She began to pray for mercy, but her prayers were powerless. Suddenly she saw the Holy Trinity and felt the power of Jesus’ grace within her. At the same time she found herself pleading with God for mercy with words she heard interiorly: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us. (Diary, 475) As she continued saying this inspired prayer, the angel became helpless and could not carry out the deserved punishment (see 474). The next day, as she was entering the chapel, she again heard this interior voice, instructing her how to recite the prayer that our Lord later called "the Chaplet." This time, after "have mercy on us" were added the words "and on the whole world" (476). From then on, she recited this form of prayer almost constantly, offering it especially for the dying. In subsequent revelations, the Lord made it clear that the Chaplet was not just for her, but for the whole world. He also attached extraordinary promises to its recitation. Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you (1541). Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death (687). When they say this Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior (1541). Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this Chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy (687). I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy (687). Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will. (1731) Prayed on ordinary rosary beads, The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy is an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist, so it is especially appropriate to use it after having received Holy Communion at Holy Mass. It may be said at any time, but our Lord specifically told St. Faustina to recite it during the nine days before the Feast of Mercy (the first Sunday after Easter). He then added: "By this Novena, [of Chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to souls." (796) It is likewise appropriate to pray the Chaplet during the "Hour of Great Mercy" — three o'clock each afternoon (recalling the time of Christ’s death on the cross). In His revelations to St. Faustina, Our Lord asked for a special remembrance of His Passion at that hour. 2 JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY The History of the Chaplet of The Divine Mercy How to Recite the Divine Mercy Chaplet The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades. The Chaplet is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer Optional Opening Prayers: You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. (Repeat 3 times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You! Our Father, Hail Mary and the Apostle's Creed For each of the five decades (On each “Our Father” bead of the rosary, pray) Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. (On each of the 10 “Hail Mary” beads, pray) For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Concluding prayer (Repeat 3 times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Optional Closing Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Please contact Father Tom at: [email protected] to indicate your interest. ASCENSION’S CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME COMMITTEE In response to Pope Francis’ call and the responsibility we have to care for our environment we are forming a parish initiative focusing on Caring for Our Common Home. The purpose of this group will be to advise and recommend practices related to our parish being good stewards of God’s gifts of the earth and its resources including our buildings, our grounds, our educational programs, our outreach and service to our community. Goals are to help all of us to make the link between our Christian faith and concerns for the environment, to promote actions that will reduce the parish ecological footprint and to encourage parishioners to implement practices that positively impact the environment. If you are interested in helping with this initiative, please contact Fr. Tom at: [email protected] or 913-681-3348 x 137. NATHAN HAVERLAND Hopefully you enjoyed your 40 day journey with the book Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly. Now what? Step one: Pass the book along to someone else. Don’t bring it back to the Church. Don’t drop off at your local library. Don’t bring it to the Ascension Garage Sale. Pass it on to someone who really might benefit from it. This is a simple and effective way to evangelize to the world. Step two: The next step is for YOU to actually encounter Jesus. Jesus is truly present and living all around us, but how do we encounter Him? How do we meet Him and spend time with Him? To some the following may sound a little cliché, but maybe it is also time to rediscover Jesus truly living and present among us! Eucharist. At the Last Supper, Jesus made it pretty clear that He would not abandon the Church. Instead of abandoning the Church, Jesus gave Himself to the Church in a completely new and unfathomable way. Jesus could not have been clearer that the blessed bread and wine truly do become His body (Mt 26:26) and blood (Mt 26:28), and so one of the easiest ways to truly encounter Jesus is by frequently attending Mass and spending time in adoration. I have never met a person whose life was not radically changed by spending more time with the Eucharist. Confession. Immediately after the Resurrection, Jesus eagerly gave to the Apostles the power to forgive sins saying, “the sins you forgive are forgiven” (Jn 20:23). He did not have to do this, but He wanted to do this! He wanted all of humanity to encounter His mercy. The power to forgive sins has been handed on from the Apostles to the priests of our present age in the sacrament of Reconciliation. If we want to encounter Jesus, why not encounter that gift He was so eager to give on Easter and to do so frequently? Scripture. The Scriptures are a priceless treasure of the Church. They are a collection of writings that span many centuries but reach a culmination in the life and teachings of Jesus. They are the sacred vessel in which we learn of God’s love for humanity. An excellent way to encounter Jesus is to prayerfully read through the things He did and said. If you’ve never read an entire Gospel before, why not try? The Forgotten. If you want to know someone, it is wise to spend time with the things they love. If we search through the Scriptures, we see Jesus had a tremendous love for the sick and outcasts of society, often to the dismay of others. Jesus even said that if we serve them, we serve Him (Mt 25:45). There is no doubt that Jesus is truly present in the suffering and so if you want to encounter Jesus, spend some time with the forgotten. His Mother. As Jesus died on the Cross, we only know of a few things that were going through His mind. We know He was thinking of our Father in heaven (Lk 233:34), of the Psalms (Mt 27:46), of the criminals crucified with Him (Lk 23:43), and especially of His mother (Jn 19:26). God showed a tremendous amount of trust in Mary in asking her, of all the women of the world, to be the mother of His Son. If you want to encounter Jesus, turn to His mother! These are of course not the only ways to encounter Jesus, but if you truly want to grow in your relationship with Jesus, give these a try. No, I challenge you to try them! I do not doubt that if you do any of the above with regularity that you will rediscover Jesus truly living among us. 10 Church of the Ascension Divine Mercy Sunday April 3, 2016 WEEKLY PRAYER NOTE: Please be sure to let us know when your loved one is better. While this was a common greeting, Jesus was using it to remind them of his saying, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid" (John 14:27). The disciples were hiding in fear, so they needed reassurance. Jesus gives them that reassurance in three ways: his resurrection, forgiveness of sins, and a blessing for future disciples. Now that he is raised from the dead, they can take heart that no one can truly hurt them--even death has been overcome. The disciples had seen Jesus crucified and were afraid any of his followers would be treated the same way. So when Jesus appeared to them, he showed them his wounds and let them touch him. He wanted to show that he was not a ghost (a spirit or vision of someone who is still dead). He has risen from death and it has no more power over him. They can now take courage because they will share in the Resurrection themselves. Breathing on them, he bestows the Holy Spirit, source of our courage. That leads to the second reassurance, forgiveness of sins. Jesus died to take away our sins; now he shares that with his disciples when he tells them that they can forgive sins also (John 20:23). Anyone troubled by guilt can be forgiven. The disciples themselves probably felt that need, since they had deserted Jesus and one even denied knowing him. As Jesus was sent by his Father, he now sends his apostles with the mission to free others from sin. We too can forgive others (and ourselves) knowing that God has forgiven them and us. Finally, the story of Thomas and his doubts about Jesus' resurrection gives us some hope. Jesus blesses those who "have not seen and have believed" (John 20:29). That includes everyone down to the present generation who has believed on the word of others--from the apostles in the scriptures to holy people in our own time who have experienced the Lord in their lives. We often think the apostles were "more" blessed for having seen and heard Jesus. But Jesus reverses that expectation; we are blessed, even two thousand years after the Resurrection.
