jeff’s work ethic and passion for this game that are responsible for his success. Because of that, there’s no doubt in my mind that he will someday be a local bowling legend*
(if he isn’t already). Whether he’ll be remembered as “Gentleman Jeff,” “The Comeback Kid,” or
some other nickname only time will tell.
I can only say that either of the above would be appropriate. I’ve never seen him angry. He’s a
mild-mannered but intense competitor. The only time the smile leaves his face is when he’s up on
the approach.
There is nothing fancy about either his delivery or the action of his ball, but then, there never
was. His technique is solid, consistent and produces a straight down-and-in shot with modest hook
at the tail end. It always has. Typically, when his ball enters the pit, ten pins accompany it. For him,
there is nothing unusual about that either.
In fact, watching him today is the same as twenty years ago. His technique shows no indication
of what he’s been through. I just hope Mr. McKinley never takes up skydiving. Accident prone as
he is, if his chute ever failed to open, I’m afraid he’d end up averaging 259, and that just wouldn’t
be fair to the rest of us!
*In 2009, Jeff was nominated for induction into Erie’s local bowlers Hall-of-Fame. He gained
admission in the first round of voting. Considering the number of PBA champions enshrined there,
that’s impressive!

Experience in Sacramento Open

CITRUS HEIGHTS – Kimberly Power of San Leandro, Calif., didn’t win the Sacramento Open
earlier this month. Nor did she reach the stepladder finals.
But everything else went pretty much according to plan for the 47-year-old right-hander. Power
posted the highest qualifying score of all the California bowlers and was one of only two from the
Golden State to advance to match play at Steve Cook’s Fireside Lanes.
She finished the qualifying session in eighth place overall among the 80 total entrants with the
top 16 bowlers advancing. Twenty-seven California bowlers – many of them Hall of Famers –
took part in the competition and only Power and Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills (11th in qualifying)
advanced to match play.
Power wound up finishing 15th, winning $1,550.
“I enjoyed the tournament immensely,” Power said.
It was somewhat of a surprise that Power finished atop the list of more well-known and starstudded California bowlers, but Power was confident entering the tournament.
“I thought I was likely to cash going in,” said Power, who has rolled four sanctioned perfect
games and a 794 series. “I had cashed in [the 2014] Queens, so I knew I could do that. Making
match play was a pleasant surprise, especially being all the way up in eighth.”
Power advanced to match play with a 213.58 average for the 12 qualifying games. Kristina
Wendell of Kingston, N.Y., who was part of Power’s five-player qualifying group, was the top
qualifier with a 229.22 average.
“I absolutely loved the group I got to bowl qualifying with – Kristina Wendell, Danielle Daugherty, Lindsay Boomershine, Allie Ijams,” Power posted on her Facebook page. “Would love to be
paired with all of you again. Maybe at Queens next year.
“I am also fairly certain we had the tallest group in the tournament. It was almost like they
decided to put all the tall ones together.”
The Sacramento Open was the first regular-season event
on the PWBA Tour in more than a dozen years. There is a full
schedule of PWBA events to come for the rest of the year, but
Power said she was going to sit them all out.
“This is my one and only [PWBA event] for the year,” Power
said. “No time to make any of the other stops. Didn’t bowl
Queens [in May] and can’t make time for the [U.S.] Open [in
late August].”
Power, by no means, plans to curtail her bowling activities.
“I have put a lot of work into my game in the last 5-10 years.
Me five years ago would never have cashed in the [Sacramento

Open],” said Power, who has not joined the PWBA so is officially an amateur.

“I have bowled a lot of stuff in recent years. Gradually getting better by practice, coaching and experience. I still have a
long way to go, though. Doubt I can ever really catch up to the
skill of the top pros.
“I am good enough to make a good showing and possibly pop
off a surprise finish but still not good enough to win multiple
titles yet.”
Her biggest highlight? Power cited being part of the winning
United States Bowling Congress 2012 national championship
women’s team in Reno.
But she said advancing to match play in the Sacramento Open
ranked high on her highlight list. Having her parents watch her
performance made it special, she said.
“I think I may have enjoyed the [Sacramento Open] the most

USBC Partners with Habitat for Humanity - El Paso
EL PASO, Texas - As the 2015 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships winds
down at the El Paso Convention Center, Habitat for Humanity - El Paso already has plans for how
it will be able to use some of the materials from the venue after the tournament ends.
The construction of the one-of-a-kind 62-lane bowling arena took 64 days, and the facility was
put together with thoughts on maximizing salvageable materials at the end of the event. It will take
about 10 days and help from dozens of local volunteers for the two organizations to tear down the
venue, which has enough lumber and materials to construct approximately four three-bedroom
homes. Habitat for Humanity - El Paso estimates it will be able to build six residences locally on a
parcel of land designated as The Pope Francis Village.
“We received an anonymous donation requesting that we build a home in honor of Pope Francis.
The Catholic Diocese of El Paso has endorsed the project, and we presently are working with the
city to acquire the land, hopefully large enough to build three duplexes,” said Habitat for Humanity - El Paso Development Manager Patsy Terrazas-Hermosillo. “Some of the materials will go to
a local VFW post that needs to do some remodeling to its hall, and they’ve agreed to help with the
deconstruction in return for the materials.”
HFHEP will provide buckets of necessary tools to help the process, including hammers, drills
and extension cords. “It means a lot to us to know that some of our materials will benefit the local community, and the legacy of the tournament will live on long after we are gone,” said Greg
Moore, USBC Senior Director of Tournament Programming. “El Paso has been a gracious host to
our event, staff and bowlers, and we are very grateful for more than seven months of hospitality.
This is a great way to end the tournament.”
Along with providing much-needed materials for local projects, the partnership also will serve
as a way to bring the El Paso community together. “In honoring the Pope, we are hoping to bring
people of all religions and cultures together to partake in this very heart-warming project,” Terrazas-Hermosillo said. “Any materials not used will be sold at our monthly warehouse sale to raise
funds to open our ReStore in the near future.”
The Open Championships will conclude on July 11 after 127 consecutive days of competition.
During that time, nearly 40,000 bowlers, plus their families, friends and guests will have made their
way to The Sun City.
The 2015 tournament was the 112th edition of the world’s largest annual participatory sporting event but marked its first visit to El Paso. In 2010, El Paso played host to the USBC Women’s
Championships, which attracted more than 5,800 five-player teams to the first convention-center
build in Women’s Championships history. “We, at Habitat for Humanity, want to sincerely thank
Greg Moore and all the USBC staff for their consideration, time and support in making us a partner
in the conclusion and deconstruction of the 2015 USBC Open Championship venue,” TerrazasHermosillo said. “The championship was extremely beneficial to the city of El Paso, and now
the entire community stands to benefit from their continued support of Habitat for Humanity. We
will be sure to share with the residents that will benefit from the construction of The Pope Francis
Village that their home was partially constructed from the material given from the thoughtful and
caring people of USBC.” Starting at the 2002 USBC Open Championships in Billings, Montana,
USBC and the local Habitat for Humanity chapters have worked together whenever possible to

Tyler Baker to take his best shot at winning new car

WINNETKA — Tyler Baker of Calabasas believes he’s in the driver’s seat to win a new Honda
Civic.
Baker, a 27-year-old resident, is one of five bowlers to reach the finals in a Los Angeles-area
“Win A Honda” tournament.
The fivesome will be competing against one another for the chance to drive off in a shiny red
2015 Honda Civic. The finals will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Winnetka Bowl.
The finals will use a “stepladder” format in which the lowest-ranked bowler faces off against the
second-lowest bowler. The winner of that match meets the third-lowest ranked bowler and so on.
So the No. 1-seeded player needs to win only one match to win the title, whereas the Nos. 4 and 5
players (who will meet in the opening game) need to win four matches.
Baker is seeded fourth (based on his performance in the tournament’s semifinals), so he has to
win four games to win the car. Even though it appears he may be at a distinct disadvantage to, say,
No. 1-seeded Kelly Manuel, Baker doesn’t see it that way.
“I’d rather climb the ladder,” said Baker, whose home bowling center is Corbin Bowl in Tarzana.
“I’d rather bowl four games than one game so I know [the oil conditions of] the lanes.”
Baker had the highest scratch score of all five finalists with his three-game series during the Tyler Baker beams after qualisemifinals June 28 at Winnetka Bowl. But because it’s a handicap tournament – in which all players fying for the “Win A Honda”
receive extra pins based on their averages and Baker carried a higher average than the others – Baker tournament finals at Winnetka

Baker put on a show in his first game of the semifinals, racking up strikes on his first 10 shots en
route to a sizzling 289. “That got me rolling,” he said.
He needed 12 strikes for the magical perfect game score of 300. But the right-hander’s 11th shot left the 10 pin. “It wasn’t my best
shot, but it should have carried [for a strike],”
he said.
Baker has rolled three perfect games in his
career, two in 2008 and one last year. His perfect games have come at three bowling centers
– AMF Woodlake Lanes in Woodland Hills,
Winnetka Bowl and Corbin Bowl.
“I’ve been bowling since I’ve been 11 or 12
so I’ve been doing it a long time,” Baker said.
“And I’ve been coached by [elite coach] Mark
Baker, who is an amazing guy.”
Baker, who averages 201, finished his semifinal series with scores of 186 and 221.
Manuel, 25, of Azusa, topped all players in
the semifinals with scores of 228, 200 and 235.
She averages 171 and with handicap, her total
rose to 849. Mark Alvarino, 32, placed third;
Patrick Manalo, 58, took fourth; and Shoji
Takeshima, 48, was fifth.
Asked what he would do if he won the car,
Baker said, “I’ll probably keep it. I already
have a Honda Civic – a 2007. So I’d sell my
old car. You can’t go wrong with a Civic. It’s

WINNETKA – How did you like the change in weather
over the weekend? I think the Rain Dance did the trick. It
poured buckets and buckets of rain and even loud sounds
of thunder and lightning in my area. It was great to hear the
sound of rain falling into the gutters and filling the planters
with all that rain, I don’t think the plants knew what to do.
The rain was coming down so fast even my brown lawn
was forming pools of its own. Now everything will look
clean and green.

ANAHEIM — The fall meeting for this most prestigious
league is scheduled for JULY 31 AT LINBROOK BOWL at
approx. 11:45AM, after conclusion of the Rocky Marsh Trios
league session.
This popular league fills quickly so if you are planning to
bowl, please plan to attend or have a rep of your team to secure
your spot. We only have room for 20 teams!
All rules will be read so NOW is the time to voice opinions
-- yea or nay for existing rules or make a motion to introduce new
ones...YOUR league!!
All returning 590 Classic league bowlers will use their league
ending averages, all others will use their 2015/16 books.

BURBANK — Saturday, August 15th, Pickwick will be
the site of the Annual Secretaries Appreciation Day. I urge
all league secretaries to attend and if you can’t be there,
send your league President or VP. In fact, send anyone
you would like to represent your league bowlers and their
questions. Last word was David Prange, USBC Western
Region Director, will join us for the pow wow. Surely you
have questions for him, I know I do!
Another important date for Pickwick is Sunday, August
16th. Pickwick will be hosting the Adult/Youth No Tap Doubles Tournament. If you have a sanctioned youth bowler
that may not have an adult partner, fear not. There are
many at the ready to help you out. For more information
there are flyers at the desk.
Now there will be no excuses for you to miss these
great events! I have given you lots of time to clear your
calendars and start formulating the questions you have
regarding USBC, sanctioning and your local association,
