Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes during the
lambing season? Fear not, here is the Welland Valley Feeds basic
guide to lambing!
Feeding
From six weeks before lambing onwards the
ewes will need a special diet of concentrates
and roughage. Failure to maintain good condition
in the ewes can result in pregnancy toxaemia,
commonly known as twin-lamb disease. If
the ewes are underfed at this time of year too
much of the energy in the diet will be diverted
to the growing lambs leaving insufficient for the
ewes. The flock would also benefit from having a
mineral bucket available to them.
Preparation for lambing
About two weeks before lambing the ewes
should be vaccinated against clostridial diseases
and pasteurella (vaccine available at WVF). This
enables them to pass on their immunity to their
lambs.
Whether lambing indoors or out, individual pens
should be available to isolate the ewe and lambs
away from the main flock. It is essential that
straw bedding be replaced regularly and fresh,
clean water be provided.

Elastrator and rubber rings

Syringe, disposable needles and antibiotic
Signs of lambing
After Lambing
An early indication is that the ewe will choose
a place away from the rest of the flock. She
will appear uneasy and pre-occupied. She will
repeatedly lie down and eventually start to strain.
If the presentation is normal a water bag will
appear first. This may or may not burst at this
stage but next the front feet and nose of the lamb
will emerge. The ewe will continue to strain until
the lamb is born. The ewe will then lick the lamb
clean to stimulate it.
The ewe and lambs should be moved as soon
as possible to an individual pen. If the lambs
are carried slowly in full view of its mother then
she will usually follow. Draw at the udder to
ensure that the ewe has enough colostrum. This
contains the essential antibodies that give the
lambs resistance to disease. The lambs’ navels
should be sprayed with iodine solution as soon
as possible to prevent invasion by organisms
that cause joint ill. After 24 hours, castration / tail
ringing can take place using rubber rings and an
elastrator. It is a good idea to take the opportunity
to trim and treat the ewes’ feet and give her a
dose of wormer.
If the ewe is having difficulty in lambing naturally,
assistance may be needed. Experience comes
with practice and the inexperienced shepherd
should not be afraid to enlist the help of someone
more knowledgeable or to call a vet. When a
ewe has been assisted she should be given
an antibiotic injection as a precaution against
infection

Hand Rearing
If a ewe has insufficient milk or has triplets, you
may need to supplement feeding initially with
colostrum and then with milk powder substitute.
Never feed cow’s milk as it unsuitable and always
keep the bottles and teats scrupulously clean. For
the first four or five days you will need to feed the
lambs every four hours, and thereafter every six
to eight hours until weaning. After a few days you
will be able to introduce lamb creep pellets into
their diet.
