Collegians fought back during the afternoon and had
their chances to win but justice was probably done on

Ormond beat Ivanhoe by 17 points ina in a very
~~ . scoring game . but the score did not really reflect
Ormond's dominance of the game . The win leaves
Ormond poised just outside the four . Phil Mehrten at
full back for Ormond was clearly best on the ground .
His brother Andy was a good rover and ruck rover
Simon Eishold played well too . For Ivanhoe . captain
and centre half back Peter Gittos was their best
plaver .
Bulleenbe La Salle inflicted a 10 point defeat on
Templestowe . It was a desperate finish and De La
Sa ll e sealed the match with a last minute goal. Bulleen
,utrted well again, getting the first 5 goals before th e
an but after that De La Salle were much more
t,--2ressive at the ball . Shane Murphy kicked 3
aluable goals for De La and Deveson, Bourke an d
Cooke defended stoutly . Bulleen-Temp's bestline was
its half back line of Smy the, Van Den D ri est and
Palmer . Phil Kerin spent much of the game on the
intorchanee bench and Stephen Pace was kept
-- aliess . ~
No rth Old=Boy s beat the Old Xaverians witha with
a very impressive first half . but the Xavs . fought back
in the final two terms . Gus Carro ll rucked well and
kicked three goals and Paul Considine partnered him
well . Both centremen played well- Steve O'Ro urke
fo r No rth and Nick Bourke for the Xavs. and full
back Atkinson beat Marchbank . Steve Cu rtain kicked
only 2 goals but he was the only one of the 101eading
coalkickers to add to his tally .
Ih,
Since the Fosters brothers brewed the
first distinctive Australian lager in 1 888
the fame of Australia's favourite beer
has grown around Australia and around
the world.
Foster's was first exported to South
Africa during the Boer war . Today you
can get a Foster's from Baghdad to
Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore .
It's by far the biggest selling
Australian beer in Britain .
One of the top 10 selling imports in
the U .S .A.
Sold in every Australian state,
Foster's outsells every other Australian
brand of beer .
Old Scotch started better than the Blues and went
on tow in by 21 points . The Cardinals were allowed
too many loose players by the Blues and the result
was 5 goals to Scotch by quarter time whilst the Blues
were goalless . The Blues were never able to overcome
this bad start . Brian Hodge continued with his good
form on the wing, though for the Blues Richard
Polkinghorne and David Nugent were good players .
Scotch captain Fergus Kiel played another great game
at centre half back .
A few weeks ago I tipped five away sides . I think
the 5 home sides will win today . I wonder.
LAST WEEK IN OTHER SECTIONS
by Peter Frenc h
Parkside consolidated its position on top of B
Section with a thrilling I point win over main rivals
Caulfield Gramma rians . Parkside kicked 5 goals to
nil in the first term and only 4 more for the rest of the
game whilst the fields managed nine .
O .M .'s brought St . Kilda back to earth with a huge
win and Marcellin and Old Paradians had
encoiuraging wins over Old Brighton and AJAX.
Finally Kew beat the Blacks in a close game .
In C Section Bany We who according to Max Ly on
have the word on Therry inflicted the first defeat on
Bernie Dunn's side for the year and Old Halley bury
were more than satisfied with its victory over Monash
Blues . Hampton Rovers returned to the winning list
with a solid win against Thomastown and Old
Camberwell beat St. Kevins for whom someone must
surely have killed a Chinaman .
In the D Section match of the day Old Trinity
proved far too strong for main rivals MHSOB and
Old Mentonians moved closer to the four with a win
over State Bank . Surprise result of the day was Old
Ivanhoe's 10 point win over Balaclava .
In E Section the OGGS burst the Preston bubble
whilst Bulleen United the most rapidly improving
side in the Section had a significant win over
Elsternwick .
In the F Section mach of the day Clay ton was
found :vantin, at the hands of Doveton going down
bN 10 goals . 6ld Essendon failed a big test against
Commonwealth Bank and UHSOB were big winners
over LaTrobe .
My interviews today are with John Pollard (De La
Salle) . Gerard Sholly (Old Paradians), Bernie Dunn
tTherry CCOB) . Kevin Drinan (Balaclava), Richard
Morley (Bulleen United) and Steven Nicholson

A SECTIO N
NEW COACH AT MARCELLIN
After a successful amateur career. Brian Cooney
is coaching Marcellin OC's under 19 side . His
experience, ability and dedication has enabled him to
mould a fine side of attacking players . john Gartner,
one of the club's illustrious players, is acting as runner
this year . John has played at all levels of amateur
football and has represented the state on two
occasions. As the recipient of a number of awards
during his career, along with his knowledge of the
game and its tactics, John is able to ensure that the
coach's instructions are carried out . All the ancillary
tasks are carried out by the SEXTON clan, Rod, Paul
and Peter, who have been involved in various ways
since the earliest days of the club . Every success for
the rest of the season .
A TON AT ROVERLAND
Everyone at Roverland is delighted that Wylie
"Jigga" Austin is playing his 100th game with the clu b
against St . Kevins today . Wylie commenced playing
with the Rovers in 1978 with our U/19 side . In 1979
and 1982 Wylie won the Most Determined Award
which typifies his style of play, his fierce
determination on the field is a great inspiration to all .
earning him the position as captain of the club for the
last four years. Wylie's contribution off the field is
just as intense as his playing style, and over the years
many of his antics have gainedhim many votes in
Roverland . All at the Rovers congratulate you Wylie
and look forward to your next 11 games .
200 GAMES AT ELSTERNWICK
Congratulations to Mick Convery who today plays
his 200th game forElsternwick . Mick has played the
vast majority of his 200games as a Ruckman/forward
in the seniors . Always a handy player. Mick's marking
and ruck play (but not his goal kicking) continue to
improve with age . Mick won the best player trophy in
the Ist XVIII 1984 semi-final game . This year his
form has been outstanding as well as playing, Mick
has been a stalwart of the club administratton, he is a
former treasurer and current committeeman who
does a tremendous amount of fund raising work for
the club . Mick's great contribution to the club was
recognised in 1983 when he was made a Life Member .
Mick is always in evidence at club functions and
when suitably primed has been known to burst into
song . All Elsternwick players and supporters
congratulate Mick Convery on playing his 200th
game .
150 GAMES AT ST . KILDA
Yet another St . Kilda player reaches 150 games
when Paul Howard plays against Marcellin today .
Paul started with the club in 1976 and quickly
established himself as a solid defender with plenty of
pace and good skills . He has played most games at
full-back in the Reserves, being a 'member of the '83
Premiership side . A committeeman and good
clubman . Paul is a real contributor at St. Kilda and
we look forward to his 200th .

100 UP FOR 'NEWTS '
Old Hailey bury 's quick and skillful wingman,
Mark Newton, plays his 100th game for the club
today at Banyule . The lean number 34 first played
way back in 1976 . Michael Porter's first yearns coach .
Newts had led it large hand down, the "75ers" and
Porter obtained incredible committment from this
group which took the club to "B" grade . The role of
"Newta" was it central one, both on the field and
particularly socially. Newts acted as President when
the 75ers formed their own team in the club XVIII
competition (and finished second) in 1982 . The
following year he did much to guide this group back
to the mainstream club . His efforts in 1983 marked
him as a very worthy winner for the Barrie Berggy
Memorial Trophy for Outstanding and Meritorious
Service . Recently the Newtons have shown even
greater involvement with young sons attending the
games regularly now along with father-in-law Keith
and wife Cathy (what a dancer!) . Newts' involvement
in squash means that, even as a veteran, he is one of
the fittest men in the club . Let's hope he can add it
few inore games and goals to his current tallies yet (of
100 and 40 respectively) . Congratulations Newts from
all at the Bloods .

100 GAMES AT HEA T H ED T O N
,Tony `Spew' Perkins played his 100th game against
Peninsula last week . Tony started in our junior side
some years ago and except for some unfortunate
injuries would have completed this milestone earlier .
He has been a great asset to the club both on and off
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1985
the field . Presently he is serving on the committee
and are sure he will continue in this role for some
time. `Spew' approaches his football the sameway he
approaches his women . Toff, Relentless and
Penatrating are adjectives used to describe him . Over
the past seasons he has become a leader both on and
off the field and his desire for the game is an example
to players twice his size . Congratulations and well
done 'Spew' from everyone at Heatherton .
