ADVERTORIAL Out On A Ledge Theodore Jennings, award-winning designer, on building your own space in Tokyo F or those who can’t get away on holidays or who can’t stand being back—there is another option. Convert a portion of your house into your own holiday home. Vacation Veranda is the brainc h i l d o f e x p a t e nt r e p r e n e u r Theodore Jennings. His idea was to stimulate the nascent green revolution in Tokyo and help people make the most of the limited space around them. Metropolis spoke with Jennings about the inception and fruition of his idea... and how he’s carved out a niche for himself in Tokyo… while helping people find their own niche at home. What was the initial idea? How did it begin? Four years ago, I looked out from my private “Copacabana” balcony where I’d often entertained friends, and saw a sea of unused balconies in Tokyo. It made me sad to see that people couldn’t imagine how to transform their balconies and add a bit of extra happiness to their lives. ATSUSHI ISHIDA - NAKASA & PARTNERS INC. initial one-year savings ran out before business really picked up. I took another nine-to-five desk job for a period to keep my six staff and company alive, but it was what I needed to do to ensure Vacation Veranda survived. What were some milestone moments? In 2010, we were featured in The New York Times, and that helped to give us some real credibility. In 2011, the earthquake and subsequent nuclear disaster actually helped business with the new push for energy savings. Our “green” designs reduced energy costs due to their cooler surfaces. They significantly cut the heat island effect on balconies and rooftops through decking, grass, trees and water features that we incorporate into our designs. The same year, we won the silver medal at the Hibiya Garden Lifestyle Design Show, a national competition with blind judging from many large garden and design companies. In 2012 we landed our first large commercial project to transform nearly 250m2 of rooftop for an embassy in Tokyo, which helped showcase our skills for large private enterprises as well. company where I worked, but I realized that I loved Vacation Veranda too much and I needed to be fully immersed in doing what I am passionate about. Now I am 100 percent back into my business, with a wonderful supportive staff and understanding clients and my goals are to ensure that customer service is better than it ever was. advantage of being raised in a different culture is being able to see what the locals haven’t been able to see. Capitalize on that! Take Terrie Lloyd’s “Starting a Business in Japan” two-day course—money well spent—and associate yourself with other entrepreneurs in Tokyo to get advice and build a support network. Were there any times you thought of giving up? What are your plans for the future— where will you go from here? I’ve never wanted to give up—never. Sometimes I get frustrated with my various challenges, but I’m a man of faith and I’m doing something that I love. So it’s more a matter of me asking God, “How do you want me to navigate these challenges?” God has never let me down, so I’ll continue to believe that things will work out in the end. I want Vacation Veranda to become the Louis Vuitton of outdoor living! In order to do this, I will have to constantly offer the best designs and highest quality of service. I want to make not only a huge impact in Tokyo, but also in other major cities where rooftop greening is needed. When did you realize you were glad you didn’t? The best feeling is seeing how my clients’ lives have changed from the designed spaces that I create for them. This is what constantly reaffirms for me that I’ve made the right choice. What were the challenges you faced? Challenges go hand-in-hand with entrepreneurship. My earliest was forcing myself to devise a cohesive marketing strategy to explain the ideas in my head to customers. Mid-term challenges revolved around how to survive after my And some heartbreak moments? The hardest thing I’ve had to do since I started the company was to take another job for eight months to pump cash back into my business. Taking that job humbled me, and I tried to make an impact at the What’s your advice for other would-be foreign entrepreneurs? It can be done. Japan needs more foreign entrepreneurs because we bring a different perspective into the Japanese economy that can help generate wealth. One How does the veranda concept chime in with your feelings about Tokyo? Tokyo is still the most populated city in the world with perhaps smaller spaces compared other large cities, so I’d like to help people create a bit of happiness right on their balconies. It not only expands their space by giving them an outdoor room, but it also brings a bit of imagination into one’s home. Imagination is how all things beautiful and innovative come into existence. Having an imaginative escape space right in your apartment, I believe, would do something special for Tokyoites. Upfront thrills in the hills living the dream Once again Tokyo’s corporate titans will have the chance to take their battles from the boardroom to the boxing ring. The upcoming screening of the classic film at Minato Mirai Hall will be accompanied by the sounds of American organist Peter Krasinski. “The art of silent movie accompaniment on the pipe organ is a rare but much cherished tradition in the US,” Krasinski explains, “and I am pleased to experience these most unique versions of the art in Japan.” The performance is just one example of countless unique cinema experiences available around Kanto, and confirms something that local fans have long known—Tokyo is one great place to catch a movie. American organist Peter Krasinski will perform organ accompaniment for the 1927 film Metropolis. In addition to this international diversity, you also have historical diversity with the National Film Center in Kyobashi and the many meizaga.” The Japanese term literally translates as “masterpiece theater” and the closest international equivalents are the revival houses that are rapidly disappearing across the US. When Naito lived in New York 25 years ago, they were practically uncountable. On his last visit, only the Film Forum remained. On the west coast, Quentin Tarantino purchased the New Beverly rather than allow one of the last remaining revival houses in Hollywood to close. Although they are threatened by the specter of the multiplex, revival houses in Tokyo are still plentiful—something Naito says we should all be proud of. Plus, they offer a dazzling array of choices. Whatever you're into, there’s a movie house for you in and around Tokyo D © PARAMOUNT PICTURES. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED espite the diversity of film venues, things are in a state of transition. “At present, there are many attractive theaters in Tokyo,” says Mark Roberts, a film lecturer at Temple University Japan. “However, going forward they will come under increasing stress. It is highly likely that with the ongoing restructuring of distribution and exhibition, a number of the smaller theaters will close.” Indeed, several of them already have. Ebisu Garden Cinema, the home-away-from-home for Woody Allen and Michael Moore, closed its doors in 2011 and European film stalwart Theatre Cinema in Ginza lowered its house lights for the last time this summer. A trio of Audrey Hepburn films, including 1954's Sabrina, returns to the screen this fall. U © 1951 MID CENTURY FILM PRODUCTIONS LTD NESCO statistics reveal that despite the long ticket counter lines you may encounter when you go to see The Wolverine this fall, theater attendance is actually slipping. For 40 years, Japanese people have been to movie theaters 2.0 t imes a yea r on average. Recently that number has fallen to 1.5, compared to 4.5 in Australia and 5.4 in the US. B-movie director Edgar G. Ulmer’s The Man Roberts points to a lack From Planet X will screen this fall at Cinema Vera. of government support. “Despite its nationalist bluster, the Japanese government has very weak policies on film culture and no policy whatsoever on film education,” he explains. “This is visible in the low level of film literacy among young people in Japan, and the fact that many domestic productions can no longer be exported.” Another factor is the rise of the multiplex, the first of which appeared in Japan in 1993 (Warner Mycal Ebina). They were first concentrated in suburban areas, where land is ample, but are now encroaching on urban areas. “They have many screens and book major Hollywood movies as well as art house cinema,” theater owner Naito explains. “So small theaters cannot book the kind of movies that they used to.” Yet another threat exists in the proliferation of multiplexes: the spread of digital distribution. As major studios pressure larger theaters to go digital, smaller ones either refuse or can’t afford the switch from analog. “Japanese major studios will someday decide to no longer maintain their 35mm print archives,” Naito muses. “That will mean the end of the revival house business.” But a new generation of fans is working to postpone that day. Naito was pleasantly surprised when the crowd of men over 60 coming to his theater to see samurai flicks recently grew to include women in their 20s and 30s. “For the moment, there are lots of choices,” Roberts says, “and we should enjoy them while they last. When Metropolis catches him by phone on a sunny late summer day at a London park, several entertainment business friends pass by, and for good measure are put on the phone to say “hallo.” Gaz and his friends are still basking in the afterglow of the Notting Hill Carnival, London’s annual freewheeling celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture. Mayall, the 55-year-old son of blues legend John Mayall, has run a stage at the festival for years. “For the last two years Mick Jones has come up and sung ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go,’” he drops casually. “I’m the only guy who still has live bands. To get funding we go to the arts council, because it costs a fortune to put it on. We build a huge stage, a DJ tower and take over a whole block.” Needless to say, Mayall’s own ska outfit The Trojans play his Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues stage, an outdoor version of the Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues night he stages every Thursday night in London. At 33 years and counting, the event is London’s longest running one-nighter. While Gaz’s musical education came at the hands of his father, his musical career emerged from a different angle. “I had a clothes stall in the ‘70s in Kensington Market,” he explains, “and at COURTESY OF SMASH that time my shop was quite big. I would bring a load of records, we’d be listening to ska, old rock, R&B… We had a meeting of kids’ tribes—punks, teddies, skinheads—and one day in ’79 all of a sudden all you could hear was ska up and down the country. Everybody started buying second hand suits and looking really sharp and listening to ska, and I was right in the center of it in my shop. All the bands—Madness, The Specials—would come to hang out.” Mayall launched his club night in 1980, and then followed it up with his own band in 1986. “Ska was about being an international music form—not just American music, but about our homegrown mish-mash, which we called ska,” he says of his motive for creating The Trojans. “When I started my own band I wanted to push the border a bit further,” he continues. “So I introduced Celtic music to the mix, with bagpipes, whistles and fiddles, and showed how you can have archaic Celtic music—even Japanese or Russian music—and mix that into Afro-Caribbean beats. I try to incorporate all this music that I love with a passion, because at the end of the day all music is a fusion of something that came before it. It’s all about bringing together people from different tribes, and I’ve always wanted to be right at the hub of that musical wheel.” With Gaz’s various endeavors keeping him busy (and hard to reach), and the band’s lineup shifting due to events both happy (children) and sad (suicide), The Trojans are an occasional affair. art THE OLYMPICS ARE COMING! Preparing for 2020 by looking back at 1964 By C.B. Liddell I t will be hard for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to make the same kind of impact on the city and the country as the last event of its kind, held here 49 years ago. Tokyo 1964 was undoubtedly special. It marked an important watershed in the country’s history and influenced so much, from architecture and infrastructure to the social mood and the international perception of Japan, which, of course, greatly improved. To coincide with the International Olympic Committee’s decision on the 2020 venue, the Edo-Tokyo Museum bravely decided to host an exhibition entitled “The Olympics Are Coming!” looking at the art, posters, photography and various odds and ends from the 1964 games. Among the 18 musicians on Smash It! Mayall jokes that the band is something of a Buena Vista Social Club of UK ska. “I went back to the basics with this one,” he says of the disc. “There’s rocksteady, calypso, mento, and instruments like the bagpipes that you’d only hear with the Trojans. We take it back to the basic Trojans story, which is about a load of people coming together who represent the multiracial backbone of London. We started at a pivotal turning point in London society where that really began, around ’79-’80.” The connection between Gaz and Japan isn’t limited to Megumi and the vinyl release of Smash It! The Trojans have long considered Japan a second home. “The first time I’d ever been to Japan, I’d just had three wisdom teeth removed and my first live-in girlfriend had left me,” Gaz recalls. “The phone rang, and it was Koichi Hanafusa of Japanese promoter Smash, and he said, ‘Do you want to come to Japan?’” Thus was launched a bond between Mayall and Smash that has deepened over time. Regulars at Smash’s Fuji Rock Festival may have noticed a tall, gangly man at the entrance to the Palace of Wonder stage—Gaz’s brother Jason. “Jason was the tour manager for the Trojans in the ’80s and I introduced him to Masahiro Hidaka,” Gaz says of the head of Smash. “They got on and Jason ended up establishing Smash’s London office. I haven’t done them all but Jason has done every one.” Club Quattro, Oct 18. See concert listings (popular) for details. expressways, had quite the opposite effect. Special efforts were made concerning the weather, as well. Unusually, the 1964 “Summer Olympics” were actually held in the autumn, quite sensibly in view of Tokyo’s terrible summer heat and humidity. The date chosen for the all-important opening ceremony (October 10) was selected because, statistically, it was the day of the year most likely to be sunny, and therefore a meteorological representation of the national symbol. The actual items from the 1964 Olympics— the torch used to light the Olympic flame, the vest of the runner who carried it, blazers of the officials, the programs and souvenirs— inevitably have the slightly sad atmosphere of mementos and nostalgia, but there is also a sense of a great epic event of the past, one that united the nation and successfully repackaged it for the boom times that followed. With the problems caused by the 2011 earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear accident, as well as ongoing criticism of the government’s priorities, it may be difficult for Japan to recapture the sense of naive optimism that preceded the 1964 Olympics, but if it can be done anywhere, it can be done by visiting the Edo-Tokyo Museum. As Tokyo cools down, Metropolis looks at some new titles to fill out your bookshelf. My Awesome Japan Adventure By Rebecca Otowa Tuttle, 2013, 48pp, ¥1,800 Writer and long-time Japan resident Rebecca Otowa provides an engaging introduction to the culture, society, food and fun of the country in this children’s book. Rather than take a encyclopedic approach with entries on sushi and ninja, Otowa presents a fictional, generously illustrated travelogue from the perspective of an American fifth grade boy on a four-month homestay. Entertaining and essential reading that presents little ones growing up in Japan with the information they need to survive. Jet Black and the Ninja Wind By Leza Lowitz and Shogo Oketani Tuttle, 2013, 320pp, ¥1,800 Due out in early November, Jet Black continues the series of Japan-themed “young adult ” titles that publisher Tuttle started with last year’s Samurai Awakening. Clearly appealing to the global popularity of the Twilight and Hunger Games franchises, this genre is a new one for Tuttle. In JBATNW, the title character is a teenage girl in America with little connection to her Japanese heritage. When her mother dies, she discovers she is the end of a long line of ninja. The action quickly moves to Japan, where she must fight off hired assassins in order to protect a family treasure and ancient culture. Metropolis has an advance copy of Jet Black for one lucky reader. Email giveaways@metropolis. co.jp and answer: What is a female ninja is called? From the Fatherland, with Love By Ryu Murakami Pushkin Press, 2013, 672pp, ¥3,059 Often referred to as “the other Murakami,” the Coin Locker Babies author’s work has taken a political slant in recent years. His latest offering begins in 2010, as Japan is hit by global economic decline and homelessness is rampant. North Korea sees Japan’s weakness as an opportunity and sends in forces, while publicly denouncing them as rebels to avoid repercussions. South Korea, the US and China are all too afraid of inciting a full-scale war and so the decision is left to the dithering Japanese government. Like all great works of speculative fiction, it plays on the fears of the day, and since its 2005 release in Japanese, the North Korea situation has received increased media coverage. However, the main political message is a critique of the pathetic indecision of those in power, the ineffectiveness of bureaucracy and the collective malaise of the Japanese people. It makes for a thought-provoking and entertaining ride through a Japan darker than the one we live in. William Bradbury Evil and The Mask By Fuminori Nakamura Soho Crime, 2013, 356pp, ¥1,404 The latest novel by the Kenzaburo Oe Prize winner starts out with a unique premise—an 11-year-old boy is i n for me d by h is father that his purpose on earth is to be “cancer,” a role of pure evil that has been passed through his family for generations. He has until his 14th birthday to free himself from his destiny. The tale raises questions about the role of fate in our lives. If we’re destined to do something repellent, can we escape it by acting to cause the opposite effects? This question is memorably asked in Minority Report, though Nakamura goes for a more meditative approach. Through much of the story, the boy contemplates his role in the universe, the morality of his actions and the struggle between nature and nurture. Some of these ideas will stay with you for some time. WB A Tale For The Time Being By Ruth Ozeki Cannongate Books Ltd, March 11 2013, 432pp, ¥1,198 Ruth Ozeki’s latest starts with a character (based on the author) finding a journal washed up near her quiet Canadian residence. Is it a remnant of the 2011 tsunami? Is the writer of the diary, a 16-year-old Japanese schoolgirl named Nao, still alive? The character and the reader can only speculate. Shortlisted for this year's Man Booker Prize, the novel features large chunks of information on Japanese culture with over 150 footnotes, many of which longtime Japan residents will find unnecessary. Ruth finds herself wanting verification of the story and the internet plays a vital role in connecting some of the missing pieces. Nao’s narrative illuminates various social problems in Japan, with a focus on bullying depicted in all its harrowing extremes. Her lack of self-pity is what makes her character so engaging, and she is determined not to let the cruelty of others destroy her life. HARAJUKU/AOYAMA Roonee 247 Photography w Known primarily through massive sculptures whose scale prevent their overseas display, Michelangelo is an artist whose works usually require a trip to Italy to be understood. Through a special partnership with the Casa Buonarroti (Florence) collection of Michelangelo’s descendants, this exhibit provides visitors with a unique chance to experience 60 pieces ranging from “Madonna of the Stairs,” an early-period marble relief created when the artist was around 15 years old, to little-known letters and manuscripts. Through the show, the curators aim to shed light on the human side of the Renaissance master and “the anguish” that accompanied his artistic production. Well, consider this refreshingly original a n d s u r p r i s i n g ly e n te r t a i n i n g sleeper a more real-world approach to what teenagers might do with s uch s up e r p owe rs . T h re e h i g h school kids (Dane DeHaan. Alex Russell & Michael B. Jordan) gain amazing telekinetic abilities from a presumably alien thingy they’ve discovered in a hole in the ground. It’s all a hoot as they progress from pranks (they are kids) to levitation to full-on Superman flying. But then things start to get dark and disturbing as human nature brings things down to earth, and their powers begin to surpass their ability to handle them responsibly. None of the actors is well known, boosting the film’s believability, and the STEVE JOBS: THE LOST INTERVIEW NEW In 1995, Steve Jobs sat down for a rare, 70-minute interview. It was just before he would return from his forced exile from Apple, become its CEO and go on to present the world with such very cool, society-changing items as the iPhone, the iPod, the iPad and iTunes. A snippet of the interview was used in a PBS program; the rest lost somewhere in transit. But recently a copy was found, and it’s something that everyone should see, wherever his or her interests lie. The leading visionary of our times, then 40, is candid and expansive, articulate and focused; even funny. Highly recommended. (70 min) eiga A LORDS OF SALEM dialogue is natural . The “ found footage” approach is a little forced and annoying until you realize how effective it’s being. Best of all, it’s self-contained, with no sequel set TRASHED NEW Both realists and alarmists will benefit from a look at this committed eco-doc by Candida Brady. In it, a genuinely appalled Jeremy Irons takes us on a tour of global paradises – a garbage-strewn Lebanese beach, toxic landfills in Britain, a hospital for deformed Agent Orange kids i n Vi e t n a m , h i g h -te m p e r at u re garbage incinerators in the US -- that indicate how badly and how rapidly our refuse-disposal practices are trashing our planet to the point of no return. Did you know that even biodegradable shopping bags create a lumpy plastic soup in our oceans? Makes its points strongly and offers solutions. (98 min) ALEXIS WUILLAUME s those of us living here who are not Japanese—or not fully Japanese—know, the insular nature of Japanese society tends to exclude us . This phenomenon cuts deep to those who actually have partial Japanese blood, and thus feel a part of society here, even if that society does not reciprocate. The new documentary Hafu, by Megumi Nishikura and Lara Perez Takagi, poignantly investigates the lives of present-day mixed race/mixed nationality Japanese people and openly challenges Japanese society to be more accepting. It details the lives of five hafu, the Japanese term for mixed race or mixed nationality folk, and details their trials in dealing with a culture that seems incapable of integrating them. Those appearing span a range of ages and cultural backgrounds, from Venezuela and Mexico to Ghana, Korea and Australia. The most gripping case concerns the Mexican-Japanese pre-adolescent boy Alex, who has clearly been traumatized by mistreatment from his schoolmates and teachers due to his background. The film follows him from Japan to Mexico and back again as he comes to terms with his identity and living in Japan. The documentary is clearly aimed at Japanese people and, while occasionally approaching preachy, it is a heartfelt and deeply human effort to encourage Japan to be an openly multicultural society. But something’s missing. Enter Secret Agent Lucy Wilde (voiced by a spot-on Kristen Wiig), a bumbling emissary from the Anti-Villain League, which hopes to recruit him to track down a mystery baddie. Personally, I liked this slightly better than the first, which I found a tad predictable. The fun story along with the rapid-fire sight gags and one-liners kept me amused. Smart enough for grownups, zany enough for kids. Japanese title: Kaitou Gru no Minion Kiki Ippatsu. (98 min) movie news F BYZANTIUM Think the vampire genre is played out? Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with a Vampire) begs to differ, and backs it up with this mesmerizing, artfully tattered film about a 200-year-old vagabonding mother/daughter team (a fantastic, cast-against-type Gemma Arterton and an impeccable, highly believable Saoirse Ronan). Mom, a hooker, favors the sex & violence thing, while the forever 16-year-old daughter takes a kinder, gentler approach. It’s a well-told, satisfying and stylish story that unfolds gradually, often shifting between the two women and times past. Look at it as an antidote to Twilight. I n Jason Reitman’s new film Labor Day, Winslet plays an agoraphobic single mother who realizes the mysterious stranger (Josh Brolin) who shows up at her door just might be the escaped convict the police have been looking for. “I have admiration for mothers everywhere, whether they’re single or not,” the actress said before the film’s premier at the Toronto International Film Festival. “It turns you inside out.” The star also mentioned that 13-year-old Gatlinn Griffith, who plays her son in the film, is a few years older than her own little ones, giving her glimpse of what she has in store. Winslet will soon have more opportunities to practice her parenting, as she is currently expecting child number four with husband Ned Rocknroll (yup, that’s his name). The aromatic and ever-so-spicy Alsatian Domaine Zind Humbrecht Gewürztraminer seamlessly melded with the young ginger and foie gras. Another magical combination was the fruity and bold Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir from Sonoma served with duck and spicy chocolate. As our server Sam succinctly said, “this wine has attitude.” It was a whimsical experience to the very end. Before dessert, we were handed goggles and advised to shield ourselves with our napkins. Things went snap, crackle, and pop on the plate—and then in our mouths (thanks to some cool LN2). We made a mental note to return for the 6-course Saturday brunch. The ten-course meal (¥11,000 members/¥14,000 non-members) passed quickly in two hours. There is almost too much to take in, from the preparations in front of you to listening to the explanations about the wine and each course. It’s sensory overload, but in a very good way. If you’re not a communicator, you’ll be faced with either no time or becoming ultra specific. Once you go to the nth degree, you’ll notice others won’t mind because they know yours is made up. The ups and downs in energy are part of the process. Keep going. Let life motivate your choices. Venus, your ruler, balances the way you may be feeling this week. It transits your sector of partnership. Mercury enters on Sunday, knocking on the door for an opportunity to create a meeting of the minds. This could be pivotal. Let go of your point of view just temporarily. While you can always go back to how you see things, you’ll open up a route—not to mention a window—to let abundance in. March 20, 21 - April 19, 20 ♥♥♥ ¥¥ ♣♣ GEMINI Apr 20, 21~May 20, 21 ♥♥ ¥¥¥¥ ♣♣ CANCER May 21, 22~June 20, 21 ♥♥♥♥ ¥¥ ♣♣♣♣ June 21, 22~July 22, 23 ♥♥♥ ¥¥¥ ♣♣♣ It’s a quiet morning and then *bam!* suddenly it’s all go. Easy for you to handle, though. When a Gemini lets their mind soar, no one can keep up with them. Jupiter in your solar second house uses up your finances, but at the same time expands them. The ebb and flow of this money tide keeps getting bigger and is a cycle you can enjoy. Mercury enters your work and health sector to reveal a helpful discovery. Jupiter continues to transit your sign. You may wonder where you’ll get all your energy as being flavor of the month has its ups and downs. The Moon in Cancer on Friday and Saturday lets you chill out and prepare for Mercury entering your romantic sector. Venus is already there, so communication gets the ball rolling more easily than you may think. Just watch out for those snappy comebacks. LEO VIRGO Wise decisions with what nurtures you means you may see returns or dividends this week. Vesta, the temple priestess, and Ceres are both in your solar second house of money. You can’t undo what has gone before, but you can restore what you have and enjoy the renaissance of rebuilding. Getting ready now with a step by step approach means you can pace yourself. A partner is there for you. It’s easy to let go of what has held you back this week. A lot of this comes from the opposition of Neptune to your sign. As you’re in a mode of constant flow and change, you begin to see the constants. You’re actually ahead of the pack, due to your innate sense of service and devotion to your ideals. Ceres, the nurturer, and Vesta, priestess of wisdom, combine in Virgo to balance what’s unfair. LIBRA SCORPIO Ever wonder where your place truly is? Well, wherever you like! Know that the constant change you experience with Uranus opposite your sign keeps you in the best possible position. Freedom is a big ticket item, and expanding your confidence comes easily. Mercury leaves Libra and enters your money house on Sunday. That’s something to consider as you shore up your resources to give yourself time to play. You may think that the concrete jungle (or the leafy one) is just not for you right now. There’s nothing like a bit of truth to help you make a decision in your favor. You can be busy every moment this week, but you may choose to take time to leave open a window of possibility. The words you think are the whispers to your feelings, so be careful of your current “I am” statements! Love is here if you want it. With Venus in your sign, what kind do you prefer? SAGITTARIUS CAPRICORN You’re a naturally popular sort, with your willingness to see the good in everything. Even when you agree the world has a shadow, it never undoes your optimism for long. Thank goodness! You push through walls of wonder and find yourself in a position only a person with a true sense of self can enjoy. If there has to be a light in the darkness, you are it. Pressures at work turn to personal paths of power. The weekend begins with a blend and balance of all that you love and wish to achieve. If that means having an early evening or hiding from the crowds, so be it. If you’d rather be out with the night lights or wish upon a star, you’re right there with the best of them. Power to grow and change becomes effortless as resistance towards achievement has fallen away. All that is left is a sincere connection with how you feel and whom you love. AQUARIUS PISCES What can you think of to do that you haven’t thought of before? It’s becoming impossible to deny you are living from your heart even with the presto-changeo energy everywhere. Art, and expressing your passion becomes your raison d’etre. Somehow the pieces fall together as the template continues to rearrange itself. Following the thread reveals that the pot of gold is found at the other end of your feelings. There is only so much you can do with all the energy flowing in faster and faster. This is a ‘Neptune in Pisces’ event so you may become the speaker for what is going on. The Grand Water Trine that kept the balls up in the air in August has given way to an ‘every man for himself’ feeling. Grand crosses this week are too numerous to count so choose what you love best. Chinese tourists were arriving in Tokyo with fat wallets and a yen for shopping. It was estimated that by 2013, Chinese tourists would overtake South Koreans as the largest nationality of foreign visitors gracing Japan’s shores—a rather giddy projection. For obvious reasons, this didn’t happen. Instead, according to JTA statistics, the number of Chinese visitors dropped by over a quarter this year, even with an attractively weak yen. Leaving the woes of the travel industry aside, it’s staggering how t h is pol it ica l d ispute is upsett ing what shou ld have been an i nc rea si ng ly posit ive relat ionship. Admittedly, many Japanese have less t han positive feelings towards China (somet hing pol l after poll has found), but it seemed the younger generation was a bit more open-m inded about t heir next-door neighbor. Larger contingents of Japanese students were choosing to study at Chinese universities—nearly a quarter of outbound students, in fact, were heading to the Middle Kingdom in 2007. And as well they should. The West is stagnant, with little prospect of robust growth. China admittedly is slowing, but there’s still plenty of growth left to do. The Japanese community in Beijing keeps a low profile, but they are behind a number of successful business ventures in the capital, ranging from slick whisky bars to hippy-dippy spas and upscale hair salons. Not to mention—someone’s making all that plastic tat in Daiso, and it sure isn’t Japan. S o w h y a r e n’t mor e y ou n g entrepreneurial Japanese taking advantage of the low start-up costs in China? In my experience, it is fear. I recently invited some Japanese friends of mine to come stay with me in Beijing. While I tried to persuade them that Beijing is actually quite safe (especially with a “local” escorting them around), they had unfortunately seen the frenzied protests in front of the Japanese embassy. They canceled their trip. I didn’t quite blame them. Chinese nationalism can get ugly, and there is widespread belief that the Beijing authorities purposely allow these protests to get out of hand—it makes for great distraction from the domestic problems the Chinese face. Yet there is a significant portion of young Chinese that have a great love for Japanese products. Uniqlo and Muji have become staples in Chinese malls all over the country, and Gulou, the haunt of Chinese hipsters, is full of contraband translations of Japanese manga, boutique zakka shops, cosplay groups and a clearly Japan-inspired cat café. And while tour groups may have slashed their numbers, independent travelers are still taking advantage of the lower yen and cheaper airfare. A couple of (admittedly white-collar) Chinese friends of mine have traveled to Japan this year, and all came back with rave reviews over the clean air, beautiful scenery and polite manners of the locals. We need more of t his. W hile “grassroots” internationalization is no longer quite the buzzword it was back in the ’80s, Japan needs it again, only this time, they need to direct it towards their Asian neighbors. After all, the JET program was primarily launched in response to being “misunderstood” by the world (read: Americans). While many complain the program didn’t actually help improve English skills in Japan, it was a big success in introducing thousands of young foreigners to Japanese life every year. Many ’90s alumni of JET have gone on to influential positions in business and government, providing expertise based on actual years of living in the country. Imagine how this could be applied to China. There is a large cohort of young Chinese already interested in Japanese pop culture—if Japan invited the most promising candidates to live and work on their shores, then perhaps the wide gap between these two countries could be breached. After all, JET currently has only 77 Chinese participating in their program—compare that to, say, the nearly 500 Canadians on board. Not to say Canada isn’t important (although I might, stubborn American that I am), but Japan’s relationship with the world’s second-largest economy should take precedence. If more Ch i nese yout h were selected to live on Japanese shores, perhaps the mutual fear and loathi ng t hat cha rac ter i zes t he t wo biggest powers in Asia would start to diminish. Forget politicians— neither government will be able to take charge on this matter. Small, intimate exchange programs are the way forward. Perhaps then, Chinese won’t think that the outrageous views of blustery politicians actually reflect the majority view, and Japanese will start to believe that China’s “Peaceful Rise” isn’t merely media hype—or worse, a clever ruse.
