Mass at 9:30am November 22, 2015 Page 2 PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Liguori Publications and wanted to share it with you. JESUS IS THE ONE At this time next year, our country will have elected a new president. Though I don’t know what the results will be, I’m certain that whether your candidate wins or loses, many will be relieved that the endless speeches, appearances, and phone calls are over. It’s exhausting to hear people endlessly promote themselves, whether it’s for school board president or leader of the free world. We all grow weary of empty promises, lists of accomplishments, and often-false humility. In contrast, today’s readings invite us to reflect on Jesus’ kingship. Jesus – the one in whom many candidates claim deep faith – is crowned our ultimate leader, our king, in heaven. Yet His leadership is quite different from that of our politicians. The Book of Revelation claims He is “the one who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” He’s not in it only for four or eight years, after which He’ll retire to a comfortable home with book deals and speaking engagements. Jesus’ kingship is everlasting – He’ll never falter, fail or flip-flop. Revelation also claims “every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him.” Unlike our candidates, whose rhetoric divides the country, Jesus brings people together. And He certainly didn’t know our rules for self-promotion. Instead of claiming the title of king, He continually points to His Father and their intimate connection. We’re probably used to thinking of Jesus as our Savior, our friend, our brother. But it’s good to spend time this week recognizing Him as king. He’s a profoundly different kind of leader than any president, congressman, prime minister, or member of parliament. And for this, during the month when we celebrate Thanksgiving, we can be deeply grateful. Thank You! I hope you like our Thanksgiving decoration! Being that it is Thanksgiving, we give thanks to our dear friends in the Environment committee who donated their time, talent, and energy to give us that wonderful “Thanksgiving feeling.” Thank you so much, too, for all your food donations for our families in our community who need our kindness and generosity. You have truly lived out the spirit of ThanksGIVING. There would be no Thanksgiving if the Native Americans and the Pilgrims did not learn how to give to each other. On behalf of Fr. Pako, our beloved deacons - Dn. Charles and Dn. Carlos, “Thank you very much and have a very wonderful Thanksgiving!” OLPH would never be what it is today without YOU. God bless you and your families. Blessings, Fr. Joseph Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING The First Thanksgiving Late in the year 1620, the Mayflower, a small ship for ocean crossings, left England with over 100 passengers onboard. The settlers were not prepared for the harsh New England winter and by the time spring came, they were down to about half of their people. With the help of the Native Americans the settlers prospered and later that year, in November of 1621 the settlers were ready to celebrate the successful harvest of their first crop of corn. The settlers invited many of their Indian allies to the party. The celebration of that first harvest lasted 3 days. In 1817, New York was the first state to adopt Thanksgiving as an official holiday. By the time the Civil War erupted in the 1860's, every state had also made Thanksgiving a state holiday. In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt declared that the Thanksgiving would be on the third Thursday in November. Congress approved that declaration two years later in 1941. It is no secret that most Thanksgiving Day traditions revolve around food. Indeed, the turkey is the symbol of Thanksgiving. What is telling is what was missing from that first Thanksgiving - vegetables. Neither the pilgrims nor the Indians had any way to keep vegetables fresh that far into fall. Another major difference is the lack of desserts at the first Thanksgiving. Today, dessert is a major part of the Thanksgiving meal. However by autumn of 1621, the pilgrims were running low on sugar and probably didn't make any pumpkin pie or peach cobbler. From the Servant’s Heart Page 3 “Let There Be Peace On Earth” Let us continue to offer prayers for all the people who have been killed, injured, and adversely affected by the terror attacks in Paris. Also pray for the people around the world who sow violence. That God will touch their hearts and enlighten them and to instead spread peace, unity, and forgiveness. “Small Things are the Big Things” You may have grown tired of being reminded every Sunday during the announcement to arrange the books and song sheets. But helping us in this way really goes a long way in keeping our church clean and making it a nice place where we can pray. Thank you so very much for making it happen. Thanksgiving with God and with our Jewish Neighbors It’s wonderful when we celebrate Thanksgiving with our family sharing the turkey for dinner. But I pray we also make sure to make God a part of this great American tradition. Before anything else, let us, as one community, celebrate our “God of Blessings” in our Thanksgiving Mass, Thursday at 9:30 am. I also encourage you to join us at our Interfaith Thanksgiving celebration tomorrow, Monday, November 23, at 7 pm, at the Temple Ner Tamid. The spirit of Thanksgiving is also about “reaching out” just as the Native Americans reached out to the Pilgrims. Let us also reach out to our brethren from other faith traditions, especially the Jewish community, who were so gracious to host the event. Please bring whatever you wish to donate to our Downey food banks so we can help feed the hungry. Novena Masses in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe We are so blessed to have Fr. Pako celebrate the Novena Masses with us in honor of “La Virgen de las Americas.” This gives us an opportunity to listen to more homilies about “La Virgen de Guadalupe” and the history of this feast very dear to the heart of the Spanish-speaking world. More details will be forthcoming. “ LPH with a HEART” http://historyofthanksgiving.net/ Fr. Missionary Intention: That pastors of the Church, with profound love for their flocks, may accompany them and enliven their hope.
