STUDENT GUIDE 2007 - 2008 WWW.NIPISSINGU.CA NORTH BAY, ONTARIO, CANADA Small University. Big Thinking. If you’re ready to unleash your potential for excellence, consider all the advantages that a small, smart university has to offer. We’re a primarily undergraduate university where helping students to realize their full potential is our first priority. Student success is directly related to quality teaching, and our A+ results in three prominent surveys indicate that these are areas of student satisfaction. Our goal is to provide a high quality, personalized learning experience – one student at a time. Genevieve de Bruyn, this year’s Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) President, comes to us from Renfrew, Ontario, and is currently in her 4th year of studies in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Sociology program with the Orientation to Teaching option. Having always been certain that she wanted to teach, Genevieve came to Nipissing University because she knew several teachers who had obtained their teaching degree here and had spoken very highly of their experience. Since coming to Nipissing, she has immersed herself in student advocacy and has consistently been involved in student-oriented activities, while keeping her focus on a career in education and maintaining a significant level of volunteerism. Genevieve volunteers with Frontier College Students for Literacy, has been a Frosh Leader for two years and was voted Best Female Frosh Leader for September 2006. As well, she served as the Social Sciences Representative to NUSU in 06/07. Genevieve returns to her home town each spring to do contract work at a local elementary school through a program called Tutors in the School, and volunteers regularly on university breaks. As for advice for all future students, “I encourage every student to become involved; learning is about asking questions and understanding the world around you. It takes effort but it is always worth it,” says Genevieve. One Student at a Time. TABLE OF CONTENTS SMALL UNIVERSITY. BIG ADVANTAGES. Where faculty, staff and students get to know each other by name. Where classrooms, hallways and social events are the venue for lively debate and self expression. The Nipissing experience is more than classes, books and studies. It’s time spent deciding what shape your life will take, finding out about yourself and exploring new interests. It’s a journey made within an unparalleled sense of community. Vicky Samuel is an exceptional example of one who has come from a diverse and tumultuous background and who has travelled from afar to attend Nipissing University. Along with her parents and three sisters, Vicky left Rwanda in 1994 and eventually settled in Malawi. While there, Vicky was able to complete her Grade 12 with excellent marks and applied to the World University Service of Canada (WUSC). WUSC submitted her name and programs of interest to WUSC-partnered universities. Nipissing saw a perfect candidate in Vicky and offered her acceptance into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Vicky arrived as a refugee student in 2004. Now in her third year of the program, Vicky is looking forward to being a Residence Don again this year and assisting other students with the transition from secondary school to university. Of her experience she says, “I’m really enjoying Nipissing and Canada. All the people I’ve met have been very helpful and friendly. It has been reassuring for me to attend a university where I can get to know my professors and the other students.” What is the Nipissing Advantage? Individual Attention and Research Students have an opportunity to work one-on-one with their professors. Many students conduct undergraduate research – almost unheard of at larger institutions. Innovative Programming Nipissing is committed to improving its facilities and implementing new technology to enhance its programs — whether in the $1.7 million dollar Central Analytical Facility, the Nursing Simulation Lab, the laptop-integrated Bachelor of Education program, or with adaptive technology used to assist students with learning challenges. Nipissing is enthusiastic about developing programs and partnerships that increase civic and global involvement and that cultivate leadership skills. Apart from the many international exchange partnerships we enjoy, Biidaaban is a new community service-learning program that will see students partnering closely with community groups, allowing them to apply theories learned in class to real world situations. Nipissing’s partnership with the Toronto Star and Craig and Marc Kielburger, founders of Free the Children and Nipissing University honourary degree recipients, is another example of our commitment to educate students and encourage them to voice their opinions on social justice issues. High Employment Rate Nipissing boasts a 95.3 % employment rate six months after graduation and a 98.4% employment rate two years after graduation, which is above the provincial average*. (Source: Government of Ontario’s 2005 performance indicators) Small Class Sizes Our average class has 34 students and a student to faculty ratio of 21:1. Safety Nipissing is considered one of the safest universities in Canada. We offer a campus walk program and security is available 24 hours a day. City Transit Pass Included in all full-time student incidental fees is a City of North Bay transit pass to make transportation a breeze. STUDENTS OUTSIDE CHANCELLORS HOUSE One Student at a Time. A+ For Level of Interaction between Faculty and Students 2006 99% of Nipissing University undergraduate students strongly agree/agree that their professors seemed knowledgeable in their field. NIPISSING UNIVERSITY — NORTH BAY CAMPUS North Bay Campus Nipissing University is proud to be a primarily undergraduate university, offering a variety of degrees in Arts, Science and Education, and is committed to providing a safe and personalized student experience. The main campus is located in North Bay, Ontario, and is situated within a stunning 291 hectares of pristine Canadian Shield forest. With a plethora of lakes and forests at the doorstep, all students enjoy the natural beauty of our surroundings, while researchers in the environmental sciences benefit greatly from the university’s idyllic location and cutting-edge lab facilities. Nipissing University’s residences are rated the finest and most modern in Ontario. All first-year students are guaranteed a single room in residence. The university features four residence complexes and offers just over 1,000 beds. Muskoka Campus In August of 1996, Nipissing University opened a satellite campus in Bracebridge, Ontario. This year, the Muskoka campus is expanding and facilities will serve all of Muskoka as well as the outlying areas and will offer significant improvements for our students, from increased course selection to technologically advanced classrooms. Students have the opportunity to study full-time or part-time toward three different Arts and Science degrees; Child and Family Studies, Culture and the Arts or a 3-year liberal arts degree. Students can also opt to do more course work in a specific discipline, positioning themselves for further studies toward an Honours degree, which would be completed from our North Bay campus. Brantford Campus In September 2002, Nipissing University opened the Brantford Campus. Nipissing and Wilfrid Laurier universities offer a collaborative Concurrent Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education program. You’ll earn a BA (Honours) in Contemporary Studies from Laurier and a BEd from Nipissing. All required BEd courses are delivered in Brantford. Students are choosing to study at Nipissing because of its friendly and personable atmosphere, small class sizes, access to reputable professors, quality of teaching and the availability of undergraduate research opportunities. Derek Stacey has a lot to say about student scholarship, research and accessibility to education. This outstanding scholar, peer tutor, student grader, researcher, accomplished musician and ultimate Frisbee coach and competitor, graduated from Nipissing in June ’06 having achieved both the Governor General’s Silver Medal and the President’s Gold Medal for attaining the highest academic standing within the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Bachelor of Business Administration program. Equally impressive, Derek was awarded one of the most prestigious honours when the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) granted him a $17,500.00 Canadian Graduate Scholarship to pursue his Master of Arts in Economics degree. He has since garnered an additional SSHRC fellowship to pursue his PhD. These accomplishments, Derek is quick to point out, were assisted by the availability and quality of Nipissing’s guaranteed entrance scholarships and the opportunities that smaller class sizes and easy access to professors provided. “One of the things that attracted me to Nipissing”, says Derek, “was the scholarship program. Another perk was the opportunity, generally reserved for post-graduate students, to research alongside my professors. The experience has definitely been an advantage through the application process to a graduate program.” One Student at a Time. Is Nipissing right for you? You’ll feel it the moment you step on campus. Over 60% of our students come from out of town, which means most everyone is eager to cultivate relationships with other out-of-towners and North Bay students will be eager to show you around. The people here want you to succeed and they want you to enjoy yourself while doing it! Our main campus has 4,689 full-time students and is located in North Bay, Ontario, a city of 56,000 people. It’s considered one of the safest places to live. Although the name North Bay may give the impression that it’s distant, it is in fact, only a 3.5 hour drive from Toronto and 4 hours from Ottawa. What can I study? Nipissing University offers over 20 different majors in a variety of disciplines. You’ll benefit from the personal contact with your professors, the quality of teaching and the student services we have to support you. 95 years and is internationally renowned for the quality of its programs and its innovative laptop learning initiative.
