NORTH BAY, ONTARIO, CANADA
Small University. Big Thinking.
If you’re ready to unleash your potential for excellence,
consider all the advantages that a small, smart university has to
offer. We’re a primarily undergraduate university where helping
students to realize their full potential is our first priority. Student
success is directly related to quality teaching, and our A+
results in three prominent surveys indicate that these are areas
of student satisfaction. Our goal is to provide a high quality,
personalized learning experience – one student at a time.
Genevieve de Bruyn, this year’s
Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU)
President, comes to us from Renfrew,
Ontario, and is currently in her 4th year of
studies in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
Sociology program with the Orientation to
Teaching option.
Having always been certain that she
wanted to teach, Genevieve came to
Nipissing University because she knew
several teachers who had obtained their
teaching degree here and had spoken very
highly of their experience. Since coming
to Nipissing, she has immersed herself in
student advocacy and has consistently been
involved in student-oriented activities,
while keeping her focus on a career in
education and maintaining a significant
level of volunteerism. Genevieve volunteers
with Frontier College Students for Literacy,
has been a Frosh Leader for two years and
was voted Best Female Frosh Leader for
September 2006. As well, she served as the
Social Sciences Representative to NUSU
in 06/07. Genevieve returns to her home
town each spring to do contract work at a
local elementary school through a program
called Tutors in the School, and volunteers
regularly on university breaks.
As for advice for all future students, “I
encourage every student to become involved;
learning is about asking questions and
understanding the world around you. It
takes effort but it is always worth it,” says
Genevieve.

Small University. Big Advantages.
Imagine a university in which every student has a voice. Where faculty, staff and students get to know each other by
name. Where classrooms, hallways and social events are the
venue for lively debate and self expression. The Nipissing
experience is more than classes, books and studies. It’s time
spent deciding what shape your life will take, finding out about
yourself and exploring new interests. It’s a journey made within
an unparalleled sense of community.
Vicky Samuel is an exceptional
example of one who has come from a
diverse and tumultuous background
and who has travelled from afar to
attend Nipissing University. Along with
her parents and three sisters, Vicky left
Rwanda in 1994 and eventually settled
in Malawi. While there, Vicky was able
to complete her Grade 12 with excellent
marks and applied to the World University
Service of Canada (WUSC). WUSC
submitted her name and programs of
interest to WUSC-partnered universities.
Nipissing saw a perfect candidate in
Vicky and offered her acceptance into the
Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
Vicky arrived as a refugee student in
2004.
Now in her third year of the program,
Vicky is looking forward to being a
Residence Don again this year and
assisting other students with the transition
from secondary school to university.
Of her experience she says, “I’m really
enjoying Nipissing and Canada. All the
people I’ve met have been very helpful
and friendly. It has been reassuring for
me to attend a university where I can
get to know my professors and the other
students.”
What is the Nipissing Advantage?
Individual Attention and
Research
Students have an opportunity to work
one-on-one with their professors. Many
students conduct undergraduate research
– almost unheard of at larger institutions.
Innovative Programming
Nipissing is committed to improving
its facilities and implementing new
technology to enhance its programs
— whether in the $1.7 million dollar
Central Analytical Facility, the Nursing
Simulation Lab, the laptop-integrated
Bachelor of Education program, or
with adaptive technology used to assist
students with learning challenges.
Nipissing is enthusiastic about
developing programs and partnerships
that increase civic and global involvement
and that cultivate leadership skills. Apart
from the many international exchange
partnerships we enjoy, Biidaaban is a new
community service-learning program
that will see students partnering closely
with community groups, allowing them
to apply theories learned in class to real
world situations. Nipissing’s partnership
with the Toronto Star and Craig and
Marc Kielburger, founders of Free the
Children and Nipissing University
honourary degree recipients, is another
example of our commitment to educate
students and encourage them to voice
their opinions on social justice issues.
High Employment Rate
Nipissing boasts a 95.3 % employment
rate six months after graduation and a
98.4% employment rate two years after
graduation, which is above the provincial
average*. (Source: Government of
Ontario’s 2005 performance indicators)
Small Class Sizes
Our average class has 34 students and a
student to faculty ratio of 21:1.
Safety
Nipissing is considered one of the
safest universities in Canada. We offer
a campus walk program and security is
available 24 hours a day.
City Transit Pass
Included in all full-time student incidental
fees is a City of North Bay transit pass to
make transportation a breeze.

NIPISSING UNIVERSITY — NORTH BAY CAMPUS
North Bay Campus
Nipissing University is proud to be a
primarily undergraduate university,
offering a variety of degrees in Arts,
Science and Education, and is committed
to providing a safe and personalized
student experience. The main campus
is located in North Bay, Ontario, and is
situated within a stunning 291 hectares
of pristine Canadian Shield forest. With
a plethora of lakes and forests at the
doorstep, all students enjoy the natural
beauty of our surroundings, while
researchers in the environmental sciences
benefit greatly from the university’s idyllic
location and cutting-edge lab facilities.
Nipissing University’s residences are rated
the finest and most modern in Ontario.
All first-year students are guaranteed a
single room in residence. The university
features four residence complexes and
offers just over 1,000 beds.
Muskoka Campus
In August of 1996, Nipissing University
opened a satellite campus in Bracebridge,
Ontario. This year, the Muskoka campus
is expanding and facilities will serve all of
Muskoka as well as the outlying areas and
will offer significant improvements for our
students, from increased course selection
to technologically advanced classrooms.
Students have the opportunity to study
full-time or part-time toward three
different Arts and Science degrees; Child
and Family Studies, Culture and the Arts
or a 3-year liberal arts degree. Students
can also opt to do more course work in a
specific discipline, positioning themselves
for further studies toward an Honours
degree, which would be completed from
our North Bay campus.
Brantford Campus
In September 2002, Nipissing University
opened the Brantford Campus. Nipissing
and Wilfrid Laurier universities offer a
collaborative Concurrent Bachelor of
Arts/Bachelor of Education program.
You’ll earn a BA (Honours) in
Contemporary Studies from Laurier and
a BEd from Nipissing. All required BEd
courses are delivered in Brantford. You
may enroll in either the Primary/Junior
( Junior Kindergarten through Grade 6)
or Junior/Intermediate (Grades 4 through
10) division, and you’ll have your choice
of placements in Public or Catholic
schools (from eight boards within 40 km
of Brantford) to practice teach.
2006 National Survey
of Student Engagment
Nipissing University students
demonstrated a high level of satisfaction
with their educational experience, wherein
90% of first-year students and 89% of
those in their final year rated their overall
educational experience as
good or excellent.

Small University. Big Ideas.
Students are choosing to study at Nipissing because of its
friendly and personable atmosphere, small class sizes, access
to reputable professors, quality of teaching and the availability
of undergraduate research opportunities.
Derek Stacey has a lot to say about
student scholarship, research and
accessibility to education. This outstanding
scholar, peer tutor, student grader,
researcher, accomplished musician and
ultimate Frisbee coach and competitor,
graduated from Nipissing in June ’06 having
achieved both the Governor General’s Silver
Medal and the President’s Gold Medal for
attaining the highest academic standing
within the Faculty of Arts and Science and
the Bachelor of Business Administration
program. Equally impressive, Derek was
awarded one of the most prestigious honours
when the Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) granted
him a $17,500.00 Canadian Graduate
Scholarship to pursue his Master of Arts in
Economics degree. He has since garnered an
additional SSHRC fellowship to pursue his
PhD. These accomplishments, Derek is quick
to point out, were assisted by the availability
and quality of Nipissing’s guaranteed
entrance scholarships and the opportunities
that smaller class sizes and easy access to
professors provided.
“One of the things that attracted me to
Nipissing”, says Derek, “was the scholarship
program. Another perk was the opportunity,
generally reserved for post-graduate
students, to research alongside my
professors. The experience has definitely
been an advantage through the application
process to a graduate program.”
One Student at a Time.
Is Nipissing right for you?
You’ll feel it the moment you step on
campus. Over 60% of our students
come from out of town, which means
most everyone is eager to cultivate
relationships with other out-of-towners
and North Bay students will be eager to
show you around. The people here want
you to succeed and they want you to
enjoy yourself while doing it!
Our main campus has 4,689 full-time
students and is located in North Bay,
Ontario, a city of 56,000 people. It’s
considered one of the safest places to live.
Although the name North Bay may give
the impression that it’s distant, it is in
fact, only a 3.5 hour drive from Toronto
and 4 hours from Ottawa.
What can I study?
Nipissing University offers over
20 different majors in a variety of
disciplines. You’ll benefit from the
personal contact with your professors,
the quality of teaching and the student
services we have to support you.

for the quality of its programs and its
innovative laptop learning initiative.
Nipissing University offers BA/BEd
and BSc/BEd Concurrent Education
programs or a one-year BEd program after
completion of an undergraduate degree.
Nipissing also offers two unique
opportunities called Orientation to
Teaching (OTT) and Pre-Education

Gender Equality and
Social Justice
You believe in basic human rights. You
recognize that thinking about gender
also means thinking about power.
Understanding how power works in
the worlds we build is one of the most
important keys to redressing why some
people seem to have more than others.
Gender Equality and Social Justice at
Nipissing is one of the most innovative
programs in Canada and each one of our
courses speaks to questions of justice.
In first-year, the program offers students
a broad exposure to the historical and
contemporary debates that underpin
questions of gender equality and social
justice. Students will learn about social
movements such as civil rights, women’s
rights, queer rights and environmental
rights as well as some of the controversial
debates surrounding global travel,
reproductive rights, pornography
and identity politics. Students may
develop interests in critical studies of
popular culture; the politics of resisting
inequality through the law; the United
Nations and Truth Commissions;
transnational organizing for social
justice; histories of colonization; feminist
philosophies; postmodernism; and the
intersections of race, class, ability, sex
and gender.
Our students have gone on to graduate
studies as well as to successful careers
in law, international development and
research, communications, government,
health, research and advocacy, media, and
education. For more information please
visit www.nipissingu.ca/gesj.
Geography
You may want to ensure that your
generation leaves a strong and healthy
environment for the next, or you may
be interested in the rocks, trees and
water that make up the Earth. Perhaps
you’re intrigued by city grids from
the window of an airplane or you’re
always the designated navigator on road
trips. The field of Geography is very
diversified and at Nipissing you can
choose between four degree programs;
Geography, Environmental Geography,
Geography of Regional Planning and
International Development (GRID),
and Environmental Science and Physical
Geography. Also offered is a certificate
in Geomatics as well as a certificate
in Environmental Management. In
first-year, you’ll be introduced to
Human and Physical Geography. If
you take Environmental Geography
or Environmental Science and
Physical Geography, you’ll also take an
introductory course in Environmental
Science. If you’re an Honours
Geography student you’ll

Nursing
The number of heart-felt thanks
that patients give nurses everyday
is immeasurable. Most of us will be
admitted to a hospital during our
lifetime. You may remember getting
your tonsils out, having an operation, or
perhaps you were with a loved one in the
last stages of their life.
In first-year, you’ll be exposed to a
broad-based curriculum that covers the
physical, emotional, social and spiritual
aspects of health. Most importantly,
you’ll experience nursing right away in
our unique job shadowing experience,
where you will work side-by-side with
nurses in practice and in our state-ofthe-art Simulation Lab, where you will
demonstrate your skills in simulated
patient case scenarios. In addition, those
interested will have an opportunity
before graduation to experience an

It’s a wonderful privilege in life to be
a nurse. Nurses make an invaluable
contribution to the health and well-being
of individuals, families and communities.
As the needs of health care increase,
Nipissing feels it’s even more important
that we graduate nurses who are
professionally prepared for a technologyenhanced, fast-paced hospital
environment, research opportunities
and/or graduate studies. With a Nursing
degree you can work in public health,
community and hospital nursing, health
education, case management or become

Philosophy
The Greek word philosophia means love
of wisdom. What is knowledge? What
is the meaning of life? What is real?

debates and discussions around these ageold questions and how they relate to life
today including areas such as film, gender
issues and existentialism.
The study of philosophy will help you
learn to think clearly and abstractly, and
to discuss the possibility and nature of
moral standards. In first-year, students
are introduced to Philosophy and take
elective courses. If you are taking an
Honours degree, it is important to note
that you will combine majors, adding to
the breadth of your degree.
Studying Philosophy will prepare you
well for law school, graduate studies
and careers in teaching, journalism,
administration, government, and social
work. For more information please visit

artistic development. The program
in Religions and Cultures uses an
interdisciplinary and non-confessional
approach to study the world’s religious
traditions. Anthropological, historical,
philosophical, psychological and literarycritical methods are all used to broaden
our knowledge and appreciation of
religion in the ancient and modern
world.
In first-year, students will be introduced
to the teachings and history of the
world’s religious traditions. In upper
year classes, more specific examination
of how religious thought and practice
inform cultural identities will be the
focus. Courses such as “Death and
Immortality,” “Religion and Violence”
and “Sacred Cinema” are just a few
examples of what is offered in this
dynamic program where the interplay
between religion and culture is critically
explored. In depth study of particular
religious traditions will coincide with
investigation into the influence of
religion on contemporary ethics and
politics as well as the role of religion
in the construction of gender and its
presentation in the media.
Students graduating from this program
may go on to graduate studies, pursue
work in the area of cultural affairs and

Sociology
You often wonder how shifts in society
will affect us. Day-care, for example, is
a common part of life today, but was
almost unheard of 20 years ago. Are daycare children more independent as adults
because of their experience, and has it
shaped the world we know today? In our
not-so-distant past we looked after the
aged in our homes. As our population
ages will we see a change in attitudes
toward the elderly? Considering the
age of civilization, computers are a
relatively new phenomenon to our
world. Are computers creating an
anti-social society?
As a Sociology student you’ll examine
these shifts and the ways in which social
structures and institutions such as class,
family, community, and power influence
society. You’ll also explore how social
problems such as crime and abuse
affect society.
In upper years, you’ll have the
opportunity to complete undergraduate
research. This unique experience will
provide you with a distinct advantage
after you graduate.
Our students have gone on to graduate
studies or successful careers in
government, health care, law school,
corrections, research, business and
teaching. For more information please

Small University. Big Life.
Our residences are the finest accommodations you’ll find in
the province and single rooms are guaranteed to all first-year
students coming directly from secondary school. Residence
life is about meeting new people and exploring new ideas. It’s
about studying, socializing, living independently and making
your own choices.
Ian Wassink, from Walkerton, Ontario,
made his decision to come to Nipissing based
on the reputation of the Faculty of Education
and information he received through a
liaison visit at his high school. He was
attracted to the unique advantages offered
in a small university setting where classes
are small, professor to student interaction
is high, residences have the top rating in
Canada, and where a generous entrance
scholarship program is in place.
Suite Style Residences
There are three suite styled residences.
Founders House and Chancellors
House, located on the lower campus

Megan Stacey graduated in June ’07
from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing
program. A directed individual with intuitive
leadership abilities, Megan was attracted
to Nipissing because she wanted to study at
home – she was born and raised in North
Bay – was interested in Nursing, had friends
who attended Nipissing and wanted to
play varsity volleyball. Megan’s aptitude in
setting and accomplishing her goals has put
her in good stead.
International applicants do not typically
qualify for transfer credit for previously
completed post-secondary courses at
non-Canadian institutions. Part-time
university study is not available to
international students. International
secondary school applicants are eligible
for Nipissing’s Entrance Scholarships
starting at $1,250 for “A” average
students.
Megan was awarded with the OCAA Female
Athlete of the Year in 2007 and OCAA
Female Volleyball MVP for three years
running. In addition, for all four years of
her undergraduate studies, she was the
co-captain of the Nipissing Lakers volleyball
team, the Nipissing Female Athlete of the
Year, the Nipissing Female Volleyball MVP,
an OCAA Volleyball League All-Star and the
OCAA Volleyball All Canadian.
Applicants from the
United States
Applicants graduating with a “B”
average from Grade 12 at an accredited
secondary school and presenting high
scores in SAT Reasoning or ACT
examinations including the Writing Test
component and at least two SAT Subject
Tests or AP/IB subjects appropriate to
their proposed area of study are normally
eligible for admission. Scores below 500
in any part of the SAT Reasoning or

U.S. must have completed a minimum of
30 semester credits (45 quarter credits) at
an accredited post-secondary institution
(U.S. applicants who have completed
more than 30 semester credits at an
accredited post-secondary institution
As well as helping to coach in the Nipissing
Lakers summer volleyball camps every year,
in her spare time, Megan volunteered her
professional expertise at the University
Student Health Services TB and Flu Shot
clinics. It seems very appropriate that after
graduating, this driven young woman
accepted a full-time position at the North
Bay General Hospital on the In-patient
Surgical Floor. As for future goals, Megan
says she is “seriously considering the pursuit
of either a Master degree or becoming a
Nurse Practitioner.”
